CAMPING BLURB

This year Pony Camp dusted off their jodhpurs, donned their riding jackets, polished their riding boots, spruced up their ponies & embraced all things British. Pictures of royalty on horseback graced the hallway walls, Union Jacks flew from the windows. The warm autumn days were full of Polo games, a “3 Day Event” squished into one day, a “Fox” Hunt, a Gymkhana, a “Hunt Ball” and daily etiquette lessons. Liz Dimbleby also did a great job presenting a clear gospel message in the evenings. This camp had such a great group of campers and leaders and it was a pleasure to see everyone improve in their horsemanship skills throughout the week.

Hunting Camp is an invigorating camp for boys to attend. This year they had nine campers and were blessed with 8 pigs, 11 geese, 1 deer, 24 goats and plenty of rabbits and hares. Skills were taught in hunting, stalking deer, tracking pigs with GPS collars, boning out and preparing meat for the table and teaching the boys suitable meat for steaks, mince, stew, roasts, etc.

Paul focussed on “Ask and it will be given to you seek and you shall find, Knock and it shall be opened to you” over the week, looking at the text from different angles and looking at the day to day application as well as the overall spiritual application. The campers got to see God answer several prayers regarding their hunting, lost and found dogs, suitable prey, their safety, their health and suitable weather to hunt in.

Going Deeper Camp was organised by the talented Mr & Mrs Bayne duo. This camp is a great resource for any Christian wanting to be refreshed and challenged in their faith. The layout of camp is fantastic at equipping young people for life through Bible teaching, practical lessons and discussion. The weekend covered lessons like: Understanding the Bible, Apologetics / Defending the Faith, Knowing Gods Will and Independent Living (budgeting, flatting). The highlight was learning and studying together in a relax environment with fun discussion and practical exercises.

CAMPING BLURB

The Girls Winter Camp, directed by Jill Kumar, can be summed up with one word “great”. Great program, great leaders, great kids, great speaker, great cooks and great activities based around the polarising theme of “Frozen”. Our wonderful God stepped in and provided the perfect environment for the camp, giving us enough snow to make Olafs (our Frozen snowman character) and have a snow fight, but also providing us safe roads the next day, so that we could get to ice-skating in Dunedin! Throughout the week Gail gave captivating talks and ran a very well attended and entertaining daily voluntary prayer time.

The Southern Lads Camp was once again directed by the legendary Alf Bradfield. It is very hard to find out to much information about what happens on the Southern Lads Camp. All we know is that 10 fit, enthusiastic, clean and keen boys depart to the Bradfield farm on Monday. Then on Friday, 10 tired and dirty boys return with large smiles bursting with stories. What they do in between is a bit of a mystery – we do know that they shot a pig, saw several deer, got very dirty and slept in a wool-shed. This camp is the chance to do all the things that urban boys don’t usually do in the city (farming, possum trapping, hut building, track clearing and hunting) as well as having great discussion around Christian things in the mornings and evenings.

The Boys Winter Camp was directed by Sam and Karyn Duthie (along with baby Emma in attendance). We had 30 boys attend this Wild West themed camp. For this year’s camp the cabin groups were named after Indian tribes and they did activities such as horse riding, building tepees, riding a bucking bronco, gun slinging competition and other western type activities. John Laing spoke about the Christian life with a western style running through his talks including such things as how the west was won and the need for law and order and how we need our hearts won over to Christ. This camp was a very well organised camp and we were blessed with fine weather throughout the week.

The House Party Camp had a very capable first time director, Esther Hankinson, along with 10 girls, 2 leaders and a cook who altogether had a fantastic week. For many of the girls it was their first teenage camp experience and due to the small number of people in attendance this camp really did have a family atmosphere. Several talented guests came in during the week and taught the girls weaving, tie dying, card making, jewellery making and cupcake decorating. During the week the girls heard talks from various people all surrounding the big question of “Who is Jesus?”. This camp did struggle with sickness in leaders so we can thank God that he blessed the camp to continue and His hand of Grace was over all.

The Winter Leadership Camp was organised by Tim and Amy. They had some great speakers come in over the weekend to share about how to give your testimony, evangelism at camp and how to lead devotions. Again this Leadership Camp was very encouraging, its always exciting seeing so many people passionate about the Gospel coming together to encourage one another and grow together. The terrible weather did not dampen the spirits or put off the crucial activity training. They had the go-cart training under the front porch of the Main Building and flying fox training in the hall. In total there were 27 involved in the weekend many of whom came back a month later to lead on camps.

Over the next month or so CYC Waihola is continuing to develop the Short to Long term Strategic Plan for our future that was started 3 years ago.

In May 2013, CYC Waihola invited Brett Johnson from Auckland to facilitate a weekend of good hard looking at what we do and start to evaluate if it is working and how can we do it better. We also looked at which parts of what we are doing are really important and which are not.

To continue this journey CYC Waihola plans to poll key people within our organisation (such as society members; ministry camp leaders; camp directors; and other interested folk) with a “hard questions” booklet.

If you don’t receive one of these in the next two weeks and would like to be involved then please email [email protected] to get one sent out to you.

All the feedback will be worked through by our Strategic Direction Working group to put together a plan of what is important / not important for the future, to make recommendations to Council.

We prayerfully hope that this process enables us to better serve the Lord in our Ministry of reaching the young (and old) with the Gospel of Hope.

Items for Practical Need:Our building committee that oversees the facility and camp-site is moving quickly in their planning for: • our New Office/Resource Building – an estimated cost of $50,000

• continuing the Main Lodge Kitchen Upgrade with a plan of action – the first is the purchase of a new fridge unit

• finishing the upgrade of the Main Lodge Female Bathroom with new vinyl, a third shower to be installed and brand new partition dividers

All these projects are costly and we are seeking financial support to complete them – if you feel you would like to give towards these building projects please be in contact the with CYC Office for details.

There are three main ways that you can support us…

You can pray for the work and ministry of CYC Waihola:• Contact us to sign up to our prayer mailing list

You can physically support us by:• Volunteering at our camps as a leader – it is good fun and a great way to serve

in the ministry of CYC. We are always after cabin leaders, cooks, speakers and even being a camp parent just helping around camp is of great importance.

You can financially support us by:• Donating to the ministry of CYC by cheque or internet banking (please put

“donation” down in the reference field).

• Sponsoring a camper to attend a CYC camp. Many campers are unable to afford the camp fees that we set even though they are priced below cost. To sponsor a camper by contributing to the sponsorship fund please send us a cheque or use internet banking (please put “sponsorship” in the reference field)

Our bank account number is 03 0905 0937076 00.

All donations and sponsorships are tax deductible and if you provide us with your postal address we will send a donation receipt out to you at the end of the financial year.
