The Year 2020 will be re-membered for changing the way we all define normal. The year 2021 offers us hope that as the Coronavirus vaccine is administered, we will return to some-thing close to our old normal.

At CYC, 2020 has also been a year of unprecedented change, led by the resignation of two general managers. What are we going to do during the interim when we are without a full-time manager?

Our very well-regarded Office Manager, Virginia, will once again serve as Acting GM. She will be assisted by our Food and Beverage Manager, Michael Irwin. Assistant Office Manager Mary will also step up to help.

In early January, the Board will also develop a six-month business plan to guide us through this interim time. We will hone our selection criteria and focus on how to set up the new general manager for success.

One of the questions members ask is, what is the condition of our docks and clubhouse? How can we ever afford to replace one or both of them? The Board approved forming a Capital Improvements Committee. The committee will focus on evaluating our facilities, determining if they need repair or replacement and how to pay for any improvements.

Please know that we are enforcing Covid safety measures. If you have seen the plexiglass dividers used to shield the food stations at our Sunday Brunch, you know the lengths our staff goes to keep you safe.

Please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I appreciate the opportunity to serve as your Commodore for 2021.

IT IS MY pleaSure to be con-tinuing in the role of Yachting Chair for 2021. With such a challenging year in 2020, we managed to pull off our goal to “Put the ‘Y’ back in CYC,” and I greatly appreciate the support of our dedicated Race Committee mem-bers and volunteers who made that possible.

For 2021, we are starting off strong supporting the Florida Olympic Class Series https://ocr.ussailing.org/ February 4-7. We have a team of volunteers, led by Gerard Kane, gathering up the necessary equipment and volunteers. This is a great opportunity to get out on the water and witness Olympic class racing. Train-ing will be provided.

March 6 is the Clearwater to Pass-A-Grille Run Re-gatta, in partnership with the Dunedin Boat Club (who can field the most boats—them or us?). We will begin the regatta Friday, March 5 with a skippers’ meeting at the Tiki bar. Gather up your boat and crew now, and plan to join us for a fun race. We will finish up Satur-day night with awards and merriment at the Pass-A-Grille Yacht Club, where we will be provided compli-mentary dockage.

For those who are more interested in cruising than rac-ing their sailboats, Rob and I are traveling to Captiva Island and points in between from January 16-24. I hope to plan more of these cruising trips throughout the year. Where do you want to go?

The next Yachting meeting is Tuesday, January 26 at 6 p.m.

I hope everyone had a joyous holiday season - Happy New Year!

CYC New Members

I aM honored to be elected to serve as CYC’s 2021 Fleet Captain and will do my best to deserve that honor. I appreciate the help I have received from our Rear Commodore and offers of support from many others.

CYC is a long-standing member of the Florida Council of Clubs (FCYC), the most exclusive yacht club organi-zation in Florida. Because of our membership, we need to maintain our docks to represent our club to others as well as for the enjoyment of our members.

We will start implementing a plan to improve the ap-pearance of our marina. I will begin by walking the docks with the GM and scheduling time with Dan and Linda (Maintenance and Dockmaster) to discuss some necessary improvements.

I will ask the board for approval, in the future, for ad-ditional help needed to maintain our current docks until we can replace or recondition them. We will also be reviewing the slip leases, updating the hurricane check-list, log sheets and procedures for the use of our fleet. I will gain a better understanding of the duties of each staff member that takes care of the fleet and sailing equipment.

Waterside committee meetings are on the last Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. There will be an extra committee meeting in January right after the holidays.

one Year ago, we had no idea what was coming our way. Perhaps that’s the definition of a “New Year!” We enter it with resolutions (in some cases hangovers), but in most cases with hopes and dreams for the days and months that lie ahead. It all starts off as a clean slate, but at times what will be written lies well beyond our control.

