MIKE BAKER – local mathematics tutorMike Baker’s logo (see right) is a clever col-lection of the letters of his surname. But dothe symbols actually have any meaning?‘Yes’, says Mike, ‘the formula represents anexponential series for biological growth and can forinstance, be used to calculate the return on an invest-ment of a certain sum of money each month; ‘e’ is a nat-ural constant, found in many biological and other situa-tions’. Ah, right, now we know.

ST PETER’S CHURCH – the minibus which was report-ed stolen in our last issue, was recovered at 4am inMount Pleasant Road. The driver’s seat had been set onfire which caused so much damage the vehicle hasbeen written off by the insurers. Father Alex says ‘It’s aterrible shame, a big tragedy. Lack of funds means thereare no plans to buy another bus’. Positive news is thatthe sandstone wall at the front of the church has beenrebuilt – at a cost of £2,000, mostly paid by the insurers.

ST MATTHEWS CHURCH – has recently relaunched itswebsite to a very high standard. It has many attractivefeatures, such as what’s on and when, maps, jokes, staffprofiles, answers to important questions; and somerecent sermons including one by Bishop Ken Barhamand one by Edward Towner. Stapley’ s Shoe ClubDear Sir, I’ve been trying to remember precisely where,in Bohemia Road, Stapley’s Shoe Shop was. I haveclear memories from the period during WWII and justafter, of going to Mr Stapley’s shop with my mother andtwo sisters. At the time we lived near The Ridge inLandsview Terrace, (between Grange Road and HillsideRoad, then just a muddy track) and we used to walk -over fields - to Old Road Road which had a locked gateacross it, then along ‘Tingle’s Dingle’ (the wooded glenwith the stream running under St Helen’s Road), andfinally across Alexandra Park to reach the prime shop-ping centre of Bohemia! I also remember that my moth-er paid in regular amounts to Stapley’s Shoe Club, thesums being entered onto a savings card which she car-ried with her and presented each time she made adeposit. When there was enough on the card, she couldbuy one of us a pair of shoes. Savings Clubs were quitenormal for those days. We also belonged to one run byHenson’s Stores at the Harrow, on The Ridge, small reg-ular payments being made so that we could afford theluxury of a chicken (!) for Christmas.

Priory Avenue resident, (name & address supplied).

Can anyone else remember Stapley’s, and where, pre-cisely, it was situated in Bohemia Road?

Voice for Ore V illage?Dear Sir, I am involved in the Ore Valley Action groupand the Speckled Wood group and I run a local lunchclub. I have seen a copy of the Bohemia Village Voice, and I’d like to say how lovely it is. I think Ore Villagewould benefit greatly from such a publication, but I’m notsure how we would go about it. Could you give us someguidelines?

Aubrey Ingleton, Ticehurst Close, Ore Village.

Thanks for the kind words Aubrey. The ‘Voice’ is writtenand put together by volunteers, but we pay for printing, distribution and office overheads. Our only source ofincome is advertising which just about allows us tobreak even. The main thing is to start. You can get a lotof news onto a single sheet of A4. It’s important to getthe first edition actually written and to run off somecopies. You can ask local shopkeepers to put some ontheir counters (the shops in Bohemia have been incred-ibly supportive). Once you’ve published a few editionsyou can then try for some advertising. It’s great fun anda real service to the community. Good luck! - ed.

Road safetyDear Sir, thank you for publishing Father Alex’s letter[Voice, issue 61, July 2008]. The Highways Authority(East Sussex County Council) is seriously underper-forming. To quote from the Audit Commission’s report ofOct 2007: “... Improvements to the transport

Gardeners’ Questions

Dave – I want to become famous and be on tv – howcan I do this? Anita Harris (Mr).

Dave writes: You could become proficient in one ormore of the performing arts, or perhaps a popularsport. If you do not become famous, then you couldshoot someone who has, give yourself up, andbecome the subject of news items and documentaries. You might also have programs made about you if youhave a spectacular disease of the face or some sort ofsyndrome that causes you to shout obscenities inchurch or at members of minority groups. It is, ofcourse, possible to become famous without doing any-thing notable; ask Tony Slattery, Gary Bushell or ChrisMoyles for guidance.

