THE HOLIDAYS ARE OVER (whew!) and your Clearwater Yacht Club is off to a great start in 2019! CYC had a great 2018, and we thank each and every member for your support. In the New Year each of us typically makes resolutions and goals for the upcom-ing year. I personally have two for our club—Engagement and Growth.

I hope to engage you to make CYC an increasing part of your 2019 resolution to become more involved in your Club. There are many ways to make this happen: committees in which all members are wel-come to attend and serve: regattas, youth sailing, the Gulls, Bow Chasers, Cruisers, and, of course, our charitable events with ARC, military families, Toys for Tots and the list goes on. Please volunteer for these activities we host and meet new friends. Likewise I encourage you to put on your thinking caps to identify some new charitable functions or introduce a cause that you may already be involved with to the Board.

Next, growth is key. Bring your friends to the club and encourage them to become members. We will reward you with a CYC Gift Certificate when you sponsor them. Our Membership Committee always welcomes your ideas about how we can appeal to new members and also retain our loyal members. Tell us what types of events you would like us to put together and be part of the organization, menu, entertain-ment, decorating, etc. Many times we can make it a member-ship event and invite friends so they can see how much fun our club provides for its members.

Inside every Compass is a 2-month calendar. Please look it over and attend as many of the meetings and events as you are able. You can simply sit in, observe, or participate. I would love to hear some fresh ideas from you. My email address is [email protected].

Carol and I look forward to seeing you at CYC!

HELLO EVERYONE from Waterside! The new year is starting out on a great foot. A lot of things are on the agenda —from sprucing up and adding to the safety and security of our docks to antici-pating our new cable and Wi-Fi system.

But first things first, our newest addition to the fleet calls for another celebration, and PC Heimensen had a great idea… let’s have a “Name that Whaler“ contest!

Each member is invited to sub-mit one 1-word name for CYC’s brand-new Boston Whaler. The top 3 names will be announced at the dock party for its christening and the winner will christen the boat with champagne. Email your suggestions to Virginia at [email protected] by February 28.

Name that Whaler!

That’s it for now. See you February 27 at the Waterside meeting or around the club.

BECOMING by Michelle Obama

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I’m your new Membership Chair Amie Crosby. I want to thank Charlie Geraci, our past Membership Chair, for his support with my new endeavor. I have some big shoes to fill, and I’m looking forward to the challenge of this position.

The Membership Committee is charged with recruiting new members as well as keeping current members happy and active. I’m a little biased, but I don’t think that there is a better club around—from our great members to our fantastic staff. That’s why I believe that our club is easy to promote! Do you have one friend that is always asking about our great events? Why not invite them to check out the club and see how they feel about joining our family!

l Did you know that there are different levels of membership? For example, we have a Junior Member-ship Level!

l Did you know that each level comes with different incentives for both new member and current?

If you ever have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or think about joining the Membership Committee. We meet the first Wednesday of every month in the Board Room. I am looking forward to a fantastic year!

By Amie Crosby, Membership Chairman

BY THE TIME you read this, we will have held the RC103 presenta-tion helping Race Committee newbies understand the intricacies of race management and how they can partici-pate. As of this writing we’ve had 35 registrants, with some coming in from other clubs. The presentation prepared by our race experts—PCs David Billing, Dick Boblenz, and Ed Proefke—was informative as well as entertaining. Hopefully this will have motivated several people to volunteer to help with our spring regattas.

Speaking of volunteering for RC, there’s still plenty of time to sign up for the Laser Mid Winter East regatta. Please email Lynne Shackelford landside, [email protected] or Dave Yoder waterside, [email protected] to let us know you’d like to help.

Other upcoming CYC yachting events include the Rainbow Regatta March 18 and the Clearwater Challenge on March 30.

We are also continuing Beer Can racing in concert with the Dunedin Boat Club. The race schedule is as follows:

Gulf SeriesJanuary 26February 16March 2 Pass-A-Grille Run BOTY Series September 28 Dunedin CupOctober 26November 23

Bay SeriesMay 24 3:53p High Tide 2.4 11:03p Low Tide 0.3May 31 5:33p Low Tide 0.1 11:45p High Tide 2.4June 21 2:41p High Tide 2.8 9:56p Low Tide 0.2June 28 3:18p Low Tide 0.7 9:25p High Tide 2.1

All Bay Series races start at 6:45 p.m. with the attempt to get two races in per date. Signal will be located at the Dundedin Boat Club’s floating dock.

Skippers can register for the Gulf races online at dunedinboatclub.org/racing-2 . NOR is posted there as well. Only the P-A-G Run and Dunedin Cup have a regis-tration fee. For CYC participants, the Gulf Race results will count toward the Robert Word award.

Lastly, we are planning some upcoming Sunset Cruises. Hopefully, by next month we will have a schedule to pub-lish in the Compass.

House aNd GRouNdsYOUR HOUSE AND GROUNDS committee has been busy working on your behalf. As I mentioned last month, we have signed contracts for a totally updated communications system, and Spectrum has already had numerous advance crews out to prepare for the upcoming work. We’ll keep everyone informed as the work progresses.

In addition, Tom and I spent a recent Saturday walk-ing the property creating a list of maintenance items that will be prioritized and completed, either by Dan or outside contractors. We will repeat the walk-through monthly to ensure that we complete the required items and add to the list as necessary. Hopefully, this will keep our building in peak condition.

Another project that has been approved by the Board is the harvesting of pavers from the Tiki Deck to replace

THE MONTH OF February is the smallest when it comes to the number of its days, but it is also one of the largest when it comes to special events, holidays, and the promise of better days to come.

