Dear Members of the St. Patrick’s College Community The routine of the school term is now well established and I wish to commend the students on the way they have commenced the term. I thank parents for your support on the important issues of uniform, hair, homework and school travel. It is vital that a clear and consistent message regarding these issues is reinforced both at home and at school. Last Monday the 2014 Orientation evening was held. In 2014 there will be 140 new boys commencing in Year 5, 20 in Year 7, 52 in Year 8 and a small number across the other year levels. The majority of these students were in attendance on Monday evening and it was a pleasure to welcome them and their families to St. Patrick’s College. The enthusiasm, genuine interest and some nervousness reassured me that the future of the College is secure. My thanks go to the many staff, parents and Year 11 students who attended the evening. Your presence reaffirmed the positive and welcoming nature of the St. Patrick’s College community. On Wednesday evening the Parents and Friends AGM was conducted and I am pleased to announce the Committee for 2014. They are: President Andrea Sked Vice President Louise Stringer Treasurer Lesley Palmer Secretary Maxine Nott I thank both the incoming committee for accepting these roles and the 2013 committee for their valuable contributions to the College throughout the year. The student leadership selection process has commenced and it is my pleasure to announce the College Captain and Vice Captains for 2014. College Captain Joseph Champness College Vice Captains Samuel Huth and Thomas McNamara

These are outstanding young men who will lead the College very well in 2014. The election of House Leaders will take place next week. Tomorrow night the first stage of the AIC Track and Field Championships will occur. The St. Patrick’s College athletes have been working hard and will represent their College well. The St. Patrick’s College Track and Field Captains are Ryan Smith & Jacob Johannessen. I congratulate these young men and I am confident that they will lead the team very well. Next Tuesday is the main part of the AIC Athletics Carnival with all students from Years 9 to 12 attending. I again remind parents about Showcase which is now scheduled for Thursday, 24 October (a change from the date in the College calendar). Details of the night can be found in this edition of The Calling. I encourage families to attend this special night and enjoy the talent and spirit that is central to the occasion. My advice is to BE EARLY to secure your seat. A gold coin donation is the price of admission. Finally this week I thought I would share information regarding some special achievements by past students of St. Patrick’s College. Now that the winter football codes have finished their seasons it is worth noting that St. Patrick’s College was well represented in the final series for Super XV Rugby, AFL and NRL. Jesse Mogg (Year 12 2006) played for the Brumbies in the Super XV Final. Brendan Whitecross (Year 12 2007) played for Hawthorn in the final series and but for an injury in the preliminary final would have played in the Grand Final. Dylan Napa (Year 12 2009) played for the Roosters in the final series and was part of the extended players group for the Grand Final. I suspect few other schools in Brisbane had past students in the final series across these three different codes. Well done, Jesse, Brendan and Dylan! It is also worth noting that Jayson Bukuya (Cronulla) and Michael Crocker (South Sydney), past St Patrick’s College students, were part of the NRL final series . For the past months Woolworths has been giving their customers a pack of four animal cards for every $20 spent in store. St Patrick’s College would like to collect any spare/duplicate Wool-worths Aussie Animals collectable trading cards and albums to send to a school in the Tiwi Islands. So if you have filled your album or have duplicate cards they would love you to generously give cards (and al-bums) to the curriculum office. The cards will be collected, packaged and sent to a school on the Tiwi Islands. Please hand your cards into the Curriculum Office by Tuesday 22 October

The AIC Athletics Carnival is on at QSAC on Tuesday 22 October. It is the last major AIC sporting event for the year and we wish to have a presence and to support our athletes. All Year 9 to 12 students will travel to QSAC as supporters for the day. Can I ask that families do not take this opportunity for their students to have the day off school but to make the effort to be a part of the community and to be a part of the spirit of the day. All Year 5 to 8 students will have normal school lessons on Tuesday. Year 9 to 12 students are to be at school at normal time in their full ‘grey’ uniform. They should also have lunch and drinks for the day to prevent wasting time and money queuing for food at QSAC. Students will be transported to and from QSAC by bus and will be dismissed back at school at the normal time. Celebration of Excellence is on Friday 1 November. All families are invited to join the community in celebrating the achievements of 2013. It is not meant to be just for prize winners but for the whole community. It is the last significant event before our Year 12 students graduate and we would like to see every Year 12 student attend. A list of all prize winners will be posted on my office door next week. The Cultural Awards Assembly has been transferred from Thursday 24 October to Thursday 31 October. Laptop Bags— This year we introduced a new laptop bag which is more robust and provides maximum protection to the laptops. We have noticed a dramatic decrease in damage to student laptops. In 2014, the new laptop bags will be compulsory for Years 7,8, 10 and 1. The bags will be optional for Years 9 and 12 but I strongly recommend the bags for these students. The cost of the bag and embroidery is $75 . The laptop bags will need to be pre-ordered for Years 7 and 10 so they will be ready for collection with laptop. No laptop will be issued without the compulsory laptop bag. Students who already have a laptop bag and wish to have it embroidered with their name may arrange that through the Clothing Store for a cost of $5.