A charity-run sports and leisure centre has been given adazzling new makeover by offenders on probation. Up to50 offenders spent almost 1,000 hours painting, layingcarpet and clearing old furniture at the YMCA sportscentre in St Paul’s Road, Bohemia. Under theCommunity Payback scheme, teams of offenders sen-tenced to unpaid work by the courts are used to improvelocal facilities. Over the course of two weeks offenders

repainted the main hall and public gallery, stripped andvarnished the floor, laid new carpet in and decoratedthe youth wing and revamped two activity roomsupstairs. Karen Manning, chief executive officer ofHastings and Rother YMCA, said: “Initially I was scep-tical that they could carry out the work in the hall insuch a short space of time but they pulled it off, and toa very high standard. It was so good we asked themback to do all the other rooms at the centre. As a char-ity there is no way we could have afforded profession-als to carry out this work so this has been a great serv-ice to ourselves and our customers.”

Mark Burden, Sussex Probation Area’s CommunityPayback manager, said: “Some offenders worked 12hour days, fuelled by food laid on by the YMCA, to getthis project finished. The result is fantastic. As well ashelping a very worthwhile charity this project has vast-ly improved a facility used by thousands of Hastingsand St Leonards residents. Projects like this provideoffenders with invaluable skills and teamwork experi-

ence which is proven to reduce reoffending.” Last yearsome 2,500 offenders were sentenced to carry outunpaid work under the supervision of Sussex ProbationArea with more than 200,000 hours worked.Suggestions for Community Payback projects can beemailed to [email protected]

Communal bins coming to Bohemia? Are communal bins coming to Bohemia? Localcouncillor Andrew Cartwright says “The Councilwill shortly be writing to all residents of Bohemiaregarding the possible introduction of communalbins and more wheelie bins. The proposals areonly tentative at this stage. The Council has prom-ised to consult with residents and undertake aproperty survey. Current thinking is that a mixtureof wheelie bins (twin bins) and large communalbins might be appropriate for Bohemia dependingupon the circumstances of each street. Althoughthe Council’s approach is much more professionalthan their previous attempt to introduce wheeliebins – in 2007 – some mistakes are still beingmade. Please let me know your concerns. Mybelief is that, all things considered, this secondattempt is likely to prove much more successfulthan the first. It should lead to cleaner streets andincreased recycling without causing unnecessaryinconvenience to residents. As always, I will bewilling to assist residents with their concerns andtake action on their behalf where appropriate”.

In August Andrew visited Brighton to see their on-street communal bins, where they are used onlyfor refuse - not recyclables. “Hastings Borough Councilis considering using them for both refuse and recy-clables”, says Andrew. “Most of the bins there are oper-

ated by foot pedal only - which I felt might cause someresidents to overbalance, however, a new model with ahandle is being trialled”.

Letter triggers recall of nightmare ordeal

Dorothy Wood being interviewed by Paul Siegert of BBC South East Today. Camerman is Dave Painter. [Photo: Bill Third]

By Bill ThirdA letter from the Sussex branch of the National

Probation Service brought back terrifying memories toan 80 year old shopkeeper of an attempted robbery sixyears ago in which she was dowsed in petrol by herattacker who threatened to set her alight if she did notopen the till.

The attacker Duncan Snape is due for release inSeptember having served two thirds of his total 10 yearprison sentence. Although he will be required to stay outof an exclusion zone, roughly from the needle point atthe conjoining of Bohemia and London Roads to ChapelPark Road, the lady who was attacked, Dorothy Wood ofWood’s newsagents Bohemia Road, feels that theexclusion zone will allow Snape to get quite close to her.

“He is excluded from Newgate Road, but he could prac-tically wave to me from the end of Amherst Road if hechose to,” she says.

Recalling the build-up to the ordeal that brought herclose to death, Dorothy said,”He came into the shopearly one morning in November 2001, just lookedaround and then left. Then he came in the next morningand I asked if I could help him. He said ‘no I’m only look-ing around.’ Then he came back on the morning ofNovember 6th. carrying a petrol can. I repeated myquestion of the day before.”

He replied “Get back behind the counter woman,” andbowled me over. He then poured the petrol over me and

produced a lighter, “Open the till or I’ll set you on fire,”he said. I refused, then a car door slammed loudly rightoutside the shop which gave him a fright and fortunate-ly for me he ran off, although he did manage to snatchabout £100”. The lady who slammed the car door sawSnape making his escape up Newgate Road where heattempted to get into a car, and phoned the police on hermobile. Fortunately there was a patrol car nearby and hewas arrested in Aldborough Road with the petrol canunder his arm.

