Remarks from Fr. Michael

Dear Parishioners, August 2019 The month of August is very significant for us, Greek Orthodox Christians. We start with the holy period of Dekapentavgousto, the first 15 days of August, and we honor our Holy Virgin Mary, the Mother of our Lord with fasting the first fifteen days of the month, with a Paraklesis (Supplication) Service every evening, with Vespers on the Eve of the Dormition and with Divine Liturgy on the feastday on August 15th. We also celebrate on the 23rd of August the nine days of the Dormition as well as on Sunday which follows on August 25th in the Neohoriton Chapel in York with a celebration (panigyri). In August, we celebrate the Transfiguration of the Savior on August 6th while on the 29th we commemorate the beheading of the Holy Forerunner John, which is a day of strict fasting.

I will refer to the following two important projects which have highlighted the "beautification" of the House of God. With the grace of God, our Cathedral has completed the second phase of iconography and the placement of marble which looks dignified and distinguished.

1. The marble with the medallions now covers very tastefully the narthex, the main aisle of the nave and the space in front of the pews before the Solea. All the marble is beautifully arranged and decorated. I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart and express our deepest gratitude on behalf of our entire Parish, to Mr. Jimmy Papoutsis who offered the funds for this priceless work for our Cathedral. May our Good Lord give him health and sanctification.

2. The second phase of our Iconography consists of two icons of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel in the Narthex of the Church, where they appear to welcome us as we enter the Church. The Societies of Neohoriton and Evrytanian have agreed to donate them. May our Archangels protect the members of these Societies always with good health. In addition, there were iconographed four pots of flowers and high in the Narthex there is a Byzantine decoration that runs throughout the upper part.

Also, this phase of Iconography included Iconography in the Holy Altar. On the right, is the icon of the

empty Tomb of Christ with the Angel announcing the Resurrection of the Lord to the Myrrhbearing Women. There was also made Byzantine decoration In the arch. At the same time, the Apostle Peter was painted up the corner above the Chanters. In the middle of the Holy Altar and behind the Holy Altar Table the six Hierarchs were made with the Lamb(Christ) in the middle that is on the iconographed Holy Altar. A strip of Byzantine decoration separated the Hierarchs from the Mother of God. The blue color was highlighted throughout the circular wall of the Holy Altar and the symbols of the Holy Cross were made over the Prokomidi and also on the opposite side. In the arches a Byzantine decoration was placed. Everything is so beautiful.

Also, in the bottom part of the Hierarchs the Byzantine apron was made. High above, the Apostles were

made with the fiery tongues of Pentecost. On the other side, the three Hierarchs were placed as well as the First Martyr Stephen, while up High is the Hospitality of Abraham, which is the Byzantine icon of the Holy Trinity. The three Angels depict the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This icon is sponsored by the Philoptochos. Thank you very much! Also high in the corner, the Icon of Apostle Paul was iconographed. Again, in the arches a Byzantine decoration was placed.

For all of these icons to be iconographed so high, scaffolding was needed which was offered generously

by Athanasios Holevas with his son, Andreas. We are indebted to them with much gratitude. May the Holy

While the Icons of the Hospitality of Abraham and the Apostles Peter and Paul are sponsored, the rest of the icons are available for anyone to sponsor. Whoever would like to sponsor an icon that was made please contact me. My cell phone is 717-818-1160. Thank you very much. May our Triune God have glory, and the Saints may intercede for our salvation. Amen.

A NOTE FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL Dear Parishioners, I hope you are having a restful summer and that you remain safe no matter where your travels take you. I'd like to update you briefly on the projects that you see around our Church. The beauty of our church and its proper maintenance reflect our love for our Lord and the pride we have as a community. Thanks to a very generous donor, Mr. James Papoutsis, we have completed the recent addition of marble to the main aisle, the Narthex and the front of the church. The design for the handrails is being finalized and we hope to begin progress on that soon. We have also completed the next phase of our iconography project. The work for the iconography was also donated by dozens of generous parishioners. The results are breathtaking! We have had so many complements and positive feedback. I'd also like to thank the many committee members who made all of this possible including Fr. Michael Varvarelis, Nick Theofanis, Nick Mallios, Jimmy Senos, Helen Tzanis, Jimmy Orosz, Maria Nanis, John Harbilas and George Mallios. Our community is large and diverse. In just about every endeavor and every change we introduce, SOMEONE will think it is a bad idea or the wrong thing to do. I've heard from a few of you expressing your concerns about the changes. I want to communicate the priorities and direction for this current council.

