STEWARDSHIP

“Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time will come.” (Mark 13:33)

We all take things for granted. In particular, we take time for granted. We make our lives too busy. We plan our time, our days, weeks, months, even years in advance. Remember, our time on earth is a gift. None of us knows how long we will be here. Start today and begin thanking God for each and every day. Take time in silence, every day, and listen to how God is calling you right now to help build His kingdom on earth.

ST. MARY’S FOOD KITCHEN December 11, Before 8:30AM Drop Off by St. John Rm. Hallway Entrance

We need your help!! Due to the COVID 19 virus, St. Mary's Food Kitchen has discontinued their hot meal service for the homeless in our communities. In lieu of the hot dinner, sack lunches are being distributed to the hungry to take with them.

How can you help? We are looking for 15 individuals who are willing to commit to making 15 sack lunches. This will entail shopping for food items, preparing the sandwiches, assembling and delivering completed sack lunches to the hallway located outside of the St. John Room no later than 8:30am, December 11. A driver(s) will deliver the lunches to the food kitchen for further disbursement. To volunteer or for further information, please call Dee Winters at 913-681-6112.

Suggested lunch items are as follows: bread of any kind (except bread that is very dark or heavily seeded), ham, roast beef, chicken, turkey, lunch meat, cheeses, lunch size potato chips, fruit or pudding cups (please include a spoon and napkin), apples, oranges (no soft fruits that are easily crushed e.g. bananas), protein bars, packaged cookies or brownies, etc. Other creative ideas are certainly welcomed! Since paper tears easily, it is suggested that you use new one gallon Ziploc baggies to assemble these lunches. Please include a 12-16 ounce bottle of water (room temperature) in each bag. Please no peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, soft fruits or fresh vegetables. You are welcome to save your grocery receipts and present them to the parish office for reimbursement at a later date. Thank you so much and may God bless you!

STATIONS OF THE NATIVITY

MEDITATIONS ON THE INCARNATION OF CHRIST

“And the Word was made Flesh, and dwelt among us.”

December 11, 7:00PM

Church

Everyone is familiar with our Friday evening Stations of the Cross during Lent which help us understand Christ’s redemptive suffering and death on the cross. You are all invited to Ascension’s “first ever” STATIONS OF THE NATIVITY on Friday evening, December 11, at 7:00pm. Please mark your calendars!

This hour-long Advent service is for everyone—children, adults, families. From the first Station (the angel appears to Zechariah) to the fourteenth Station (The Holy Family journeys from Egypt back home to Bethlehem) the Gospel Scripture and reflective music tells the story of the Incarnation, helping us all better understand the wonder of God becoming human for our sake.

Our Pastor, Deacons, lectors, singers, musicians, and youth are all participating in the creation of this unique Advent Service. With your presence and participation, we can together affirm God’s great Love for us in the gift of His Son, Jesus.

LET US ALL PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD COME LET US WORSHIP

WEEKLY PRAYER

First Sunday of Advent Watch Out! In Advent, we celebrate our hope that the Lord might come more fully into our lives. The first reading from Isaiah voices the hope of sinners for a redeemer. As sinners, we too hope for forgiveness. Unlike Isaiah, we know that God has come to bring us back, when the Father sent his Son, Jesus, to save us. And God's power was manifest in the raising of Christ from the dead. Our faith in Jesus leads us to a new way of looking at the world. We can see what God is doing as well as remembering what God has done. The Gospel reminds us to look constantly for signs of God's work. Jesus says simply, "Watch!" Like the gatekeepers in Jesus' short parable, we need to keep our eyes open for him. Just as we expect people driving cars to turn off their cell phones and keep their eyes on the road, so we can stop looking for whatever makes us comfortable and watch for ways to love others as God loves us. When we only look out for ourselves, we may miss the signs of God's presence around us. Instead of looking at the difficulties of life as obstacles, we can watch for them as opportunities to stretch our faith, to rely on God, or to show God's love to a friend. The recent re-translation of the prayers of the Mass can be an opportunity to stretch our faith and our understanding of the Eucharist. The Corinthians were also watching for the Lord to come. Paul encourages them (and us) by his reminder that we "are not lacking in any spiritual gift" (1 Corinthians 1:7). The Holy Spirit gives us all we need to help each other prepare for the Lord's coming. They were thinking of Jesus as coming in glory. Though we don't see the full glory of the Lord, part of that glory is his presence in the sacraments. In them we celebrate not just the coming of the Lord, but his working in the world. He shares his life with us in baptism, gives us his Spirit in confirmation and himself in the Eucharist, heals us in reconciliation and the anointing of the sick, and calls us to make him present to others in holy orders and matrimony. You could almost say his second coming is taking place now. Watch for it.

