WELCOME! Welcome to Carnival weekend - the second event from Horsecross Arts’ Inspiring Communities programme.

To celebrate the Royal Burgh of Perth’s 800th year, Horsecross Arts is bringing togetherinternational artists and people from across Perth & Kinross in a jubilee of inspiration and creativity. 2010 is filled with art workshops, music sessions, dance lessons and more. From Indian Dance to Capoeira, the people of Perthshire have got creative and the result is Home and Away - three community festivals where they will share the stage with internationally renowned figures of live music and art.

Carnival is the second of these festivals, and the largest. We have tried to keep as much as possible free, fun and open to all, and we have been delighted with the response. Since May 2010 we have been running Carnival workshops in every area of Perth and Kinross from Art in Aberfeldy to Afrobeat in North Perth. We’ve involved nearly 5000 people and have worked with almost every primary and secondary school in the region.

This Carnival weekend is a celebration of three birthdays - not only Perth’s 800th, but Perth Theatre Company’s 75th and the Concert Hall’s 5th Birthday, so thank you for coming along to help us celebrate! With Brazilian samba bands, African afrobeat groups and traditional Scottish pipers, we hope we have brought something to the party for everyone. Whether you are on stage or on the street, you are taking part, so please give us your best moves and grooves - enjoy the party!

Watch out for Lightnight in November - our final Home and Away event - when we’ll be working with Chinese artists and musicians to create a special finale to our year.

hip hop residency Hip Hop Shakespeare is a music theatre production company led by MOBO award winning artist Kingslee ‘Akala’ Daley. The company spent a week in North Inch Community Campus working alongside 40 young people from all over Perth and Kinross. They turned some of Shakespeare’s best known sonnets and monologues into hip hop and spoken word which they perform at the Carnival today.

costume residency Our resident artists Ashley and Caroline assisted community and school participants to design and make all the costumes in the parade today. Some of the groups they’ve worked with include Fairfield ADHD Support Group, Horsecross Players Drama Group, Kinnoull Adult Resource Centre and young people from Autism Initiative Scotland.

afrobeat residency Dele Sosimi, legendary Afrobeat musician, came to Perth with his musicians Justin, Tom and Kunle for six rehearsals between August and September. He visited six primary schools to lead choir and whole school singing workshops, and worked with the Vale of Atholl Youth Pipe Band Drummers and many community brass, woodwind and percussion players to create a new Afrobeat Band for the Carnival. Dele also joined the newly formed Perth African Community Group to teach them traditional Nigerian chants to sing in the parade.

horsecross and Drake Music scotland Participants from Perth’s Adult Resource Centres have been working throughout this year alongside a composer, director and filmmakers to create the unique sounds, sights and atmosphere of The Flamingo Club. This work has been enhanced by their collaboration with percussionist Naná Vasconcelos who also takes to the stage today.

The Flamingo Club is a partnership project between Horsecross Arts, Drake Music Scotland and Perth & Kinross Council. Funded by Awards For All, Horsecross Arts and The Guildry Incorporation of Perth.

schools capoeira residency Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian artform that combines martial arts, music and dance. Our Capoeira experts, Jedde, Mica, Stuart, Stephen and Thaissa, led 115 workshops in 43 primary schools throughout Perthshire. All the young people who took part in the sessions have been invited to come to Carnival for our ‘Join-In Capoeira’ event in front of the main stage.

dance residency “I enjoyed this week because I haven’t done dance in a while and it taught me that anything can be a dance all you have to do is flow and move altogether” workshop participant

David Hughes and Matt Foster, of the David Hughes Dance Company, led a week-long dance residency in August for 13 young people from various areas of Perthshire. The residency looked at what dance skills the young people already had and used these as a starting point, as well as introducing ballet, contemporary and street styles.

“unfortunately I have never took the time to get involved in dance activities or clubs until I joined this workshop... I have really took a great interest to it to my surprise... It’s been a great experience” workshop participant

schools sculpture residency June McEwan led 76 sculpture workshops in 32 different nursery, primary and secondary schools in Perthshire over three weeks. She also ran community workshops in all areas of Perthshire creating the sculptures shown in the parade today including hobby horses and large wicker tigers and elephants. Some of the groups June has worked with include families at Double Dykes Travellers Camp, Crieff Knockdown Group and Senior Citizens from Fairfield.

graffiti resideNcy Chris Young, assisted by Brian MacFeely, led Graffiti workshops with Muirton Youth Crew, Fairfield Youth Crew, Young Tulloch Team, Reach Out Muirton Young Achievers and Rocksteady (Aberfeldy) to design banners for the beginning of the different sections of the parade and also to create the large Carnival boards at the Concert Hall.

