FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME QUINTO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO

February 7, 2021

My dear parishioners, In the Book of Revelation, we read “A great sign ap-peared in the sky, a woman - clothed with the sun, with the moon un-der her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” (12:1) As you walk into our new adoration chapel in the lower church, this verse should be kept in mind. The primary focus should be on the exquisite wood carved image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This image also serves as an exposition tabernacle, the Eucharist is placed in the spot where Mary’s womb is. In the original ap-parition of Our Lady of Guadalupe she appears as a pregnant woman to St. Juan Diego. In this stunning image our Blessed Mother again appears to us carrying the joy of her womb, our Lord Jesus Christ. A light behind the Sacred Host illumines our Lord as we come to adore Him. The pews in the chapel originally came from the lower church and were restored by parishioners Sandro Loja and An-gel Uguña, along with some other helpers. They did the resto-ration in their free time and only accepted reimbursement for the supplies used. The rest of the work they donated to the par-ish. The chapel originally could only fit about 10 people and now it can comfortably fit 50 with the possibility of more. The chapel can be used and still have room for social distancing while the previous chapel could not. Inside the chapel on the back wall are Stations of the Cross. On the wall to the right, are the Mysteries of the Rosary. These images were made by the Monastic Sisters of Bethlehem of the Assumption of the Virgin and of Saint Bruno who have a monastery in Livingston Manor, NY, where I some-times go on retreat. These stations may help you in the reci-tation of the rosary or if you wish to do the Stations of the Cross down in the chapel. The chapel now includes two of the stained-glass win-dows from the lower church, the Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple and the Miracle at the Wedding Feast in Cana. On the same side as the windows, we have several images. Three are statues of the Holy Family, St. Anne (the mother of Mary) and St. Francis of Assisi which were originally in the outdoor shrine of the church, which was taken down due to flooding issues. There is also a new statue of St. Jose Sanchez del Rio (St. Joselito), the young man martyred in Mexico in 1928 for refus-ing to denounce Jesus Christ as King and Lord. The painting of St. John Paul II kneeling in prayer is on the wall between the two windows. There is also a candle stand for those who wish to light a candle for special intentions. A box for donations is located next to the candles. The crucifix that was in the chapel previously is on the main wall. We also installed a small sound system and a camera to allow us to livestream events from the chapel. It is my hope that different groups can use the chapel outside of normal ado-ration times. When we return to more onsite activities and clas-ses, I see CCD classes coming over for lessons and prayer, the youth ministry using it for prayer and adoration, and other min-istries as well. It is a beautiful space for prayer and an encoun-ter with the Lord. We are blessed as a parish to have such a gift, let us give thanks to God for it always. God bless,

Mis queridos feligreses, En el Libro del Apocalipsis, leemos “Apareció en el cielo una gran señal: una mujer envuelta en el sol como en un vestido, con la luna bajo sus pies y una corona de doce estrellas en la cabeza.” (12,1) Al entrar en nuestra nueva capilla de adoración en el sótano de la iglesia, este versículo debe mantenerse en la mente. El enfoque principal debe ser la exquisita imagen de Nuestra Señora de Gua-dalupe tallada en madera. Esta imagen también sirve como un tabernáculo de exposición, la Eucaristía está colocada en la parte donde es el vientre. En la aparición original de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe ella se le aparece a San Juan Diego como una mujer embarazada. En esta impresionante imagen nuestra Santísima Madre nuevamente se nos aparece llevando la alegría de su vien-tre, nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Una luz atrás de la Sagrada Hostia ilumina a nuestro Señor cuando venimos a adorarlo. Las bancas en la capilla originalmente vinieron del só-tano de la iglesia y fueron restauradas por los feligreses Sandro Loja y Ángel Uguña, junto con otros ayudantes. Ellos hicieron la restauración en su tiempo libre y solamente aceptaron reembolso por los artículos que usaron. El resto del trabajo lo donaron a la parroquia. En la capilla originalmente solamente cabían 10 perso-nas y ahora caben cómodamente 50 con la posibilidad de algunos más. La capilla se puede usar y todavía hay lugar para distancia-miento social lo que no se podía en la capilla anterior. Adentro de la capilla en la pared de la parte de atrás están las Estaciones del Via Crucis. En la pared a la derecha, están los Misterios del Rosario. Estas imágenes fueron hechas por las Hermanas Monásticas de Belén de la Asunción de la Virgen y San Bruno quienes tienen un monasterio en Livingston Manor, NY, donde yo a veces voy de retiro. Estas estaciones pueden ayudarles en el rezo del rosario o si desean hacer las Estaciones del Via Cru-cis abajo en la capilla. La capilla ahora incluye dos de los vitrales de la iglesia del sótano, el Encuentro del Niño Jesús en el Templo y el Milagro en las Bodas de Caná. En el mismo lado de las ventanas, tenemos varias imágenes. Tres son estatuas de la Sagrada Familia, Santa Ana (la madre de María) y San Francisco de Asís las cuales esta-ban originalmente en el santuario en la parte de afuera de la igle-sia, el cual fue derribado debido a problemas de inundación. Hay también una estatua nueva de San José Sánchez del Río (San Jose-lito), el joven martirizado en México en 1928 por negarse a denun-ciar a Jesucristo como Rey y Señor. El cuadro de San Juan Pablo II arrodillado en oración está en la pared entre las dos ventanas. Hay además un estante con velas para aquellos que deseen pren-der una vela por intenciones especiales. Una caja para donaciones está localizada junto a las velas. El crucifijo que estaba en la capilla anteriormente está en la pared principal. También instalamos un pequeño sistema de sonido y una cámara para permitirnos transmitir en vivo eventos desde la capilla. Es mi esperanza de que diferentes grupos pue-dan usar la capilla fuera de las horas normales de adoración. Cuando regresemos a más actividades aquí y clases, veo a las clases de la escuela de religión viniendo para lecciones y oración, el grupo juvenil usándola para oración y adoración y otros minis-terios también. Saint Josephine Bakhita

