IN YOUR PROGRAMME TODAY

WELCOME TO BOURNEMOUTH RUGBY BOURNEMOUTH-RUGBY.CO.UK#LIONSROAR

As can be seen from the league table elsewhere in the programme our visitors today, Lydney, are having a torrid time this season and have yet to win ‘on the road’. I know I am being uncharitable but I hope they don’t break their duck this afternoon. For certain we will be doing are damnedest to make sure they don’t. Nonetheless we offer a warm welcome to president Derek Pomeroy and the remainder of the Lydney party.

We had an excellent win at Exmouth last week, their first home defeat of the season. Making his league debut was Harry Davis who made a scoring debut in the Hampshire Cup match at Tottonians the week before so he will be ‘on show’ for the first time at home today. Presently we lie sixth but only three points cover the four places, third to sixth. So all very tight.

I mentioned the Hampshire Cup and I offer a word or two of explanation. First of all we are disqualified from competing in the Dorset & Wilts Senior Cup because of where we are in the league. So we approached Hampshire, they said ‘welcome’ and, as a consequence, we are competing in the Hampshire Cup for the first time since 1975. In April 1974 we beat Trojans to become the first non-services side to win the Hampshire. When we last competed in 1974/5, we lost to Havant in the final. Subsequently we won the Dorset & Wilts Cup to become only the second club in the land to have their name on two county cups. Can’t remember who the other side is. Having beaten Tottonians in the quarter-final, we host Winchester in the semi-final on November 18.

Talking of hosting, the D&W U20s took on the Royal Navy U23s in a championship ‘warm up’ game at Chapel Gate last Sunday afternoon. In a game against a robust side, where they were ‘under the cosh’ for long periods, especially in the first half, they prevailed, having held them to 7-all at half-time, with a super second half performance to win 24-14.

Our referee this afternoon is Kevin Williams, taking charge of his fifth game for us. His mentor is also another regular visitor to Chapel Gate, Brian Wright, and we offer them both a warm welcome to Chapel Gate and hope they enjoy their visit.

Can I also offer a warm welcome to all you supporters this afternoon. From the forecast you may well need something warm.

MATCH DAY SPONSORS BOURNEMOUTH-RUGBY.CO.UK#LIONSROAR

It turns out that there’s a little bit more to Grosvenor Casinos than just Black Jack tables and Roulette. We wanted to learn more about this exciting venue in the heart of Bournemouth so we interviewed Sales & Events Manager and Rugby Fan Molly McWeeny.

MOLLY – HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH BOURNEMOUTH RUGBY?

As a brand aligned with sporting excellence, we’ve always championed national and local sport and are thrilled to be partnering with sport in our local community via Bournemouth Rugby.

Bournemouth Rugby are passionate and driven with lots of hard-working players and staff who also benefit from local companies’ involvement to assist with facilities, kit, promotion and events. We hope we can help them achieve their full potential and wish them the best of luck for the busy season ahead!

Grosvenor Bournemouth wanted to get involved on a local level, become an ambassador, showcase local rugby to our customers, plus

become a player sponsor for James Greasser. Our passion for sport along with our Sports Lounge facilities offer a great place for sports fans to watch all the big events throughout the season. We hope we can also bring some fun activities and events for the over 18’s teams and members and look forward to keeping up to date with the seasons matches!

MOLLY – WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST IN THIS NEW RUGBY SEASON?

We’re looking forward to connecting with Bournemouth Rugby and their partners, getting to know the team and work with them to be part of their success within the game and the local community.

Many of our customers are avid sports fans and to be able to offer them a connection to Bournemouth Rugby along with match day hospitality is great. We hope we can introduce rugby to many of our customers this season, not only nationally but now locally too.

Lydney RFC was founded in 1888, when there were already eight teams playing in the town.

The club drew its strength and many of its players from the local tinplate works and, for many years, Lydney RFC were known as the ‘Tinplaters’. The first President, Charles Bathurst, later the first Lord Bledisloe, held the position for 70 years. Lord Bledisloe became Governor General of New Zealand in the 1930s and gave his name to the Bledisloe Cup, the Rugby Union trophy competed for by Australia and New Zealand to this day.

There is still a strong connection between Lydney and New Zealand, especially the Waikato Province, and there is a regular exchange of players between Lydney and Waikato clubs.

For a town with a population which has only recently exceeded 10,000, Lydney has more than held its own against clubs from bigger towns, and has a great record in the national knock out cup, playing Saracens, Sale and Exeter Chiefs in recent years. They have not been out of the National Leagues since the league system started until recent times.

In the last 40 years or so Lydney has produced internationals such as Chris Williams, Gordon Sargent, Bev Dovey, Trevor Wintle and Peter Kingston.