Tha Ceòl ABC Alba stèidhichteÀs dèidh cha mhòr dà bhliadhna de shaothair da ullachadh, cluinnidh sibh cuirm-chiùil a-nochd a dh’aoineas ruitheaman à Braisil le binneas na Gàidhlig. ‘S e ar n-amas gum bi seo na chuirm dur cluais is dur sùil ‘s sinne gur toirt air cuairt bho ghairbhead dhachaigh Naná, am baile-mòr Recife air oirthir an ear-thuath Bhraisil, gu beanntanan Siorrachd Pheairt. ‘S ann le toileachas mòr a chuir sinn air an aon àrd-ùrlar Foireann-ciùil Òigridh Pheairt agus clann na Sgoil Sgoinneal Disathairne YMI son a bhith a’ cluich còmhla ri Naná san t-sealladh iongantach seo.

Tha Ceòl ABC Alba stèidhichte air pròiseact-ciùil aig neach-faramachd is maighstir-ciùil Braisileach Naná Vasconcelos. Chaidh a’ pròiseact a thòiseachadh ann am Braisil mar phàirt den iomairt, Gnìomh do Chloinn Braisilich. ‘S ann às na sgìrean as bochda an ceann an ear-thuath Bhraisil a bha a’ chlann fhèin agus tha i stèidhichte air feallsanachd fèin-ùghdarras agus giùlan gasta dhan a chèile. On uair sin, tha Naná air a’ phròiseact-ciùil seo a thoirt air feadh an t-saoghail.

Dh’iarr Ronnie Goodman, a tha na òraidiche-ciùil aig Colaiste Pheairt, air Horsecross beachdachadh air atharrachadh Albannach a chruthachadh dhith a bhiodh air a bonntachadh sa phròiseict Bhrasilich. Thug Ronnie agus Nanà cuireadh don chruthaiche-ciùil ainmeil, Edaidh MacGuaire, agus don t-seinneadair ionadail, Aileen NicGilleBhuidhe, a bhith gan cuideachadh leatha. Chaidh feadhainn de na h-òrain am fàgail ann am Portagais, ach bha atharraidhean ùra gan cur riutha le puirt dhùthchasail na Gàidhlig.

ABC Musical Alba Horsecross Arts is proud to bring you ABC Musical Alba. What you hear tonight is the result of nearly two years work to produce an exciting blend of Brazilian beats and Gaelic tones. We aim to stimulate your ears and also your eyes as you are transported between the rough terrain of Naná’s home city of Recife on Brazil’s north east coast and the mountains of Highland Perthshire. We are proud to pair Perth’s very own Youth Orchestra with youngsters from YMI Saturday Cool Schools to perform alongside Naná for this wonderful spectacle.

ABC Musical Alba is based on a musical project by Brazilian percussionist and musical maestro Naná Vasconcelos. The project started in Brazil as part of an Action for Brazilian Children initiative. It involved children who were drawn from many poverty stricken communities in North East Brazil and is based on values of empowerment and citizenship. Naná has since taken this musical project all over the world.

Using the Brazilian project as a template, Ronnie Goodman, music lecturer at Perth College, got together with Horsecross Arts to create a Scottish version of this work. Renowned Scottish composer Eddie McGuire and local Gaelic songstress Aileen Ogilvie assisted in arranging a new musical, keeping some songs in their traditional Portuguese but also adding new arrangements of traditional Gaelic tunes.

Alba C.MacDonald/R.MacDonald

This flight is sailing the cloudsAnd the blue heavensThe homeland appears like a developing photographThrough the light, as I return to land

I see Scotland of high mountainsAnd empty acresFlying low across the moorland lochsThe forests and the glens

But it is a wounding and a hollow sightHere as we reach the end of the centuryThe beautiful soil of the peopleStill in the hands of the few

I see the wheels of industry at a standstillAnd the northern lands laid bareAnd the big empty house in EdinburghWithout authority or voice

You that have laid field upon fieldHouse upon houseTill there be nowhere for you to be placed aloneIn the midst of all the earth

But it is good for me to be here nowAs I welcome the warmthIn this land that is as vibrant for me todayAs when I was a child.

