Mainland China is the largest trading partner and the largest export market of Hong Kong, while the city is the third largest trading partner and the third largest export market of the Mainland. 96% of Hong Kong’s transit trade is Mainland related. Implements CEPA will further strengthen the economical integration of Hong Kong and the Mainland and economic and trade cooperation. It fully manifests the care of the Central government to Hong Kong special zone and the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ principle.

Assignment --Simulation ExercisesRole-play the following situations with your partners, acting as the Chinese speaker, English speaker and the interpreter respectively. One group will be invited to perform in class.

Situation A

Work in groups, log on internet http://www.tid.gov.hk/english/cepa/ to look for some material about CEPA. Make a speech on it, and find your partner to be your interpreter.

Situation BYou are Assistant Manager of a Company in Hong Kong. You come to Mainland to cooperate with a company in Shenzhen. The manager of the Shenzhen company is introducing the advantages of CEPA to you. You two are making a dialogue to each other. The third student tries to be their interpreter.

Points to Remember

• The completion of interpreting performance does not mean that the work of interpreting is finished.

• Experienced interpreters, after completing an interpreting task, always make a summary on their performance so as to find out their strong points and weak ones.

• Interpreting is a Preparing--Performing--Packaging process, which can be further divided into six modules, namely preparing, decoding, memorizing, encoding, coordinating and packaging.

• Each module involves certain interpreting techniques.
