    Broken Brighton?we still love you

  • WAKE UP, dont givE UPThe greatest cities in the world are that way because people invest a lot of emotion in them. When James LCD Soundsystem Murphy sang New York, I Love You But Youre Bringing Me Down he was pushed to do so because he felt betrayed by those in charge of it. And its a situation that we find ourselves in here at SOURCE. It seems to be bad news after bad news at the moment, and were not sure who to blame. The list of venues falling off the map is growing most importantly with the seemingly unnecessary loss of The Freebutt while the number of chain stores is growing beyond sensible levels. Whats to be done? Well, this special edition of SOURCE with its exclusive, insightful Modern Toss cover is just the start, just the wake up call. This is where we start to protect what weve got, appreciate whats still here. Because what we have is still the best city in Britain a feeling backed up by a recent poll. Were pretty positive people here in the SOURCE secret bunker, the things we love we might be being attacked on all sides, but we know well get through things. This is the turning point.

The Metal Hammer course also offers up the chance to win an Orange guitar stack for best guitarist, plus swag bags full of choice kit also to be had.

MEDICINE CHEST OPENSAfter over 15 years serving vegetarian cuisine we are desperately sad to hear that the Sanctuary Cafe will be shutting its doors. Taking some of the hurt away is the news that the space will become The Medicine Chest, serving to tickle all alcoholic fancies with a range of fine wines, deliciously inventive cocktails and refined spirits. Anticipate an exquisite and all new range of eats and handpicked entertainment, live music included. The Chest also boasts a late licence, making it an equally good night or day hangout. Well still miss the Sanctury though.

PARTY IN THE HOODBrunswick Festival, the celebration of the community run by local residents and volunteers returns to Brunswick Square for the 29th time. This year there are two weekends of outdoor fun lined up, with the annual Scruffs dog show, arts and crafts and kids stuff on Sunday 15th, bringing the countryside into the city in St Annes Well Gardens. Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd see the grassy square turn into a hotbed of culture: music, theatre, dance, beer, world food and loads more.

TALLY-HO TEAM School friends and Brighton residents Laura and Paul are embarking on the 2010 Mongol Rally. Starting out at Goodwood, the pair, along with other UK, Spanish and Italian contestants, will race across the continent to reach the capital Ulaanbaatar first, following their route of choice. Driving a suped-up one-litre VW Polo, the pair are raising money for Cancer Research UK, The Christina Noble Childrens Foundation and The Neurofibromatosis Association, so dig deep for the daring and not-at-all dastardly duo.

DUKE OF YORKSROCKSBrighton thespians, lend us your ears, and Synchronicity productions your talents. To celebrate the Duke of Yorks cinemas centenary this September, the producers are creating a radio-style remake of Graham Greenes classic novel, Brighton Rock. With the original 1947 film starring Richard Attenborough having put Brighton on the movie map, it seems quite fitting to relive the magic with a live performance. Original film clips will be screened behind, as a seven-piece jazz band orchestrate the piece. Email [email protected] for more details.

  • MISS SARANDONS PING-PONGSOCIAL CLUB With Londons Ping-Pong Parlour having just opened and table tennis clubs a firmly established part of the New York hipster scene, the arrival of the worlds alt-est sport in our fair city seems overdue by minutes. Starting on Saturday 7th at The Brunswick, Miss Sarandons Ping-Pong Social Club provides you with the chance to don your best sports-casual, enter a tournament or just have a shits-n-giggles knock around. If this isnt enough, the soundtrack will be provided by top bands Shock Defeat! and Yokoko, the ace DJ Bugs Raplin, and live commentary from two chaps called Chris.

FOGGSIts probably not too contentious to say that residents of Seven Dials area have never been spoilt for choice when it comes to bars that you might actually want to go to. With the opening of Foggs though, things are now different. With a new outdoor smoking area, fresh dcor and free wi-fi, the place is now unrecognisable from its previous incarnation as the awfully named Rat & Trumpet. Theyve even got a popcorn machine, so if you live nearby give it a whirl.

BOHO GELATOEverybody likes ice cream, right? This gem of a boutique, nestled a few doors along from the Fishbowl and the Mock Turtle tearooms, sells a stunning 24 different types of ice cream. Handmade on the premises by proprietor Seb and including toffee apple, mojito, chili chocolate, white choc cheesecake, and classics such as pistachio, vanilla malt and strawberry sorbet theres definitely a flavour to suit every palette. Find a flyer to get three for two, yum.

BEATS UNITED Despite various closures of sorts, check out Jams newest club night. Launching on Friday 13th, Beats United brings together a mix of live acts (yes, live music still exists in Brighton, just about) and DJs. Starting it all off in true hip hop style is Blak Twang and the Rottonstra Family, Million Dan and the Dappa Crew plus reggae DJs to be announced, all for the advanced price of 5. What a bargain.

LA CAVE A FROMAGEComing soon to Western Road is none other than Londons finest proprietor of cheese, the seductively-titled La Cave A Fromage. Foodies can rejoice at the unrivalled selection of British farmhouse cheeses, some being exclusive to La Cave too. The finest cheese accompaniments will also be in bountiful supply, with a fine charcuterie (thats meat counter to you and us), artisan breads and fine wines for that perfect picnic. Heaven on a cracker.

FARMERS MARKETFood, glorious food, locally-sourced farmers produce will be the chant du jour when North Roads Farmers Market opens on Saturday 14th. Put together by the owners of Farm Cafe down the road, we can all delight in shopping for fresh, Sussex-grown fruit and vegetables, along with dairy, fish, meat, game... the list is endless. • TREVOR MOSS & HANNAH-LOU Prince Albert Thurs 5thOne half of a special Loose Music double bill at the Prince Albert, highly rated husband and wife duo Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou have been gaining plenty of plaudits of late. Theyre continuing the rich heritage of classic English folk music think Fairport Convention or Dylan at his most reflective and youll have some idea what to expect. Completing the line-up, support comes in the form of some pastoral folk and Americana from the West Country courtesy of newest Loose signing and Drift Collective main-man The R.G Morrison. (JK)

