DEMONSTRATION MASS WITH FATHER TOM January 11, 6:30PM Church Do you remember why we gather at the Mass? What does Amen mean in Hebrew? Are you actively engaged during the homily trying to see if you can find God’s one thing he is telling you? Mass is more than a meal or an hour of obligation. If you are new to Catholicism, or you are a 100-year old, lifelong Catholic, you are invited to our Demonstration Mass. Fr. Tom will walk through each step of the Mass and explain the traditions, and why each step is important to our faith journey. This is an instructional demonstration Mass not a full Mass so there will not be a consecration of the Eucharist.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE HOUSE January 12, by 4:30PM Drop Off St. John’s Hallway Entrance Our Lady of Guadalupe House is an organization run by the Sisters of the Fraternity Missionaries of the Poor of Jesus Christ. The Sisters reach out to the poor and homeless in Kansas City, Kansas, and Church of the Ascension provides them with supplies needed for their ministry. If you are interested in supporting the Sisters with their cause by donating supplies, please visit the Church of the Ascension homepage at kcascension.org, and click on the bookmark Volunteer Signups, then click on Our Lady of Guadalupe House.

Please drop off supplies to the St. John hallway entrance by 4:30pm on the second Tuesday of the month. Our next date is Tuesday, January 12.

    WEEKLY PRAYER

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD It may seem obvious that the theme for the Baptism of the Lord is “water,” but when one spends time with the readings today, one can see many different connotations for that water and its power. Isaiah calls the poor who are thirsty and tired to come to the water and take the spiritual food and drink that will be provided if we but seek the Lord. Here, God is both destination and consolation. The responsorial psalm follows suit with the image of drawing water from the springs of salvation. 1 John takes us to the reality of Christ as Eucharist: not only Jesus’ birth and baptism, but his death, as we hear that Jesus came “by water and by blood.” The Gospel depicts John baptizing Jesus with water, and the Spirit baptizing Jesus. We experience both the humanity and the divinity of Christ. Indeed, water has much power to save us. BEING THE MESSENGER When we go to a pop music concert, there is often an opening act. Usually they are a young group on their way up, or older musicians who are past their prime and still hanging on in the business. This is indeed a hard job. In the comedy world it is the same thing. You have to warm up the crowd. You are not who they are coming to see, and audiences may be unresponsive, come in late, or not pay a lot of attention. Yet John had no problem being the opening act, the messenger, the harbinger of faith for Jesus. He was very devout in his faith and knew what his role was. Many Jews were actively seeking a messiah, and he was quick to let them know that he was not the one for whom they were waiting. “I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” Yet he conducted his ministry with faith and hope. BEING THE MESSAGE As John humbly carried out his mission and Jesus accepted this simple baptism by John, the Holy Spirit indeed came down upon Jesus, and God proclaimed for the first time, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Thus Jesus began his formal ministry. There must have been much that he already knew, but also much that he uncovered each day in his encounters with the disciples and the crowds. As he responded “yes” to the Father over and over, his thirst was quenched and his spirit strengthened. How many times do we witness baptisms in the parish? The priest ministers with simple elements of water and oil, but the Spirit is called down each time. Every time we participate, we are experiencing the message, experiencing the call again. How many times have we blessed ourselves with holy water, or participated in a sprinkling rite? Yet in these days, when church fonts are empty due to safety precautions, we need to remember those other times, trust in God, and sing the prayer of Isaiah in our hearts about drawing the water joyfully. We must trust in the message. We must become the message of God’s saving action through our baptism and our lives.

  • RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY Intentions Most of us settle into routines in all facets of our lives. This occurs even in areas we consider of primary importance such as our prayer lives and our commitment to the unborn. We may notice that our particular intentions have become rote or seemingly stale, if so consider some of the following intentions suggested by 40 Days for Life.

Pray for God’s protection of all unborn babies threatened by abortion. Pray for mothers that they love their children from the moment of conception; have the courage to face all challenges to their pregnancies; that they turn to God for help; overcome the temptation of abortion and receive the support they need. Pray for fathers that they be committed to raising their children and caring for their mothers. Pray for all who participate in abortion that they repent, receive the forgiveness of God and follow Him. Pray God’s grace and healing on mothers who have had abortions and for crisis pregnancy centers. Pray for Godly wisdom in our government and courts and that God will strengthen/aid pro-life officials. Pray that God will direct a profound spiritual awakening in our local community and country. Ask God how you can best help end abortion in the days, weeks and months ahead.

Just a few suggestions-there are many more. In 2021, it is our obligation to remain “fresh” in our service to God and the unborn.

    COMMUNITY NEWS

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION A Spiritual Work of Mercy Over 30 years ago, Roe v. Wade legalized abortion throughout the entire nine months of pregnancy which has resulted in over 60 million abortions since 1973. The late Archbishop Fulton Sheen encouraged the spiritual adoption of an unborn child to help bring an end to this tragedy. A “Spiritual Adoption” is done by praying the following prayer daily for a period of nine months so that one particular, but unknown, child’s life be spared abortion and allowed to live: Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of [choose a name for the baby you are ‘adopting’ and insert here], the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.” ~Prayer of Archbishop Fulton Sheen While this child will remain unknown to you, God knows who the child is and your prayers will make a difference for the baby and for both of the parents. At the end of the program (September, 2021), you can donate gifts of baby items to a local pregnancy center to celebrate the birth of the child.

TEENS ENCOUNTER CHRIST January 16-18 Prairie Star Ranch, Williamsburg, KS. We made the difficult decision not to take a delegation to March for Life in January in DC. But this opens up the possibility for teens to attend the Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) retreat. We will provide a small group retreat experience for high schoolers on January 16-18, 2021 at Prairie Star Ranch (PSR). We will be following social distancing and other safety procedures that allowed Camp Tekakwitha to happen. TEC is a 3-day retreat based on the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ. TEC involves 16 and older adolescents encountering Christ in a way that many have never experienced before. On a TEC retreat, you will have the opportunity to grow in your relationship with Christ through talks, group discussion, individual reflection, prayer, and sharing in the Sacraments. The weekend retreats are led by a team of youth, adults and a priest as spiritual director. To sign up go to: www.sunflowertec.org.
