I Love Conwy, Conwy Loves Me

blinc returns to Conwy for the second year

The second blinc digital arts festival takes place this year on the 27th-28th October, in Conwy, north Wales. Following on from last year’s success, the arts event will showcase some of the most exciting artworks from thirty different artists. This year’s event is dedicated to Alan Turing, the mathematical genius who helped to crack the German coding in the Second World War and is considered by many to be the father of com-puting. 2012 is his Centenary Year.

Last year over ten thousand people descended on the town to see the castle illuminated by very powerful projectors, transforming the 12th century architecture into a backdrop for art. This year the event will be different, offering a more dynamic festival at various sites around the town as well as the castle.

Two large-scale commissions are being exhibited on the BBC Space running in conjunction with the event. The first piece, entitled Intense Colour Movement, a collaboration between Craig Morrison, Joel Cockrill, Jobina Tinnemans and Elizabeth Ashworth, is to be projected onto Plas Mawr. The second piece, Thank You is dedicated to Alan Turing and aims to highlight the legacy of this incredible mathematician. This piece is also created by the artist/curators Craig Morrison and Joel Cockrill and comprises two very large lasers, a replica of the Fourth Plinth and an extremely large white neon epitaph.

The selected artists include Bedwyr Williams, the Welsh artist representing Wales at the next Venice Biennale, Jessica Lloyd Jones and Ant Dickinson, Helen Booth, Jobina Tinnemans, Malcolm Litson and Wendy Dawson. There will be a cross section of both performance and site-specific pieces that will be on exhibition for the event. Anna Demi-trui’s Turing Touring, an exhibition of work created by artists in response to Alan Turing, will also be on show for the weekend. The venues and exhibition spaces are scattered all over Conwy and the event will run for two days.

Craig MorrisonArtist and blinc Curator

Craig Morrison’s initial work with Meat Beat Manifesto and his Cyber Punk designs led to his work being on permanent display at both the Science Museum in London and the V&A. He has always been passionate about Art and Film. The Alan Turing Centenary has inspired him to col-laborate on two large works this year: Intense Colour Movement , a large projection piece on Plas Mawr and Thank You, an emotional response to Alan Turing’s Epitaph re-created in neon. Both are being streamed on The BBC Space.

As an artist Craig Morrison’s work is large in scale. The notion of being enveloped is very important, demanding full commitment from the au-dience. Yet his ideas are in juxtaposition very delicate and emotional.

Joel CockrillArtist and blinc Curator

A sense of place, and the interplay of sound and light within a space have been a repeated reference in Joel’s work across a wide variety of media and creative explorations. These core interests have been the elemental influences for film, performance, audio work and collaboration for the last 25 years.

For blinc 2012, Joel has collaborated with Craig Morrison on two large scale light installations, ‘Thank you’ a tribute to mathematical pioneer Alan Turing, and ‘Intense Colour Movement’ a projection mapped light work on Plas Mawr.

Mae’r syniad o le a chydadwaith sain a golau o fewn lle yn rhywbeth am-lwg iawn yng ngwaith Joel. Mae ei ddiddordeb yn hynny wedi dylanwadu ar ei waith, boed yn ffilm, perfformiad, gwaith sain neu waith ar y cyd ag artist arall. Ers chwarter canrif bellach mae o wedi bod yn defnyddio amrywiaeth o gyfryngau gan arbrofi gyda’i greadigrwydd.

Ar gyfer blinc 2012, mae Joel wedi cydweithio â Craig Morrison ar ddau osodiad golau enfawr. Mae ‘Diolch’ yn coffau Alan Turing, y mathe-mategwr arloesol, ac mae ‘Symudiadau Lliw Dwys’ yn ddarn a fydd yn cael ei daflunio ar Blas Mawr.

Aether & Hemera

Aether & Hemera are the ancient Greek god and goddess of brighter upper air and daylight. Aether is Claudio Benghi, the media architect; Hemera is Gloria Ronchi, the lighting artist.

