INTERNATIONAL QUILT STUDY CENTER & MUSEUM | 2017-2018 ANNUAL REPORT 3

Dear Friends,

Since 2008 the International Quilt Study Center & Museum has gone from a storage room to a world-class facility with a global collection and audience. While each of our 10 years as a museum has been special, this milestone year has been especially remarkable.

“Uncovered: The Ken Burns Collection” enabled us to collaborate with NET’s “Nebraska Stories” to produce an episode about his collection and our museum. The resulting segment received more than 2 million views on the NET website—and millions more on social media—making it the most viewed segment in their history.

Partnerships with the American Folk Art Museum, Quiltmania’s “Pour l’Amour du Fil,” the Mary Ghormley Memorial Lecture Series and other entities gave us the platform to share our mission and vision with friends, new and old, around the world.

We had record-setting attendance. We launched a new interactive and informative website. We welcomed new team members. We increased our donor base. And we are only just beginning to scratch the surface of our dreams for the future.

It is truly an honor for our team to share a few notable highlights from this past year with you as we set our sights on what the days ahead of us will bring.

Leslie C. Levy, JDArdis and Robert JamesExecutive Director of Quilt House

The International Quilt Study Center & Museum’s mission is to build a global collection and audience that celebrate the cultural and artistic significance of quilts.

nsThe International Quilt Study Center & Museum’s global collection now stands at more than 5,500 quilts and related textiles. In 2017-2018 the International Quilt Study Center & Museum’s Acquisitions Committee set its sights on growing the museum’s international and studio art quilt collections.

Many of these quilts were acquired to strengthen scheduled exhibitions. The museum added two full-size and 20 miniature quilts by Japanese maker Eiko Okano. They appeared in Eiko Okano’s Delectable World in the Center Gallery from February 9 –June 28.

The museum acquired 17 pieces from Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana and Nigeria. These pieces will be featured in From Kente to Kuba: Stitched Textiles from West and Central Africa, which opens December 7.

The collection now includes 24 wall hanging-sized quilts from Russia. Made in the late 1990s, they depict traditional Russian folk tales and architecture. Our team looks forward to learning about these pieces—such as translating the labels on the back, which contain information about the makers and quilts themselves. These are tentatively scheduled for display in 2020.

IQSCM’s collection of European studio art quilts grew significantly. It includes works from Genevieve Attinger of France, Esther Bornemisza of Hungary, Mariel Clarmont of France, Maryline Colliold-Robert of Switzerland, Willy Doreleijers of the Netherlands, Katriina Flensburg of Sweden, Sara Impey of England, Isabelle Wiessler of Germany and Anne Woringer of France. American studio art quilt acquisitions includes work from Ann Carroll, Kathryn Clark, Jean Hewes and Elizabeth Ingraham.

In addition to quilts and textiles, the museum added to its archival collection with contributions from Mary Bywater Cross, Merikay Waldvogel and Quilt National.

The International Quilt Study Center & Museum’s 2017-2018 exhibitions schedule drew national and international attention from media and visitors alike. Pulling from its own extensive collection, the museum’s exhibitions were also supported by loaned objects and expertise from notable artists, makers, private collectors and scholars.

Major exhibitions opening during the fiscal year include:• Block by Block: American Quilts in the Industrial Age (August 4–

November 30)• Small Talk (September 2–February 4)• Voltage: Quilts by Erica Waaser (September 29–February 25)• Made by Hand (January 5–April 29)• Uncovered: The Ken Burns Collection (January 19–May 13)• Eiko Okano’s Delectable World (February 9–June 28)• Velda Newman: Panorama (April 2–June 10)• Singular Fascination (May 4–August 30)• War and Pieced: The Annette Gero Collection of Quilts from

Military Fabrics (May 25–September 16)• Color and Contour: Provençal Quilts and Domestic Objects

(June 15–October 28)

Uncovered: The Ken Burns Collection gave audiences a first-ever look at the documentary film-maker’s private collection. It garnered significant media attention and drew record-setting attendance.

IQSCM collaborated with world-renown scholar and collector Annette Gero and the American Folk Art Museum in New York City to produce War and Pieced. Featuring Gero’s collection, in addition to a handful of pieces from the museum’s own collection of soldier’s quilts, the exhibition debuted at AFAM in the fall before appearing at the IQSCM during the summer.

Our quilts will reach more international audiences next year, with shows scheduled in Japan and England.

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of Quilt House gave the museum’s team an opportunity to explore new ways of engaging audiences, including live performances, workshops, lectures, parties and more.

With thousands of visitors from around the world traveling to Nebraska to view the total solar eclipse on August 21, the IQSCM drew some of these visitors by holding our first pop-up exhibit in the Dillow Conservation Work Room. A Rare Occurrence showcased nine quilts, including traditional American, international and studio art quilts. To follow-up this successful display, additional pop-ups included The Haunting of Quilt House in October, Hawaiian Holiday in December and C’est Magnifique in February.

The 2018 Tuesday Talk series has been a crowd favorite with attendance increasing by 60 percent. “Stitched in Nebraska” highlighted several contemporary local artists and makers, who brought samples of their work along with stories to share.

IQSCM commemorated its 10th anniversary by inviting families in our neighborhood—and from throughout Lincoln— for a Birthday Block Party on May 4. With an arts and crafts table, bean bag toss, face painting, Dairy Store ice cream, a live performance from “The String Beans” and more, the event drew 545 attendees, many who came for the first time.

The museum continued to build relationships with students and educators at the University of Nebraska, Southeast Community College, Nebraska Wesleyan, Lincoln Public Schools and beyond. One particular highlight was working with students from LPS’s Arts and Humanities Focus Program. After touring the museum, students created paper and fabric quilt blocks in response to what they saw. Their work later appeared in the museum’s Beavers Terrace Gallery in a display from August 1–November 14.

“Singular Fascination” appeared May 4–Aug. 30 in the Peg Coryell

Gallery. It was guest-curated by Jennifer Keltner, editor of “American Quilt Treasures.”
