Sakuji Tanaka (Kyoko)

Rotary Club of Yashio, Saitama, Japan

RI Director Past Trustee of The Rotary Foundation Chair, 2009 Birmingham Convention Committee RI Director Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator District Governor Member of Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force, the Permanent Fund Committee for Japan, and the Future Vision Committee.

Sakuji Tanaka is a member of the Rotary Club of Yashio, Saitama, Japan. Tanaka said he would like to see Rotary "continue its vital work as the force to improve our communities." To do this work, Rotary needs active, involved clubs, he added. "We are fortunate to have our revised RI Strategic Plan to help build strong clubs that are vibrant, action-oriented, and relevant in the changing world." For 32 years, Tanaka was President of Tanaka Company Ltd., a wholesale firm that went public in 1995 and later merged with other leading wholesalers in Japan. Currently, he serves as Vice-president of the Yashio City Chamber of Commerce and Adviser to Arata Co. Ltd., an animal feed and pet food wholesaler. He also chaired the National Household Papers Distribution Association of Japan for eight years. Tanaka studied business at Nihon Management Daigakuin and Tokyo Management Daigakuin. A past Trustee of The Rotary Foundation, Tanaka chaired the 2009 Birmingham Convention Committee. His other service to Rotary includes RI director, Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator, District Gvernor, and member of the Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force, the Permanent Fund Committee for Japan, and the Future Vision Committee. Tanaka established an endowed Rotary Peace Fellowship, and he and his wife, Kyoko, are Paul Harris Fellows, Benefactors of the Permanent Fund, and Major Donors. He is a recipient of RI’s Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award. Tanaka said that eradicating polio will "fulfill the promise we made to children in the world" and that "there is no doubt in my mind that the day of this success will be realized in the near future."

Tanaka and Kyoko have three children and five grandchildren.

The Barossa Valley welcomes all Rotarians Partners and Friends

Marilyn and I and the Members of the Rotary Club of Marion welcome you all to the 2013 conference being held in the Barossa Arts and Convention Centre Tanunda.

The conference committee, chaired by Past President Richard Campbell, have worked hard to bring you interesting and informative speakers for your total enjoyment.

This conference has been structured to ensure you have ample opportunity for FUN and fellowship, we trust you have extended your stay to include ANZAC day in your time in the Barossa, taking advantage of this exciting wine region and what it has to offer!

The Barossa Valley is a treat that should be savoured slowly, like the famous and fabulous wines that are produced in this region. Despite the areas compact size, the gentle hills and bountiful 25km long valley produces huge amounts of luscious and fruity wines.

Sniff and Quaff and savour the Barossa Valleys fruity delights.

Welcome from the Host Club President

On behalf of my fellow Marion Rotary active and Hon Members and partners, I welcome you to the District 9520 Conference for 2012-2013.

What Rotary Marion (currently) lacks in member numbers we make up for in energy, FUN and fellowship, which we are sure you will witness during your time at this Conference. During January 2013 we held our 2000

th

meeting, having been admitted to Rotary International in 1970.

Our Charter President Donald Cant continues to serve Rotary as an active and highly valued Club member.

Rotary Marion has proudly hosted a District Conference only once prior to this year, way back 30 years ago when Bernie Jones was our District Governor. We treasure the fact that Bernie’s widow, Barb Jones, remains a Hon Member of the Rotary Marion family.

The Conference organising committee, under the astute leadership of Rtn Richard Campbell, has worked diligently to deliver a “Journey from Vine to Wine” filled with FUN, fellowship,

good food and of course great wine! Whether you are a Rotarian, a member of the Family of Rotary, or a guest, this Conference offers a memorable experience and an opportunity to broaden your appreciation of Rotary's Local, National and Global impact whilst strengthening your commitment to service.

Please spend some time visiting the Rotary Showcase where you will find assembled over 25 enthusiastic exhibitors offering you a unique opportunity to review service projects, share information and stock up on Rotary and partner groups’ merchandise.

RI President’s Representative PRID Stuart Heal and Adrienne

Rotary Club of Cromwell, Central Otago, New Zealand (D.9980)

RI Director 2010-12

Stuart has enjoyed a successful and varied business career. He was CEO of New Zealand’s largest agricultural supply co-operative for 20 years and he is now self employed as a business mentor and a director of a number of companies across many different sectors including manufacturing, wine, health, power generation, retail and forestry.