Aether & Hemera interdisciplinary collaboration focuses on researching the sensory engagement of an immaterial force like light, combining digital technologies and physical spaces for creating immersive and emotional headspaces. Their artistic aim is to provoke memories, explore aesthetic interactions and to elicit feelings of connective human experi-ences in a required-to-participate audience.

Mae Aether a Hemera yn tynnu ar sawl disgyblaeth wahanol wrth gyd-weithio. Prif ffocws eu gweithiau yw defnyddio grym anfaterol fel golau i brocio’r synhwyrau. Mae’r artistiaid yn gwneud hyn drwy gyfuno techno-leg ddigidol a gofod materol i greu gofod emosiynol y gallwch chi ymgol-li’n llwyr ynddo. Alan Whitfield

Alan Whitfield worked on poetic verse as part of his projection at last years blinc festival.

This year he wanted to create a series of semi autobiographical poems about someone developing a love for the walls inside Conwy. The view-er is encouraged to engage with a series of light and sound scapes in homage to film noir era. He aims to encourage the viewer to record there response through the use of social media #noirconwy whilst engaging with his words

Alex May

Alex May is an artist working with light and code based in the UK.

For blinc, Alex will be using his own video mapping software “Painting-WithLight” to create an impromptu and evolving video sculpture (3D physical sculpture augmented with video projection) using objects and video collected from around Conwy during the course of blinc, in a con-temporary reinterpretation of Joseph Beuys’ 1974 performance “I like America and America likes me”.

Alex has not visited Conwy before (and knows very little about the area), so the final video sculpture will be based on his first and true reactions to the environment of the town.

Anna Dumitriu

“Intuition and Ingenuity”: An Art Exhibition in Celebration of the Life of Alan Turing.

2012 is the centenary of the birth of Alan Turing, one of the greatest minds Britain has produced. Between inventing the digital computer and helping to decode the German Enigma machine, to founding the science of Artificial Intelligence, the world today would have been a very differ-ent place without him and his ideas. His ideas have captured the imag-ination of artists for decades and the technologies based on them have provided the tools to create new kinds of artworks.

This exhibition, which takes its name from Turing’s own writing on the subject of mathematical reasoning, brings together a number of im-portant artists from digital art pioneers to emerging contemporaries to investigate Turing’s enduring influence on art and contemporary culture.

Bedwyr Williams

Bedwyr Williams was born in Saint Asaph, north Wales in 1974 and spent his formative years in Colwyn Bay. He graduated from Central St Martins School of Art in London and Ateliers in Arnhem (The Neth-erlands). Following a period in London he returned to live and work in Rhostryfan, north Wales. Williams observes the world with a sharp eye and wry humour. He draws on quirky banalities of his own autobiograph-ic existence – from school days in a north Wales farming community to his experiences as an artist-in-residence –to reveal both his and our complex neurosis and idiosyncrasies. His latest body of work furthers his investigation into personal mythology and identity, emphasizing on his own personal narratives and family histories.

Cafodd Bedwyr Williams ei eni yn Llanelwy ym 1974 a’i fagu ym Mae Colwyn. Bu iddo raddio o Ysgol Gelf Ganolog Sant Martin yn Llundain ac Ateliers yn Arnhem, yr Iseldiroedd. Yn dilyn cyfnod yn Llundain fe symudodd yn ôl i Gymru i fyw yn Rhostryfan. Mae Bedwyr yn edrych ar y byd gyda llygad craff a hiwmor eironig. Mae’n tynnu ar ei brofiadau cy-ffredin a rhyfedd ei hun – o’i ddyddiau mewn ysgol wledig i’w gyfnod fel artist preswyl. Wrth wneud hyn mae’n datgelu ei fympwyon a’i niwrosis cymhleth ei hun, ynghyd â’n rhai ninnau hefyd. Yn ei waith diweddaraf mae’n ymchwilio ymhellach i hunaniaeth a chwedloniaeth bersonol gan roi pwyslais arbennig ar ei hanes ei hun a hanes ei deulu.