When Dorothy received the letter from the ProbationService in Shepherd Street, her first reaction was to sayto her son Keith, “Right, that’s it. We are shutting upshop.” But despite a few sleepless nights she decidedshe wasn’t going to be frightened off, displaying thesame tenacity and bulldog spirit which she has shownafter attempted robberies in the past.

But questions remain: will pictures of Snape be postedin the exclusion zone, so that he can be identified if hedoes come into the area? And can it be extended to helpMrs Wood sleep a little easier in her bed at nights?

According to the probation service, it would be hard toget permission to use Snape’s picture – presumably toprotect his privacy! And in any case there were so manypeople on exclusion orders that there would be postersall over the place. However, they would look into extend-ing the exclusion zone so that Snape would not havesight of the shop.

Horntye Park ‘delighted’ with auction result sKevin Miller, manager of HorntyePark Sports Complex said hewas “delighted” with July’s crick-et memorabilia auction results.“We made considerably morethan we’d been hoping for. It willgive us working capital until theland deal goes through”. Beforethe sale, Kevin said he’d bepleased with £30,000. It isbelieved that the total sumraised was about £63,000, so heshould be very pleased.

This collection of cricket books, photographs and otherephemera was sold on behalf ofthe Horntye Park Sports Cluband the majority of the itemsoriginated from the old HastingsCricket Ground at PrioryMeadow. The auction was con-ducted by Knights SportingAuctions at Leicester onSaturday July 19th

Some lots produced pleasantsurprises, for example, an origi-

nal 1895 sepia photograph of WG Grace in batting pose andsigned in black ink by Grace, fetched £2000 (the auctioneer'sestimate had been £500 to£800). Another excellent resultwas for an original official score-book for the 1880-1881 seasonswhich fetched £2,100 (auction-eer's estimate: no more than£250). An early handbill for an1886 match between Hastings &St Leonards Cricket Club v TheParsees (Bombay, India) wasknocked down for £1,200 (esti-mate £250-£350). This interest-ing item listed the names of thetwo teams and at the bottom, itreads 'Admission 6d, Carriages2s. 6d, Bath Chairs 1s'.

Not all lots found buyers howev-er – for instance, a black andwhite photograph of theHastings team which playedBarclays Bank in 1937, estimat-ed to fetch at least £40,remained unsold.

A total of 190 lots of Horntye Park’s cricket mem-orabilia went under the hammer in July. The oneabove , (lot 5), an 1886 handbill, fetched £1,200.

Maurice and Annette Dunford have been runningBohemia Lighting Centre at 71 Bohemia Road for thirty-five years. Maurice was working as an electrician at thetime, and the couple decided it would be a good idea tobuy the premises as a base. Initially they bought bothno. 71 and no. 65, both formerly Roger’s Haberdashery,as empty shops.

“It was a challenge working in the shop when we firststarted,” said Annette, “as I had two small boys to look

after as well! The boys used to go to St. Paul’s School. Now they are 37 and 35!”

In 1991, Maurice started Security First, and ran thisfrom no. 65. In 2006 the Dunfords decided to sell no. 65and run both businesses from no. 71. 65 is now occu-pied by Cheap and Cheerful. These days Maurice con-centrates on the security side, while Annette runs theshop. She said, “It’s more difficult now than it was whenwe started, because of parking and the internet. It’sgoing to be even harder for us if another supermarketcomes to Silverhill.”

She continued, I like meeting people, and we havesome lovely customers who stop for a chat. I’d miss thatif I didn’t run the shop. It’s a personal service. We try togive a friendly face.”

At Easter 2007 the couple had to cope with a flood, when they arrived one morning to find water all over thefloor. It was coming from a cracked sewage pipe inNewgate Road. After the pipe was repaired, the shophad to be substantially refurbished and everything con-taminated had to be removed. Even the walls werereplastered, and new counters put in, as well as a newcarpet laid.

But after all the remedial work and the extensive dam-age that had been done, it was back to business asusual. Maurice and Annette are obviously survivors!

Under 5s playgroup loses it s kind, caring HelenHelen Dempsey, supervisor at thePark Road UnderFives Playgroup, retired on 23rdJuly after 18years service.Helen, of Clar-ence Road, wastrained to teachchildren, butnever actuallyworked as ateacher becausewhen she moveddown from south-

east London to Hastings in 1971, there were no teach-ing jobs available locally. She started work at Park Roadplaygroup in 1990, but had already been associated withit for some years, as her own children went there.