Stuart came into Rotary following selection as a team member on Group Study Exchange. He went to Nigeria in 1987 as a member of the team from District 9980. Much earlier, in 1971, he won a Rotary Youth Leadership award and attended District 9920 RYLA that year. He subsequently joined the Dunedin Rotary Club in 1987, was club President in 1994/95 and District Governor in District 9980 in 1999/2000. He was involved with the GSE program as District chair in 1991-1993 and has been a member of the Management Committee for RDU for the past five years. He has also been a training leader at International Assembly twice (2003, 2004) and remains a member of his District’s training team.

In 2005 he was awarded the Citation of Meritorious Service from the Rotary Foundation following three years as Foundation chair for the District.

Stuart and his wife Adrienne have hosted five Rotary Youth Exchange students and are very supportive of Rotary Youth programmes. Adrienne was, until 2009, a teacher providing support for children aged 11 to 15 with learning and behavioural needs. Adrienne is also a Rotarian, was Cromwell club President in 2008/09, and is currently a member of the District GSE committee.

They have two sons and a daughter have recently welcomed two daughters-in-law into the fold. Their leisure time is spent with family and, in the finest New Zealand traditions, enjoying good food, wine, gardening, travel, rugby and cricket.

District Governor Roy Armstrong and Marilyn

Rotary Club of Marion Roy joined the Rotary Club of Marion after returning from secondment in Cardiff, Wales, in 1989. He became the President of the Rotary Club of Marion in 1994 and again in 2004 and was awarded a Paul Harris fellow in 2006. During 2008/09 Roy was the District Trainer for D9520 and has been an Assistant Governor for Group 6. Whilst overseas, in New Zealand and the UK, Roy worked as Managing Director for a South Australian public company progressing to Company Director and Board Member, when he returned to Adelaide. Roy is currently a Director of two private companies, one being an industrial automation and custom software provider, and the other engineering and design of ‘Rugged Computers’ for the Defence Industry. Roy spends many leisure hours playing golf and enjoys being a member of the Triumph Car Club. Marilyn is involved in Singing with a local Choir (Hills Choral Society) where she has been an active member for twenty years. She is also very active in acrylic painting and many a picture adorns the walls of their home and selected art shows. Marilyn is a member of Holdfast Marion Inner Wheel, and is a past District Chairman A70 Region. Roy and Marilyn have three adult children Darren, Trudi and Regan, and are proud grandparents of nine grandchildren.

District Governor Elect Wendy Gaborit and John Jury

Rotary Club of Mobilong

Wendy joined the Rotary Club of Mobilong in District 9520 in 2005. She was President in 2006/07. Her positions at club level have

been focussed in the areas of community development, major project initiatives, and the coordination of 2 GSE in-bound teams and 2 Long Term Youth Exchangees. She is a Paul Harris Fellow, Centurion and Faculty Member of the Rotary Leadership Institute. She has served on a District Committee as Chair of RYLA 2007-11, is the Coordinator for Club Visioning and Assistant Governor for Group 3.

Wendy is the Regional Manager for Southern Adelaide Region, Housing SA, the State public housing authority. She is active in her community, holding positions on Local Government committees and working on projects that build community capacity and others which deliver public art. She sits on two Zone Emergency Management committees and is responsible for the implementation and coordination of “Recovery” programs following a natural disaster. Wendy commenced her work life in Adelaide as a social group worker with the then Social Welfare and Aboriginal Services department. She has worked in the areas of social planning, community development, children’s services, and since 1992 has been with Housing SA in a number of managerial roles including regional services, marketing, contract management and real estate sales.

Wendy is married to John (Jury), a grazier with holdings in the eastern Mount Lofty Ranges. Together they have initiated a Land Care Group, operated an “international class” farm stay program and heritage listed unique rare and endangered flora. They have a melded family of five children and 3 grandchildren. Wendy’s passion is with community which sometimes leaves her time poor to fit in the others of travelling, theatre and fine arts. She enjoys fine food, cooking, walking, reading a crime thriller and time spent with family and friends.