BOSS KITE Hectors House Fri 6th Boss Kite is a Brighton-based pioneer of the electro movement known as UK skweee. Originating in Sweden and Finland, skweee combines minimalist synths and basslines with rnb, funk and soul rhythms, and has recently influenced dubstep artists such as Rusko, Joker and Zomby amongst others. With a definitely slinky, sexy take on the genre and a fat bass injection, Boss Kite is giving UK skweee its own distinct identity. If you want to be part of an exciting, burgeoning scene, this is the place to be tonight. (RH)

KENELIS Hydrant Sat 7th Loyal to the queercore circuit, Farnborough alt-rockers Kenelis make two appearances at Pride today: first on the Womens Stage in Preston Park, and then at their own party at The Hydrant. Their post-grunge melodics (see free download single Sick) should fit in fine in the pub this evening, where their guest DJ is firebrand Big Brother contestant Shabby, fresh from performing with her own band Voodoo Hussy in the park that afternoon. Pride waverers may wish to note theres lesbian mud-wrestling going on upstairs. (DL)

THE NUNS Hope Sat 7th This is, amazingly, an all-woman, six-piece tribute to The Monks: the 60s GIs-in-Germany garage band whose repetitive, overdriven nuggets became an international cult (not least with The Fall, who covered them again and again). Following The Monks tonsures and cassocks image, The Nuns perform in habits, only slightly concealing their identities as various former Headcoatees and Mambo Taxi veterans. Riot grrrls down for Pride may be pleased to hear that the very wonderful Debbie Smith (Echobelly, Curve, Nightnurse) is also a Nun. (DL)

WOLF GANG Audio Fri 13thYou have to tick a lot of boxes from day one in order to get noticed in the music industry these days. Gently epic indie freak Wolf Gang managed it just right. His first step was to get initial backing from the Neon Gold label, who consistently prove to be the tastemaker to the tastemakers. He followed that up with an online buzz so loud it would register on the Richter scale. Finally he knocked out timeless pop tune after timeless pop tune and the major labels dutifully wet their quills. (TR)

BRIGHTON RUMBLE RUMBLE RECORDS SHOWCASE Concorde 2 Sat 14thSince the demise of the Engine Room, Rumble has moved upmarket somewhat to the Concorde for their showcase of Rumble Records bands. Dave Mumbles and Lucky Phil host Jessie & The Orbits, Kansas City Cryers and Knocksville, with guest DJs spinning rockabilly, rocknroll and blues bop. An added bonus comes in the shape of Modesty DJs in the front bar, with 60s, northern and garage grooves. Its mods, its rockers, but the only fight should be to get a ticket. (NC)

  • JOHN BLEK & THE RATS Hope Sat 14thHeres a show to take a chance on if youre up for a guaranteed Saturday night hoedown. Rounding off the UK leg of a tour in support of their debut single, the Rats will be bringing the hard-knock attitude of bottle living in Southern Ireland to our own south coast for the first time. But while the music might be the spirit of Ireland with a mixer of their American folk forefathers, this is a night for those who take it neat with a stamp of the foot on the floorboards. (NC)

THE LOWLAND HUNDRED Prince Albert Sat 14thExperimental pastoral duo The Lowland Hundred are breaking out of their Aberystwyth exile for this years Green Man Festival, and play a warm-up show at the Albert this afternoon for their label bosses Victory Garden Records. Mixing field recordings with strung-out song structures, their album Under Cambrian Sky helps develop a hauntological strain of never-never folk music. Acoustic guitar instrumentalists -a+M are an unexpected, welcome addition to the supports. (DL)

EASY STAR ALL STARS Concorde 2 Tues 17thYou might not know it listening to Climbing Up The Walls but OK Computer has elements that are perfect for reggae strong melodies, intense dynamics and trippy soundscapes. So says Michael Goldwasser, who produced and arranged Radiodread, the New York bands reworking of Thom and cos landmark 1997 album, which followed 2003s self-explanatory Dub Side Of The Moon. Expect to see Mrs SOURCE, who loves reggae, down the front for tonights encore of Rockafella Skunk, their special tribute to Brighton. (BG)

THE TELESCOPESHectors House Weds 18thBack in the day, it was all baggy flares, long fringes and even longer faces around these parts. My Bloody Valentine ran the government, Ride had no defence and Jesus & Mary Chain were, controversially, on drugs. Meanwhile, the Telescopes headed up our fledgling space programme, issuing intergalactic anthems to the stars rather than fucking about with technology and satellites like the phoney Americans. With the band now back down to earth, playing soppy indie to UK shoeboxes, NASA clearly has a lot to learn. (BG)

THE BESNARD LAKESFreebutt Fri 20th The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse proclaimed the band in 2007, only to then contradict themselves on their latest album by insisting The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night. Clearly, there is an identity crisis at the core of this group. Which is hardly surprising, given the fact they are a bold, brave blitz of Canadian indie rock from Montreal, Canada, centred around a husband and wife. But make no mistake, their explosive symphonic roar could put out any Arcade Fire. (BG)

THE LOW ANTHEMKomedia Weds 25th How many more American bands must take the ancient, weary format of guitar music and imbue it with mystery and moonshine before we give up? Last year, the Rhode Island quartet issued their second album, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, a wistful, blood on the tracks and whisky on the brain slow-burner, glowing with melancholic thirst, endless highways and barroom balls. We were seduced and the rest of the world will surely follow. OMG, The Low Anthem!, as the kids say outside Rounder. (BG)

  • MIRRORS Audio Sat 28th SOURCE is not one to blow our own trumpet too often. Thats what Mrs SOURCE is here for. However, it would be a disservice not to, once again, proclaim the monochrome, urbane sounds and sheer unadulterated style of Brighton natives Mirrors. For all their serious expressions, Kraftwerk robotics and cold, cool calculation, this is a group that recognises the waterfall of emotion before their fingertips. Everyone knows how good New Order, Depeche Mode and OMD were. No-one can say the same about this band. Yet. (BG)

ZOLA JESUS Freebutt Tues 31stAfter wowing all and sundry at SxSW, 2011 is to be Zola Jesus year for the taking it would seem. Much fawned over/lauded in the hip (and not-so-hip) press, her sound perfectly straddles weirdo electronic ambient landscapes, singer songwriter lamentation and catchy no-wave noise. Her first trip to Europe was as the support for Fever Ray on her tour, and the match-up is pitch-perfect. At the tender age of 21, this Texan may be sonically bleak, but her futures bright. (MB)

AT THE EDGE OFTHE SEA FESTIVALeDgY, bY the seA. Job Done.WORDS BY NICK COQUETConcorde 2, Sat 28th 3-10pm

Twenty years ago The Wedding Present hit home because their songs were all about splitting up with your girlfriend. All of them. Well, except Kennedy which was about Jimmy Carter, or something. Now all their fans are happily married and more likely worried about their sons girlfriends. But no mind theyre still gruff and noisy, and have some great songs (mostly aboutwell, you know). Bandleader David Gedge is back this summer with another Edge Of The Sea festival with his band of indie stalwarts, their associated offshoots and some local crowd pleasers.

