Black History MonthOctober is Black History Month - a month to celebrate the history and diversity of ethnic minorities the world over, and also to look at the problems they still face in the world today.

We’ve packed Week 3 full of events around the theme of International Peace and Justice: from debates about

multiculturalism to film showings and workshops by leading charities and campaigners. Check out the

Facebook group Warwick SU Black History Month at tinyurl.com/warwickbhm

Check the time. Yes, it’s already three weeks into term. It feels like just yesterday that campus was empty, when the people you now spend your time with and call your friends were strangers on the other side of the planet.

Now lectures are in full swing and you have covered so much ground that you will be looking for your next break. For some of you, that will be in a few weeks. For the rest who don’t get a reading week, that will be slightly longer!

Freshers Fortnight might have ended, but nothing in the SU has changed. We still have an awesome evening line up - keep your eyes on www.thecopperrooms.com and get your tickets in advance so that you don’t miss out. We still have our sports clubs and societies. We are still there to talk to any student with a question, a complaint or a compliment.

If you are having any problems settling in or you have any queries, come in and talk to us. We are bound to have an answer for you.

the grub clubGrub Club is a brand-spanking new scheme for students, brought to us by BBC Headroom. Cooking and eating the right food doesn’t just fuel your body, it can also help feed your mind. Whether you have an essay to write, an exam to take or a hangover to shake off, the right kind of food can give you the energy you need, and help keep your stress levels down. It’s also a great way to socialise - instead of junk food and ready-meals for one, why not get together once a week and cook a meal for your friends?

We’re gonna be having a MASSIVE picnic on Sunday at the end of Week 3… the only entrance condition is that you bring along some homemade food. Whether it’s sandwiches, cakes or an elaborate picnic hamper, get involved and come along to eat with us! You’ll be hearing more from your Sabbs about our grand foodie-schemes in the future - look out for it!

If you are stuck for ideas on what to cook night in, night out, why not get one of our great student cookbooks? Sorted, written by students for students, is packed full of easy-to-make recipes. From soups to smoothies, cakes to casseroles, Sorted really is a recipe for student survival. Buy online for only £12 at www.warwicksu.com/shop - bargain!

warwick spotlightIf it happens at Warwick, we will have it covered each and every day! Through photography, Warwick Spotlight aims to capture all activity happening in and around the Warwick Bubble, from students brushing their teeth in Claycroft first thing in the morning to A-list celebrities performing in The Copper Rooms last thing at night! One day we’ll be sneaking into a rehearsal for the latest student production to bring you some exclusive shots and the next racing to sports matches to give you the latest updates. Even the Vice Chancellor of the University can’t escape our lens! Freshers to Postgrads. Awake or asleep. We don’t want to miss a thing...

Whether attending a special event or just going about your normal daily routine... YOU could find yourself in the warwicksu.com/spotlight

Want to join the photography team? Get in touch! We’d love to hear your ideas about this exciting project which we can’t wait to launch.

freshers fortnightFreshers Fortnight is now over and we hope you all

enjoyed the fun and frolics laid on by the SU. I am sure all of you have eaten your fair share of Domino’s and are now making the

most of their late-night delivery deals! Freshers Fair attracted lots of interest with a great variety of stalls and giveaways - don’t forget to use your goodie

bag folks, they’re perfect for carrying books or bringing your shopping home!

The Fairs over the first two weeks of term saw thousands of you join a range of clubs, societies and volunteering initiatives - these will really make a difference to

your time at Uni, you will meet some fantastic people and do amazing things. Don’t worry if you missed anything as you can join all of our clubs and societies online at www.warwicksu.com. We also had our most successful Book Sale yet, with £46k

going right back to you guys.

The Freshers Ball saw Annie Mac burn up the dance floor with some seriously dangerous tunes, topping off an incredible Freshers Line-up including Tinchy Stryder, Chase & Status, Hadouken!, Kano, Dreadzone, Simon Bird, a new face in the form of Pop! and triumphant returns for Top B, Electric City, Crash, Pressure and Hustle. Don’t worry if you missed anything, our club nights will be going from strength to strength

throughout the year and those aren’t the last of our big names - keep an eye on www.thecopperrooms.com for the latest news.

We hope you had an amazing Freshers Fortnight, but don’t forget if there’s anything you are worried about the Student Advice

Centre based on Floor 2 of SUHQ is here for you. It’s free, confidential and our team really know their

stuff, so head on up or drop them a line at [email protected].

halls societiesAre you living in Arthur Vick and tired of hearing that you are too posh to play sports? Part of the Rootes massive and people think that all you do is party all day and then even harder all night? Or maybe you wish that Westwood had a little more recognition than ‘oh, those people that live so far away’? Well, now you have the chance to change that. Join your hall society to take part in:

INTRA-UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE ○Prove once and for all who the smartest hall of them all really is!

SPORTS TOURNAMENTS ○Football and Netball leagues are being set up in the next couple of weeks, and if you fancy setting up some alternative sports leagues get in touch with your Hall Exec.

DAYS OUT ○From paintballing and go-karting to a nice picnic in the park.

QUEUE JUMPS ○Win queue-jumps for your hall with fundraising competitions.

RUN THE SHOW ○Every society needs an exec to run it and this is your chance to take the reins. Make sure you join up to run for Hall Exec and even if you don’t want to be the top dog you’ll need to be a member to vote.

join for free now at www.warwicksu.com/halls And don’t forget to order your Halls Hoody - over 40 different colours to choose from with your specific hall artistically displayed on the back, and the choice to add your name. Head to www.warwicksu.com/hoodies

electionsNominations for this year’s Autumn Elections have now closed and the full list of victims, ahem, candidates are now available on the SU website. Plenty of people have put themselves forward as potential Union Councillors, Forum Reps and NUS Delegates to represent you guys at all levels; be it your Union or a national one.

You decide who gets the roles. Voting opens at 9am on Tuesday Week 3 (20th October) and will remain open until 9pm on Thursday (22nd October). To keep things simple, it’s all done online.

So, what are you waiting for? Check out www.warwicksu.com/elections and make sure your voice is heard!

get involved

watch out for your sabb! Each of the halls on campus has been adopted by a Sabbatical Officer from the Union. You might have already seen the posters, and may have even met them already. Over the next couple of weeks, they will be running around trying to meet as many people as possible - look out for your Sabb! Question them and get as much information as you can. You can even invite them for dinner (hint hint)...

So, this just in: the world’s going to end this Halloween. Zombies are taking over, and mankind’s doomed to extinction. Oh well, eh?!

Luckily, there’s a place you can find sanctuary from the incoming apocalypse, and that’s right here at The Copper Rooms. We’ll be asking you to don your finest scare-wear to fend off the Zombies as they begin their terrifying onslaught. We’ll need military people. Doctors and nurses. Monsters, horrors and loonies. In short, we need you to get your freak on and help save the earth from the marauding hordes!

You’ll be able to get your suggestions in for the last tune you’d want to hear before it all goes south, with regular news updates on the situation outside. Come midnight, the world will come to a clattering end and we’ll dance like there’s (literally) no tomorrow.

When there’s no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the earth. Don’t get left out in the cold!