District Governor Nominee Jerry Casburn and Briony Rotary Club of Unley

Following relocation and transfer from the UK to Australia, Jerry joined the Rotary Club of St. Ives in New South Wales in 1991, which he served in a number of Board positions. He was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow and Sapphire pin during his time with the club. In 2005 he relocated to Adelaide and transferred to the Rotary Club of Unley. He became President of the club in 2008/09 and continued in that office in 2009/10. A second Sapphire pin was awarded in 2012.

During 2010/11 and 2011/12 Jerry was Assistant Governor in District 9520 for the Group 5 clubs. In 2012/13 he served as both District Secretary and District Governor Nominee. For six years Jerry was the owner/operator of a supermarket in Glenelg, South Australia. Prior to this he worked in the finance industry serving as Senior Vice President for American Express, Chief Executive Officer for a bank consortium which managed the BPAY operations and lastly as Chief Operating Officer with EDS which operated the Lockley Mortgage Centre.

Jerry, having left retail, is building a career as a consultant manager and his leisure time, when not involved in Rotary, is spent enjoying his family and trying to stay one step ahead with infrequent attendance at the gym.

Briony is partner in a children’s surf store in Glenelg and has been in the retail industry for most of her career. She is an athlete, competing in hammer throw, discus, javelin and shot put as part of the Masters programme and in her sporting years as a teenager she was in the top six javelin throwers in Australia. Briony is a keen member of the Rotary Club of Unley and currently serves as Community Service chair and works with the Thrift Shop Committee to revamp the shop and sales strategy to maximise profits.

As an empty nest/Brady bunch family, there are six children, two girls and three boys, Jacqui, Catherine, Peter, Matthew, and lastly Duncan and Andrew who live in the UK. They are also proud grandparents of seven.

Guest Speakers Desmond Kelly and Jenny

Rotary Club of Marion

Des was born in Dublin, Ireland, and immigrated to South Australia with his family in 1966 where he undertook an apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery. In 1978 Des started his own company trading as Winkle Shopfitters. Jenny immigrated to Australia with her family from Holland in 1957 and followed a career path in nursing, specialising in infant care. In 1990 Jenny joined the growing family business. Des and Jenny were married in 1973 and have three children, Josh 36, Hamish 33 and Harmony 32 years of age. They also have 7 very special grand children. Des joined the Rotary club of Marion in 1990 and served as President in 1999-2000. Jenny joined the Rotary Club of Marion in 2004 and was elected President of the club in 2010-11. They have hosted and enjoyed many International Exchange students. In 2009 Des and Jenny left their business in the capable hands of their three children, purchased 2 motor bikes and embarked on a ride from the most southerly city in the world, Ushuaia Argentina to the North coast of Alaska’s Prudoe Bay. Their travels brought them into contact with some interesting and amazing people. Adventure traveling is Des and Jenny’s way of getting the most out of their world and experiencing other cultures and exotic places.

Guest Speaker Ashleigh Moore, OAM

Cancer Voices SA

Ashleigh Moore has a truly remarkable story. He's the founding Chairman of Cancer Voices SA, an organisation that aims to improve and represent the views and interests of cancer patients, their carers, and supporters. Ashleigh is a 3 time cancer survivor and was awarded the Order of the Medal of Australia for his services to the community through Cancer Voices SA. Advisory positions include the SA Health Ministers Complaints Advisory Council, Cancer Australia and the SA Cancer Clinical Network. Professional business background: A 5-year term as Director of Safework SA; MBA and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management; Tertiary qualifications in science, safety, quality, management and business. A speaker at the inaugural LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit in Ireland and the Go Public Cancer Leadership Forum in Canada, Ashleigh has a powerful message on how people can overcome the odds. Ashleigh is a keen cyclist and heads up the Cancer Voices SA Cycling team.

Guest Speaker Nola Sharp

Inner Wheel

“Do I have a recipe for you ... from bake to cake”

Nola is the wife of a Rotarian, Les Sharp, mother of three and Nana to five gorgeous grandchildren. She lives in a rural community in Wandin, Victoria, 60 kilometres east of Melbourne. She has been a passionate member of Inner Wheel for 17 years; and had the honour of being the Inner Wheel Club of Wandin’s Charter President, Inner Wheel District 61 Chairman, Inner Wheel Australia Council member and Inner Wheel Australia Head Teller. As a conference speaker Nola was awarded the “Outstanding Presentation Trophy” at the Rotary 9810 Conference in Hobart and regularly promotes Inner Wheel at every opportunity throughout Australia. Her presentation is unique, and designed to inform and entertain. Hobbies include being hostess at dinner parties in her home, gardening volunteer work within her local community and as a member of Toastmaster International enjoys and finds personal rewards in conducting Public Speaking Youth Leadership programs within Primary and Secondary Schools each year.