MOOT Last weekend the inaugural St Patricks College Senior Mooting Team competed in the QUT Mooting society Schools competition. What is mooting I hear you say? Well it is the presentation of legal argument made before a judge, it consists of two parts, a written submission followed by an oral submission. Our students, led by Senior Counsel William Nolan, supported by Adam Denaro and Jordan Naylor as Junior Counsel spent countless hours preparing both the Appellant and Respondent briefs for the competition, throughout this preparation the boys were assisted by old boys Ryan Nolan and Jack Nolan who were assigned as our men-tors by QUT. The boys were tasked with arguing a previous Judge’s ruling on a variety of civil law technicalities, most notably the classification of Snoopy the Sloth! After two moots against both Stuartholme Col-lege and Ferny Grove State High School, our young men sweated on the results of the judges to determine if we advanced to the next round, unfortunately even though we posted an incredi-bly respectable score of 80 out of 100 the boys were unlucky to not advance. A big congratulations to the young men and we look forward to a better performance next year.

This week we observe Anti-Poverty week. Poverty and severe hardship affect more than a million Australians. Around the world, more than a billion people are desperately poor. The main aims of Anti-Poverty Week are to: Strengthen public understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty and hardship around the world and in Australia; Encourage research, discussion and action to address these problems, including action by individuals, communities, organisations and governments. In the year 2000, 189 leaders from around the world met at a summit in New York. The UN Secretary at the time called for a joint effort from nations around the world to help fix some major problems in our world. At the time 1.2 Billion people were lived with less than $1 a day. 800 Million people were malnourished. 115 Million children were not enrolled in schools. Every year 10 million children died of preventable

diseases. 22 Million people died from HIV with 13 Million

children losing parents to this disease. 1 Billion people in developing nations did not have

access to drinkable water. 2.4 Billion people did not have access to clean

drinking water. As a result of this meeting a deal was made a deadline for 2015 was set for Millenium Development Goals Eradicate extreme Poverty and Hunger Achieve universal primary education Promote gender equality and empower women Reduce child mortality Improve Maternal Health Combat HIV, Malaria and other diseases Ensure environmental sustainability Develop a global partnership for development

Since then Extreme poverty rates have fallen More than 43 million children in Sub Saharan Africa

are in Primary Education The world has closed the gender gap in primary

education Child mortality has fallen by 35% in the last decade

due to increased vaccinations Maternal mortality has dropped over 34% Deaths due to Malaria have been cut by 30% and

treatment for HIV has dramatically increased. Since 1990 2 billion people have gained access to

drinking water But we can’t stop here. We need to continue to strive for change and work to eradicate conditions that force people to live on the margins in our time.

We need to continue to challenge our leaders to continue to strive for change as we head to 2015.

The Movement to End Poverty is a joint action of the Make Poverty History and Micah coalitions for all Australians who believe we can end extreme poverty.

What we are calling for:

“Since 1990, aid has helped to reduce extreme poverty,

including almost halving the number of children around the

world who die before their fifth birthday – 14,000 fewer children

dying every single day.

Let’s help make poverty history by giving our fair share of aid –

just 70 cents in every $100 of Australia’s national income by

2020.

As a step towards contributing our fair share, the Government

must keep its promise to increase aid to 50 cents in every $100

dollars of national income by 2016 and the Opposition must

match this commitment.”

Three Year 10 SOSE Geography classes went on a field trip to the Gold Coast Seaway last Friday. To manage the coast in a sustainable manner we need to under-stand the effect of physical processes on the coastal environ-ment. Coastal landforms are produced by the processes of ero-sion, transportation and deposition, mainly through the action of wave’s tides and currents. The future of our coasts depends on informed and aware citizens making decisions based on information available from sources such as governments and scientists. The challenge for people is to manage this Coastal area for generations to come. Students are researching..