Kicking off with an acoustic set from Cinerama, Gedges other band, the night features sets from The Ukranians, Klee, Sharks and Persil, ending with The Wedding Present doing an end-to-end of their signature Bizarro album. Peppered between the sets are acoustic performances from Darren Hayman (ex-Hefner), band bassist Terry de Gastro, guitarist Paul Dorrington as Rose Leaf Miner and Brightons own Half Sisters. There will also be custom short story readings from Short Fuse, all on a Wedding Present theme, and music from DJ Rocker.

As an awayday for the committed or merely curious, this is a perfect opportunity to get some sun on your back as the fest spills out onto the beach with plastic cups and picnics. Check the Facebook page at tinyurl.com/edgeofsea.

  • Post-rock four-piece Crooked Mountain, Crooked Sea have covered a lot of ground since they began playing shows last year. Their sound is ever evolving, taking post-rock and making it poignant, relevant and interesting again. Complex rhythms and intelligent lyrics sung with agitated, shouty vocals lead to far flung comparisons, ranging from Cursive for their similarly narrative songs to the restrained rage of Fugazi and At The Drive In. Already a favourite of BBC 6Musics Tom Robinson, Crooked Mountain, Crooked Sea are destined for great things. What kind of bands did you grow up watching?Dave: Having always lived in Brighton, none of the bands I grew up watching were similar to us in the slightest. Until I joined I could never really find anything I liked on the Brighton music scene, I guess I was looking in the wrong places. As soon as I met these guys though they started dragging me to gigs unwillingly and then eventually I started finding bands that were actually quite good and had their place on the scene here.

Some people would say that post-rock is a bit of a staid genre these days having gone through so many phases, why do you persist in that scene, what makes you different?Andy: I wouldnt particularly say were a post-rock band.Steve: Id say were more post-hardcore to put a name to it, or you could even say post-punk because it kind of fits in with that too. The thing is that we all like different music, we all call our band by a different genre anyway and we all take different inspirations and bring it to our songs.Andy: I still kind of see it as just writing songs, and they just end up sounding a bit like that...

Sean: I dont want to speak for Dave but, Im pretty sure Dave and I dont know anything about post-rock, we have all these other influences from other bands that we like to listen to, and I suppose they reflect the style we bring to our songs. Ive always mainly been into electronica and IDM myself, I didnt really go to gigs before I joined the band, I was all about going to clubs but thats all changed now.

How did the band end up in Brighton? Andy: Me and Steve both moved to Brighton to start a band individually, Dave our bassist is from Hove, and Sean moved here for university, so we all met up with each other about a year ago. I grew up quite close to Brighton and went to gigs here quite a lot when I was younger. I suppose Brightons always been notorious for its music scene.

Youve played quite a few shows in Brighton, especially when you first started out, whats your favourite venue? All: Hectors House.Steve: The sound guy Jacks great, its the best live sound weve had, I think.Sean: Theres always a good crowd of people in there because the gigs are usually free, and its always locals that you play to.Dave: The promoter at Hectors really supports local music, he puts local bands EPs on sometimes in between bands playing at the shows.

What other local bands have you played shows with that youd recommend?Andy: Were friends with a band called Illness who we really like, weve also played a few shows with Everyone To The Anderson, who are great. Hold Your Horse Is have to get a mention too. Weve played quite a few shows and a tour with them earlier this year, theyre fun to gig with.

  • JOY ORBISON Life Fri 6thWhile he might have only been in the spotlight for a year or so (but what a bright light!), Mr Orbison Jr has lived behind the decks since he was 13 when his uncle, dnb legend Ray Keith, introduced him to jungle and garage. So, basically, he knows what hes doing. Though hes lumped in with dubstep hes really got more to do with deep house, coming on like a Detroit version of Matthew Herbert. If youve read any interviews with any dance producers recently youll know that his own records have his peers wetting their knickers, so expect pure intricate quality all the way through his set. (JK)

EVIL NINE Digital Sat 14thIts a very exciting time right now for Tom and Pat new direction, new label, new blog and more. If you missed their Ultimo track a couple of months ago you might think that theyre still on the electro thing (they gave up breaks years ago, of course) but actually theyre heading up the incoming 90s house revival. The next single features El-P and in the meantime theyve remixed Gorillaz. Last time we spoke to them Tom was doing the DJing while Pat worked at home. As this is a hometown gig maybe well get a rare return to dexnfx then. Expect it to be jackin anyway. (JK)

FLOORPLAY Coalition Sat 14thIt must be nice when you have to shoot home from touring Brazil to play your own kicking night, as electro house stars

Prok & Fitch have to these days. Actually sometimes its Ibiza. Or somewhere else glamorous. This time out theyve got Australian superstar DJs The Stafford Brothers in tow. If you havent heard of them, to give you a vague idea of how massive they are in their home country theyre coming down to Coalition with a full camera crew to record for their reality TV show. Releases on Toolroom, Defected and Ministry will see them just as big here soon. (JK)

KRAFTY KUTS Digital Sat 14thNow heres a change Supercharged plugs into Digital with head honcho Krafty Kuts. The Against The Grain DJ never fails to get the crowd bouncing with his quick mixing of feelgood dance music including his own supreme productions like the funky I Need You and riotous Backup. Plus hes just released his own iPhone app proving Kraftys still one of the most cutting edge artists out there. Brooklyn based AC Slater joins him for some genre smashing party anthems and Gameboy beats. (ZC)