For projects that enhance the beauty and aesthetics of our church (such as iconography and marble), we seek donors to pay for those projects directly. These projects generally do not come out of our operating funds, festival proceeds or endowments.

Our endowments and festival proceeds are reserved more for functional and maintenance projects such as roof repairs and replacements, parking lots, heating and air conditioning and so forth, as most donors are not typically interested in these types of projects.

For each and every major change, we will continue to communicate informally and seek approval in general assemblies. You have a voice. Use it by attending all of our general assembly meetings.

I hope this helps you understand better how your council makes these choices. I wish you and your families a blessed Dormition Fast Yours in Christ

George J. Spanos Parish Council President

VOTER ELIGIBILITY FOR PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS

In order to be eligible to vote in the Parish Council Elections, an individual must be a member in good standing of the Parish, as defined in the Uniform Parish Regulations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. In Chapter One, Article 18, Section 1, of these regulations, a parishioner in good standing is defined as: "Any person, eighteen years of age or over, who was baptized and chrismated according to the rites of the Orthodox Church and lives according to the tenets of the Orthodox faith." The Uniform Parish Regulations also provide that a member in good standing is one who has met his or her stewardship obligation to the Parish. Under Article VI, Section 1, of our Parish Bylaws, this stewardship obligation is defined as follows: "For purposes of voting in the annual election of Parish Council members, a parishioner in good standing is defined as any member of the Parish who submits a completed stewardship pledge card on or before the end of the Ecclesiastical Year, August 31, prior to the elections on the third Sunday in November of each calendar year." In addition, Article VI, Section 6, of the Parish Bylaws provides that "Absentee ballots shall be made available to parishioners who for physical or health reasons are unable to personally cast a ballot on the day of elections and who are otherwise able, competent, and eligible to vote." Requests for absentee ballots will be available in the church office.

Please remember that if you do not turn in a pledge card, you are NOT eligible to vote in the Fall elections for Parish Council,

NOR are you able to run as a candidate. August 31, 2019 is the deadline to submit your stewardship pledge card.

THE SOURCE AUGUST 2019 Page 12 HOLY TRINITY BOOKS & GIFTS

We want to thank everyone who visited the bookstore during the past year. Your patronage has enabled us to thrive and support our parish. We had a wonderful Greekfest. We met a large number of people; selling them items from the bookstore and sharing our faith with them. It was a wonderful experience. Jim and Kiki want to wish everyone safe travels and have a wonderful summer.

The bookstore has a large selection of items. We provide icons, censers, charcoal and incense for your household use. All proceeds from the bookstore either go directly back into the bookstore or into the parish. We have a selection of CD’s that Father Michael picked up this summer. We are also constantly adding new book titles to our excellent collection of Orthodox books for adults and children. We can also special-order books, icons and other items that are not normally stocked in the bookstore. We also order icons and other items from the Holy Protection Monastery when needed.

We have the wine that is used for communion available for purchase and donation to Father Michael for use during communion. We recently added bottles of light olive oil that can be donated to Father for the altar vigil light. We also carry a burial cloth (Σαβανο) that has been blessed in Jerusalem at the tomb of Christ. This can be used for funerals.

Holy Trinity Books and Gifts’ normal operating hours are following the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, and the day when the Sts. Joachim and Anna Society meet from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. For more information or special requests, contact Jim and Kiki Lloyd (email: [email protected] or call 717-507-0003.

LADIES’ BEREAVEMENT GROUP

This group meets once a month on a Thursday. Our next gathering will be held on Thursday, September 19th at 11:30am. We speak on different topics that concern the group and discuss ways to cope with grief. Please consider coming. We pray you are enjoying a Safe and Relaxing Summer.

CONCERNED MOTHERS GROUP

The goal of the group is to foster spiritual dialogue among mothers in our community in regards to raising our children in an Orthodox Christian home. We can all probably list many challenges we have faced as our children have journeyed through preschool to high school. The topics of the group will focus on making Orthodoxy a practical, living experience in our daily lives. Father Michael is leading the group. We meet in the Library monthly. Have a safe summer with your families and will meet again in September.

FatherMichael’sMonthlyReport–June11th

1. Iconography – We are finishing by Thursday of this week the 2nd phase of Iconography in the Cathedral. I

believe, along with you, that only compliments have been heard from our Parishioners and visitors. The

Iconographer placed the Icons, restored some and made the Holy Altar look spectacular. This is an outstanding

Byzantine Iconography that is making our Cathedral look very special. The descent to Hades Icon had

problems. You could see through the hole which was above the head of Christ. The Iconographer fixed it and

then he also refreshed the surroundings of the Icon. On the top, of the sides of the main Church, the part that is

inside the Holy Altar he has placed from one side and the other Sts. Peter and Paul. What I was thinking and

have suggested for the future, is to ask our people to find out the Saints from their locality (Village, Town, City,

Province) and have them iconographed in our Cathedral.

