Why walk the Camino? This incredible experience is rewarding, fun and great exercise along the most beautiful scenic coasts of Portugal and northern Spain! It is a combination of stone and dirt paths, boardwalks and small country roads. An amazing journey taking in beaches, rolling hills and gentle, flat paths while walking distances of approximately 20 km per day.

Galicia and SantiagoThe section of the Camino which you will be walking is located in the region of Galicia in the northwest of Spain. The region is known as the “Ireland of Spain”, it has a temperate climate and the heat is not as overwhelming as it can be in the rest of Spain.

The walk starts in Oia and continues to Santiago de Compostela. You will be walking along the most amazing sandy beaches of south Galicia. Go for a dip in clear waters of the Vigo estuary. Discover the most historic and cultural areas of Spain in the medieval towns of Pontevedra and Baiona.

We will finish the walk in the historic city of Santiago de Compostela, commonly known as Santiago. The city has its origin in the shrine of Saint James the Great, which is now the city’s cathedral. It is a destination of the ‘Way of St. James’, a leading Catholic pilgrimage route originated in the 9th century. In 1985 the city’s Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 1: Oia to Baiona (5h, 20km) SUNDAY 24TH SEPTEmBEr

After an early arrival (10am), we will make our way towards Oia to start the walk into lovely Baiona. You will choose to walk between 5-10-15 or 20 km.

Day 2: Baiona to Vigo (7h, 28km) mONDAY 25TH SEPTEmBEr

The way out of the gorgeous town of Baiona will keep you along sandy beach for most of the day. You will have regular opportunities to stop in local cafes along the beach. You will then enter a typical Galician entrance of Vigo and the maze of streets before entering Vigo via its wide sandy beach where we will set for the night. There will be plenty time to dip tired legs and bodies in the refreshing sea.

Day 3: Vigo to Pontevdra (5h, 18Km) TUESDAY 26TH SEPTEmBEr

After a short transfer to bypass some of the unpleasant exit of Vigo, you will walk from redondela on the classic Portuguese Way to Pontevedra. reaching the historic site of Ponte Sampaio, the Camino crosses the Verdugo river. During the War of Independence, Napoleon’s army suffered one of its greatest defeats in Galicia at this bridge. Heading up a cobbled footpath we come to the 13th century church of Santa maria. Views of the Bay of Vigo are stunning

Day 4 – Pontevedra to Caldas de Rei (5h 15m, 18km) WEDNESDAY 27TH SEPTEmBEr

Passing chestnut groves, the Camino leaves Pontevedra and runs parallel to the railway for a while. After passing through the hamlet of Ponte Cabras, we encounter the rectory of Santa maria de Alba, tucked away among pine and eucalyptus trees. Emerging from the dense woods of Lombo da maceira, you’ll see a statue of Saint James the pilgrim, his cane pointing the way to proceed. The lovely village of Tibo brings us to Caldas do rei.

Day 5 - Caldas to Padron (5h 20m, 21km) THUrSDAY 28TH SEPTEmBEr

Exiting the town, we take a bridge over the river Umia that leads us to a fountain of hot spring water that had lent the town its name since roman times. Entering the woods once more, the Camino makes its way gently uphill to the

hamlet of Santa marina. Going downhill, we then cross the river Fontenlo. Finally, following a Camino lined with pine trees, we catch up again with the river as we arrive in Padron. Padron is famous for being the first land sighted by the ship bearing the body of Saint James.

Day 6 – Padron to Santiago de Compostela (6h, 24km). End of the Camino FrIDAY 29TH SEPTEmBEr

The Camino passes through many small villages and hamlets before arriving at the Baroque sanctuary of A Esclavitude. On a hilltop to the left stands the mysterious, abandoned ruins of the hillfort Castro Lupario, and couple of kilometres later, we come to the oldest wayside crosses in Galicia. As we near Agro dos monteiros, it is now possible to see the towers of the cathedral. Finally the Camino passes by the ruins of a castle known as A rocha Vella, before entering the city of the Apostle.

Days 7 and 8 – Santiago SATUrDAY 30TH SEPTEmBEr - SUNDAY 1ST OCTOBEr

Free day in Santiago on day 7 for last minute souvenirs shopping, then early transfer to Vigo Airport on Day 8.

Every Step CountsBy stepping out on the Camino you are embarking on a personal challenge but also supporting people nationwide who are facing death or bereavement. Our vision is for no one to face these challenging times without the care and support they need.

Nurses for Night CareNurses work throughout the night enabling people to spend their final days at home in their own bed with loved ones by their side. 1,734 nights of care was provided by our nurses to 550 people nationwide last year.

Transforming Hospital SpacesForty eight hospitals are already involved in our Design & Dignity programme which transforms hospital spaces making them a more comfortable dignified place in which to die and grieve.

“This special room brought us back together.”

Caring for Children“From the moment we met our Children’s Outreach Nurse, she was so helpful. She built me up and gave me the confidence to be able to care for my son when I felt ready to fold.”

Our Hospice Care for Children Campaign helps parents treasure precious time with their little ones.

We’ve supported Ireland’s only Paediatric Consultant with a special interest in Palliative Care and an excellent team of outreach nurses.

Our Palliative Care for All programme ensures the palliative care needs of people living with life-limiting conditions like dementia, heart failure and respiratory diseases are met. This makes palliative care available to all who need it.

Over 40 acute hospitals embraced the hospice ethos through our Hospice Friendly Hospitals programme which works closely with staff to ensure that end-of-life, palliative and bereavement care is central to their work.

Our website www.bereaved.ie provides advice and support and our Bereavement Education Centre trains 3,000 people annually.EVERY mOmENT