Although it is often marked by the continuing dark-ness of winter, it also provides us with the first unmis-takable signs that the hours of daylight are definitely on the rise.

For our northern neighbors (and at times even for us Floridians) February is often the coldest month of the year with a long history of record-breaking snowfall, but it is also marked by the visible appearance of soon to emerge buds on maple trees and the first spring flowers poking their heads though the melting snow. On occa-sion, there are days in places like Huntington Bay, Long Island, when the temperature will climb into the high 60’s or even the low 70’s, and the ice in the harbors and bays will begin to recede.

Holiday speaking, February introduces us once again

broken tiles in the Tiki and pool area and allow for future replacements. At the same time the grout will be checked and repaired as necessary. This will all be accomplished by creating a dance floor out of differ-ent material which will blend into the other pavers. This will eliminate the tedious set-up and removal of the portable dance floor for functions and allow us to put tables on that section when not in use. Work will be scheduled so that the least amount of disruption to our members is created. Your patience will be appreci-ated. We have Jack France to thank for the idea, the effort involved in getting bids and following through on execution going forward—another example of mem-bership in action.

Speaking of the Tiki Bar, our dumbwaiter is working again, and steps have been taken to hopefully keep it up and running. To be safe, however, we continue to investigate bids for a replacement unit should the need arise.

House and Grounds meets at 6 pm the first Tuesday each month. All members are not only welcome but encouraged to attend. Please join us!

to a famous groundhog named Phil (not to be con-fused with our Commodore), the birthdays of Wash-ington and Lincoln, Valentine’s Day, and, at CYC, the arrival of sailors from around the world who will compete in regattas hosted by our own world-class Race Committee.

All of which make this shortest month of the year a special time to enjoy the company of family and friends, the fellowship and special activities at CYC, and the promise of warmer days on the water to come. May it bring days of blessing, celebration, and gratitude your way!

Happy February!Fr Bob(727) 510-6153 [email protected]

OVER 40 LADIES attended the January Ladies’ Luncheon to hear our speaker, Joe Pine from Metro Crime Prevention of Florida. Did you know that for only about $30 (free if you’re over 65) you can lock your credit? Where do you hide your valuables in your house? Joe offered some very inexpensive and creative ideas for storage containers. What a wonderful presentation on identity theft, safety and general walking around sense.

Gift certificates to the club were awarded to our Thought-for-the-Day winners, Deb Aune and Celeste Smallwood. Keep ideas coming. We will have another contest in March.

March 20 is also going to be an exciting program. Susan Santangelo, the author of the Baby Boomer Mystery series, will be our speaker. Her website is babyboomermysteries.com. You can find her books on Amazon if you would like to read one (or two or three) before the luncheon.

Mark your calendar for Wednesday, April 17. Sign of the Dolphin will be presenting our spring Fashion Show.

On all other Wednesdays a group of us will be meeting in the Gulls Nest between 10:30-11am to socialize and then have lunch upstairs at noon. Come join us for some or all of our adventures.

General Manager’s letterBy Tom Brusini, General ManagerSUPERBOWL SUNDAY opens the month of February!

Hosts Joe and Helen Correia are hosting this party for yet another year. Thank you! The fun begins at 5 p.m. Sunday, February 3. Since it’s the Patriots vs the Rams, you just know it’s going to be a great game! We’ll have our killer football menu—wings, dogs, ribs, nachos—you name it! We’re hop-ing the weather is perfect for us to party downstairs, but if not, we’ll simply come upstairs as we did years ago to watch the big game. Oh, yeah, that football pool that Helen runs…count on it! $10 gets you a chance to win $200 or $400!

Now’s the time to reserve your table for our annual

Valentine’s Dinner Dance on Saturday, Feb. 9—held before the actual holiday so you can stay late and dance! This will be a dressy night, so polish those dancing shoes, try on that pretty dress, and call for your table. Dinner will be served banquet style with a set menu, so reservations are paramount, please!

Since the actual Valentine’s Day is on a Thursday, we’re featuring our Valentine’s Couples Dinner, along with the one and only Stacey Bridenback playing TEAM TRIVIA!

There are only a few club parties in which members cook

and bring their best recipes. One of the favorites is the CHOWDAH CHALLENGE! Hosted by Helen Correia (seems

like February is her favorite month!), this year it will Sunday, Feb. 17. Dust off those recipes and enter yours now!

Would you like to be part of a world-class Race Committee, with an international reputation for excellence in race man-agement? Our biggest regatta begins with registration on February 20. We will need over 70 volunteers to help, on the water in the Gulf of Mexico and landside at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center. It’s a four-day regatta, so if you can help on any or all of the days it would be much appreciated--and you’ll have fun!

CruisersBy Don and Joan Carter Cruising Chairpersons

WITH THE HELP and planning of our Cruiser members, we’ve been able to put together a fun and exciting first four trips. Our first trip of the year was scheduled for January 24-27 to Sarasota. Unfortunately, Mother Nature intervened. With a forecast of cold temperatures and rain, we decided to cancel. A good decision.

This month we have a romantic getaway planned for Valentine’s Day weekend to Twin Dolphin Marina in Bradenton,

The Tampa Bay Convention Center docks are our destina-tion in March to celebrate the “luck of the Irish.”

In April we will take a short jaunt to downtown to St. Petersburg Yacht Club. We are looking for sponsors for each of these excursions. The rest of the year is still in the plan-ning stages, although we are considering a long trip to the Bahamas in June. If you are interested in hosting, please call 972-877-0845 or contact me at [email protected].

Please join us at our meetings the second Wednesday of each month.