Guest Speaker Terry Daley

Rotary Club of Rockhampton, D.9570

Terry was born at Atherton and grew up on a dairy farm at Millaa Millaa on the Atherton Tableland in North Queensland. He played rugby league for Millaa Millaa and captained the Malanda High School team, winning the premiership three years in a row.

After his apprenticeship was completed in Cairns Terry worked for many years in mustering camps in Western Queensland. He married Debbie in 1976 and went back to milking cows for a few years before moving to Moura to drive dozers stick raking and pulling scrub. In 1980 the family moved to Croydon Station, Central Queensland, owned by The Bundaberg Sugar Company (Bundy Rum). Whilst there helicopter mustering was pioneered. In 1988 when Croydon was sold the family moved to Rockhampton and set up Direct Pest & Weed Control in 1991. The company started franchising in 1993 and grew to be the fourth largest pest and weed control company in Queensland. The parent company was sold in 2003 to Campbell Bros. and he retired at age 48.

Terry was President of the Rotary Club of Rockhampton North in 2002-03, District 9570 Governor in 2008-09. He has been the RAWCS Chair for District 9570 for the last three Rotary years and is currently the Project & Project Volunteer Coordinator for RAWCS Northern Region. Terry is also the Australian National Chairman for RYPEN.

In the past two years District 9570 has gone from no RAWCS registered projects and no project volunteers to today having 14 registered projects in 8 countries with some 130 plus project volunteers travelling overseas each year. The last Rotary year saw the District contribute a total value of some 6.2 million Australian dollars towards the program.

Terry & Debbie have two daughters; Deslee lives in Longreach and is the President of the Longreach Rotary Club and Cindy who lives in Canberra.

David Rusk

Rotary Club of Brownhill Creek

“ Small Voices, Big Dreams”

David has been a member of Rotary for 15 years and has been President of two clubs – Blackwood and Brownhill Creek.

A retired School Principal, David has a deep concern for children who suffer educational disadvantage. He believes his core purpose as a Rotarian is to create life-changing opportunities for young people. In response to those needs, he has initiated a number of programs for students, teachers and principals in Nepal over the past ten years. David has coordinated a Rotary educational scholarship program, where 4 Nepali teachers observed in South Australian schools for 10 weeks and improved their English. He has also established a sponsorship program for disadvantaged students at Blue Sky Public School in Kathmandu, with 70 students currently being sponsored by family, friends, Rotarians, Rotary clubs and school groups.

David and his wife Vivien have sponsored Sanjeev Dahal, a Nepali Rotaractor, through his university studies in Nepal and India. Sanjeev, now a lecturer in Social Work in Kathmandu, was a member of the Group 3292 GSE Team to Washington State, USA in 2012.

David’s most recent project is raising funds to build a school next to a Nepal Orphanage for Dalit (Untouchable) children in Kathmandu. He has made five visits to Nepal, primarily to strengthen friendships with Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Dillibazar and to meet with the scholarship teachers and the sponsored children and their families. During his visits he organises training and development workshops for teachers and principals.

Sharing his passion for Nepal and its people, David has organised four Friendship Exchange visits – two Rotary incoming, one Rotary outgoing and one with Pulteney Grammar School.

Guest Speaker Alan Hannaford

Cattle – Horse Breeder and Educator

Alan Hannaford, the fair-dinkum Aussie is married to Kathy and they have two daughters, Natalie and Tanya. He is a unique blend of champion horseman, cattleman/drover, educator, story-teller and an engaging speaker.

Alan’s life experiences include growing up and spending his life on a cattle farm as well as owning and operating a retail store for over twenty years.

He has been an Officer in the Australian Army, a pilot and a Mediator.

He is an outstanding horseman who specialises in the Australian sport of Campdrafting. Alan has been invited to the “World Campdrafting Championship” at Sydney Roy Show on either occasions. He has been invited as the Campdraft Educator at the 2008 and 2011 Equitana Equine Spectactular. He demonstrated and lectured to 4500 spell-bound spectators at one sitting the great hall at Equitana 2008.