GLADSTONEBURY Gladstone Fri 20th-Sun 22ndIts a good days work when you come up with the idea of a three-day festival in the Gladstone pub down on Lewes Road and the name Gladstonebury pops into your head. But the pats on backs dont end there. For a start the crew behind this yearly event are aiming to raise 1,000 for Hove based charity, Whoopsadaisy, who help kids with cerebral palsy lead a more independent life. But no one wants to hang around a pub feeling worthy is it going to be any fun? Damn straight. The line up is really impressive, with JFB, Geometri, Nomark and many others on the decks while New Groove Formation, The ASBOS and Zora & The Tatsmiths take to the stage. Were intrigued by The

MARcUS INTALEX Audio Fri 20thMarcus Intalex has been releasing tracks since 1994 and as one of drumnbasss veterans hes got a record collection to make your eyes bleed. As a producer he errs on the side of thoughtful dnb and his tunes always have a soulful groove. Tonight hes supported by forward thinker Commix and Brighton hero Cyantific, whose surgical productions for Hospital are like full-on movie scores, and have cemented his name in the liquid scene forever. (ZC)

wHERE THE TRAFFIc GOES Cobblers Thumb Sat 21stTraffic is an irregular, but rather necessary, dose of anti-Tory independent pop music from DJs and musicians Andy Action (Socialist Leisure Party, Action Painting!) and Tam Bam-a-Lam (My Name In Lights). Taking its name from an old Jasmine Minks single, Where The Traffic Goes sees the pair mixing up jangle pop, soul and rocknroll classics, old and new. Visiting guest DJs from the UK indie scene occasionally join them below the dartboard too. (DL)

cHEw THE FAT Audio Fri 27thAudio smashes the Bank Holiday weekend with this top-dollar bill. Headlining is Foamo, the 21-year old whos been cracking out wobbly basslines and fidget-driven remixes for the likes of La Roux, Mystery Jets and Major Lazer. Hes joined by Lee Mortimer and his bass-heavy style of house, as well as electro dubstep blends from Randomer. The raucous Bare

Noize, whove received airplay from 1Xtras Mistajam, and next level funk courtesy of Linton Brown also make a showing. (ZC)

NORMAN JAYCoalition Fri 27thTonight is flagged up as 30 Years Of Good Times which, is exactly what you want from Sir Norm. His Notting Hill mix up and throw down parties are beyond legendary even the Queen gave him an official thumbs up. Soulful, funky, proper dancing music, the selection is serious but the atmosphere is anything but trainspottery. After three decades there will be some great tunes were hoping for that old bootleg of Hall & Oates Man Eater over the beats of Jerus Ya Playin Yaself that he used to play 10 years ago (before the mash up era ruined that sort of thing by overkill of course). (JK)

DOORLY Digital Sat 28thShades Rave is going from strength to strength (see page 22), and this month they manage to steal a very busy Doorly away from the beautiful beaches of Ibiza and his jam packed schedule playing at Reclaim The Dancefloor and Ibiza Rocks. Tonight hell rock Digital with the Blah Blah Blah DJs for an evening resonating with his twitchy and unhinged remix style which has seen him rework tunes by MSTRKRFT, Groove Armada and Kanye West. The Shades godfather returns. (ZC)

  • JUDGE JULES The Honey Sat 28thAlthough we had a run-in with Judge Jules that has led us to finally give in to a long-held feeling that hes a cast iron fucking prick, theres no denying that this is a great booking for the Honey Club that ought to be absolutely roadblocked. The only thing is that now we cant say a nice word about him. Still, we thought you guys would want a heads up that hes in town since hes on Radio 1 and does the insanely popular Judgement Sundays in Ibiza. Have fun without us. (JK)

EVIL EDDIE RIcHARDSThe Honey Sat 28thTrace co-promoter of Londons Smartie Party with Claire used to do the percussion at the Mudd Club and Ministry of Sound, where he reckons they really knew how to party. Aiming to invoke the same hedonism they started their own nights, quickly heading back to the Ministry. And now, after 15 years, theyre here in Brighton, bringing their dancers, visuals and of course live percussion. Along for the ride is tech house pioneer Evil Eddie Richards, his first time at the Honey Club despite more than two decades of DJing. Hell be bringing a dash of the Clink Street acid house spirit. (JK)

DUBFIRE Audio Sun 29thFucking Dubfire! In Audio! As they say on the internet, OMG. Sure, getting Carl Cox and Digweed into a club as small as Audio was very impressive, but perhaps this is even more of a coup. The ex-Deep Dish legend has come on leaps and bounds since

winding up that partnership, both with his neo-techno productions and with his essential imprint Sci+Tec. Roadkill and Ribcage were both great bolts off the starting block but Rabid grabbed Best Minimal/Techno Track at the IDMAs recently too. Go and buy a ticket now. (JK)

STIcK IT ON 10TH BIRTHDAY ALL-DAYER King & Queen Sun 29thIn a city where club nights often change with the tides, its reassuring to see Stick It On reaching such an important milestone. This all-dayer sounds messy already. Everyone knows the concept of the thing you show up, give a few prized records from your collection a public airing, walk away smug that youve entertained the punters for a bit. Remember though, no one needs to hear the Grange Hill theme tune ever again. DJ Derek has his usual anticipated skanking slot, more guests will be announced soon. (NC)

FRIcTION Digital, Sunday 29thShogun Audio hosts their head man, Brighton-bred Friction. Propping up the bill are Nero, whove been shaking up both the dnb and dubstep scenes over the last couple of years with tunes like Act Like You Know and This Way featuring Alana, and Noisia whose Machine Gun EP got remixed by Spor, Amon Tobin and 16 Bit the latter rework being total sonic annihilation. Alix Perez, the North London young gun producing some of the most soulful drumnbass around also joins them. (ZC)

it on the two-for-one cocktails but

    w h e r e

other nights crash around in big balls of energy, BP is sexy and not too debauched. Theres a real energy to the drunkenness maybe its the high you get off cocktails, maybe its the pop-meets-house music policy. The added bonus of the terrace makes this a great summer session, with cool air to calm down all that dancing. Lads be warned, Bastard Pop is full of girls really full of them if you can deal with that. Ladies be warned, the mojitos can run out quickly. Apart from that, theres no complaints.