Chris Bird, Viv Rickman Poole & Robin Boult

Artists Chris Bird and Vivienne Rickman Poole have embarked on a col-laborative film project that aims to reveal some of what draws them to the adventure of swimming across deep open water in wild places.The lakes, rivers and coastal areas of Conwy have long been a source of both recreationand artistic inspiration for both Chris and Viv. They explore the abstract, multi-sensory and physical experience of swimming. It can be both a harsh struggle with the ele-ments and a serene and ethereal experience, unique to time and place.

Robin Boult will also provide the soundscape to accompany the piece.

Mae’r artistiaid Chris Bird a Vivienne Rickman-Poole wedi creu prosiect ffilm ar y cyd sy’n ceisio amlygu rhai o’r pethau sy’n eu hudo i fynd ar anturiaethau fel nofio mewn moroedd a llynnoedd anghysbell.

Mae llynnoedd, afonydd ac arfordir Sir Gonwy wedi ysbrydoli’r ddau yn eu bywyd hamdden a’u bywyd artistig fel ei gilydd. Yn y prosiect hwn maen nhw’n edrych ar agweddau corfforol, haniaethol a synhwyraidd nofio. Chris Squire & Spencer Roberts

Chris Squire’s roots lie in the performing arts, but works at the interface between participatory events, new technologies and installation.Based in Yorkshire he is director of Impossible Arts, collaborating with artists from many disciplines to combine participatory, digital, live and visual arts in a wide range of innovative projects.His work mixes the technological with the lyrical and aims to involve and intrigue people from many different backgrounds.‘Lightweight’ is an elegant 4m diameter inflatable sphere that looks simple. It is also the hiding place for complex electronic, sonic and op-tical equipment developed to create seemingly mysterious and effortless effecs.

Desmond Paul Henry. 1921 – 2004

Desmond Paul Henry (1921-2004) ranks among one of the few early British pioneers of Computer Art/Graphics of the 1960’s. During this period he constructed a total of three mechanical drawing machines (in 1960, ’63 and ’67) based around the components of analogue bomb-sight computers. Henry’s second drawing machine and its effects were included in the major Art and Technology exhibition of 1968: Cybernetic Serendipity (I.C.A, London). V.A London. MOSI Manchester . Some of these works will be projected and displayed during blinc.

Dion Hamer

The indirect reflection on society and cultural issues in general has been an important component in Hamer’s art making. Travelling has always been a source of inspiration for his work, feeding his curiosity and view-points. Fundamental to his practice is the investigation into site, depict-ing his affiliation with its culture, identity and history via a conceptual response.

He is inspired by repetition of the everyday – the mundane – and at-tempts to make the everyday extraordinary.

Dymphna D’Arcy

Dymphna works in the arena of dance, theatre, video and moving image, exploring notions and concepts concerning time, place and identity. She examines ideas of identity and identity politics and concepts associated with topography and place.

Working with video and moving image enables her to examine the concept of perspective and the manner by which we perceive our sur-roundings. It brings ordinary situations into focus and transforms them. At times her camera is an aid back to history to help understand the present and move forward into the future a multi faceted shifting process that is constantly evolving.

Elizabeth Ashworth

Elizabeth Ashworth’s poetry, as her painting, is intuitive and expres-sionistic, written in response to change and flux, as experienced in the visual world of landscape and atmosphere and in narratives of loss and isolation. She is a winner of the Alice Hunt Bartlett Prize and her poems have appeared in Transatlantic Review, Poetry Review, Poetry Wales and New Welsh Review, with collections from Outposts and Cinnamon Press. Her influences range from Japanese poetic forms through Beat poetry and Dada, and her poetry is intended to disturb and delight rather than reassure and soothe. Through textual and textural harmonies and using language as she uses colour, finding fresh juxtapositions and new mean-ings, she likes to explore the possibilities of both art forms.