Known simply as Bakhita, Josephine was born in Darfur, Su-dan in 1869. She was part of the family of the chief and lived well with three brothers and three sisters. Still a girl, Bakhita

was kidnapped by slave traders: Arabs. She had to walk hun-dreds of miles, often beaten, with the kidnappers who sold her often and who forced her into the Islamic religion. She was

fortunate to be bought by a rich merchant as a maid to his daughters. With him, she was treated well usually, but then

beaten by one of the sons. In her late teens, Bakhita was bought by an Italian trader. She was a maid in his house for two years. When this man returned to Italy he took her with him; in Gen-

oa he gave Bakhita to a good Catholic woman who needed a helper for her children. When this woman had to go to Sudan for a long stay, she put her daughter and Bakhita in the convent

of the Canossian Sisters in Venice. But when her owner re-turned, she tried to force Bakhita to leave the Sisters and come

back to her. In 1890 Bakhita, in her twenties, was baptized, confirmed and received Holy Communion. The Archbishop who presided was Giovanni Sarto who would later be elected

as Pope Pius X. Three years later Bakhita became a novice in the Canossian Sisters and took her final vows in 1896. She was

loved for her gentle, smiling, helpful presence. Bakhita died in 1947. At the time of her funeral thousands of people came to say good-bye. She was canonized in the year 2000.

Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament

Our parish has had a long history of providing adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. One of the requirements to have exposition is that we must have at least two people present in order to

adore and protect our Lord. We are having a hard time ensur-ing coverage, hence we have not been having it as regularly as we want. We need people to volunteer to at least one hour

each week. Many of our regulars are nervous about coming out and that is understandable. If you are willing to take an

hour or more a week, please call the rectory at 718-672-4848 or email at bvmwoodside11377@aol.com to provide your name, phone number and times you are available. Thank you and

Consecration to St. Joseph

The Consecration to St. Joseph will start on Sunday, Febru-

ary 14. There will be a weekly prayer with Fr. O’Connor on

Monday nights at 7 pm through Zoom. If you are interested

in doing the Consecration to St. Joseph please stop by the

rectory to register and to obtain the book. The donation for

Adoradores del Santísimo Sacramento

Nuestra parroquia ha tenido una larga historia de proveer

adoración del Santísimo Sacramento. Uno de los requisitos

Santa Josefina Bakhita

Conocida simplemente como Bakhita, Josefina nació en

The First Vatican Council was the First Ecumen-ical Council to be Held at

St. Peter’s Basilica

Pope Pius IX’s pontificate spanned more than three dec-ades (1846-1878), the longest pontificate to date. This was a tumultuous time in Europe especially. In 1859, Charles Darwin published his On the Origin of Species, and in 1867 Karl Marx released Das Kapital. In response to these and other contemporary pieces, Pius IX issued his Syllabus of Errors, condemning what he judged to be a dangerous rationalism and creeping atheism. In 1867, he called for the First Vatican Council, so named because this was the first ecumenical council to be held in St. Pe-ter’s Basilica. The purpose of Vatican I was to address the various intellectual and political challenges of the age.

El Primer Concejo Vaticano fue el Primer Concejo Ecuménico llevado a cabo en la

Basílica de San Pedro

El pontificado del Papa Pio IX duró más de tres décadas (1846-18778) el pontificado más largo hasta ahora. Este fue un tiempo tumultuoso especialmente en Europa. En 1859, Charles Darwin publicó su Sobre el Origen de las Especies, y en 1867 Karl Marx publicó Das Kapital. En respuesta a estas y otras piezas contemporáneas, Pio IX emitió su Sílabas de Errores, condenando lo que él juzgó ser un racionalismo peligroso y un ateísmo progresivo. En 1867, llamó al Primer Concejo Vaticano, llamado así porque este fue el concejo ecuménico llevado a cabo en la Basílica de San Pedro.
