CAMPING BLURB

This years Tramping Camp, directed by Tim Wiel, was another epic CYC camp. Good weather, challenging experiences, a hut mainly to ourselves and great fellowship together in the outdoors all contributed to it being a great tramp away. The Mt Somers Alpine Walkway provides a basic yet challenging entry level tramp for who were reasonably young first time trampers. This is the type of camp, being in the outdoors away from the mod-cons and technology, gives a great opportunities for leaders to present the Gospel message and to share their Christian faith with young people.

14 riders participated in the Cavalcade Camp directed by Kate McLaren. They rode up and around Mt Benger just before Christmas. The bible talks held in the evenings were from the first 2 books of Luke on the conversations Mary had, firstly with the angel Gabriel, her relation Elizabeth, the shepherds and finally Simeon. These were very well received and did prompt some questions and a little discussions. It was a very happy camp where at times some riders were pushed outside of their comfort zone, this lead to a great sense of achievement and satisfaction.

The Girls Horse Trek was organised by Joanne Bullin and the program was directed by Lisa Bullin. Lisa lead once camp started and did an incredible job. Sarah Leslie spoke very well about The Parable of the Sower, giving a clear gospel message with good questions in a book she made. Alf again did a fantastic job helping with horses and tracks. He is the main reason we can do this camp each year. Although campers no longer seem to be able to effortlessly ride more long distance like we used to, we did enjoy riding over lovely dry tracks in beautiful weather, enjoying the beauty of God’s wonderful creation here in South Otago.

CAMPING BLURB

The Boys Summer Camp, directed by Grant Bullin, had the themed program of ‘Olympics - Run the race’. It worked very well inter-connecting Bible time talks with the suggested programmed activities. The camp speaker was Lewis Bacon from OAC in Hamilton. Although camp had a rough start, not being able to securing key staff (director, cooks and speaker) until very late, we can thank the Lord for His overruling. The campers were “behaviorally challenging” but on the whole the camp was satisfying and rewarding. We know of eight boys that either made first time commitments to run the race or were set back on course, to run the race.

There was track and field events held at McDonald Picnic Ground and the Lake and surrounding grounds were utilised as the aquatic events venue for the Olympic events. Each night one “Olympic village” (cabin group) slept in the bell tent located close to the ablution block, this included a special supper of toasting marshmallows over an open fire (the Lord was again gracious as the total fire ban came into effect the day after camp finished). Good use was made of the CYC activities of archery, air rifles, zip line, go-carts and horses.

The Girls Summer Camp, directed by Amy Bullin, was such an encouragement to be involved in. God blessed us with fantastic weather, a great bunch of girls with no major behavioral issues and a fantastic team of leaders who assisted in the smooth running of the camp program. The theme “Going for Gold” was excellent for tying the talks and activities together.

Jessica Smith was the speaker and she did an amazing job. The talks were at a great level for the girls to understand and her preparation and enthusiasm for the theme was phenomenal. The talks focused on starting the race with Jesus, keeping going when its hard, focus to endure, be

encouraged and winning gold with Hebrews 12.1 “…let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fxing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith…” being the key verse for the week.

The Adventure Camp, directed by Brenda Duthie, was summed up by one leader after camp as “epic”. The activities during the week included (amongst others): Survivor Challenge on a cooler summers day at Lake Waihola; a day at Adventure Masters near Outram doing hire ropes, SAR exercises, abseiling, compound bow archery and small bore rifle shooting; Taieri River kayaking; Horse Trekking in Owaka; river tubing; sailing on Lake Waihola; water sliding and much much more.

The talks were presented by Nathan Leslie who broke down John 3:16 into 4 evangelistic talks that we pray the Holy Spirit uses to make the campers think about their relationship with God.

This camp relied on good weather, safety, a lot of “risk management paperwork” and tonnes of organisation all which the Lord graciously gave us.

We have much to be thankful for after a spectacular summer camping season. Please continue to pray for the ministry of CYC, that our God may be pleased to continue using this ministry to bring souls to Himself.

There have been a couple of ideas floating around the office for the last few of months that I would like to share / request of you if you are interested.

Just before Christmas we sold some beef cattle to the works. These cattle were reared here at CYC Waihola by Grant Bullin, our previous Executive Officer, about 2 years ago. They were tagged with our NAIT tags, weaned and sent to variousfarms of some of our supporters to become part of their herds until they were sold. As a result CYC Waihola received a large sum of money from the selling of these beef cattle - the beef price being so good and all. The thought is why can’t we do this every year. Since Amy and I are focusing more of our time on school groups and our ministry camps perhaps those that share our vision and have cattle herds could raise two or three or maybe even ten for CYC Waihola each year and when the time is right sell them on our behalf – we can even supply you with our NAIT tags. Get in

touch with Tim if this is something you could be interested in.

We are after some retired folk to be our “maintenance men” to lend a hand once or twice a month for a few days on-site to try and tick off some of our maintenance jobs that are not getting done. Its amazing what can be achieved when there is a extra pair of hands on-site.

We also have two upcoming Work Days: 21st February (the painting prep day) 28th February (the painting day)It is a perfect opportunity to come and lend a hand.

There are three main ways that you can support us here at CYC Waihola…

You can pray for the work and ministry of CYC Waihola:• Contact us to sign up to our prayer mailing list

You can physically support us by:• Volunteering at our camps as a leader - its good fun and a great way to serve

in the ministry of CYC. We are always after cabin leaders, cooks, speakers and even being a camp parent just helping around camp is of great importance.

• Volunteer to do some much needed work around our camp property. We never say no to an extra pair of hands. There is gardening, lawn mowing, cleaning and much much more that sometimes we just don’t get time to do ourselves.

You can financially support us by:• Donating to the ministry of CYC by cheque or internet banking (please put

“donation” down in the reference field).

• Sponsoring a camper to attend a CYC camp. Many campers are unable to afford the camp fees that we set even though they are priced below cost. To sponsor a camper by contributing to the sponsorship fund please send us a cheque or use internet banking (please put “sponsorship” in the reference field)

Our bank account number is 03 0905 0937076 00.

All donations and sponsorship are tax deductible and if you provide us with your postal address we will send a donation receipt out to you at the end of the financial year.