NaNá VascoNcelosNaná was born in Recife, northeast Brazil, and even after twenty years of performing throughout the world his roots are apparent in everything he plays. A master of all Brazilian percussion instruments he specialises in the berimbau. Acknowledged as its foremost player he takes the instrument far beyond its traditional uses.

After playing in every imaginable context, from symphonic orchestras to street bands in his hometown, Naná moved toRio de Janeiro and began to play with one of Brazil’s greatest singers, Milton Nascimento. Since 1975 he has worked with artists from B.B. King to Talking Heads, Don Cherry to Trilok Gurtu. His contributions to each project are special and go beyond the usual role allotted a percussionist.

A further dimension to his work lies in his continuing commitment to his work with children and people with learning difficulties, through workshop residencies in the UK and Italy. Each year Naná leads the opening of the Recife Carnival (the largest street carnival in Brazil) leading a procession of 500 Maracatu drummers from the densely populated neighbourhoods of Recife. The drummers (Batuqeiros) are conducted by Naná as a grand ensemble and guest star singers such as Marisa Monte and Elza Soares have featured on stage supported and propelled by this fantastic wave of rhythm.

Eddie McGuireBorn in Glasgow, Eddie studied composition with James Iliff at the Royal Academy of Music, London (1966-70) and then with Swedish composer Ingvar Lidholm in Stockholm. His works have been regularly broadcast and commissions have come from the Glasgow University McEwen Bequest, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, St Magnus and Edinburgh International Festivals.

He’s produced several large-scale works to critical acclaim: the ballet score Peter Pan, A Glasgow Symphony, a chamber opera The Loving of Etain, and concerti for guitar, trombone, viola, violin and double bass.

Eddie writes for and plays flute with Scottish folk group The Whistlebinkies, and plays with the Chinese group Harmony Ensemble. He was the recipient of a British Composers Award in 2003 and a Creative Scotland Award in 2004.

Allan YoungAllan attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama where he studied violin with Jurgen Hess and Sam Bor. After graduating he played with many orchestras including the Scottish Opera Orchestra. From 1984-1996 he was a string instructor for Perth and Kinross before being appointed Music Co-ordinator for Perth and Kinross Education and Children’s Services leading a team of instructors who deliver instrumental tuition throughout the area.

In 2000 Allan became conductor of Perth Youth Orchestra (PYO) and in 2005 he was proud to conduct PYO before Her Majesty The Queen in the new Perth Concert Hall.

As an orchestral musician Allan has performed with many local ensembles; Chansons, Perth Amateur Operatic Society, Perth Cathedral Operatic Society, John Scrimger’s Potted Palm Group and Perth Choral Society.

Ronnie Goodman Ronnie lectures in Music and Creative Industries at Perth College UHI. He began researching Brazil in 1993 with trips to Olodum, a community based Afro-Brazilian organisation that has produced a world-class performance group of drummers and singers.

Six further research visits to Brazil followed, the most recent a six month sabbatical in 2008 based in Recife, north east Brazil. While here, studying Maracatu, he approached Naná Vasconcelos and the ABC Musical Alba project began.

Ronnie has worked as a freelance session musician with producers such as Gary Katz (Steely Dan) and Tom Dowd (Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin). He has toured extensively with artists such as Love and Money, Hue and Cry and Capercaillie and has been a freelance composer with contemporary music, dance and theatre projects.

Aileen OgilvieSpecialising in folk and Gaelic song, Aileen has an impeccable reputation as a singer and is regularly in demand for performance and song-writing collaborations.

Inspired by the traditional music, song and Gaelic language of her Highland upbringing she discovered her singing voice by entering the Inverness Mod. She competed in various Mods and Music Festivals before studying for a BA in Popular Music Performance at Perth College UHI.

At college Aileen collaborated with samba band Rhythm Wave. Since 2007 they’ve been mixing traditional Gaelic songs with Brazilian rhythms, performing at various events and venues including Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and three Glastonbury Festivals.

Aileen tutors across the country including the Traditional Music in Schools project run by Feis Rois and Perth & Kinross Council’s Saturday Cool School.