2. SundaySchoolGraduation on Sunday, June 2nd. After the Divine Liturgy, Bibles were handed out to all the

High School Graduates and a book “Greek Traditions and Customs in America” given to the College/University

Graduates. Also, we had one graduate for his PhD and he received an icon of the Holy Unmercenaries Kosmas

and Damian.

FatherMichael’sMonthlyReport–July9th

I will ask the Community to help sponsor a beautiful Omophorion and Epitrahilion for His All Holiness as a gift from our Cathedral.

8. EcclesiasticalItems: I have also seen in Greece some beautiful items for our Cathedral. A. Christ (Archpriest)

for the Royal Doors, B. folder for the Antimention on the Holy Altar. C. Banners that say Χριστός Ανέστη(Christ is risen) and Αληθώς Ανέστη(truly He is risen). D)Carpet runners with the two-headed Byzantine Eagle for the Holy Altar.

Loucas, Supreme Secretary George Horiates(now the Supreme President), Supreme Governor George Papaspyrou, District Governor Charles Mackenzie, District Marshal Dr. Billys, and District Warden Megoulas. Supreme President Loucas adminstered the 'Oaths and Initiations' to all our 12 approved candidates....Congratulations and BRAVO....!!! The 87th District #4 Convention was a great honor for our fraternity of AHEPA Chapter #64 and will never be forgotten, as much was accomplished at this wonderfully prepared affair. Brother David Vincent Bobb of our own Chapter #64 presented his movie 'RIGHT BEFORE YOUR EYES' early on Saturday morning June 8th. This movie already has gained 17 nominations and has reaped 6 awards including those for best Producer/Director at the many nationwide film festivals he's been invited to attend. Brother Dr. Zissis Chroneos also presented the update on the co-sponsored AHEPA Chapter #64/Holy Trinity Cathedral Cooley’s Anemia Education/Screening Project which is well underway.

The newly initiated Power District #4 Lodge was sworn-in by the new Supreme President George Horiates at the 87th District Convention. All Officers were nominated and approved to serve a second consecutive term, as the previous year had been so successful. Next year’s convention will take place in Baltimore, Maryland as Districts #3 and #4 will be combined. This should be a very productive and festive event. Times and Dated will be provided at a later date.

AHEPA Chapter #64 will continue to sponsor many dinner-meetings, along with the philanthropic efforts including Cooley’s Anemia, Service Dogs, Bethesda Mission, Food for the Needy, and the Prokop/Vladyka Scholarships. The Chapter #64 fraternal membership is wishing tremendous success for the coming year, while working hand-in-hand with the Holy Trinity Cathedral leaders and parishioners. Respectfully submitted, Dr. Michael Billys, Ed.D Chairman of Membership, Fund-Raising, and Sick Committee Chaplain and Corresponding Secretary of Chapter #64 Harrisburg, PA District Marshal of Power District #4 [email protected] (717) 856-2553

HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH

1000 Yverdon Drive Camp Hill, PA 17011

ADVERTISING IN THE SOURCE In an effort to contain printing costs for monthly newsletters, many churches have turned to paid

advertisements in their publications. Parish Council has agreed to adopt this funding source for our monthly publication. Doing this would help lessen and possibly erase the expense of publishing the Source.

We now have availability for two pages of paid ads in our monthly Source. The ad price will represent a year of advertising or 11 issues as we combine the August and July Source into one issue. Ads are sold by the block. There will be room for 24 ads or blocks per page. You may purchase more than one block for increased space and presentation. The cost of one ad block is $125 per year, and subsequent blocks would be an additional $100 per block. For example, a business card ad would equal two blocks and would cost $225. Camera-ready ads are appreciated but not required.

Please help us promote this program. If you own or work for a business that may be interested in advertising in our Source which is sent out to over 600 families, please contact Mary in the church office. If you know of a business that may be a potential advertiser, please pass on a contact and phone number. Examples of businesses that may be interested in advertising could be Greek bands, importers, baptismal supplies/clothing stores, and jewelers specializing in crosses. Other possibilities could be lawyers, accountants, real estate agents, etc. The only ads we cannot accept are ones pertaining to credit cards, travel, or insurance.

Please contact the church office as soon as possible if interested in this program.
