The virus wascreated by a gang of cyber criminals to redirect Internet traffic by hijackingthe domain name systems of web browsers.The ring behind the DNSchanger virus, discovered in 2007, was shut down last year by the USFederal Bureau of Investigations (FBI): Estonian police and other lawenforcement agencies. Because the virus controlled so much internet traffic,authorities obtained a court order to allow the FBI to operate replacementservers which allow traffic to flow normally , even from infected computers.

    On 11 July the paris based militant group organisation of the PeoplesMujahedin of Iran (MEK) has discovered credible evidence of a secret newnuclear site, gathered over a year by 50 sources in various parts of theregime.The codename of the project is Maadan-e Sharq (literally the mineof the east) or Project Kossar.This site is hidden in a series of tunnelsunder a mountain near the town of Damavand.The Paris-based militantgroup MEK alleges that the site has existed since 2006, with the first seriesof subterranean tunnels and four external depots recently completed.

    US Drone Successfully Lands On Aircraft Carrier

    U.S. Navy officials have successfully landed a remotely controlled drone onan aircraft carrier, long considered the most challenging feat in navalaviation. The U.S. Navy released video showing an unmanned NorthropGrumman X-47B aircraft nicknamed Salty Dog 502 landing on 10 July 2013on the deck of the USS George H.W. Bush sailing in the Atlantic Ocean offthe coast of the southeastern United States.The craft landed following aflight from the Patuxent River Naval Air Station in the the southeastern stateof Virginia. The X-47B has a 3,200-kilometer range and can carry theequivalent of two precision-guided bombs. It improves the prospects of along range, radar evading, unmanned reconnaissance and strike aircraft.

    Poverty In India Drops To 21.9 percent In 2011-12

    On 23 July the Planning Commission of India released its report on thePoverty Estimates for 2011-12. The report was based on the Large SampleSurveys on Household Consumer Expenditure conducted by the NationalSample Survey Office (NSSO) of the Ministry of Statistics and ProgrammeImplementation.However, since 2009-10 was not a normal year because of asevere drought, the NSSO repeated the large scale survey in 2011-12 (NSS68thround). The summary results of this survey were released in June2013.Since the data from the NSS 68th round (2011-12) of HouseholdConsumer Expenditure Survey is now available .The Planning Commissionhas updated the poverty estimates for the year 2011-12 as per themethodology recommended by Tendulkar Committee.The commissionpresent ,released estimates of state wise poverty lines for rural and urbanareas for 2011-12 .

    Poverty Estimates For 2011-12 :-

    * Poverty ratio in the country has declined to 21.9 per cent in 2011-12 from37.2 per cent in 2004-05 on account of increase in per capita consumption.

    * According to the Planning Commission, in 2011-12 for rural areas, the

    national poverty line by using the Tendulkar methodology is estimated atRs. 816 per capita per month in villages and Rs. 1,000 per capita per monthin cities.This would mean that the persons whose consumption of goods andservices exceed Rs. 33.33 in cities and Rs. 27.20 per capita per day invillages are not poor.

    * For a family of five, the all India poverty line in terms of consumptionexpenditure would amount of Rs. 4,080 per month in rural areas and Rs.5,000 per month in urban areas. The poverty line, however, will vary fromstate to state.

    * The percentage of persons below poverty line in 2004-05 was 41.8 per centin rural areas, 25.7 per cent in cities and 37.2 per cent in the country as awhole.In actual terms, there were 26.93 crore people below poverty line in2011-12 as compared to 40.71 crore in 2004-05.

    * State-wise, the Commission said the highest poverty rate of 39.93% wasrecorded in Chhattisgarh (2011-12)followed by Jharkhand (36.96 per cent),Manipur (36.89 per cent), Arunachal Pradesh (34.67 per cent) and Bihar(33.47 per cent).

    * Andhra Pradesh has become the top tourist destination in the countryrecording 206.8 million domestic tourists last year.

    * Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh stood at second and third positionsrespectively with 184.1 million and 168.4 million domestic tourists.

    * According to the data, the top ten states in terms of number of domestictourist visits (in millions) during 2012 are: Andhra Pradesh (206.8), TamilNadu (184.1), Uttar Pradesh (168.4), Karnataka (94.1), Maharashtra (66.3),Madhya Pradesh (53.2), Rajasthan (28.6), Uttarakhand (26.8), Gujarat (24.4)and West Bengal (22.7).The contribution of these States was about 84.5% tothe total number of domestic tourist visits during 2012.

    * The number of foreign tourists visiting the country too registered a growthof 6.33 per cent during the same year.

    * Maharashtra (5.1 lakh) topped the list in number of foreign tourist visits,followed by Tamil Nadu (3.6 lakhs) and New Delhi(2.3 lakhs).

    launched its advanced weather satellite Insat-3D from the spaceport ofKourou in French Guiana, using a European launch vehicle, Ariane-5 .Therocket also launched Alphasat , a co-passenger of INSAT-3D and Europeslargest telecommunication satellite-ever manufactured.Alphasat is thelargest-ever telecommunication satellite of Europe.INSAT-3D was placed inan elliptical Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO),very close to the intendedone.With a lift-off mass of 2060 kg, INSAT-3D carried four payloads Imager, Sounder, Data Relay Transponder (DRT) and Satellite Aided Search& Rescue payload.INSAT-3D will facilitate new dimension to the weathermonitoring because of its atmospheric sounding system. The atmosphericsounding system provides the vertical profiles of integrated ozone, humidityas well as temperature, from top of the atmosphere.The new satellite, INSAT-3D will be operational for next seven years.The satellite Insat-3D will give apush to the weather forecasting as well as help in facilitating disasterwarning services.
