Philippe Porée-Kurrer, born inFécamp, France, is a novelist

which has the gift never to writethe same book, not more thanhe established in a kind. If it isnecessary to find a commonpoint with all its novels, onecould speak about explorationbecause, even without bindingthe term to the concept ofvoyages, Philippe Porée-Kurreris an explorer of the conscience. Through the infinite facets ofdreamlike America included/un-derstood at the same time likethe receptacle and the matrix ofall the aspirations, its work, vio-lent and carnal, draws a pictureat the same time empathic andwithout kindness of the humanbeing divided between the “sky”and the “ground”. Having travelled in more thansixty countries, Philippe Porée-Kurrer saw today with Toronto(Ontario), even if, he says, it isIceland which it feels nearestand which it is in Polynesia thathe would like to pose his bags. The novel “A l’est de minuit”(East from Midnight), release atfall 2008, deals with strangephenomenon happening on aliner.

« Venus d’ailleurs »“The great adventure of

African immigration to Mauri-tius”

With Alain Gordon-Gentil, jour-nalist, writer and director

This film is the second chapter ofthe documentary series « Venusd’ailleurs » (« from elsewhere »),the first of which was devoted toIndian immigration to the IndianOcean. Alain Gordon-Gentil and David Con-stantin retrace the road taken bytens of thousands of African slavesdeported to islands in the IndianOcean, including Madagascar,Mozambique, and Mauritius. Histo-rians as well as authors and story-

tellers rekindle and discuss thememory of slavery.

For years, the islands of Madagas-car and Mauritius were the destina-tion for deported slaves who hailedpredominantly from Mozambique, but also from Western Africa. The number of deported slaves roseswiftly, however, the abolition ofslavery was a lengthy and compli-cated process. This documentaryexplores the characteristics of thishuman trade: Who were these

slaves? Where were the trade sites?Which processes did the trade fol-low?Over the past decade, Alain Gor-don-Gentil has become an estab-lished author, both in Mauritius andin France. Attentive and inquisitiveobserver of all aspects of humannature, Gordon-Gentil undertook toresearch this history and to docu-ment it through his twin passions:writing and reporting on location.

Three young people aretrying to find their way in life;trying to fulfill their dreams.

They do it surrounded bycharacters as colourful as they are

eccentric, who excel at the art of

confusing innocent feelings. Not surprising, since Alfred de Mussetdid not believe that there was aborder between the reality of hisexistence and the fiction of hispoetry. Himself a victim of a tu-multuous love affair with GeorgeSand, he created a work of viciousemotion, the result being a piece ofhis time that is for all time. We areseized by the incessant andcontradictory rhythm of life and ourfeelings. A tragedy of innocence,There Is No Trifling With Loverouses in our emotional memorythe involuntary torture ofcertain passions. Can we at oncelive and die from emotion?

French artist Laurent Grasso in-vades the streets at Prefix Institute. To kick off the fall season, Prefix ispleased to present the Canadianpremiere of Projection by interna-tionally renowned French artistLaurent Grasso. Curated by ScottMcLeod, the exhibition is also anexciting feature of Nuit Blanche,Saturday, October 4th, from 7 pmto sunrise.

LAURENT GRASSO

Laurent Grasso is an internationallyrenowned multimedia artist, working mostly with video and in-stallation. Born in France in 1972,Grasso lives and works in Paris andwas an artist in residence at theVilla Medicis (Roma) and ISCP (NewYork). His work has been exhibitednationally and internationally andsome recent shows include Neu-rocinema (Akbank Sanat, Istanbul),

TimeDust (Galerie Chez Valentin,Paris), and Electric Palace (Studio814, New York). For Grasso’s Projection, Prefix’spristine white setting is trans-formed into a long, dark room witha large-scale video projectedagainst the end wall, like a trainrushing into a tunnel you havedared to enter; the rumbling soundenhances the menacing atmos-phere. The video provides visualdepth yet quickly curtails this space

with the exhilarating sensation ofencroachment. The equally nebu-lous narrative heightens a peculiarfeeling of displacement.

"Four Sisters" is a silent, 30-minutevideo sequence shot on Toronto'swaterfront Gardiner Expresswayduring a late afternoon rush-hourcommute from east to west. TheGardiner, an elevated highwaycrossing much of the city, is flankedby a plethora of billboards andother signage. The video also doc-uments a construction boom on re-developed that parallel thehighway. Near the end of the video, the Gardiner returns to groundlevel and a series of roadside topi-ary gardens depicting corporatelogos and brand names come intoview. Beneath the video is a run-ning band of text that recounts 11short, anecdotal narratives in eitherEnglish or French. The often hu-morous narratives look at signpainting, branding and naming

through the lens of the artists' per-sonal experience. In the tradition ofsilent cinema, the artists will im-provise a live musical accompani-ment to the video.

Born and educated in Toronto,Collins has lived and worked inParis, France, since 1982. Arm-strong and Collins's collaborativeprojects have been exhibit all

around the world.

In the spring of 2007, pho-tographer Julie Rémy traveled toPort-au-Prince, the capital city ofHaiti to chronicle new and futuremothers as they struggle to sur-vive in a world filled with sexualassaults, gun battles, stigmatiza-tion and extreme poverty. MamanHaiti also wants to portray what itis to be a woman in Port-au-Prince, a city just a four hour flightaway from Montreal.

Maternal mortality in Haiti is thehighest in the western hemi-sphere. Approximately 630women die for every 100,000 livebirths (in Canada it is approxi-

mately two per 100,000) mainlydue to eclampsia (high bloodpressure that can be fatal). Insecurity and other social factors, such as stigmatization and the

cost of transportation, limitwomen’s ability to access healthfacilities when they need themmost. Jude Anne hospital, where

MSF provides services, is the onlyhospital in Haiti to offer qualityemergency obstetric care free ofcharge. This makes it a critical re-source, especially for women whocould never otherwise affordhealthcare.