  • Purism is all well and good but things get more exciting when you mix them up, as Michael Morph has done on his ten-years-coming debut album. From his days selling gas door to door with Chris from Crazy P, to his move to Brighton from Nottingham hes bounced between techno, breaks and house often at the same time. His Something For The Weakened LP is goes from electro-rave to beautiful downtempo tracks without missing a beat

Dance music thrives on pigeonholing stuff, but your stuff isnt obvious. How do you describe it?I think the best way to describe it is all over the fucking place, but in a good way. Ive been told there is definitely some kind of vibe running through it, but I cant see it myself. Youve got to remember though, that this is my first album in 10 years of producing all kinds of music albeit intermittently so its kind of a summary of everything Ive been into in the last 10 years, dance music wise. How did the hook up with Yo Majesty come about? Deekline was doing a mix for me a while back, and he often gets a vocalist involved when being commissioned to do remixes, and asked if wed be interested in getting them on the track, and I was bang up for it because Id been caning their Club Action track. So he did the mix, got them to record a vocal for it from Florida; meanwhile I was doing another mix of the track myself,

and long story short, ended up fusing all the vocal from Deeklines mix with my own remix to form a brand new mega-hybrid track! Something For The Weakened is a clever title do you feel rave damaged? Not really; maybe a little rave weary sometimes? But thats the time to slap yourself round the face with some hot new music, which there is never a short supply of, regardless of what the doom-sayers would have us believe. They both have great dance cultures but whats the difference between Brighton and Nottingham?I lived in Notts for ten years but Im originally from Louth in Lincolnshire (big up). Brighton and Notts are similar in a lot of ways, like the people, which is why I stayed in Notts for ten years, and why I subsequently moved down here. Its nice not reading about shootings every couple of days, but then again,

Ive bought the Argus once in three years, and that was for the free World Cup wallchart.

Youve shared the stage with Plump DJs and Groove Armada what have been your most exciting gigs?Playing at Matter RIP last year was quite exciting, especially as I was following James Lavelle who was a big inspiration to me when I was teenager. Playing on the Glade

Stage at Glastonbury the first year they had it was very exciting for a 22 year-old.

Who have been supporters of your tracks?Quite a cross section. Laurent Garnier, Slam, James Lavelle, Groove Armada, Freq Nasty, Dave Spoon, Hyper for a start. A techno remix I did recently was even liked by Pete Tong. He used to officially start the weekend, but now I think he just carries Annie Macs headphones and does a bit after shes gone. Get Tongy back from 7pm. He shouldnt have to be up that late at his age. Whats next? A few remixes in the bag and on the go; next one out is Heavy Deviance Day To Day on Stop/Start Recordings. And a single with remixes, probably Lets Spend Money. Oh, and an album launch party next month, followed by a massive hangover.

  • FILM: ISOLATION(WITH LIVE SOUNDTRACK)Duke Of Yorks Sun 1stWhatever your views on whether we should be at war with the various peoples were currently rucking with, only the most callous have anything but respect and sympathy for the soldiers themselves. So, the fact that a quarter end up sleeping rough on their return to civvy street is a shocking and emotive subject, making Isolation a highly charged documentary from the off. The film is balanced with poetic photography and a more positive second half, but even before the live soundtrack from the director, this ought to leave a mark on you. (JK)

THEATRE: STEEL MAGNOLIASLittle Theatre Tues 3rd Sat 7thThe 1989 film version of this story of Louisiana women which sported a DVD cover with Julia Roberts doing her best impression of a bulldog chewing a wasp, Sally Field cackling like a housewife on the brink of breakdown and Dolly Parton donning a hairstyle Marty McFly might not fall for would hardly register in a video shop forage, let alone get rung up at the tills. The stage version is less hateful, more witty and tragic, confirmed by its recent successful debut on Broadway. (BM)

  • No ones a cowboy anymore. Kids dont re-enact gunfights at the OK Corral with cap guns and apart from a brief resurgence with Brokeback Mountain, you could be forgiven for thinking it had all gone forever. Well, like Clint himself, consider yourself unforgiven. There remains, deep in the heart of Texas, a generations-old tradition of cowboys, cow punchers, horse whisperers. These are professions whose fundamental disciplines remain as they were centuries ago, so unsurprisingly their practitioners are similarly unchanged from the iconic representations we grew up with.

London-based photographer Jane Hilton has had a longstanding love affair with rural America, culminating in this dramatic collection of 21st Century cowboy portraits. Away from the hackneyed lassos and spurs-in-the-sunset scenarios of traditional depictions, Hilton introduces something of a gender challenge in capturing her subjects in their most intimate surroundings their homes and bedrooms. Here the weatherbeaten harshness of their daily reality is juxtaposed against elegant soft furnishings and tender mementos of their own professional and cultural heritage. Its a stunning collection in terms of evocative portraiture, as well as a reassuring confirmation that despite the relentless march of progress, some things never change.

  • Pride is as much a Brighton institution as sticks of rock, and shares many of its delicious pink and sticky attributes. It should come as no surprise to newcomers to our fair city that the world-renowned gay capital of Britain hosts this definitive LGBT celebration twice a year, and that we do it so much better than anywhere else. The main emphasis has always been the parade and the party in the park, although there are many less high-octane events going on raising money, awareness and a sense of community in this, Prides 18th birthday year.

THE PARADEThis years theme is Pride And (No) Prejudice and sees 55 entries from local community groups, businesses and national companies, Sussex Police, the RAF and fire service as well as charities including the Terence Higgins Trust, MindOut and Brighton & Hove Switchboard. The floats will be joined by thousands of whistle-blowing individuals making the annual pilgrimage to the Pride Mecca of Preston Park. Setting off from Madeira Drive at 11am, the route snakes around town taking in the Kingsway, West Street, the Old Steine and London Road, with legions of spectators lining the streets along the way.

