4 years after the DVD Live atShrine, Femi Kuti returns with agenerous, powerful and timelessnew album, continuing to exploreand push back the frontiers ofAfrobeat, an exploding mixture ofjazz, funk, and traditional Africanmusic, invented by his famous fa-ther: Fela Kuti.

From the ghettos of Lagos to thepalaces of corrupt politicians, Dayby Day takes us through the wind-ing roads of African paradox, in 13titles that grab your belly, your feet, your heart and your head.Whilst always respecting his musi-cal heritage, Femi has refined overmore than twenty years, anafrobeat with soul-jazz nuancesthat is entirely his own. If he accompanied Fela’s musicians

during his youth, he decided asearly as 1986 to free himself upand create his own band.Treading in the footsteps of his fa-mous father, Femi has shown astrong commitment to social andpolitical causes throughout his ca-reer.Femi is now the standard bearer forNigeria's funky, feisty Afrobeatsound. His unique concert in Toronto cancertainly be considered as themust-see event of this winter.

Translation is always a dangeroustight rope walk between sound andsense, especially with poetic trans-lation. And what about when thingsbecome even more complicated bythe demands of melody as in thetranslation of songs?

Three translators invite you to dis-cuss poetic translation, focusing onthe songs of George Brassens. Notin ears or dimwits need apply. Theaudience will be invited to partici-pate…

“Just between us, let’s agree,Ladies n’gents :For us to know we’re not, we’d haveto beIntelligent.”

Collaboration, Resistance andthe Georges Boudarel Affair. With Katie Edwards

On February 13th, 1991, just as hewas about to present his paper fora conference on Vietnamese cur-rent affairs at the Sénat in Paris,Professor Georges Boudarel was in-terrupted by a small group of vet-erans, who accused him of havingbeen a ‘political commissar’ in VietMinh Camp 113 during the In-dochina war, and for therefore hav-ing “blood on his hands” given thehigh mortality rate. The “BoudarelAffair” had broken, provoking an in-tense public debate centred notonly on Boudarel’s actions (whichhe qualified as anticolonial resist-ance), but on the nature of the In-dochina war and the relative merits

of the colonial project. This discus-sion analyses the debates sur-rounding the affair, its implicationsfor the “memory” of the Indochinawar, and its place within thebroader memorial context.

Katie Edwards is a PhD candidate inHistory at the University of Torontounder the supervision of ProfessorEric Jennings. She is currently writ-ing her dissertation, which ad-dresses the public memory of theIndochina war in France.

These images have an in-tentional silence to them, as if onemust tip toe through the house.Emphasizing their fragility, the sub-jects are photographed in a way todemonstrate the feeling of a pas-sing glance. These photographs at-tempt to capture both fleetingmoments come and gone, and con-templative moments that becomesignificant in the passing of time.

When people pass away, all that re-mains are their possessions, thethings they leave behind.

The physical being may be gonebut their memories linger in theremnants of their lives. With thisproject, I have collected images ofan era. With this project I have col-lected memories of my grandpar-ents’ home, against the inevitablemarch of time.”