Mae barddoniaeth Elizabeth Ashworth, fel ei lluniau, yn reddfol ac yn fynegiadol. Mae’n ymateb i newidiadau cyson megis newidiadau i’r tirlun a’r atmosffer a newidiadau yn sgil colled ac unigedd. Greg Byatt

Greg Byatt , Multimedia and Relaxation Artist lives and works in North Wales. Previous works have been seen and experienced in a variety of venues in Liverpool including FACT and FutureSonic and CornerHouse in Manchester. Its been a hectic year working on a Musical Theatre Show, Sir Henry at Rawlinson’s End and adding to the World Jazz Film Archive as well as completing a major collaborative Wales Arts Council Project in Parc near Bala. The Digital Showcase Cinema Experience and Exhibition Space will again be in the transformed British Legion in Conwy and will be the festival Hub for blinc digital 2012.

An eclectic programme featuring a showcase presentation from Artists in the North West of England and a Wales National Sound and Screen Archive Special as well as showreels from the participating artists and digital media creators, along with other surprises should make for an exciting weekend.

Artist Amlgyfrwng ac Ymlacio, yn byw ac yn gweithio yng Ngogledd Cymru. Mae ei weithiau wedi eu gweld a’u profi mewn nifer o lefydd gan gynnwys y FACT a’r Future Sonic yn Lerpwl a’r Corner House ym Manceinion. Helen Booth

First and foremost Helen is a visual artist. She is essentially drawn to nature and the brevity of the human condition. She finds inspiration in the majestic landscape of Wales as much as she is motivated by the patterns and mathematics of elementary physics, in particular String Theory. The notion of minute vibrating, intelligent strings being funda-mental to life is astonishing, particularly when the world that we inhabit is so structured and disciplined. This dichotomy, the juxtaposition of Chaos and Order is essential to her work.

Love and Death are the two states that we all experience. She likes to visualise these states as Chaos and Order, as Ephemeral and Structured lines. The malevolence of the castle also offers the same, its barbaric history with its now adoring visitor.

Mae Cariad a Marwolaeth yn ddau beth rydym ni i gyd yn eu profi. Mae’n hoff o ddychmygu’r pethau hyn fel Anhrefn a Threfn ac fel llinellau Darfodedig a Strwythuredig. Mae malais y castell hefyd yn cynnig yr un gwrthgyferbyniad – yr hanes barbaraidd a’r ymwelwyr edmygol.

Alys Hughes & Elly Strigner

Alys Hughes and Elly Strigner have collaborated to create a performance that explores the Welsh sentiment of ‘Hiraeth,’ which has no direct English translation, but is close to ‘yearning’ or ‘longing.’ The project communicates the deep emotional complexity that people feel in relation to this aspect of Welsh culture.

The piece will combine live dance by Alys with animated film by Elly – which will be projected on to the surrounding walls – accompanied by a soundscape of Welsh poetry and peoples’ experiences of Hiraeth.

Mae Alys Hughes ac Elly Strigner wedi cydweithio i greu perfformiad sy’n edrych ar y cysyniad Cymreig o ‘Hiraeth.’ Mae’r prosiect yn ceisio egluro’r emosiwn cymhleth y mae pobl yn ei deimlo wrth hiraethu.

‘Aura’ explores the development of the electromechanical machine to the modern age of computer technology through the creative use of Kir-lian imaging. An electric charge applied to a variety of computer compo-nents produces visible energy fields captured in moving image, accom-panied by a soundscape of electromechanical and electronic noises.

By stripping the notion of the ‘computer’ down to single components, we attempt to peel back its layers and reveal its internal workings and life force. Capturing the interaction between electricity and technology exposes the physical energy and power of electricity as a natural phe-nomena controlled and utlised by man.

