Hanley '34, Presi- dent of the Women's Advertising Club of Providence, and Miss Ellen C. ' Mul- grew '13, Bryant's first Teacher-Training graduate now Dean of Girls at Central Falls High School, R. I. RECORD HOMECOMING ATTENDANCE As Alumni Secretary I want to thank the many alumni who came to our May HOMECOMING. Everyone reports that it was a tremendous success with at- tendance and interest higher than ever before in the history of the College. Highlights were the President's Recep- tion and the evening Banquet. Dean Francis Keppel of Harvard's Graduate School of Education, gave a splendid talk stating that over the next 15 years there would be a phenomenal increase in col- lege enrollment since it is expected that over this period the number of graduates from secondary schools in the United States will be doubled. He emphasized the growing importance of organized alumni participation in helping colleges fulfill their responsibilities, and stated that our common ground is the preserva- tion and strengthening for future gen- erations of our priceless heritage of free American education. Sensation of the evening was the FACULTY FOLLIES which received an uproarious welcome for a most entertaining performance. Of those alumni receiving awards the three following recently qualified as Cer­tified Public Accountants in R. I.: Ralph J. Northrup '40, (Evening School), Al­bert O. Putnam '49, Edward S. Nowak '48. Ray H. Hawksley '29, General Treas­urer for the State of R. I., was also given a citation.

PRESIDENT HENRY L. JACOBS re­ceived two honorary degrees during June. The Rhode Island College of Pharmacy awarded him the degree of Doctor of Science, and the Portia Law School and Calvin Coolidge College in Boston gave him a Doctor of Letters.

Commencement Reception and Luncheon Aug. 6

An informal Reception and Luncheon for the recipients of honorary degrees will be held at the Sheraton-Biltmore Hotel. Distinguished guests will include Governor Dennis J. Roberts of R. I. and other state dignitaries. The Reception will be in the Ballroom from 12 to 1 and the luncheon will be in the Garden Restaurant from 1 to 2.

Alumni Council Meets The Alumni Council met in Providence

at the University Club on June 11. It was decided that the Rhode Island alum­ni groups be organized in nine geo­graphical districts and a map was marked indicating the districts desired. From each of these areas two or three repre­sentatives are to be chosen forming an Executive Committee which will then meet in Providence with the existing pro tern committee for the election of officers.

R. I. Alumni Directory President Henry L. Jacobs has author­

ized the multilithing of a Directory of Bryant Alumni in Rhode Island. This should be ready for distribution early in September. About 60% of the alumni returned the forms requesting their pres­ent occupations for Directory purposes. When known the occupations will be in­cluded otherwise the name and address only will be listed as shown on the addressograph plates. Listing is al­phabetical by towns. Our aim is to eventually have a complete directory by states.

Late News ANTHONY E. MAURO '25 has been

appointed Chief Examiner of the Corpo­ration Business Tax Section of the State Division of Taxation. Having a degree in accounting and business administra­tion, Mr. Mauro is a member of the Provi­dence Chapter, National Association of Cost Accountants and has served as a Director of the Chapter. Mr. and Mrs. Mauro live at 214 Garden City Drive, Cranston, R. I.

DAVID P. ETZEL '40, C.P.A.-for the past 8 years Agent and Technical Ad­visor with the Appellate Division of the Internal Revenue Service-has joined the firm of Bailey, Moore and Glazer, Certi­fied Public Accountants, 152 Temple Street, New Haven, Conn.

Dave graduated with a B. S. degree in Accounting and Finance, Summa Cum Laude, and was an instructor in Ac­counting at Bryant. He left the staff of a national accountiIlg firm to serve two years in the European Theatre of Opera­tions of World War II as Captain in the Troop Carrier Command, First Allied Airborne Army. Resident in Pawson Park, Branford, Conn., with his wife, the former Eve Kohler, Dave has four children: David, Jr., Bonnie, Jane, and Michael.

HELEN GIFTOS '50 of 158 Linden St., Pittsfield, Mass., was selected as a member of the Department of Defense delegation to the Geneva Conference. Helen was a dean's list student and has been in Washington with the Dept. of Defense for a year and a half. She was the only secretary in the department to be tapped for this important trip.

RICHARD LITTLEFIELD, Pawtucket, R. 1. was awarded an 'M.B.A. (Master of Business Administration) degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Busi­ness. Dick graduated from Bryant in 1950 with a B.S. in accounting.

ARTHUR N. BUTEAU '51 of 31 Thornley Street, Pawtucket, R. 1. left by plane for Liberia, French West Africa on June 10. He will teach commercial sub­jects at the Harbel Plantation School near Monrovia on the Firestone 80,000 acre rubber plantation employing 25,000. "Art" has signed a two-year contract saying "I accepted the offer principally for the education and experience."

ciation to the following sororities for g ifts to the newly decorated Girls' Lounge in South Hall: Sigma Iota Beta, Phi Upsilon, Sigma Iota Chi, Kappa l;>elta Kappa and Sigma Lambda Theta.

Let's Have a Bryant Club Alumni members who wish to start a

Br yan t Club may obtain on request a copy of the little bulletin "Let's Have a Bryant Club," recently compiled by your Alumni .secretary. The booklet gives suggestions on how to choose officers, committees, decide on a purpose for meetings, types of meetings, program ideas, etc. A proposed Constituti on is also included. Following Alumni Coun­cil approval the Alumni Office will be very glad to help you organize a meeting and will furnish you with a list of all alumni in your area as well as duplicate and mail any notices you desire to send out. Mr. Drew-Bear will be glad to be present at your initial meeting and is available for advice on speakers, etc.
