We have a 100% record
against our visitors
from Ivybridge – we
have lost all of our
three encounters so far. In the
first part of the new millennium,
I suppose one would describe
Ivybridge as a solid level 7 side
hovering around mid table in
WCW before gaining promotion
to SW1W at the end of that first
decade. They got knocked back
down after a couple of seasons.
However, after a further two of
seasons catching their breath,
somebody must have put
something in the water flowing
off the moor behind them
because they gained promotion
in two successive seasons, the
second courtesy of an away win
against Towcestrians, and hence
our encounter with them last
season. The first game at Cross-
in-Hand was a close affair but the
‘Bridgers’ seemed to enjoy the
wide expanse of Chapel Gate as
they ran in six tries against us in
the return fixture. They did much
the same when we visited them
back in October. Now lying third in
the division, equal on points with
Dings Crusaders, they are making
quite a fist of vying for promotion
for the third time in four seasons.
However we are fast coming into
this intriguing mix. It is entirely
possible that we could leapfrog
both of them and by virtue of a
superior points difference could
go second. Now there’s a thing.
I bet you weren’t thinking of
that back at the beginning of
December. So a fascinating match
in prospect today. Two sides, who I
firmly believe wish to play an open
style of running rugby, playing for
big stakes make for an intriguing
match this afternoon and an
enjoyable one or us spectators.
Thus it gives us great pleasure to
offer a warm welcome to chairman
Jim Burns and the rest of the
Ivybridge party to Chapel Gate on
what promises to be a pleasantly
mild afternoon.
On an unfamiliar surface at
Hornets last week, Adam Davies
established a new record of four
drop goals in a season which is
also equal to the career record
set by Jon Santy in 1993/4. Wyn
Roberts equalled a club record,
held by James Flynn (twice) and
Sam Yarwood, by scoring his third
hat-trick of the season. Wyn is also
on the verge of scoring 100 points
for the second successive season.
Dan Stewart, who joined us from
Ellingham & Ringwood this season,
grabbed his chance offered by his
first start and scored at Hornets. I
am glad Simon Carlton captured
the moment for posterity as
witnessed on today’s front cover.
Our referee this afternoon is
Adam Wookey taking charge of his
second game for us this season.
Adam was also in charge of that
oh so close encounter against
Camborne back in November. The
referee adviser, Simon Thomas
can’t get away from us. He was at
Hornets last weekend advising a
new referee on the circuit, Henry
Lowis, but, as always, we offer
Simon a warm welcome with the
hope both he and Adam enjoy
their afternoon with us.
It is with much sadness that we
have to record the death of Nigel
Brown on Sunday, 5 February. He
played prop for the 1st XV back
in the 50s and 60s and playing
with him was one of my earliest
memories at Bournemouth. In
later years, Nigel had been a loyal
supporter and had always taken a
keen interest in the fortunes of the
club, although illness over the past
few months meant he has been
unable to come recently. We offer
his wife Christine and their family
our sincere condolences.

Ivybridge
Formed 41 years ago in November
1975, Ivybridge Rugby Football
Club has had as its prime objective:
‘To Provide Rugby Union Football for
all to the highest standards possible
at minimum cost to the players’.
Only through the support of the
Club members and associates
of our great Club can this be
achieved.
From our very first senior side,
together with their partners,
the club has always had a family
atmosphere. We started playing on
the Community colleges pitches
and using their changing facilities
with after match celebrations
taking place in the back rooms of
local hostelries. After a few years
of hard graft raising funds through
anything from cake stalls to three-
day summer fairs we managed to
raise sufficient monies to purchase
the ground at Cross-in-Hand.
Having the land was one thing
but we needed our own base.
Someone heard that the MOD was
to upgrade the accommodation
blocks at HMS Raleigh and the
old war time huts were to be
sold off. Before long we were

on the Torpoint ferry with two
tractors and trailers bringing very
precarious loads across the Tamar
to re-erect as our own Club House.
This Wooden Hut was to be our
home for ten years.
During this time it hosted some
very famous Rugby personnel
including John Pullen (England
hooker) who officially opened the
club house, Mike Davis (England
coach 1981), Graham Dawe and
Gerry Guscott who supported
our mini presentation days.
Then of course there was Jethro
who visited us on more than
one occasion and was heard to
comment on our facilities in his
own eloquent way as ‘You got a f--
----g lovely shed eer’. Good times
were had by all.
As the Club grew stronger and
much larger with the birth of the
mini rugby section in 1986 the
facilities were getting too small.
We built two new changing rooms
and started to plan for the future.
Again the fund raising endeavours
were increased and with the help
of Lottery funding and other
grants and loans we were able
to commission the building of
the New Club House which was
completed in 1998.
We currently field three senior
XVs with the occasional Vets XV.
We also support very good Colts
XV, which is deemed to be one of
the strongest in the area. Junior
and Mini rugby has developed and
flourished over the years and has
become one of if not the strongest
junior organizations within the
South West. Ages range from six
to sixteen with qualified coaches
to help develop good rugby skills
and oversee the training sessions.
A number of youngsters have
passed through the Ivybridge
coaching regime and, coupled
with excellent coaching at the
community college, have gone
on to represent at schools, County,
National and International levels.
Some are now playing for premier
division clubs.
Going also from strength to
strength is our newly formed
ladies side already competing with
other local sides.

Man of the Match Sponsor
That’s the spirit
Adam WookeyOur Referee Today
This is Adam’s second
season on the South West
Group. He originates from
Amesbury near Stonehenge
and played for Salisbury
for 14 seasons but had to
stop playing due to a back
injury. He runs the U18
competition in his home
county. He moved and
bought a house in Yeovil two
years ago to be closer to
employment where he helps
builds the Lynx, Wildcat
and Apache helicopters for
AgustaWestland. This is
currently his sixth season of
refereeing. Adam hopes to
establish himself at Group
level, move on to panel
and referee a game at the
Principality Stadium or
Twickenham.
Abuse of Match OfficialsMembers and supporters please remember the rulings from the RFU regarding abuse
directed at match officials. It is totally unacceptable and could result in the Club having League points deducted. It is also a matter of common courtesy. Spectators
are also reminded they must remain behind the perimeter fence at all times.
Thank you.