Mae ‘Aura’ yn archwilio’r ffordd y datblygydd y peiriant electromecanyd-dol yn gyfrifiadur modern drwy ddefnyddio delwedd Kirlian mewn modd creadigol. Mae rhoi gwefr drydanol i nifer o rannau o gyfrifiadur yn cyn-hyrchu meysydd egni gweledol sy’n cael eu dal mewn delwedd symudol gyda gwedd-sain electromecanyddol a sain electroneg.

Drwy dynnu’r cyfrifiadur oddi wrth ei gilydd yn ddarnau unigol, maen nhw’n ceisio mynd o dan groen y cyfrifiadur a dadlennu ei weithdrefnau a’i rym. Joanna Wright and Alex Ashcroft

the next year she is the artist in residence for the Zero Carbon Britain Project, based at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth, funded by Arts Council Wales. Joanna lives and works in Bangor, north Wales.

Alex Ashcroft is a sound designer and engineer working across diverse audio disciplines. His collaborations include studio recording and loca-tion recording projects, film work, audio-visual gallery installations and live performance art. www.aja-audio.co.uk

Jobina Tinnemans

Jobina Tinnemans is a music composer and sound designer, an inde-pendent radio production company and contemporary artist; her work is rich and contrasting and encompasses a wide variety of techniques throughout her practice. Originating from the Netherlands, with a back-ground in conceptual production design and classical music, she is thriv-ing in her newly adopted home of Pembrokeshire for nearly five years. The wild outdoors and space greatly influence her essence of music. In her remote habitat she can focus deeply on progressing her practice. Tinnemans has worked with some of the most highly regarded innova-tors and institutions in music, radio and research

Yn ei chynefin anghysbell mae hi’n gallu canolbwyntio’n llwyr ar ddatblygu ei dawn ac o ganlyniad mae ei gwaith wedi mynd o nerth i nerth. Mae hi wedi ymddid-dori ym maes cynhyrchu cysyniadol a cherddoriaeth glasurol ac mae’r awyr agored a’r syniad o le wedi bod yn ddylanwad mawr ar ei cherddori-aeth. Ludic Rooms

I Love Conwy and Conwy Loves Me is an interactive generative installa-tion that utilises mapped projection alongside a customised electronic touchscreen device. This device acts as a wireless interface for the audi-ence to author their own interpretation of the piece, projected against the spectacular backdrop that is Conwy Castle.

Ludic Rooms is a collaboration between digital artists Ashley Brown and Dom Breadmore. They specialise in the transformation of spaces through technology and play. All their work is interactive, empowering audiences as co-creators. Their work encompasses installation, perfor-mance and public art, attempting to explore the connectivity between our digital and analogue experiences of the world.

Mae Conwy a garaf, câr Conwy fi yn osodiad rhyngweithiol sy’n defnyd-dio tafluniadau ochr yn ochr â sgrin gyffwrdd electronig arbennig. Mae’r sgrin gyffwrdd yn rhyngwyneb diwifr i’r gynulleidfa ac yn rhoi cyfle iddyn nhw ddehongli’r darn eu hunain a fydd wedi ei daflunio ar gastell Conwy.

Mae Ludic Rooms yn ffrwyth cydweithio rhwng yr artistiaid digidol Ashley Brown a Dom Breadmore. Maen nhw’n arbenigo mewn gweddnewid llefydd drwy dechnoleg a chwarae. Malcolm Litson

Malcolm Litson has an interdisciplinary art practice that includes pro-jection, audio, moving image and 2D media.His work with architectural projection evolved from a stint of guerrilla advertising that includes the infamous projection of Gail Porter onto the Houses of Parliament. His work developed with a commission for the Turin Biennale where he pro-jected images onto landmark buildings in the city.

Recently he has been working with ‘The Light Surgeons’, an established multimedia collective. Projects have included audio production for ‘LDN24’ at The Museum of London and music production and perfor-mance for ‘True Fictions’, an audio/visual performance that has toured internationally.

