Oct 1 2011 Desired qualification level:

Portage Home Visitor

Closing Date:

2 hours per week. Term time only. Plus fortnightly meetings for 2 hours on a Wednesday morning.

Voluntary position

The Portage and Befriending programme has been working with children, young people and families in Brighton and Hove for 28 years. We provide a home visiting service and work jointly with parents and carers of disabled children aged 6 months to 5 years, to help children develop and reach their potential.

You will be supporting parents at a challenging time in their lives so good interpersonal skills and sensitive listening skills are essential. Experience with small children is also essential, either as a parent yourself or through your work, training, or experience in a voluntary capacity. Some of our Home Visitors are themselves parents of children with special needs. You will visit one family on a regular day and time each week. The home visit consists of some structured teaching, some child-led play, and some time to focus on progress and any concerns. The structured element of the teaching is always designed to be play-based and fun: and activity, which the family can practise and enjoy together on the day between Portage visits. Progress is usually recorded on a chart.

All Home Visitors attend fortnightly team meetings to discuss progress and ideas for future activities, as well as any difficulties. The team meetings are held in Hangleton Community Centre, where the Portage and Befriending Service has its office. All volunteers are required to attend our 3 day training course followed by safeguarding training. The next course will be run on 30th June, 1st & 4th July.

For an information pack, contact the Portage Service on 01273-749085 or by email: [email protected]
