My dear parishioners, Last week in the bulletin, we posted a reminder about the requirements to be a godparent for baptism or sponsor for confirmation. Those requirements are the minimum. Serious thought should be given into dis-cerning who you want to be your child’s godparents, as being a godparent is a lifelong commitment. I have been teaching confirmation classes for over twenty years and every year I do a survey of the candidates. I ask, by a show of hands, how many of them actually know their baptismal godparents. Only half raise their hands. I ask those with their hands up, to keep them up if they have spoken to their godpar-ents within the last year. Only half of those keep their hands up. That means, consistently, only about twenty-five percent of my confirmation students have regular contact with their baptismal godparents. That makes me sad for them. It is the hope of the Church, that the sponsor for confirmation will be one of the baptismal godpar-ents. It would show the connection between the two sacraments but also that the godparent has been jour-neying with the candidate throughout the years. When I celebrate infant baptisms, I tell the godparents that it is my hope for the child that when the child makes con-firmation, it will be a hard decision to choose between the two of them, because both have given great exam-ples of living the Christian faith. I have had the privilege of being a baptismal godfather four times. I have been asked other times, but have denied the request because I did not think I could be attentive sufficiently to the potential godchild. It pains me that I am not able to see my godchildren more but I do make a point of getting together with them several times during the year. I want my godchildren to not only remember who I am, but also that I am there for them, that I love them, that I pray for them and that I want to be a good example for them. I know that one day when I go before the Lord Jesus, he is going to ask me what kind of godfather I have been. I want to be able to honestly say that I gave my godchildren a good Christian example and that I tried to lead them to Christ. Being a godparent is a great gift and a great responsibility. Only those who are truly committed to the Catholic faith should be asked. Do not ask someone to be a godparent just because you like him or her. Ask yourself, will this person lead my son or daughter to Jesus? If not, then you may already have your answer. God bless,

Mis queridos feligreses, En el boletín la semana pasada, publicamos un recordatorio acerca de los requisitos para ser padrino de bautizo o de confirmación. Esos requisitos son el mínimo. Se debe pensar seriamente en discernir quienes ustedes quieren que sean los padrinos de sus hijos, ya que ser padrino es un compromiso para toda la vida. Yo he estado enseñando las clases de confirma-ción por más de veinte años y cada año hago una encues-ta de los candidatos. Les pregunto, levantando las manos, cuantos de ellos actualmente conocen a sus padrinos de bautizo. Solamente la mitad levantan sus manos. Les pido a los que tienen la mano levantada, que la mantengan levantada si ellos han hablado con sus padrinos dentro del último año. Solamente la mitad de ellos mantienen la mano levantada. Eso quiere decir, consecuentemente, que solamente cerca del veinticinco porciento de mis estu-diantes de confirmación tienen contacto regular con sus padrinos de bautizo. Eso me hace sentir triste por ellos. Es la esperanza de la Iglesia, que el padrino de confirmación sea uno de los padrinos de bautizo. No solamente quiero que mis ahijados recuerden quien soy, sino también que estoy aquí para ellos, que los quiero, que oro por ellos y que quiero ser un buen ejem-plo para ellos. Yo se que un día cuando vaya frente al Señor Jesús, El me va a preguntar qué clase de padrino he sido. Quiero poder decir honestamente que le di a mis ahijados un buen ejemplo Cristiano y que traté de guiar-los a Cristo. Ser padrino es un gran don y una gran responsa-bilidad. Solamente a aquellos que están verdaderamente comprometidos con la fe Católica se les debe pedir ser padrinos. No le pidan a alguien que sea padrino simple-mente porque te cae bien. Pregúntense, ¿será que esta persona va a guiar a mi hijo a Jesús? Si no, entonces pue-de que ya tenga la respuesta. Que Dios les bendiga,

Visiting Clergy From time to time, people have priests come and visit from other dioceses or from outside of the country. If you desire the visiting priest to celebrate Mass or baptism or speak at a parish group here (or any parish in the United States), the visiting priest must present a current letter of good standing from his bishop or from his religious superior if he belongs to a community. We then send a copy of the letter to the diocese. Any priest who desires to minister in any way and does not have a letter of good standing will not be permitted to serve. It does not matter if they are only here on vacation, just passing through or live in one of the neigh-boring dioceses, a letter must be presented. This precaution is necessary to help protect our people. We welcome all visiting clergy; they just need to have a letter of good standing.

The Bridge to Life. Baby Bottle Campaign The Bridge to Life is a pregnancy resource center with locations in Flushing and Astoria. Bridge provides pro-life counseling to preg-nant women who are considering an abortion, as well as distrib-uting material assistance (such as clothing, strollers, car seats, books) to thousands of mothers and their children each year. All services are provided free of charge to our clients. The Baby Bottles will be available by the doors as you exit the church starting today. Kindly take one or more home, fill it up with coin, currency, and/or check. Please return all bottles by the weekend of November 23/24, 2019. Thank you in advance for your support!

Si usted desea que el sacerdote visi-tante celebre la Misa, o un bautizo o que hable en un grupo parroquial aquí (o cualquier parroquia en los Estados Unidos), el sacerdote visi-tante debe presentar una carta actual de buen comportamiento de su obispo o del superior si pertenece a una comunidad religiosa. Nosotros enviaremos una copia de la carta a la diócesis. Cualquier sacerdote que desee hacer un ministerio y no tenga la carta de buen comportamiento no se le permitirá servir. Our Church History...

Emperor Constantine Legalized Christianity In 306, the young Constantine was made a co-emperor and began a long trek from Britain, through Gaul, and into Italy to defeat his rival Maxentius to claim sole imperial power. The night before the battle at the Milvian Bridge outside Rome in October 312, Constantine had a vision in which Jesus in-structed him to adorn the shields of his soldiers with the Chi-Rho symbol, shorthand for the word Christ. Another version of the story tells that Constantine heard the message, In Hoc Signo Vinces, meaning, “In this Sign You Will Conquer.” Constantine obeyed the directions given in the vision, and after emerging victorious in battle, prohibited further persecu-tions of Christians. He issued the Edict of Milan in 313 that granted the Church legal standing, thus putting an end to Christian persecution in the Roman Empire.
