STEWARDSHIP

“Jesus said to her, ‘Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?” (John 11:40)

Many of us say that we believe in God. We go to church on Sunday. We volunteer for events at our parish. But when life gets hard and the pressure is on, when things aren’t going our way, do we really believe and put our trust in the Lord? When we live a life of gratitude, being thankful for the gifts we have been given, we really do see that God is providing all that we need. It opens our hearts to see God’s active presence in our daily lives.

UPDATED CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION INFORMATION

Due to the Shelter in Place order for Johnson County it is necessary for us to restrict access to our church facilities since we are not considered an essential entity. Therefore, unfortunately and regretfully, the church doors will be secured as long as this order is in place. I can not tell you how upset I am about this situation. I know that many of you derive such spiritual peace and calm just being in the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Unfortunately the church doors must be secured for the indefinite future. However, in order to provide some time for Eucharistic prayer beginning March 25, at 12:00pm we will have 30 minutes of Eucharistic exposition and adoration with a blessing. You can access this by logging on to kcascension.org on the internet. This will be done each day Monday through Friday at 12:00pm so feel free to log-on and join in this time of prayer. This is in addition to our live recording of the weekday Mass at 7:00am.

For the time being we are also not able to offer times for confessions in the church. For those who truly need the Sacrament of Reconciliation we invite you to contact the priest for an appointment. Rectory number is 913-851-5919. Remember you can also make a sincere act of contrition for venial sins and receive forgiveness. If in the future other arrangements can be made for Reconciliation, we will post that through email and our website.

Those in need of the Anointing of the Sick are also asked to contact the priests at 913-851-5919. Leave a message if necessary. We are encouraging people to delay baptism of infants until after the Shelter in Place order is lifted. Private baptism may be arranged if necessary. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated at an appropriate time after the order is lifted. Rescheduling will most likely be necessary; we will just be on hold for now.

I am sure that many of you are as distressed as your priests are that we cannot join in prayer in the church. Be assured that the Lord is with you....yes in your home and in your heart. Jesus promised to be with us always....even in the

midst of a pandemic. We all need to draw close to the Lord and support each other in prayer. Please be assured that as we priests celebrate Mass each day each of you is held in our hearts and remembered in prayer. This too will pass and we will soon (not soon enough!) be able to join together physically as a community to celebrate our faith and experience Christ's love in the Eucharist. In the meantime we are joined together spiritually through God's

grace and our bond of prayer.

God’s Blessings, Father Tom

Therefore we will continue in prayer at our appointed times and our vigil will stand. Our God will hear us. Church of the Ascension 5th Sunday of Lent March 29, 2020

Fifth Sunday of Lent Greater Than You Expect Sometimes a prophet says more than he intended. Ezekiel in the first reading is talking about restoring Israel after the Babylonian exile. The Jews saw the Exile as punishment for their sins, especially the sin of relying on false gods or political leaders for their safety. God demonstrates forgiveness by bringing them back to Israel; God also shows them divine power and glory so that they return to the Lord for their protection. Ezekiel uses the image of the dead rising from their graves (37:12). Jesus came to show us God in a new way and to fulfill the promises of all previous prophecies. Notice how the first reading repeats two phrases: "open your graves" and "know that I am the LORD." Jesus demonstrates that God's promise is much greater than anything Ezekiel expected. First, the Gospel. When Jesus went to the tomb of Lazarus, he apparently waited till his friend had died. He knew that he was going to raise Lazarus from death to help his disciples believe. So why was he "perturbed and deeply troubled"? It could be that he was disappointed that his friends did not seem to believe that he could raise Lazarus. Notice Jesus became perturbed again when some of the crowd question Jesus' ability to do so (John 11:37-38). Like Ezekiel, the people of Jesus' time did not expect him literally to raise the dead. But God used the prophet's message to prepare for Jesus' message that not only would he rise from the dead, but we will also. And like the friends and relatives of Lazarus, we too may find it hard to believe, or at least question how it could be possible. Fortunately, Jesus helps with that, too. Look at the second reading to the Romans. Because we have God's Spirit living in us, we who are sinners can be raised to new life by that Spirit. When our sins are forgiven, we begin to live a new life by loving the people we hurt by our sins, forgiving people who have hurt us, being more concerned for the poor than for our own comfort. We are freed from worrying about the future, from holding onto grudges, and perhaps even from the fear of death itself--all because we have experienced the new life of God's Spirit and, as Ezekiel says, know that God is the LORD.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES

9

Dear Friends in Christ, At Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, the health and safety of our staff, volunteers and those we serve are of the utmost importance in fulfilling our mission. With the outbreak of COVID-19, each of our unique programs have developed and implemented sanitization processes and measures to help reduce the risk of spreading the virus while continuing to respond to those in need during this difficult time. Because of the local business closures, many of those we serve have been placed in financial hardship and many will be without food. Our top priorities, over the next few weeks, are to ensure our food, shelter and healthcare ministries remain intact including: Family Support Centers, Resource Bus, Shalom House men’s shelter, Catholic Community Hospice and In-Home Support. Effective 3/18/2020 thru the next 2 weeks:

All office locations, with the exception of our Family Support Centers, will be closed to the public.

Family Support Centers will offer services 3-days a week: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (with Wednesdays and Fridays devoted to deep cleaning).

All TurnStyles Thrift stores will be closed for shopping and donation drop-offs.

Safety remains top-of-mind as we operate some of our essential services to help our neighbors in need. We will continue to follow the protocols of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and local health departments while continuing to provide help, hope, and hospitality to individuals and families in need.

Many in our community are looking to Catholic Charities for disaster relief. Therefore, we remain in need of food. Volunteers are also needed for our distribution efforts, as well as within our Friendly Visitors/Ring-A-Day program to provide phone calls and letters to the elderly experiencing isolation within many of our nursing facilities. If you are interested in helping our neighbors in need at this time, please visit: https://catholiccharitiesks.org/covid19/

If you volunteer with Catholic Charities and are uncomfortable serving with us, we encourage you to refrain from volunteer service at this time. If you are experiencing any form of illness (i.e. cold, cough, etc.), please suspend your volunteer service with Catholic Charities immediately. Also, if you are returning from international travel, you are required to stay at home for 14 days, monitor your health, and practice “social distancing” by limiting in-person interactions with others. Please update us about your status by contacting our volunteer department at [email protected] or 913-433.2081.

Thank you for your support during this difficult time. We pray for those impacted by the virus and that everyone will follow the recommended precautions to prevent further spread of this disease in our communities. If there is any change in our services going forward, we will provide an update on our website, https://catholiccharitiesks.org/, and our social media channels:

https://www.facebook.com/CCNEK/ https://twitter.com/CCNEK

Just as our Lenten penance is meant to deepen our relationship with God and our solidarity with all who suffer as the Lord did, we can allow these inconveniences in our daily lives to direct our prayers toward those who have died, our loved ones, those who are ill or facing financial hardships, and our actions toward strengthening the common good. Both at home and abroad the coronavirus poses a threat that knows no borders, as Christians, neither does our love and concern for our neighbors. Serving in Solidarity, Lauren Solidum President and CEO

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY Protecting Survivors

Information on abortion survivors has always been scant due to a lack of responsibility by the abortionist to the infant and limited reporting standards. In an effort to provide these vulnerable infants some protection, Congress passed the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act in 2002. This Act clarified that infants who survive an abortion are to be recognized as persons under the law. Regrettably the law did not include any standards for their care nor any process for legal enforcement of this law. In the years since passage, some of the states have passed varying levels of protections to make up for the lack of federal enforceability.

This past fall the Family Research Council, a Christian public policy ministry committed to defending religious liberty, the unborn and the family, released an analysis of the protections extended to these infants by each state. Currently 35 states require some born alive protections while 15 have no protections (sadly New York and Illinois removed their protections in 2019). Of the 35 states with some degree of protection only 16 of those states require all of the following: practitioners must exercise professional skill, care and diligence to preserve the life of an infant who survives an abortion; a health care requirement providing for hospitalization of the surviving infant and/or requiring the presence of a second physician during the abortion; and legal penalties for abortionists who do not comply. These requirements were included in the U.S. Senate Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. However, the bill was successfully filibustered by anti-life senators preventing it from receiving a final vote. It is truly appalling that even one senator, let alone more than 40 voted to prevent a final vote on the bill.
