MAY BOOK OF THE MONTH NewsSECRETS OF THE TIDESHannah Richell

Every family has its secrets. Some are small, like telling a white lie or snooping through a private drawer. Others are more serious, like infidelity and betrayal. And some secrets are so terrible they must be hidden away in a deep, dark place, for if they ever came to light, they would surely tear a family apart The Tides are a family full of secrets. Returning to Clifftops,

the rambling family house perched high on the Dorset coastline, youngest daughter Dora hopes for a fresh start, for herself and the new life she carries. But can long-held secrets ever really be forgiven? And even if you can forgive, can you ever really learn to love again?

ABOUT THE AUTHORHannah Richell Hannah Richell was born in Kent, England and spent her childhood years in Buckinghamshire and Canada. After graduating from the University of Nottingham in 1998 she worked in book publishing and film. She now lives in Sydney with her husband, their two young children and a black-and-white cat called Lennie and returns to the UK as often as possible to spend time with family and savour the green grass of home. SECRETS OF THE TIDES is the spellbinding debut from Hannah Richell, a rich and compelling family drama with a dark thread of suspense at its heart.

During April we announced the winners of several competitions. Our ‘Dum-mies” winners were: Genevieve Toussaint of Greensborough (pictured) and David King of Frankston North - who each won 5 Dummies books of their choice - congratulations!

We also congratulate Betty Gliddon of Eltham who purchased a book from Robinsons on our Opening Gala Celebration Day and won a new release fiction box set from Random House - 8 novels with a retail value of over $250.

The team had a lot of fun dressing up on the day. In particular Andre as The Cat in the Hat attracted a lot of attention roaming around Greensborough Plaza handing out balloons.

And for now GOOD READING!

ReviewsPRELOVEDShirley MarrHaving loved Shirley Marr’s previous title ‘Fury’, I was understandably a little excited to see she had written a new book! The story is about Amy, a teenage girl who has a lot going on in her life right now. Her mother, who is obsessed with the Ghost Whisperer, is constantly lecturing Amy on things she

shouldn’t do lest she find herself seeing ghosts. Her best friend Rebecca has a carefully crafted “cool girl” persona that often leaves Amy feeling like she’s Rebecca’s support cast. A role which Amy is usually quite happy to stay in. All this changes the day she and Rebecca fall into a fountain and Amy finds a locket in Rebecca’s hair. Rebecca, who is angry at Amy for causing the fall, informs Amy she doesn’t want it and tells her to keep it. Amy gets the locket open and suddenly realizes that maybe she should’ve been listening to her mother all along, when she finds herself seeing the ghost of Logan, a boy who died in the 80’s. So not only is Amy now haunted, it also happens to be by a ghost who really should’ve been haunting Rebecca! And who’s also kind of cute…While this book was quite different from ‘Fury’, I still found myself really enjoying it! I mean what’s not to love about crazy 80’s outfits and lingo like “chucking a spack” and “hey, take a chill pill” all rolled into a zany ghost story! I also really loved the brief line that can only be a reference to ‘Fury’. Nicole.

GAME OF THRONES S1 DVDGeorge R. R. Martin With book sales of Game of Thrones series by George R.R. Martin hot on the charts for the past 6 months, I simply had to see what all the fuss was about. I sat down to watch Series one with excitement, but also trepidation (it has an R rating). Series one is based on the first book - Game of

Thrones. It is dark, bloody, sex filled and so is the dvd. Each novel is over 1,000 pages and full of action - and so is the dvd. There is rarely an episode where someone is not beheaded, turtured or involved in incest. This is truely not for the young or easily disgusted!Set in the fictional world called Westeros, where a king on the Iron Throne rules over an uneasy conglomerate of lands called the Seven Kingdoms, it follows the lives (and frequent, sudden, brutal deaths) of several powerful families. The Starks - headed by Ned Stark, played by Sean Bean - rule Winter-fell in the wintry North where an ancient, enormous wall of ice defends the Kingdoms from some mythical evil beyond. Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy), the libertine king, and his conniving wife Cersei (Lena Headey) of the Lannister Family, rule the South. Across the sea, the offspring of the deposed former king form an alliance with the Dothraki, a semi-wild tribe of nomadic horsemen, and plot a return to what is rightfully theirs. The DVD comes with a few fun extras, including a look at the artificial language of Dothraki - which contins approximately 3,000 words appar-ently. With Series 2 airing now, it makes me want to sign up for pay tv just to keep following the characters (those that make it to Series 2).