Menna ElfynMenna Elfyn was born in the Swansea valley but raised in Carmarthen. She has a BA in Welsh literature and a PhD from University of Wales, Trinity Saint David where she is Director of Creative Writing. She has published twelve col-lections of poetry, children’s novels, libretti for UK and US composers as well as plays for television and radio. Her most recent collection in Welsh is Merch Perygl from Gomer Press in 2011 and her bilingual volume Murmur was pub-lished by Bloodaxe Books, in autumn 2012. This volume was selected by Poetry Book Society Recommended Translation, the first ever book of Welsh poetry in English translation to be chosen. Her work has been translated into eighteen languages for which she received an International Foreign Poetry Prize in 2009. A columnist with the ‘Western Mail’ since 1994 she has collab-orated widely with many artists.

Ei chyfrolau diweddaraf yw Merch Perygl ( Gomer, 2011) a Murmur ( Bloodaxe Books, 2012) a chafodd y gyfrol ddwyieithog ei dewis gan Gymdeithas Lyfrau ar Farddoniaeth gan ennill cymeradwyaeth a chlod ar gyfer 2012. Neil Coombs

Neil Coombs is a multimedia artist and writer based in Wales. His work is informed by surrealism and, as such, deals with explorations of the marvellous manifested in the everyday. He has exhibited photographic, installation and multimedia work in galleries and at festivals both nation-ally and internationally. His work was recently included in group shows in Turkey, Germany and USA. Coombs is founder and editor of the surreal-ist journal Patricide.

He currently has a major exhibition at Bodelwyddan Castle that includes his Phantoms of Surrealism collage and photographic work alongside some examples of recent collaborative projects. His multimedia piece at the BLINC festival has developed from this photomontage work.

Mae Neil Coombs yn artist ac awdur amlgyfrwng sy’n gweithio yng ngogledd Cymru. Mae ei waith wedi ei ysbrydoli gan swrealaeth ac, oherwydd hynny, yn archwilio hynod bethau bywyd pob dydd. Mae ei waith ffotograffig, ei osodiadau a’i waith amlgyfrwng wedi eu harddan-gos mewn orielau a gwyliau cenedlaethol a rhyngwladol. Yn ddiweddar cafodd ei waith ei gynnwys mewn sioeau grwp yn Nhwrci, yr Almaen a’r Unol Daleithiau. Neil ydi sylfaenydd a golygydd y cylchgrawn swrrealaidd Patricide.

Rob Spaull

Based in North Wales, Rob has worked both locally and internationally with digital projection mapping and multi-media development for over 10 years. Rob’s projection work has been seen around North Wales in theatres, touring shows and projected on buildings.

Rob is passionate about bringing contemporary digital art into main-stream culture by ensuring all his work is both exciting and accessible while keeping elements of the abstract and unexpected. His love of film, 3D imagery, motion graphics and audio composition are apparent in his work through the blend of story telling and cutting edge visual and sonic production.

Mae Rob yn gweithio yng ngogledd Cymru. Ers dros ddeng mlynedd mae wedi gweithio yn lleol a rhyngwladol gan ddefnyddio mapio digidol a datblygu amlgyfrwng i greu tafluniadau. Mae tafluniadau Rob wedi eu gweld ar draws gogledd Cymru – mewn theatrau, sioeau teithiol ac ar adeiladau.

Ronan Devlin & David J Knowles

Ronan Devlin is a designer and artist working from the studio and gallery JeinDevlin in Conwy.David J. Knowles is a scientist and musician based in Dublin.

For Blinc both collaborators independently made a series of sixteen images and corresponding audio samples to which their counterpart provided both audio and visual responses. Both audio and visual com-ponents are structurally based on the dot matrix grid. This process of exchange continued until four minutes of material were collated. The re-sults were documented and arranged to make an audio visualpiece which was projected onto the outside walls of Oriel JeinDevlin.