PARTY IN THE PARKPride regulars were dismayed at the end of the events relationship with Wild Fruit, but Revenge have pulled out all the stops to bring a top bill to suit all tastes. Local hero DJs The Freemasons, with Steve Pitron, headline the 5,000-capacity dance tent, with a live set from Cass Fox. For the locals, who apparently only make up half of Prides audience, we have more Brighton DJ talent including Dulcie Danger, John Byrne, Verity Mayes, Lee Harris, Jonesy and Richard Jones. For less nn-tss-nn-tss-nn-tss banging sounds theres a Revenge Pop Tent with alternative and indie from Boogaloo Stu, Fifilicious and Louise C and the Revenge Pop Allstars. All artists are performing without a fee to help keep Pride a free event, and the bars contractor Club Revenge are donating all profits to Pride and local university LGBT societies.

PRE-PARTIES AND AFTERSAs well as dancing the park into a dustbowl, there are loads of pre-Priders and after parties going on. Friday 6th brings Frockabilly and Grrrl Friday together for a night of 50s-style rocknroll with DJs and live music at the Latest MusicBar. Boogaluoo Stus back in action at the Brighton Ballroom on Saturday 7th for his famed Popkraft night, with sock puppetry and cabaret. The Marlborough has a huge weekend of totally free events including an all-day barbecue. Ignition is hosting a terrace after party at Legends, and Ohso Socials Dirty Sunset Disco brings some dirty electro house to Friday night. Revenge has a Kinky Dangerous Pride Night Special, The Volks plays host to Girls On Top and there are loads more events besides, check brightonpride.org for the full schedule.

Not the case with Absent Elk weve heard them on Jonathon Ross, Dermots a big fan after hosting a live session, and its not hard to work out why. EP: ILLNESS Gifts From God (STA)A band for whom the White Stripes famed sparse arrangement of vocal/guitar/drums was just a bit too busy, Illness steadfastly desist with vocal distraction entirely. What began as a half-finished-sounding band has evolved via just enough polish into an irresistible exercise in minimal riffola; rhythm and rage entwined in a powerful embrace. Its an arrangement that works perfectly over half a dozen songs, where the unmanned mic stand doesnt draw attention to itself at all. (NC)

  • DEMO: LOVEPARK (myspace.com/puritansuk)Formerly called Puritans, Lovepark have rebranded and are about to commence recording their first album. If this is the base material from which they hope to craft their lasting pop artefact, theyre in pretty good shape. The demos all carry themselves with a definite songwriting authority, and some studio assistance in placing the pleasing instrumentation around the mix should elevate the songs above the merely promising. Its upbeat, jaunty indie in the classic tradition and we look forward to seeing its inevitable ascension up the pop ladder. (NC)

ALBUM: MARYSIA BAND Sense (myspace.com/marysiaband)In the spirit of solidarno, SOURCE welcomes Critic submissions from all walks of our diverse cultural and ethnic mix. Heres a CD that meets the demands of Brightons Polish brethren (thats folk from Poland, not Mr Sheen and Pledge aficionados). Formed around vocalist Marysia Nowiska, the band have been punting their unique brand of Polish and Balkan jazz and folk at The Bradshaws pub, and this energetic CD, impenetrable lyrics aside, makes it all sound like a good night out. (NC)

COMIC: BEN NAYLOR Die Inbred Chav Scum Die! Die! ([email protected])Jesus, someone having a bad day. The illustrator and storyteller behind Geoff Half-Shark-Half-Octopus has swapped his gentle modern day whimsy for violent fantasy. After the last travelogue, this is England at its worst spitting in the street, Danny Dyer as a role model, talking in the cinema. Ben sees chavs as a plague, like zombies, that we need saving from. When its funny its very entertaining but theres an edge of the Daily Mail-reading bigot here. Still, Bens not claiming to be looking into the sociological situations regarding the nations underclass hes just really pissed off at the lack of manners around these days. Mind you, hes always been an old man at heart. (JK)

ALBUM: SILJE NES Opticks (FatCat )For this follow-up to Ames Room, Silje Nes appears to have imbibed some elixir of vocal confidence. Her utterly enchanting voice still works in tandem with a wide range of instruments and effects but has come more to the fore than competing as just another sonic component. The result is a far more song-based and vocal-led collection than before, mixing traditional backings with understated electronica to create a compelling album whose every texture is like reclining upon clouds. This is one for dimmed lights and intimate nights. (NC)

SAMPLER: VARIOUS: NUMBSKULL HQ Mission Drive (myspace.com/numbskullhq)Pitching themselves as an umbrella label dedicated to unearthing great local artists, Numbskull have indeed gathered some brilliant BN postcoded stuff here. A lot of it SOURCE is already familiar with; from the guitar genius of The Valentines and The Sarah Michelles (our personal tips for Radio One playlisting), to the louche summery loveliness of Jennie Cruse and Sparrow as well as the trad indie sounds of Villareal and Heliopause. Numbskull is a lazy major label A&R mans dream shut your eyes, stick a pin in the sleeve and keep your job for another year (NC)

SINGLE: SILVERMAN Cant Stand The Rain (One4Ho Records )As with most things, the most interesting things happening in the monolith of a genre that is dubstep are happening at the fringes. Where dubstep meets semi-techy electronica is where Silverman is honing his shadowy, sinister Bladerunner-esque beats. Using the mournful vocal and drip-drop sample from Ann Peebles track of the same name, the wobble in Cant Stand The Rain sounds like a massive industrial turbine in some torrential dystopian deluge. Dark, heavy and relentless. (MB)

FILM: TOM SANDS Brighton Die Sonfonie der Grostadt (Substantial)The symphony of the big city aims to celebrate Brightons cumulative charms, while contrasting the fortunes of typical city residents. A bin man works along London Road, a stressed computer worker bemoans the digital age, a bus driver wants to work in a caf because he hates driving and a busker works out her beer budget all furiously intercut with monolithic flat blocks and random street reportage, the unsettling direction and sound manipulation are sometimes quite Chris Morris Jam in tone. If theres any moral message its all a bit muddied but its nicely put together. (NC)

On the day that The Freebutt closed its doors to amplified live music we heard more shocking news. The Providence, longtime jumping off point for new BIMM bands, was closing and re-opening as Brightons 12th Tesco. This, added to the rumour that Wetherspoons had its eye on the large venue at the start of the North Laine, had us furious. Is Brighton replacing its culture with big business? Whos actually looking after the city?