Those who celebrated the New Year in 1941 had little if any idea that Pearl Harbor would bring the year to a tragic and life-changing conclusion; one that would turn the world upside down for years to come. And much the same will surely be written about the events which followed January 1, 2020. However, whether 1941 or 2020, there are many choices which do remain within our power to make, no matter what the future may hold, among which are the following:

We have the power to: n Love the people around usn forgive n be generous n be kindn bring comfort to those who mournn encourage one anothern over come evil with goodn pray and not to cursen respect the dignity of othersn seek the common good

“We do not have the power to change the wind, but we do have the power to adjust our course and trim our sails.”

A new year has begun. With what ever may come, may God give us the wisdom, power and courage we need to make 2021 a good one.

Happy New Year!Fr [email protected]

As an early Christmas/Hanukkah pres-ent to all committee members, in thanks for their efforts this past year, we did not hold an Entertainment Committee meet-ing in December.

December 19 we held the Tinsel and Tides social on the drydock. Thanks to Christy Crist, Jim Hannigan and Olivia Prince in putting that together.

We celebrated New Year’s Eve, bidding good riddance to 2020 and welcoming in 2021 at the Tiki bar and dry-dock with music by Shades. We held it downstairs so more members could participate while maintaining COVID re-strictions. We took advantage of the food station concept that worked so splendidly at Sunday Brunch and Change of Watch.

Saturday, January 16, plan to come to the Pirate Party. Even though Gasparilla is postponed, we will still hold an outdoor gathering at the Tiki bar for this January tradition. Jim Hannigan, CYC’s “Captain Morgan,” will be leading the effort.

Finally, Saturday, January 23, we have booked, by popular demand, Dueling Pianos. This time it will be outside on the drydock. Join us for some great entertainment. More details will follow.

And now for something completely different: Yacht Club Trivia. I recently learned why some yacht clubs include the word “Corinthian” in their name. Any ideas? Text me at (727) 641-8633 with your answer and your name. I will buy the third member who texts me the correct answer a drink at the Tiki bar.

Finally, we are looking forward to scheduling a couple of key events each month in 2021, taking the latest COVID restrictions into account, and continuing to find and book live music when practical so that when you are looking for somewhere to go, you continue to join your CYC family for a great time!

The next Entertainment meeting is Tuesday, January 12 at 6:00 p.m. Until then, I can be reached at [email protected] or on my cellphone by text or voice at (727) 641-8633.

Happy New Year, CYC!

HOuse and grOuNdsBy gregory Crist, Vice CommodoreWelCoMe To 2021 and a whole new year!

Traditionally, the turning of the calendar brings about time for reflection and New Year’s resolutions. As we wave goodbye to 2020, our House and Grounds team has one simple resolution this year! Make CYC a club our members feel is warm, welcoming and a safe environment.

First, we appreciate your patience with the facilities. Our clubhouse is going through a number of important updates which include bathrooms, electrical and other

construction/maintenance items. While some of these repairs were anticipated, other items were also in need of attention, which caused significant and unexpected delays. The great news to share is that work is nearly complete.

Next, our culinary team has brought back some of your seasonal menu favorites in the Grille and down at the Tiki bar. If you haven’t checked out Chef John’s new specials yet, be sure to do so.

Finally, we have a number of important objectives to ac-complish in 2021. If you have an interest in getting more involved at CYC, the House and Grounds Committee is a great place to start.

I look forward to seeing you around the club! Have a question or comment? Share it with me at: [email protected]

Cheers!

By Anita Cafferty, Bow Chasers Publicity“I goT noThIng!”

I always wanted to start an article that way, and unfortunately today, that is the grim reality. The Bow Chasers have always been known to be a fun-loving group of gals. We are either trying to fit our less than ‘swell-t’ shapes into our itty-bitty prams and sail…er…frolic around the basin of CYC, or gathering at various holiday parties, drinking wine, having ecstatic taste feasts, sam-pling each and every culinary masterpiece, and we always man-age to save room for Carmen’s out-of-this-world homemade flan.

Although we are, of course, elated that our own Mary Kay Delk has become the new Commodore, every other activity we had planned for December was cancelled. I guess the silver lining is that without all the parties, imbibing and eating ... our less than ‘swell-t’ bodies might just be able to fit into our itty-bitty prams a little easier.

Happy New Year all!