Seth D’Arcy Schewe

Since graduating from Derby University Seth has continued to experi-ment and explore a plethora of different digital media techniques. He is constantly exploring new approaches to vjing and audio-visual pro-jections. Using the camera as a social instrument to look and learn and record life’s unique experiences. He analyses the ebb and flow of human behaviour and surveys the world as it drifts by. Seth is a cross-platform specialist and digital media tutor and enjoys vjing. Working with digital technology enables him to examine the manner by which light shadow and perspective can be blended and manipulated creatively.

Ers graddio o Brifysgol Derby mae Seth wedi parhau i arbrofi gyda nifer o wahanol dechnegau ym maes y cyfryngau digidol. Rhian Haf & Joel Cockrill

Glass comes alive in the presence of light and my interest draws on the properties of the material’s ability to capture, transmit and reflect light. Whichever approach, process or method is employed, light is integral to the concept, development and outcome of my work. The intention is al-ways to create an experience, highlighting a specific quality of the glass, which is enhanced by the directed flow of light. Having been introduced to new digital media techniques, this collaboration with Ffloc has ena-bled me to discover different and innovative ways of working. Exploring potential outcomes using a different light source to what I usually work with has paved the way for further development of my artistic practise within this.

Daw gwydr yn fyw ym mhresenoldeb golau ac mae fy niddordeb yn y cyfr-wng yn deillio o’i allu i gipio, tawsyrru ac adlewyrchu golau. Sean Vicary & Steve Knight

Sean Vicary is an artist based in West Wales. His work deals with ideas of ‘landscape’ (internal and external) and our increasingly politicised interaction with the ‘natural’ world. He uses found objects and fragments of detritus to explore this relationship, manipulating these elements to create animated assemblages. These act as triggers for the viewer, some-times suggestive of a wider narrative or the hidden processes at play behind the visible.

Steve Knight’s background in communications software and interactive systems development fused with Sean’s fine art practice has enabled them to generate compelling imagery across a wide range of media. Recent pieces have explored ideas of liminal space and identity, combin-ing video installation with site-specific animation presented through a smartphone augmented reality browser.

Mae Sean Vicary yn artist sy’n byw yng ngorllewin Cymru. Mae ei waith yn mynd i’r afael â’r syniad o ‘dirlun’ (allanol a mewnol) ac o’r byd ‘na-turiol’ y mae ein hymwneud ag o yn mynd yn fwyfwy gwleidyddol. Wendy Dawson

Wendy Leah Dawson is a metal artist whose work is inspired by antiqui-ty, mechanisms, and the human urge to invent. Objects are dismantled, studied and dissected, pieces are removed and categorised, recreated and incorporated into other objects. Her work brings together tradition-al craft skills, influenced by her upbringing amidst the family trades of clockmaking and dressmaking, and the application of modern technol-ogy seen in rapid prototyping, 3D scanning and the use of digital tools in the creative process. She was recently introduced 3D stop-motion animation and projection, which has transformed her working practice, introducing thoughts about interactivity and visualising movement, and is currently exploring the manipulation and recording of her work using these processes.

Turing’s poetic epitaph in Neon accompanied by powerful lasers on the castle towers. The lasers are programmed with Rolling Spheres that flicker at a frequency calculated using Morse code, projecting a mathe-matically coded ‘Thank You’ towards the heavens.

Alan Mathison Turing, OBE, FRS (23 June 1912 – 7 June 1954), was an Englishmathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and computer scientist. He was highly influential in the development of computer science his work having played a significant role in the creation of the modern computer. Turing is widely considered to be the father of computer science and artificial intelligence.During the Second World War, Turing worked at Bletchley Park, Britain’s code breakingcentre. For a time he devised a number of techniques for breaking German ciphers, including the method of the bombe, an elec-tromechanical machine that could find settings for the Enigma machine.The festival is dedicated to his achievements and his incredible legacy.
