WELCOME TO BOURNEMOUTH RUGBY BOURNEMOUTH-RUGBY.CO.UK#LIONSROAR

Much as I said of our last visitors to Chapel Gate, Lydney, Hornets are having a torrid time this season and are lying bottom of the table. In the three seasons we have been playing each other, the record is pretty even, won 3, lost 3 and a 13 points advantage to Hornets. Ironically, both sides have lost twice at home. Why this season has been such a struggle I don’t know having maintained a perfectly respectable mid-table position in their three years at this level.

However, having suffered a heavy loss at their hands we entertained them October last year we had better be on our guard this afternoon whatever the table might say. What I can say is ‘welcome’ to president Paul Davidson and the remainder of the Hornets party to Chapel Gate with the hope they enjoy their afternoon with us.

Last week we travelled to Ivybridge where we won at Cross-in-Hand for the first time in the three seasons we have been playing them by virtue of having scored not that many more points than them in a 90-point thriller. Great entertainment but perhaps too many points conceded. Five points is five points though and maintains a better away record than our’s at home. We had hoped to create a little bit of Bournemouth history that afternoon with James Thorne making his debut at inside centre. James is the grandson of Alan Thorne and James would have been the first grandson of a former player to have played for the Bournemouth 1st XV. However, a knee injury in the warm-up rather spoilt that moment I’m afraid. We wish him a speedy recovery. Good to see our loyal band of followers make the journey to the West Country

and included in the party was Denis Eveleigh’s grandson Tom, over from France, and now an unrecognisable grown up eighteen year old. Tempus fugit.

Talking of history, our historic association with Hampshire continues when we host Winchester in the semi-final of the Hampshire Cup next weekend, November 18. Kick-off is presently 2.30pm but it is subject to change as we hope to bring it forward. Please check the website. The last time we played Winchester was back in March 2004 when our backs coach, Jon Sanchez, played outside centre.

At the time of writing I’m afraid I have no idea who our referee is this afternoon but I would, nonetheless, offer him or her a warm welcome to Chapel Gate.

Last but no means least a warm welcome to you loyal supporters out there in the cold. A warm welcome and enjoy your afternoon of Bournemouth rugby.

opportunity for girls and boys to participate in a sport that is supported by unpaid volunteers. Bournemouth Rugby’s focus on health and wellbeing aligns with Pickfords’ objective to create a healthier workplace for our employees. This year we teamed up with Cancer Research UK to raise awareness among staff and customers on the importance of living healthy lifestyles.

STEVE - AS MATCH DAY SPONSOR, HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO THANK CLIENTS AND STAFF AND INVITE THEM ALONG TO THE DAY?

Firstly, it’s important that we enjoy the day - win or lose. We have a very important former client amongst us – our chairman Phil Sinkinson. As many of you know, Phil is a retired diplomat with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and my current role with Pickfords is Government Services Director. In chatting with Phil, Pickfords safely moved him and his family many times over the years as he traversed the globe working for Her Majesty’s Government. As Match Day sponsor I hope my guests - clients, colleagues and friends - enjoy the day, meet new people and share the experience and excitement of the game.

STEVE - AS A LOCAL BUSINESS, IT IS FANTASTIC TO HAVE YOU HERE TODAY FOR THE MATCH, DO YOU HAVE ANY CLOSING COMMENTS?

Today is all about enjoying the occasion. Pickfords is delighted to sponsor the day. We all hope for a great game of thrilling, open, attractive rugby, and wish both teams well.

For any removals or storage requirements, please visit www.pickfords.co.uk or contact Steve directly 07774 456967 for more information.

MATCH DAY SPONSORS BOURNEMOUTH-RUGBY.CO.UK#LIONSROAR

In the mid-1600s, the Pickford family was initially engaged in the business of mending roads, using packhorses to carry stone from the quarry in Cheshire to customers across the country. Thomas Pickford soon spotted the opportunity to generate income from the return journey and started to carry goods for other parties.

Today, Pickfords is the UK’s leading name in home moving and storage. The company has a national network of branches throughout the country, moving 40,000 people and businesses every year.

Customers, corporate clients and government departments enjoy a wide range of services from Pickfords, including UK and overseas home moving, business removals, environmental recycling for office furniture, employee moving and storage. We decided to find out a little bit more about today’s sponsor with an interview with Steve Boyd, International Operations Director at Pickfords.

STEVE – HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH BOURNEMOUTH RUGBY?

My family and I returned to Bournemouth in

2003 after a six year stint in Brussels. My son Robbie joined the club that year and played in the under-11s. He went through the age groups, and in 2009 the opportunity arose for me to coach the under-17s and -18s for three years. Robbie continues to play, although sadly is out for this season with a knee injury.

STEVE - WHAT DOES SUPPORTING THE CLUB MEAN TO YOU BOTH PERSONALLY AND YOUR BUSINESS?

Rugby is a unique sport where friendships continue long after the game has ended. I was privileged to have coached great kids and had the support of many terrific parents. Our friendships continue, with some of those boys still involved with the club today, and I am still in contact with others who have gone on to follow successful pursuits and careers outside of rugby.

Pickfords is an active supporter of the communities we serve. We love to get involved with local clubs, projects and charities, lending our time and resources for many a good cause. By sponsoring Bournemouth Rugby’s Match Day, we are demonstrating our support for a fantastic community club that provides a great

A Potted History: It all began in 1962 with a buzz around Weston of another rugby club in the town. From modest beginnings, a thrilling club was growing up. Soon the idea became fact.

