BRAINSTORMING
MEETINGParliamentarians’ Advocacy for MDGs
6-7 November 2007 o Bangkok, Thailand
The international commitment to achieve the Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs) by 2015 has been reaffi rmed by all Member States of the United Nations.
While developing countries have adopted national plans to realise the MDGs,
developed countries have committed to increasing ODA by USD 50 billion by
2010. Achieving and exceeding the MDGs require strong political will from national
leaders. Simultaneously, citizen participation is a prerequisite for developing and
developed countries to fulfi l their pledges.
In line with the mandate to support citizens in their efforts to hold governments to
account for the achievement of the MDGs, the United Nations Millennium Campaign
Asia-Pacifi c works throughout the region with citizens across six constituencies
– civil society organizations, parliamentarians, local authorities, youth, media and
the private sector. In 2007, the Campaign has focused its work on MDGs 1–7
primarily in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan and the Philippines.
Furthermore, the Campaign has prioritized MDG 8 in Australia, Japan and the
Republic of Korea, focusing on trade justice, debt cancellation as well as a major
increase in the quantity and quality of aid and fi nancing for development.
One of the key elements for development is accountable and transparent
governance. The United Nations Millennium Campaign recognises the role of
parliaments in promoting governance that creates an enabling environment
for the achievement of the MDGs. In practice, parliamentarians and elected
representatives at various levels are signifi cant components of national governance
systems. They play a critical role in enhancing oversight, representation and
accountability.
