Creating, Collaborating and Computing in Math

Enhancing the teaching and learning of mathematics using technology

Riverside School Board and McGill University 2013-2016

Page 2: CCC-M Introduction (2013-2016)

Why this project? Student success in mathematics Focus on the transition from elementary to

secondary Digital literacy Professional learning network Initial funding for 3 years (Sept 2013 - Aug

2016)

Overview (1)

Page 3: CCC-M Introduction (2013-2016)

Goals Teachers and consultants engage in

on-going, sustained professional learning

For the benefit of student learning Use of data to monitor and orient

practice, inquiry, and learning

Overview (2)

Page 4: CCC-M Introduction (2013-2016)

What knowledge do “we” (teachers, school board pedagogical consultants, and educational researchers) need in order to improve students’ understanding, and integrate digital tools meaningfully into this practice shift?

How can we engage in the most promising professional development experiences to achieve the above practice shift in a sustainable way?

How can we use student-learning data to monitor progress and adapt practice toward the goal of developing digital literacy and disciplinary understanding?

Research Questions

Key Activities for Year 3 (2015-2016)

Objectives Strategies 1. Cultivate a community of practice in mathematics teaching and digital tools

Ongoing, active online interaction(e.g., Edmodo & Vialogues)

2. Develop solutions and measure and evaluate the results Video-

based Reflective Practice

Student learning data (e.g., Formative assessments)

3. Develop practice of using digital tools for teaching and learning math

ICT hands-on sessions at F2F meetings (e.g., Gizmodo, Flipping, and so on)

4. Promote reflective practice and inquiry

Regular, ongoing reflection