An inaugural meeting was attended by over 30 people at the London Hotel in the May of that year. There to greet and to help arrange fixtures was Percy Dimery, for many years secretary of Weston RFC.

The club has always played at Hutton Moor and the pitches were on the former Henley’s sports ground where, unfortunately, there were no other facilities. Later, showers were put in the skittle alley at the Golden Lion pub in Worle but it was some distance from the changing rooms at the pitch.

Players used to change at Worle School and use the Golden Lion pub. A total of 33 playing members were registered most of them between the ages of 18 and 21, many of them former members of the Weston club.

The first captain of the 1st XV was Bob Craggs, a front row forward and his vice-captain was

Mike Thomas, a three-quarter. Mr WJ Frost, a local builder, was appointed President, D. Deane Secretary and Jim Farr Treasurer. In the chair and also Fixtures Secretary was Percy G Dimery who became affectionately known as Mr Rugby.

Right at the end of the last millenium, Hornets gained promotion to level 6 (SW2W) where they have, more or less, remained but for a ‘blip’ at the end of the first decade in the new millenium. However successive promotions in 2012/3 (WCN) and 2013/4 (SW1W) have seen them reach the highest level they have ever achieved in 2014/5, finishing a very creditable 6th in their very first season.

COACHES CORNER BOURNEMOUTH-RUGBY.CO.UK#LIONSROAR

We welcome Hornets RFC to us today. They have had a tough start to the season but we are under no illusions that they will be a real test to us.

We’re in good form at the moment picking up bonus points wins in our last 2 games and have a hat trick of wins under our belts now.

We can go and fix our position away from the pack in third today, before the break in the league, where we take on Winchester in the Gales HSB Hampshire Cup 2017/2018 semi-final next Saturday 18th November.

There will be a few player changes from the team last week at Ivybridge but come along to support the lions. Everyone loves a cup battle.

We will be without rocket winger Wyn Roberts until after Christmas. The former Wales sevens international, nicknamed ‘The Flying Doctor’ due to his off-pitch profession, will probably be ruled out until 2018 due to work commitments.

Wyn is opening a new GP practice and is flat out until Christmas.

It’s a bit of a blow but Harry Davis, who has come in, has done amazingly and has mitigated the loss substantially. It’s a shame for Wyn because he is desperate to play.

Scotty Chislett comes back in at 12 after a shoulder injury.

Richard sharp is still on the disciplinary ‘naughty step’ for a couple more weeks so we go with the same back row as last week who were outstanding on the day against Ivybridge.

Sutherland drops to the bench after coming in three minutes before kick off at number 12 and having a good game. He is fast becoming the Austin Healy of Bournemouth Rugby.

Napier comes back in to the row with Hennings giving us a real impact off the bench. As coaches we use the term ‘Dear Johns’ for players who drop out of there respective teams down a level for the following weekend.

MAY THE FORM CONTINUE HOME AND AWAYThis gives us the opportunity to give players ‘work ons’ for progression and shows transparency in our coaching, player feedback to get the best out of all our players to get there way back in and put pressure on the jersey they are persuing. I had the tough decision of a ‘Dear John’ this week with our Director of Rugby, Will Croker, who took the bench spot last week when James Thorne got injured in the warm up on debut.

I said it was a tough decision but Scotty has credit in the bank and rightfully should get his shirt back this week. I told Will Croker, his ‘work ons’ were to stick to coaching, hang the boots up and turn up to training on a Tuesday when it’s cold and wet.

We hope you all enjoy the game today,

Thank you for all your support and C’mon lions.

Sanch Out!

OUR PROUD HISTORY

#BMTH125 #HISTORY #LIONSPRIDE

This edition covers years at the club up to the start of the Second World War. The clubs past has formed our success today and the values we passionately hold as players and supporters.

Starting in season 1928/9 something like half the games were played at DeanPark for reasons that are not explained.

The colours were narrow black and white hoops. A very useful side was got together and there were fixtures against the London Banks, Barnstaple, Exeter, Sidmouth and Bath United. Unfortunately only scratch sides could be raised for these long-distance fixtures although, however, a good show was put up at home. The Club then cut the long-distance fixtures and played within a 50 mile radius of Bournemouth. On one occasion D A Kendrew (who won 10 caps for England between 1930 and 1936) played for the ‘A’ side! He also won four DSOs in the 1935–45 war.

In 1929, the Sports Club purchased the ground at Kinson Park Road, Northbourne and, as there was room, Bournemouth RFC were offered a

pitch. However, the offer was declined owing to the distance from the town!

Dicks Richards then undertook the job of raising the newly formed Rugby Section of the Sports Club and, within a month, two teams were beingfielded, playing in black, yellow and blue striped shirts. The Poole RFC closed down about this time and, fortunately, the services of all theirmembers were obtained. As the ground at Northbourne was not yet ready, a ground was hired at Muscliffe Farm, near the Horse and Jockey pub on the Wimborne Road. Changing and bathing were in a loft followed by tea in acow shed. The farmer was paid 2⁄6d (12 1⁄2p)to clear the pitch of cow dung but his idea of clearance seemed to be spread it evenly over alarger area.

After going for three seasons, the Sports Club beat Bournemouth RFC by an unspecified narrow margin and a very keen and even contest developed between the two clubs.