The success of our student laptop program continues to devel-op. Students from Years 7-11 are utilising the devices each day. As we move closer to the end of the year I would like to take the opportunity to give a few reminders regarding the computers. Students are required to carry the laptop in the College laptop bag. My suggestion, regardless of year level, is to explore the option of utilizing the reinforced laptop bag, available for pur-chase from the Uniform Shop. Next year will see students in Years 7, 8, 10 and 11 using these bags as a compulsory require-ment, but they are a worthwhile investment for all students. During practical classes such as Dtech, Art, Drama or Physical Education, it is often the case that the laptops are not required. This has raised an issue regarding the storage of the machines. When not being used, laptops are best stored in student lockers. Leaving computers lying around unattended, as is often the case with these practical subjects can lead to problems. The devices may be damaged or lost if left unattended. Two areas of concern are the Callan Centre steps during PE lessons, which are a busy thoroughfare and the area outside the Saward Building during

Dtech lessons. This is a very cramped space, which in many in-stances is away from public view. Unfortunately there have been recent incidents of damage or loss for these areas. This raises a further difficulty as the students are ultimately responsible for the safe care of the computer. It is acceptable for boys to divert to lockers on the way to “prac” classes for safe storage of the laptop. I would prefer that all stu-dents in the 1 to 1 program adopt this practice. We are already in Week 2 of a busy final term. Many task sheets are now available to students. The best advice is to commence preparation now, where possible, for all assessment tasks. Keep working hard boys, It’s been a good year.

ORIENTATION EVENING The Callan Centre was full on Monday night with families here for the 2014 Orientation Evening. We welcomed 250 new students and families into the St. Patrick’s community. I would like to thank all the current parents who volunteered to help out on the night. The large number of parents helping at the door, at registration, cooking and serving created a wonderful introduction to St Patrick’s for our new families. I would like to thank the following parents who assisted: Lesley Palmer, Judy Jones, Brendan Ryan, Russell Oakes, Julie Langenberg, Terri Flynn, Jody Allison, Susie Laurence, Maisey Catling Dorothy Stone, Andrea Sked, Mary Brodie and Dan Greentree. I was very pleased to see over 170 of our current Year 11 students attend the night and begin their leadership role. Well done, gentlemen. A special thank you goes to the House Deans, Mrs Fowlie, Ms Emanuelli and Mrs Thompson for their tireless effort in making the evening run smoothly and with a very welcoming atmosphere LEADERSHIP 2014 As Dr Carroll has indicated we have been in the process of selecting our student leaders for 2014. Congratulations to Joseph, Samuel and Thomas on their selection as College Leaders. I have been very impressed with the manner in which the Year 11 students have entered into the leadership process. The strong alignment between staff and student voting indicates the students are focused on the correct attributes required in the process. The process for the selection of House Leaders began today and we will announce the leaders next week. All Year 11 students will attend a compulsory Leadership Retreat from Monday, 18 November to Wednesday, 20 November. GREEN AND GOLD DAY THURSDAY 24 OCTOBER Green and Gold Days are an opportunity for students not to wear their school uniform to school. It is an opportunity for Students to show their pride by wearing the school colours

of green and gold, and is not a free dress day. Students may wear- Clothing that is predominately green and /or gold Plain blue denim shorts or jeans No black denim St Patrick’s jerseys/ Team T-Shirts Sandshoes Any clothing with the St Patrick’s logo Students must not wear Clothing that is not predominately green and /or

Students who have workshop classes on that day must bring their black leather school shoes for these classes. We also ask all students to bring a gold coin donation to support “Men’s Health Awareness” SHOWCASE Our Inter-House competition culminates next Thursday evening with Showcase. It should be a great spectacle with over 1200 students on stage during the night. Please ensure your son knows when and where he is to meet his House Dean and what time his House is performing. We have asked the students to ensure they do not move around the school on the evening but are always with their parents, their House or performing on stage. HELP NEEDED The Year 12 Graduation Mass and Dinner will be held on Thursday, 14 November. We are asking present Year 11 parents and students to assist on the evening with the serving of food and drinks. Next year you will be the special guests and be waited upon. This week we acknowledged and presented our AIC Track & Field Team at a Spirit Assembly. The first round of the championship events will be conducted this Friday evening at QSAC, Nathan. The popular Junior Rugby program, Rookies2Reds, is coming to St Patrick’s College for a five week block during Term 4. Any

Year 5, 6 or 7 student will get the chance to emulate their St.George Queensland Reds heroes while developing their Rugby

skills. Rookies2Reds is Queensland Rugby Union’s inclusive, introductory Rugby program and provides Queensland kids with

a pathway to progress from being a rookie to a Red.

Through Rookies2Reds, our primary school students will be taught the basics of Rugby by Queensland’s Rugby Union Devel-

opment Officers and also learn about the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle which is promoted throughout the ses-

sions along with Rugby’s key values of teamwork, fairness and respect.

As well as professional coaching, participants also receive a special Rookies2Reds pack which includes a variety of gear in-

cluding a backpack, rugby ball, ball pump, lanyard, member benefits of 10% off Reds merchandise and Reds tickets as well as

either a slap band watch or cap.