“My daughter was one of the first group when it initiallyopened in March 1986, so I’ve been part of the play-group as a parent, then as an ordinary session worker, then as deputy supervisor, and finally as supervisor.”

Helen’s friend and colleague Sally Crockford, who hasworked under her for five years, said, “Helen is a reallykind, caring, considerate person, a great boss and an

even greater friend. She’s given a lot to children roundthis area.” At Helen’s last session with the playgroup, she received gifts from the committee, the staff, and theparents. Asked about her favourite memories, Helensaid, “What stand out are the annual visits, because thechildren enjoy them so much. Every year we go toplaces like the Seven Sisters Sheep Farm, the RareBreeds Centre near Ashford, Drusilla’s Zoo or the SeaLife Centre. We’ve also taken the children to visit theFire Station. There’s also the Christmas parties and thesummer parties, with a magician.”

Looking back, Helen speaks of the changes since theplaygroup’s early days. “There are about 45 childrenthere now. There used to be over 90 at one time, butthere are now lots more private nurseries. We at ParkRoad are a non-profit-making organisation, a real com-munity group. We offer a service for people who can’tafford a private nursery. When we first started, we didn’thave OFSTED. Now we’re ofsteded and have to followthe early years system. It’s much more professional: weall have training courses, and there are more qualifiedstaff. It’s much more hard work, but I think it’s a betterlevel of care. The parents have higher expectations.”

Helen will be continuing in her duties as a lollipop ladyat St Paul’s School. “I’ll see quite a few of the little chil-dren, because some are going to St. Paul’s inSeptember of course, so I’ll still keep in touch.”

Clifford and Sue Pearce took over the former BohemiaMotors garage in Upper Park Road on 4th August. Thecouple have decided to make a clean sweep by givingthe business a new name, “Clifford’s Automobiles”.Immediately they got the keys, they set about redeco-rating and getting staff. They already have a mechanic, and are now getting one or two apprentice mechanics.

Initially they had intended to spend a week or two get-ting everything prepared, but, said Sue, speaking threedays after they took over, “It’s all taking off already. Wewanted to get it all set for the opening, but people whohave just walked past have asked if we can do things”As she spoke, a customer was having his MOT done onhis vehicle and several other cars were awaiting atten-tion. She said that a lot of passers-by had made encour-aging comments when they saw new developmentsgoing on, and “the people from Hillcrest Garage havecome down and wished us well.”

At present, Clifford is continuing to commute to hispresent job as a baker at the family business inBookham, Surrey. He is planning to give that up and runthe garage when business has built up.

“I’ve been in business since I was twenty-four, and I’mnow sixty-six, so business isn’t new to me,” he said. “Iused to sell cars in North Road, but I closed downbecause the Council wouldn’t give me planning permis-

sion. I wanted to buy a garage, so I looked in the FridayAd and found this. I just fancied doing it, I’m just inter-ested in cars.”

Warning: this is what a black henna t attoo can doParent Vanessa Gent, of S t Peter ’s Road writes:

One of my sons decided to try a temporary henna tattoo, which was advertised as being perfectly safe and aller-gy-free. He came home with a black Chinese pictogramof the word “gamble” on the side of his neck. I do not liketattoos but thought there would be no repercussionsfrom something which would quickly fade.

A couple of weeks later, my son said he was havingproblems with the tattoo - an allergic reaction resulting inintense itching and soreness. By the next day he wasfeeling feverish and had developed huge pus-filled blis-ters on the site of the tattoo and all round the area, plusa generalised rash around his face, eyes and trunk. Hewent straight to A & E, and after being prescribed cover-ing antibiotics he was told to see his own doctor, atWarrior Square, immediately. He prescribed furtherantibiotics and antihistamines and after a few days theitching is starting to subside and the blisters have dis-charged their poison; at their worst it required 11 differ-ent dressings overnight to contain the fluid.

