Brighton's famous Madeira Drive _serves as a venuefor many well-known sporting events-but none, I think, more popular or more successful than the Annual SpeedTrials organised by the Brighton & Hove Motor Club.Brighton can count itself fortunate in possessing such awonderful course for the occasion.

To everyone concerned, whether they be competitors, officials or enthusiastic spectators, I extend my warmestgreetings and to the Club I send my hearty congratu-lations on their past efforts and my best wishes foranother highly successful and enjoyable day's trials.

BRIGHTON SPEED TRIALS

This is the 54th anniversary of Brighton Speed Trials with anentry of 280. An increase on last year of 14 entries.

A new Class this year is for ladies driving Sports Cars (Class7) which has been well supported.

We welcome again two competitors who have been regularentrants for very many years-Forrest Lycett (Bentley) and F. J.Williams (Norton-Jap. MjC.) Jack Brabham has entered a Cooperbut when going to press it is uncertain if he will drive. Sports CarClasses are well supported and Racing Car Class entries are higherthis year, despite competition in the Racing Calendar.

This event has always proved an attraction for the class ofracing car known as a "Special." Designed by their owners toconvey them from one point to another in the shortest possible time, the engine is usually the largest in the lightest possible chassis.Sydney Allard is running an entirely new "Special" this year withtwo Steyr air-cooled eight cylinder 4500 c.c. engines mounted side-by-side, with two gear boxes, four wheel drive and sixteen carbs. If Sydney can make his carburettors synchronise he should stand avery good chance for "best time of the day."

Speed Trial enthusiasts will have memories of other well-knowncars of this nature-E. Lloyd Jones with his Triangle Flying Saucer(21,000 c.c.) and F. M. Wilcock (Swandean Spitfire Special 27,000c.c.) both with aero engines and four wheel drive. A. J. Butterworth(A.J.B. 4425 C.c. Steyr engine) made B.T.D. 1949. F. C. LeGallaisfrom the Channe] Islands (rear-engined Jaguar Special, 3442 c.c.)J. G. Fry (Freikaiserwagen s. 1097 c.c.) holder of his Class Recordfor many years until beaten by C. R. Instone (Djinn Spec. 1098 cc.)John Bolster (Bloody Mary 1962 c.c.) with four Rudge engines andseveral yards of chain. R. A. Waddy (Fuzzi 1000 c.c.) two Rudgeengines and four wheel drive. A. N. L.Maclachlan (Austin 747 c.c.)whose amazing side-valve supercharged Austin Spec. beat therecord for 1500 c.c. Class.

The 1926 Maclachlan Austin is running today driven by J. G.Sutton, also the Freikaiserwagen driven by M. J. Parkes.Class Records broken in 1958.Sports Cars 1lOi to 1500 c.c. : E. Payne=-Hume Lotus 27.91 sees.

Brighton Speed Trials again irresistibly attracts the trueenthusiast from many counties, and on the glittering surface thescene remains much the same. True there are some new faces, and maybe some of the old ones are missing but there still remainsthe elusive scent of challenge.

Underneath this fascinating facade a large body of keentypes are pursuing their daily motoring lives with an importantchange of outlook. A considerable percentage now drive nimblefamily saloons, and many others comfortable fast tourers. TheSports-Racer as every day transport is 'out'.

Appreciating both the reasons for this change and theopportunities it created, we as the suppliers of iateresting cars, setabout modifying the little Renault Dauphine, tailoring it withcustomary enthusiasm to fit into the niche made in our ownsporting stable.

Now, after three years of development, hundreds of ourtuned versions are bappily fulfilling the dual role of docile shoppingutility and brisk sporting carriage. They display comfort with tautsuspension, neutral high geared steering and notable economywithout loss of reliability,

The cost of these modifications, from the pretty twinoutlet chromed exhaust at 48,- on exchange through to the full50 h.p. Gordini kit at £80, remains strictly competitive. Thequality is as you would expect from a firm that has activelysupported competitive motoring since its establishment.
