BULLETIN: VOL. 62: ISSUE 17, NOVEMBER 11 2016 ROTARY REMEMBERS

Upon return to Canada in 2007 he rejoined a start up project here in Calgary, which is now ComplyWorks Ltd. Hav-ing started with a PowerPoint presentation, the company now has offices in Calgary, Toronto, Houston and Pretoria, South Africa. With his partners they created the Safety in Schools Foundation of Canada, a non-profit foundation providing industry recognized and accredited online safety training to high school students, sponsored by industry leaders in order to increase young workers’ safety knowledge before they enter the workforce. As Managing Direc-tor, LCol Wickware has grown this project to where it has provided over 21,000 safety courses to students in over 185 high schools at no cost to the government or the students. He is married to Patricia Murphy, who joined the CF in Vancouver with the British Columbia Regiment (Duke of Con-naught’s Own). Maj Murphy joined the King’s Own Calgary Regiment in 1993. Carrying on a family tradition, Maj Murphy is a lawyer by profession and her father, BGen Bill Murphy commanded the 1st Canadian Armoured Brigade in Italy and NW Europe during WW II, the Brigade under which this Regiment fought from Sicily through Italy and into NW Europe until the end of the war. Notes from Bulletin Editor: LCol Wickware advised us that Veterans and Enemies have changed The First World War was to be the war that was to end all wars, that did not happen Veteran’s ages range from mid 20's to mid 90's 1942 took tanks on an amphibious tour to Europe and that was a first to Normandy and Italy 1947-48 Korea and the Cold War began LCol. Wickware talked about the start of the United Nations and the new role of military in a peace

keeping role. Now it more of a peace keeping support, and yet still be able to defend against threats ie: Cypress: we have been there since 1963, we need better definitions as to why we are still there and what needs to be accomplished

Haiti: what are the conditions of success that should be determined before we send troops Bosnia: We learned not to give candies as then they would run towards the tanks and many of them got

run over, you need separate people to befriend the people different than soldiers, there needs to be a separation

Serbia: Climate conditions need to create policy change,. Serbians did not receive fuel, then it was real-ized that they could not pick up their garbage so it rotted in the streets creating a stench as well as a rodent and disease problem

Most people just want a better life for their children so it is important to have security in order to cre-ate security

There are many changes now in the middle east. You are not just keeping two parties a part but many factions are fighting each other and you have to be aware of all of the different ideals and parties in-volved

Is it better to use troops on the ground or use technology to deliver death and destruction There needs to be a diplomatic solution to what is happening and define the criteria for success, for se-

curity tasks, peace keeping support and security.

Brian Guichon thanked the speaker, for him giving us a bet-ter understanding of our military and their role in the world. Thank you for your years of service and speech and your service to the country