He is so depressed and self-conscious as a result of hisrecent experience that it is impossible to persuade himto leave the house. I am very concerned not only for myson but for anyone who thinks these things are safe. They want to look like their friends, be fashionable andto look different. I can’t emphasise strongly enough how

dangerous they are, and so far I can only speak of theshort-term effects. The photograph, of course, cannotindicate just how painful the sores have been and wastaken when they were starting to subside. Long-termscarring is likely and my son may have a life-long sensi-tivity to any substance containing PPD, the active chem-ical in the dye which is found in a plethora of haircolourants, sunscreens and cosmetics; he may find it isimpossible for him to expose his skin to sunlight and atany time in the future when his immune system is com-promised, such as by the herpes virus, the allergy couldbe reactivated, with effects which worsen over time.

infrastructure are limited.Funding decisions have reduced

standards and improvements to the network are slow. ...The rate of deterioration of the road network exceedsthe maintenance investment of the Council by £1 millionper year. The Council estimates the current gap to beabout £5 million had funding kept pace with inflation ...Overall the transport system is not providing an effectivenetwork”. Indeed, many of the fairly routine works on theroads and pavements currently in progress in StLeonards are being paid for mainly by the Governmentas part of the regeneration of the local economy.

Hastings Borough Council acts only as agent to thelocal Highways Authority. Unfortunately, the HighwaysDepartment at the Borough Council has very limitedresources and it is clear that they are understaffed. Mybelief is that most local residents would prefer our localroads and pavements to be managed by HastingsBorough Council. East Sussex County Council is tooremote to be sensitive to public opinion. I have written tothe Director of Environmental Services at the BoroughCouncil urging him to raise the issue of the need formore staff in the Highways Department at both Boroughand County levels. However, my understanding is thatthe County Council is reluctant to give further control orfunding to the Borough.

At present I am working with several groups of localresidents to improve our roads. Local residents andtraders from the Bohemia Area Association are veryactive, and there are new groups of active residents inTower Road West and Alexandra Road - both cam-paigning for better highways management. New groupsare likely to be formed soon in Dane Road, ChurchRoad and elsewhere. Please get in touch if you wouldlike to be part of a campaign. Although it can take yearsto bring about real change it is well worth the effort ofpersevering. Ultimately, the whole community will bene-fit from improved road safety.

Andrew Cartwright, Labour Councillor, Gensing Ward.

Wingfield’ s TowerDear Sir, I note in your last issue the date given for thedemolition of Wingfield’s Tower in Lower South Road is1974. I enclose a photocopy of a press cutting of an arti-cle, ‘Tower is to topple’, from the Hastings & St LeonardsObserver of 17th March 1973 which clearly shows thetower enveloped in scaffold and ready for demolition. Itherefore think the correct year is 1973.

Edward Preston, Bohemia Road.

Thank you, Edward. Apologies for the discrepancy - ed.

Village GreenDear Sir, what’s all this rubbish about a village green?[issue 62, August 2008, letter from Kat Lee-Ryan,organiser of Bohemia Village Fayre] To have a villagegreen, you must have a village, not a figment of some-one’s imagination, although I sympathise and supporttheir view of no building on the area [green just north of

Summerfiels’ Sports Centre]. As for the Oval, if the writerhad done their homework, they would have discoveredthat the Oval was opened and given to the children ofthe Borough by the then Prince of Wales in the early1920s. If they really want a usable green area, well, inthe Bohemia area why don’t they support those resi-dents fighting to get Newgate Field – if they know whereit is – back to its former glory, a beautiful wooded picnicand play area, not the stinging nettle-covered area it istoday. If I remember rightly in an earlier issue of theVoice, Mr Humphries [Voice editor] said somethingabout campaigning for this.

Vic Chalcraft, Aldborough Road.

The ESCC website states “If your community has anarea that is used for sport or other pastimes, then regis-tering it as a village green may ensure that it stays thatway. A ‘village green’ is legally defined as any areawhere people in the community have enjoyed legitimatesports or pastimes for a number of years. Such activitiesinclude things like cricket matches, blackberry picking, dog walking and fetes”. We will be doing a piece onNewgate Fields before the end of this year – that’s apromise – ed.

Burn down all their houses?Dear Sir, I refer to the letter from ‘St Peter’s Road resi-dents’ about dog mess [issue 61, July 2008]. Yes, we dohave a dog excrement problem, sadly caused by aminority of uncouth dog owners, who really should notbe allowed to keep dogs. As for the morons who suggestburning down the houses of those who allow their dogsto foul the pavements, would their efforts not be put tobetter use burning down the houses of people who con-tinually cycle on our pavements, without considerationfor elderly people or young people, burning down thehouses of people who openly deal lethal drugs in ourarea, burning down the houses of people who smashbottles in the streets and those that put the wrong kindof rubbish in their bins? Leave respectable dog ownersalone and start to address the real problems.