As a cattleman and drover Alan has spent time with horses, cattle, dogs, people, droving large mobs of cattle along the stock routes of Australia’s eastern States.

Alan’s stories are based on real life experiences and the lessons learned are beneficial to most people in their business and personal lives. He believes that in today’s high technology world, we are losing the long proven ‘age old’ essentials of manners and plain old courtesy.

The authentic Australian story-teller is what you get with Alan. His style is ‘no holds barred’, humorous, interesting and informative.

GSE TEAM FROM D3470, TAIWAN 2012-2013

GSE Team Leader: Su-Chen Yang (Betty) RC of Tainan Phoenix High School English Teacher Betty has been a Rotarian for 14 years; President of her Club in 2007-08; District Chair of RYE 2009-12. Now works as correspondent for South America for Rotary Youth Exchange Multi-Taiwan and holds position of District Chair of New Generation 2012-13.

I-Na Chen Sponsored by RC of Annan Social Work Supervisor I-Na has been a Social Worker for more than 18 years, devoting herself to handicapped, social assistance, women protective service at the Bureau of Social Affair (Tainan City Government) and Modern Women’s Foundation, and works to help battered women and children.

Tracy Chang PhD Student, National Cheng Kung University Tracy is a PhD student in Architecture Department of National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. Her research field is about sustainable environment and green building. She has participated in several green building management projects in the past two years with splendid achievement. She is also a volunteer English guide for a new green building on campus to contribute to efforts in environmental education in Taiwan.

Jung Tang Lee (Pitt) RC of Nanke Occupation: Lawyer Pitt is a practicing Lawyer in Kaohsiung, Southern Taiwan and describes himself as an extroverted, dynamic, optimistic and passionate person. He is interested in all natural things, such as animals, landscape and history and looks forward to visiting Australia’s Courts, Law firms and the South Australian Museum.

Yu-Chen Oh (Jamie) RC of Magong Occupation: Research Assistant Jamie works as a Research Assistant in the Department of Architecture of National Cheng Kung University and is a PhD candidate. She dedicated herself to building an interior ventilation evaluation system of Taiwan and her aim is to

cool the air via natural ventilation to reduce the amount of air-conditioner used in order to lower the production of CO2.

Guest Speaker Carole Whitelock

Commentator and Journalist

Carole Whitelock was born in London and grew up as an avid radio listener. Her early career included working in the travel business, a UK MP's constituency office and later, working as a civilian for the Army Intelligence Corps in Singapore. This was in the 1960's when the cold war was still very real and all kinds of skullduggery was happening. After Singapore, England seemed very cold and grey, so Carole and then husband decided on Australia. Relatives in Adelaide offered a warm welcome and the love affair with Adelaide was instant and lasting. Carole joined the ABC in 1980 after a friend mentioned that they were auditioning for presenters. The auditioning process then was complicated and lengthy. Carole has done almost every radio shift, apart from midnight to dawn. (Just too much !) In 32 years at the microphone there were many memorable moments, including introducing the Dalai Lama at the Entertainment Centre, broadcasting from a hot air balloon over the Barossa Valley, and almost being seduced by a dolphin in the Port River. Carole is now in "holidayland” (retirement is such a negative word) and thus far has enjoyed visiting the Blue Mountains and cruising around New Zealand with husband Ken. She writes a column for "Boomer" magazine, which arrives with your Advertiser and also undertakes speaking engagements and acts as MC at numerous events. She enthusiastically recommends "holidayland" to everyone.

The Wine Fraternity, Barons of Barossa, was founded in 1974 by a group of influential Barossa winemakers. The Fraternity was modelled on similar organisations which exist in Europe whose aims are to promote wines of the regions and also carry out philanthropic and charitable works. The colourful ceremonial regalia worn by the Barons of Barossa reflect these traditional origins and is a reminder of the links with European migration and settlement which led to the foundation of the Barossa. The objectives of the Barons of Barossa remains unchanged from its foundation which is to

promote the Barossa winemaking and viticulture industries. The constitution also sets down a number of aims including the preservation of the Barossa’s heritage and traditions and for the promotion of the arts, gastronomy and events. Since inception the Barons have initiated a number of special projects – most notably provision of a specialist wine library at Roseworthy Agricultural College and the raising of $30,000 to fund the research and publication of the Vineyard of the Empire”.