In order to attract visitors with bulging wallets from outside of town, the city obviously needs to punch a decent weight with its retail offerings. Thats why Churchill Square was built a days shopping under one roof with an obvious chain store overspill into Western Road. Thats kind of fair enough, 250,000 people live here and even we need label goods from time to time. But when it starts to encroach on the areas whose individuality helped make the citys reputation, well, we start to get upset. Metro and Local-brand supermarkets, the high street enclaves of the out-of-town superstores, have long been making a march on the local retailer. The buying power of the PLC simply pummels the family-run corner shop into submission. This is a national disease of course, but Brightons culture and quirky outlets are as much a part of its character as dirty weekends, and we dont think enoughs being done to halt this so-called progress.

As rates and rents rise, the inexorable rise of inter-city homogenisation threatens every shop, cafe and pub on our streets. And with a supermarket on every corner, whos even going to bother going out to drink anymore? Venues such as the Pressure Point, Providence and Barfly could certainly be said to have suffered from the change in licensing laws, while a perceived lack of council support for the Ocean Rooms and the Freebutt certainly didnt help their particular fates. So venues close and shops fail, all parts of the Brighton landscape gone forever. And queuing up to fill their boots is an endless supply of big name retailers, sometimes so eager to snap up the local trade that they

dont even wait for proper planning permission before they open their doors. This is why Starbucks on St Jamess Street is apparently officially a shop rather than a caf council usage regulations for the premises protecting the streets other cafs seemingly meaning nothing.

But not everyone just lies down and takes it. Facebook has proved an invaluable tool in gathering support for protests against development, their organisers making impassioned pleas for reason on the TV news. The most vocal in recent times have been the urban gardeners on the proposed plot of Brightons 13th Tesco on Lewes Road. Despite Quaker covenants stipulating no alcohol could be sold or gambling take place upon it, in place since the land was first sold, planning permission for yet another Tesco (which would be literally next door to a Co-Op and opposite a Spar) and a betting shop seem to be railroading through local opposition.

This is happening all over, of course. Brighton shares many shops with Birmingham, Hove many with Huddersfield. But our charm as a city lies firmly in our diversity. Were unique and we want to stay that way. Its what brings people in from outside not the fact that weve got a couple of cheap Wetherspoons or a well-stocked Gap.

Some sort of legislative line in the sand clearly needs to be drawn, a line that the tide of corporate retail cant simply wash away. And this is where you come in. In researching this issue we went to great pains to get some solutions from the council. Try as we might we just couldnt get answers from Brightons councillors, our questions proving either too vague or too specific depending on whom we asked. We know who our MPs are Caroline Lucas was busy with the impending summer recess of Parliament and we kind of assumed wed get no joy from the Tories. But these are issues more pertinent to our ward councillors. Know who they are? Nor did we. In fact Brighton and Hove has 54 ward

councillors, spread across the major political parties, and theyre elected to look after your interests. In fact, theyre all hoping to get re-elected next May, and will presumably be doing all they can to end their anonymity with the electorate to get your cross on the ballot paper.

As a local magazine with Brighton and Hove at the heart of every word we print, SOURCE is making it our business to get some proper answers. We admittedly didnt get very far with our questions, but were on a massive mission to change that. Voter

apathy simply wont wash anymore. We want the young people of Brighton to help influence the outcome of these elections, and we want you to form the discussions on which theyre fought. This is our city by the sea, and the people in charge of it are about to come out of the woodwork, sniffing about for your vote. Lets make it a vote for Brighton, a vote for real, unique, diverse and proper fucking amazing Brighton. You run this city its time to step up.

  • So, is Brighton broken? Well, theres obviously plenty of sad stuff going on that makes us a bit depressed and weepy. But theres also loads of stuff about our city thats unique, inspiring and just plain downright ace. We stuck our hands up like spods in the SOURCE office and wrote these on the blackboard.

20 JAZZ FUNK GREATSEssentially, XXJFG is the best new music blog there is. For weirdo psyche disco or maverick nu-gaze, these guys have heard it, played it out and already blogged it before the acetate is even dry. Dont believe us? Check your favourite blogs blogroll. Youll find them there.

OUR BARTENDERS (ETC)Jesus, how cool are our waitress, barmen and shop assistants? Seemingly all hot or quirky ber-hip theyre working part-time while their blog/band/photography/art hits gold. Not only are they interesting and clever (and hot, did we mention that?) theyre also really good at their jobs.

THE BEACHYes its made of stones, but that sea air is enough to blow the cobwebs off anyone coming to town. Ultimately it doesnt matter about all the other things which make Brighton special because

hot long summer nights with friends, BBQs, drink and general merriment on the beach are what make life in Brighton all the more brilliant.

HAPPY HOUR AT THE BEES MOUTHWhoever said money cant buy you happiness obviously didnt have 7.50. Because that will buy you three bottles of fruity Belgian happiness from one of the hippest, most happenin jazz joints this side of the 1950s. Its 5.15pm on a Tuesday and were drunk. We love you Bees Mouth.

BEYOND RETROThe heart of the Lanes, yet a hidden treasure Beyond Retro takes you back to dressing up in your mums high heels and gladrags. Not just a vintage store, they often hold gigs for local bands and held a beautiful Alice In Wonderland tea party in March. See also To Be Worn Again and Wolf & Gypsy.

BIRD-CALL WHISTLE BLOKENo hungover Saturday would be complete without a wander through the Lanes, stuck behind what must be the hottest, stickiest man in Brighton. Clad from head to foot in tweed, carrying a massive sign, and making noises like a Robin on heat, this guy is an ambassador for the phrase does anyone ever buy this crap? but we love him anyway.

  • BOM-BANESThe quirkiest restaurant in town, theres probably no place that is such a labour of love. Interesting things happen in Bom-Banes from in-table entertainment to great live music and comedy. Arthur Brown and Stewart Lee have both played the cosy basement.

BRIGHTON BALLROOMThe Hanbury has had a tough time of it over the last few years but hopefully Proud Galleries can turn it around, having just bought it. Theyre doing great stuff in London so fingers crossed, and theyve saved another Brighton venue from closing. Just remember though, this is Brighton not London guys.