The above was taken from the Lydney website and is a mere fraction of a wonderfully full and detailed history of the club for which I have no where enough room to reproduce here although I am sure people would be interested in the history of the Bledisloe Cup. Suffice for me to say that we played Lydney before the advent of the leagues when we had four games against them in the mid ’70s, three on the Saturday at Easter. Was the Aust ferry still running then lads? The first, however, was at the beginning of September 1973 when we may well have been on one of our pre-season tours. We managed to win one of those four games but Lydney would have represented formidable opposition for us in those days.

JOE REESCAPTAIN

Joe Rees received man of the match in a nail biting battle against Dings Crusaders on 7th October. Joe previously played for Sandown Shanklin RFC, until he joined Bournemouth. His aim was to step-up to the national standard and also had a couple mates who played in the team. When asked what do you like about the club Joe’s response was “Great family atmosphere and the boys are a really close bunch”.

Head coach Will Croker claimed Bournemouth’s Hampshire Cup quarter-final victory over Tottonians showcased the strength in depth at the club.

Lions made a host of changes for the last-eight encounter, resting key names from their regular South West Premier line-up.

But that did not stop the Chapel Gate club surging to a mammoth 58-25 victory over their London One South counterparts.

Bournemouth handed first XV debuts to the likes of Conrad Carkeet, Max Cheater, Harry Davis, Danny Kirkpatrick, Joe O’Hehir, Johnny O’Hehir and Jack Palmer for the cup clash.

Davis and Cheater also recorded their maiden scores for the first team.

Croker told the Daily Echo recently... “Every week I get phone calls or text messages from guys who are in the seconds or the thirds saying ‘what do I have to do to get up a team?. It’s one of the hardest parts of my job.”

“We were able to look at some people in terms of new guys to us, but also in terms of different positions.

“Johnny and Joe O’Hehir have been very impressive since they joined.

“Joe Gwyther was on the bench. He came on and did a really good job of settling things down and putting us in the right areas in the pitch.

“Harry Davis is a really talented youngster, he has a huge amount of potential. In the forwards, Adam McDonald played very well.”

Lions held an 18-10 half-time advantage before putting on 40 points during the second period to book their place in the last four.

Croker added: “Any team which doesn’t have Sam Hardcastle, Richard Sharp, Jack Hennings, Joe Rees, Scott Chislett, Wyn Roberts, Adam Davies and Freddie Gleadowe playing – there are some big names missing.

“We knew we were putting together different

HAMSPHIRE CUP SUCCESS - LIONS SET FOR SEMI FINAL BATTLE partnerships and different combinations, so it did take us just a little bit of time to gel.

“We built up a fairly nice lead and let them come back into it either side of half-time. But then we re-established our clinical edge and pulled away towards the end.

“It took us a little bit of time but, once we got there, we were able to break them down and progress.”

Bournemouth will host London Two South West outfit Winchester in the semi-finals on Saturday, November 18.

“No matter what sport it is in, everyone loves a cup run,” the head coach said.

“It’s exciting and you want to be involved in it.“We want to get through, of course. We don’t want to take it so blithely that it doesn’t matter if we get knocked out.

“But at the same time, it does give us a chance to look at some guys who are banging on the door.”

OUR PROUD HISTORY

#BMTH125 #HISTORY #LIONSPRIDE

Over the next few editions we delve into our history archives of Bournemouth Rugby. The clubs past has formed our success as a club today and the values we hold. I hope you enjoy some of the lighter stories from our early days.

It is believed that the Club first played in 1888, one of the main fixtures being Downton; the journey, by horses and traps, was enlivenedon one occasion by one trap arriving with half the side who duly changed at the Bull Inn together with the Downton side. While waiting for therest of the Bournemouth side to arrive, they proceeded to consume liquid refreshment to such an extent that, by the time the others arrived following a breakdown, Downton and half the Bournemouth side were quite incapable of taking the field. The difficulties of transport and the dearth of nearby fixtures were obstacles that even the most enthusiastic could not overcome and gradually the Club’s activities ceased.

During 1893 another Bournemouth club was formed, the home matches being played at Dean Park and their colours being a blue jersey with a broad white hoop and dark blue shorts. The main

fixtures being against Trojans, Portsmouth and Sherborne School. Transport was usually by train. Once again the difficulty of arranging nearby fixtures caused a lapse of several years before the club was restarted by a Major LangleyTaylor in 1906.

The club continued playing for some three seasons with fixtures against the Trojans, Castle Carey, Sherborne School and a Dorchester and District XV. A photograph of the teams in a match against the latter side in 1909 has been presented to the Club by Capt F G Box, the scrum-half at the time. The colours were then large red and white hoops. Once again, transport difficulties and lack of support caused failure. However, during the 1914–18 War a New Zealand Forces XV played rugby football in Meyrick Park.

In 1923 the Bournemouth Sports Club started a team, playing at Iford, the colours being green and white hoops. Sadly, this was not a financial success so the majority of the players formed the Bournemouth RFC with Meyrick Park as their home ground.
