Hearty Voices ScotlandHelping you to have your say

Are you living with a cardiac illness, or do you know someone who is? Do you want tomake sure that your views on health services are heard?

Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS) have been delivering Hearty Voices Scotland, inpartnership with The British Heart Foundation (BHF) for the last five years. The projectwhich has also been running successfully in England and Wales since 2002, aims toprovide patients & carers with the skills and confidence to have their voices heardacross the healthcare system in Scotland.

The Hearty Voices Scotland project aims to provide this support for representing issueswhich are important to cardiac patients and their carers.

The project has four main aims;• To develop a network of cardiac patient/carer representatives who will receive

regular newsletters, containing project updates, details of opportunities to getinvolved & information about training events.

• Provide people affected with cardiac conditions and their families with the skills andconfidence to work with the NHS to improve local services.

• Empower patients and carers by giving them access to information, training andsupport.

• To encourage partnership working between the NHS bodies & the patient/carernetwork.

Find out more about Hearty Voices Scotland by [email protected] or call 0131 225 6963

Alternatively visit the “Have your say” section of our website www.chss.org.uk

Ann Clark, 40 years old and happily married with two kids tells us herstory.“I have lived in Clacks all my life. I started off working in the textileindustry, that is sadly no longer there. I now work full time for Tesco as afresh manager. Brought up in the mar policies now living in Fishcross. Ihave lived with high blood pressure for 23 years, at 17 years old (well amonth before I turned 18) my blood pressure went too high, reachingdangerous levels, causing me to have a stroke.

I joined Braveheart to see if I can help anyone in a similar situation that I have been in, Ialready find it rewarding & met lots of great people with lots of knowledge & tons ofpatience & are great sounding boards.I am a mentor for Braveheart & a walk leader. On a recent walk with Braveheart I was speaking to a lady in her mid 50’s she asked mewhy I came to Braveheart & I told her my story. She turned around to me with a strangelook on her face and said “I was feeling sorry for myself this morning. I had a few aches& pains, I was not going to come today, I was saying to myself why me at this age whenI'm just ready to retire & enjoy my life”. Then I spoke to you & now I think differently, Ihave had a extra 30 years of good health & feel a bit selfish for feeling the way I did thismorning. Did you ever think why me? I said “yeah I did then I thought why not me? I’mnot any different from anyone else. I have learned so much from this happening to me, Ideal with stress differently & I have a different attitude to life & know my limits & don’tpush pass them. She then replied. I am so glad I came along today, you have inspiredme so much. You have a positive attitude to all of this & turned your illness into a positiveinfluence. I will now come back and now look at life different too.”

Xmas RaffleThe Braveheart Xmas raffle which raisedthe sum of £638 was won by Jen Lucas whois secretary to Mr McManners in themaxillofacial Department in FDRI. Onhearing the news Jen said she was highlydelighted with her unexpected prize. It hasbeen a few years since Jen and husbandRichard have been to St Andrews and bothare looking forward to an enjoyable break.Let’s hope they have a great time and thatthe weather is favourable for them to takea walk along the beach and explore thesurrounding area.Braveheart will be hosting a CoffeeMorning and Bake Sale on 15th May from10am till 3pm at St Modans Church Hall inFalkirk Town Centre

giftaid itWe’re delighted that Braveheart is nowregistered with the Inland Revenue forGift Aid.

This Gift Aid Scheme was introduced in1990 as a way for people who pay tax inthe UK to donate to charities in a taxeffective manner.

In reality this means that, for any moneydonated to Braveheart by an individualwho pays tax in the UK, we can claimthe tax they have paid

Our Gift aid registration means that adonation to Braveheart can now beworth more, for example

• if John Smith donates £20 a month toBraveheart – his monthly donation tous is now worth £25

• if Jean Smith decides to donate her40th birthday money to charity – her£150 thanks to Gift Aid is now worth£187.50

So you can see this could make a realdifference to Braveheart’s income – allthat’s required is for the donor to be aUK tax payer and to fill in a form withtheir contact details.

This form of giving is designed to beextremely easy and stress free for thedonors– honestly !!

Any questions - pleasegive me a ring.

Coffee MorningBraveheart will be hosting a Coffee Morning

Braveheart is running an exciting fund-raising venture, giving you the chance of winning a cash prize every month. This scheme raises vital funds for Bravehearts work and it gives you a chance of winning your money back each month - and more! Your interest in Braveheart, and your support, is greatly appreciated and we hope you will want to take part in this fun fund-raising scheme. The Braveheart 200 Club will begin on 5th April 2010.

The PlanUp to 200 people buy one or more ‘shares’ per year. Half the total sum raised goes to Braveheart and the other half is distributed on a monthly basis to winning ‘shareholders’ whose share numbers have been drawn.

Membership The cost of each yearly share is £12 - £1 for each month. Shareholders may hold more than one share.

Shares Each share will be numbered and that number will belong to the member to whom it is allocated for as long as he or she is a paid-up member of the 200 Club.

Prize DrawAll share numbers are included in each monthly draw. The draw will be made monthly by at least two members of the Braveheart Management Committee. Prize money will depend on the number of paid-up shareholders that month.

Example

Income from 200 shares @ £12 per share : £2,400Monthly prizes (1st prize £50, 2nd prize £30, 3rd prize £20) x 12 monthly draws : £1,200Profit for Braveheart : £1,200 If fewer than 200 shares are taken up these figures will be adjusted proportionately.