BRIGHTON LIVEThe mere fact that Brighton has enough bands to put on an annual festival of local acts is impressive enough, but that a group of people bother (most giving their time for nothing out of sheer belief in it) is great. Oh yeah, and its totally free. Result.

COMMUNIONIn terms of the bleeding edge of indie/nu-folk/whatever you want to call it, the So Darn So-run Communion is sufficiently below the radar to feel extra special, but so on the money that soon youll only be able to catch their bands in 10 headline slots.

CRANE KALMANThe exhibitions that Crane Kalman put on arent just good, theyre world class. If you want to see great photography it should be your first stop. And then get over to the North Laine Gallery to see the talented locals.

DAVES COMICSOf course they never cared anyway, but Daves Comics have been pushing graphic stories since long before they became fashionable. Not just the place for superheroes, they also have a great range of emotional stories from the likes of Daniel Cowes and Adrian Tomine.

DUKE OF YORKSTo quote film ber-critic Mark Kermode, Balcony sofas? Cor, you definitely would, wouldnt you? After years of sitting in childrens car seats in suburban warehouses, a glass of beer, a sofa, a beautifully projected flick, and the 100-year-old housing makes you realise just how good weve got it down here.

EDUCATIONBrighton University and City College are right in the heart of the city offering the students of Brighton the opportunity to develop themselves into the new stars of Brighton. Music, arts and design courses run by industry professionals and close links with local employees make this a very cool place to learn.

THE EVENING STARLoved by many its home to the best micro brewery in Brighton and has many award winning ales, as well as the widest selection of Belgian beers around. This is no gastro pub, if you look a bit too trendy or act obnoxiously a regular will shout, Theres no Fosters in here, sonny.

SAVE THE FREEBUTT CAMPAIGNOK, so it might have failed, but the swell of support for a venue in danger was impressive. Four thousand people signed the petition now if each of them

paid 5 thered be enough to carry out the soundproofing work. Hello? Anyone still there?

GARAGE STUDIOSDevoted to the art of photography, often within a commercial setting, no one is doing more for the discipline in Brighton than Kevin Mason and Matt Halls. Crucially they dont hide their craft, instead aiming to excite and help others by explaining the smoke and mirrors.

GEORGIAN ARCHITECTUREFollowing the construction of Prince Georges weekend party pad back in the late 1700s, the architects of the period knocked up a plethora of gorgeous, often beach-fronted housing. You can see the style, with its tall windows and corniced details, from Kemp Towns Sussex Square to Clifton Hill, to Brunswick Town.

HAND IN HANDSure there are a thousand quality boozers in Brighton, but how many of them actually brew their own

quality booze? The Kemptown (micro-)Brewery, as housed at the wonderfully teeny Hand In Hand pub, is somewhere you can genuinely try something new. Youll never drink Kronenbourg or Stella Artois again.

HANDMADE CO-OPA fine arts and skillful crafts shop with a socialist work ethic now thats something you dont see every day. They showcase the best local artisans creations, ranging from pretty and practical to standalone pieces. Theres really no excuse for buying someone a shoddy gift anymore.

HANOVER BEER FESTIVALFor an area of Brighton that has a quality boozer on every corner (almost literally try it if you dont believe us), the annual introduction of a big top, piled high with kegs of the most wonderful beers of every conceivable denomination and regional derivation, is some lovely icing on a well-stocked cake.

THE HYDRANTThe Hydrant, nee The Hare and Hounds, has become a new hub for live music. The venue proper upstairs sees Club Zygotic promotions putting on the most left-of-centre in alternative music; and downstairs you can often find some cheeky ska band playing at the bar.

WORK STARTING ON THE HIPPODROME Its going to cost nine million quid to sort out, but apparently the guys behind the Brixton Academy are ready to start work on this decaying venue. The Beatles and the Stones played there, you know.

  • INDEPENDENT LABELSIndependents have always found a home here; from the DIY label I Made This Records to established alt-folkers FatCat, hip hop soul from the mighty Tru Thoughts, or quirky pop-tronica mayhem from One Inch Badge. All of these started small and gained notoriety right here.

INDEPENDENT RECORD SHOPSWith most of the UKs indie record shops having bitten the dust, its good to see the likes of Rounder, Resident, Ape, Edgeworld and Rarekind bucking the national trend and flourishing by really knowing their market. You sure wont find Daptone 7s in HMV.

JUICE FM SPECIALIST SHOWSEvery city has its commercial radio stations, and for the most part they all play the same old chart fodder. Not Juice. Even a cursory glance through their long list of specialist shows reveals the kind of roster and playlists that 6Music would love to harvest.

CAROLINE LUCAS MPThe only Green MP in the whole bloody country, Caroline took the Brighton Pavilion ward by storm in the general election, an unprecedented victory for the party and a clear message to the rest of the country that Brighton doesnt do tactical voting, thanks very much.

MAMMOTHFESTThis group of promoters are hell-bent on supporting the Souths undernourished metal scene. Theyre hosting the first ever metal festival the South East has ever seen this September at Hoves town hall, aiming to put the city on the map as the South Easts metal Mecca.

MODERN TOSSIn the whole country theres no one better at sticking a prick into pomposity and the ridiculousness of life today. Brutally witty, theyve also developed a unique style that gets them into art galleries. And they did our ace cover this month.

MORGENMUFFEL ZINEAs Brighton Zinefest testifies, theres a wealth of people with something worth saying living here. A veteran of the scene is Morgenmuffel, an autobiographical zine chronicling the life and issues that are important to its author Isy. Covering punk, veganism, ecology and community, it makes for an insightful and entertaining read.

THE NORTH LAINEThis run of small boutique shops, cafs, bars, galleries and venues in the heart of the city is an essential microcosm of Brighton alternative, fiercely independent, hip, vibrant and varied, its Brighton in a nutshell.

NOT FOR RESALEIs there anyone in Brighton that has such a need for new music as Meatbreak and Fokkawolfe? Food, air, and demo tapes thats what they live on. Their next Penthouse night is on Friday 20th, or keep up with their almost-daily blog.