Of course now I can’t stop at this - like everyone else caught up in the phenomenon that is Game of Thrones I simply must go and read the whole series. Whilst darker than I usually read, the characters and plot are so compelling that I am excited at the prospect of thousands of pages to get caught up in. Susanne.

WAITING FOR SUNRISEWilliam Boyd I’ve been wanting to read a book by William Boyd since “Restless” won the Costa Award in 2006 but never found the time until now; I’m glad I did. Boyd is an author who seems to have unfortunately been termed as “middlebrow”, his works neither flowery enough for the literati but deemed too complex for the mass market; judging from this work I would say that he is simply a great

storyteller, and we certainly need more of those. He writes with a spare and elegant style which fleshes out character and place with wonderful economy so as not to get in the way of the momentum of the plot. The story is complex, and shifts location and tone continuously, but it’s never confusing; Lysander Rief, a semi-successful British actor arrives in Vienna just prior to World War 1 to try some psychoanalysis - the Austro-Hungarian Empire is about to fall into the abyss and when he gets involved with the wrong woman he is forced to flee. The novel takes in the Western Front and Geneva before settling in London where Rief has to find a traitor at the heart of the British military. The book is part thriller, part psychological study and part historical capturing of a unique time and place, and I thought all the parts complemented each other beautifully. I particularly liked the description of the British war machine, from the vast bureaucracy in London all the way to the pointy end in the trenches. I’ve read a couple of non-fiction books on World War 1 recently but it really does take a great fiction writer like Boyd to make you feel what it was like to be there. It’s recently been announced that he will write the next James Bond novel for the Fleming estate which, after reading this book, I find a mouth-watering prospect. Paul.

NO ONE IS HERE EXCEPT ALL OF USRamona AusubelIt’s 1939 and war is raging across Europe. After a stranger is fished out of their river, the inhabitants of a small village in Romania decide to shut themselves off from the outside world. To save themselves and live peacefully, they’ll reinvent history, start the world over again and build a new temple for their God.

Haunting and lyrical, this debut novel is heart wrenching and heart warming at the same time. Any story set during WWII is harrowing in some way to read and yet the language and premise of using folklore and story-telling to convey this particular story feels right and good.If you enjoy this you could also try ‘City of Thieves’ by David Benioff, ‘The Book Thief’ by Marcus Zusak and ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman. Chantel.

AFTER CLEO CAME JONAHHelen BrownHelen Brown’s first book “Cleo” was an uplifting, touching memoir which was so honest and heartfelt that it may have been one of my all time favourites of the genre. Helen’s second book - “After Cleo Came Jonah” was just as wonderful as the first. After being diagnosed with breast cancer Helen visited a pet store

- and Jonah, a fiesty little Birman kitten was the result! Jonah was very different from Cleo - with his mischevious knack for getting into things he wasn’t supposed to (not to mention places he wasn’t meant to be!) and with the impending wedding of Helen’s son Rob and her daughter Lydia’s decision to become a Buddhist nun in Sri Lanka, Helen’s life was decidedly topsy turvy. The mother/daughter relationship between herself and Lydia that Helen writes about is truly quite special. It was also very interesting to see the similarities that were drawn between her daughters rebellious nature, and a similar rebellious streak that was very evident in Jonah! In Helen Brown’s own words: “This is the story of how one cat leads to another and that rebellious felines and daughters have more in common than you might think.” The way in which Helen tells her story makes the reader feel as though Jonah is not “just a cat” but another member of the family. “After Cleo Came Jonah” made me laugh, cry and reaffirmed my belief that pets really do make such a difference in our lives. The reader feels as though they are right there, alongside Helen’s family, sharing in their triumphs, their tribultions, but most of all sharing in the great love that they have for one another. This is more than a “pet memoir” it is a truly beautiful story about hope, endurance and family.

Laura.
