STEWARDSHIP

“You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything…” – Exodus 20:4

How many “gods” do you put before God? “Idols” do not always take the shape of physical things, things we can touch and feel. Those are easy to recognize. Many times they take the form of things we cannot touch and are much harder to spot - pride, power, ego, comfort or health.

BLOOD DRIVE: WE NEED DONORS! BE A “LIFESAVER” Be a hero and give the gift of LIFE this LENT

March 9, 1:00PM-5:30PM St. John Rm.

A 2007 University of Minnesota study estimated that about one third of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood. However, the number of people who actually choose to donate is far fewer. Currently, the Kansas City-based Community Blood Center, which provides 70 area hospitals with 3,600 units of blood each week, describes its supply as critical; meaning the supply for hospitals and patients is stretched thin. This limits elective surgery and can postpone lifesaving treatments.

WEEKLY PRAYER

Church of the Ascension 3rd Sunday of Lent March 8, 2015

Third Sunday of Lent

As we are now well into Lent, we can take a look at what it means to turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. A good place to start would be the Ten Commandments. The reading from Exodus presents us with one of the first listings of the Commandments. In this passage, God explains some of the laws to show how serious they are. For the first one, God includes making images to be used for worship. Now you might jump to the conclusion that all the statues and crucifixes in our churches must be destroyed. Not so. In the days of Moses, people of other cultures made images of their gods and declared that the image was the god, and so should be worshipped. The LORD wanted his people to remember that God cannot be limited to an image or idea. That is still true today. Our images and statues are meant to help us pray to God, not to that work of art. In that sense, they are no worse than using a beautiful sunset or mountain scene to help you pray. On the other hand, some people give a superstitious meaning to religious articles. Burying a statue to help sell your house could be one example. If you want to ask for a favor from God, just ask Him. God is much more likely to listen to a sincere prayer than a superstitious action. The reason God gives for the first commandment is that he is a passionate God, who has chosen the Israelites to be his people. When he punishes sin, he allows the effect of our bad choices to hurt us and those around us. But when we repent and change our ways, his love is everlasting. God also emphasizes some commands by duplicating them. He tells us not to steal from others, and also not to plan to steal from our neighbor. The same with adultery: Planning it is just as bad as doing it. Taking his name in vain originally meant perjuring yourself after taking an oath to tell the truth. That is similar to the eighth commandment about false witness. Jesus simplified all these commands when he reminds us to love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself. Let’s remember that as we turn away from sin to serving God better during Lent.

MINISTRY NEWS (Continued) - RESPECT LIFE

REPEAL THE KANSAS

DEATH PENALTY!

House Bill (HB) 2129 to repeal the death penalty and replace it with life without parole was introduced by Representative Steven Becker of Buhler. Now our task is to keep up the call for repeal. Please contact your legislators and ask them to support HB 2129! It’s important for legislators to hear from you. The bill is in the House Judiciary Committee awaiting a hearing. The committee is chaired by Rep. John Barker. His email address is [email protected].

Call, write or email your legislators and Chairman Barker today, and tell them you support ending the Kansas death penalty! KEEP REMINDING THEM that death penalty cases cost three to four times more than non-death penalty cases. The high cost of the death penalty diverts important financial resources from other uses; and that imprisonment or life without possibility of parole is not only cheaper, but protects society.

To confirm your legislators’ contact information, just visit www.openstates.org. Type in your address to see contact information for your Senator and Representative.

If you have questions, need assistance, or want to share your legislator’s response, please contact KCADP at 785-235-2237 or [email protected].

Church of the Ascension 3rd Sunday of Lent March 8, 2015

DID YOU KNOW???

Ascension is a very active parish and almost every room is used for ministry meetings and various groups almost every afternoon and evening. You must reserve the room you are using in advance of your function. No one should assume they have a room anywhere in the facility unless you have submitted a space reservation form to the office and it has been approved, even if you have been meeting there in the past. Please check with Jan in the office to be sure you have the space reserved. There is also a list of who is using what room under the TV monitor in the Gathering Space and in the hospitality area and in the rooms in the lower level. The space reservation form is required for all the rooms in the Church building.

DO YOU HAVE ANY OLD EYEGLASSES OR SUNGLASSES

Save your old eyeglasses and sunglasses to be recycled throughout the world! Donation bin is located behind the bulletin boards in the Gathering Area.