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY An Advent Prayer for Life

God of Life, We rejoice in the promise of your coming. You have sent your Son, born in Bethlehem. He is the Prince of Peace, and The one in whose name all oppression shall cease. May we welcome his coming each day And prepare for his coming at the end of time. May we build a culture that welcomes him By welcoming every child, born and unborn. We pray through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

We plan on meeting 3 out of the 4 weeks at the small-group level, diving deep into Scripture and Prayer, while meeting once a month at the large-group level, and gathering for some serious community building fun.

We need your help! Did you know there are over 1,400 teens registered at Church of the Ascension? We need your help in reaching them. With your leadership and wisdom, we could breathe life and transform the young Church. Consider leading a small group of 5-7 teens this year.

HIGH SCHOOL SMALL GROUPS

Parents: If your high school teens are interested in participating at all this year with Church of the Ascension Youth, please head over to our website and sign them up for a small group. Go to www.kcascension.org and under the “Ministries” drop-down, click on the Youth Ministry tab. Sign-ups will be the first thing on our page!

OUR COMMON HOME MINISTRY Sustainable Christmas Ideas

Switch to LED Christmas lights, which use up to 80% less energy, and recycle any old light strings you are no longer using. (Accepted in December and January at the City of Overland Park Recycling Center, 11921 Hardy.)

Get out that ugly Christmas sweater! Turn down the heat in your home, as well as your water heater, and turn off lights and appliances when not in use.

Take time to get outdoors and enjoy God’s wondrous creation!

“Human-induced climate change is a scientific reality, and its decisive mitigation is a moral and religious imperative for humanity.” – Pope Francis

THE CATHOLIC GUIDE FOR END-OF-LIFE AND ESTABLISHING OF ADVANCE DIRECTIVES

The Ethics Council that serves Archbishop Naumann has produced a comprehensive resource for end-of-life planning titled “Catholic Guide For End-Of-Life and Establishing Of Advance Directives”. The purpose of the guide is to assist the faithful in making wise decisions in accordance with the teachings of our faith about complex treatments in grave illness or as life’s end approaches. It also includes two Appendices for a Durable Power of Attorney and an Advance Directive form. For a free digital copy of the Guide, visit www.archkck.org/prolife-end-of-life-care.

TEENS ENCOUNTER CHRIST January 16-18 Prairie Star Ranch, Williamsburg, KS.

We made the difficult decision not to take a delegation to March for Life in January in DC. But this opens up the possibility for teens to attend the Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) retreat. We will provide a small group retreat experience for high schoolers on January 16-18, 2021 at Prairie Star Ranch (PSR). We will be following social distancing and other safety procedures that allowed Camp Tekakwitha to happen. TEC is a 3-day retreat based on the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ. TEC involves 16 and older adolescents encountering Christ in a way that many have never experienced before. On a TEC retreat, you will have the opportunity to grow in your relationship with Christ through talks, group discussion, individual reflection, prayer, and sharing in the Sacraments. The weekend retreats are led by a team of youth, adults and a priest as spiritual director. To sign up go to: www.sunflowertec.org.

NOVEMBER IS NATIONAL ADOPTION AWARENESS MONTH

A special time to pray for and celebrate families that have grown through adoption. As people of faith, we know that adoption is a loving and beautiful way for a child to be welcomed into a family. We ask God to bless all of those whom adoption is a part of their life story – an adopted child or a child waiting for their forever home, parents placing their child for adoption, adoptive families, couples in waiting, and those with a loved one touched by adoption. This is also a time to raise awareness of the more than 110,000 children in foster care in the United States, waiting to be adopted. St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, please pray for us! Visit www.archkck.org/foster to learn more.
