For most of us there are plenty of vegetable and fl ower seedlings available at the garden cen-ter to choose from in spring so you may not feel the need to start any seeds. However, there may be a tomato variety that you want to try that you’ve never seen available as a seedling, or an uncommon annual fl ower that you want to try out. In this case, you’ll need to start your own. “But how…and when do we start our seeds?” For instance, a tomato seed pack might say, “For best results, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before planting time.”

The beginner will say, “Yeah, well what day is that?” The average last frost date for the Al-bany Airport is May 7th. That date seems wildly optimistic to me. We often get frosts after May 7th. For our area, I think May 15th - 20th makes more sense, and there’s no reason to rush planting only to risk a late frost. Tomatoes and peppers stall when temperatures go below 50°F, so waiting to plant them often results in an earlier harvest than from plants subjected to too many cold nights early in the season. In my garden in the Glenville Hills, I generally shoot for planting the week before Memorial Day.

The next step is to get a calendar and combine the information on the seed packs to come up with a logical schedule for starting our seeds indoors.

First mark ‘Planting Week’ (May 15th-20th) on your calendar.

Then mark the week previous to ‘Planting Week’ “1 week” meaning ‘one week before plant-ing’. Mark the week previous to that “2 weeks” and so on until you’ve marked up to ’10 weeks’ before planting. 10 weeks before planting should end up being second week of March (6th - 12th). Now look at the information on the seed packs to see how many “weeks before planting” we need to get the seeds started indoors. For instance, here’s the info on the pack of eggplant seeds:

Now that we’ve got a calendar custom made for our growing season, we can easily fi gure out when to start these seeds indoors...sometime in mid-March.

You can tape the seed packs to your calendar on the week that they need to get sown or just write them into the correct week on the calendar. There are a few, like onions and leeks, that need to get started 10 weeks before our frost-free planting date.

The real fl urry of seed starting occurs between 6 and 8 weeks before planting. On the calen-dar, that’s the last couple of weeks of March and the fi rst week of April.

There are some seeds that only need to be started a only two or three weeks prior to planting week, like theses zinnias, so you really need to read the directions on the seed packs.

You might be thinking, “Why not start them as early as possible so the seedlings will be further along when I plant them?” If you have a greenhouse you might get away with that. Most of us are starting our seeds on a sunny windowsill or under grow lights. Space is at a premium and the larger plants crowd each other and get leggy as they compete for the light. Leggy, spindly transplants will struggle to survive once they get outside. It’s better to have smaller, sturdier plants when it’s time to put them in the ground, so follow the directions on the seed pack and you’ll have the right size plant at the right time.

There are plenty of vegetables that don’t need to wait for “planting week”to get started from seed directly in the garden. Peas seeds like to get planted at the beginning of April as soon as the soil can get worked. Spinach, chard, radishes, potatoes (from seed potatoes) and many others can also be planted before our “frost free” planting date in mid-May. Indeed, most of what we call cool weather crops can produce 2 crops per season; one from an early sowing for early summer harvest and another mid-summer sowing for a fall crop. This is something that new gardeners need to understand. I think many new gardeners have the belief that you “plant in spring and harvest in the fall”. This is true for some vegetables like potatoes and some of the larger tomato types. The real value (savings) to be gained from vegetable gardening is from these crops that we seed directly in the garden. Lettuce and all the other greens like chard and spinach are good examples. Radishes are also very rewarding since you can sow a row every two weeks and they grow and mature in less than a month. Once you go through a season with well timed plantings you’ll see that it is possible to get a great deal of food from even a small plot. Learn to read the information on the seed packs and trust the seeds. This is the way to really make you garden pay maximum dividends. Thanks for the read.

There are many things the public knows about Saint Patrick’s Day, but there’s much they may not know about the holiday or Irish-American heritage for that matter. Here are some facts and trivia that might surprise even the most devoted of Patty’s Day revelers.

* Despite St. Patrick being alive centuries earlier, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations didn’t begin until 1737.

* More people of Irish heri-tage live in the United States than currently live in all of Ireland. Irish-Americans liv-ing stateside predominantly reside in the North Atlantic states.

* Saint Patrick angered the Celtic Druids many times by converting pagans to Christi-anity. The Druids put him in jail on numerous occasions.

* Green is not the offi cial color affi liated with Saint Patrick. It is really blue. However, green became a

Seldom-heard Saint Patrick’s

Day facts

familiar hue during the nine-teenth century more for being associated with the magic of Irish legends than Saint Patrick himself.

* The three-leaf shamrock has more historical signifi cance with regards to Saint Patrick’s day than a four-leaf clover. That’s because the three leaves were believed to be used by St. Patrick to explain the Christian doctrine of the Holy Trinity, where God

exists as three persons.

* For 67 years, Saint Patrick’s Day was a “dry” holiday in Ire-land. James O’Mara, a member of Irish parliament, introduced a bill in 1903 that made Saint Patrick’s Day a religious holi-day in the country. Therefore, local pubs were obligated to close. The law was overturned in 1970.

* According to their Web site,

Hallmark has been selling

green Saint Patrick’s Day

cards since the early 1920s,

now selling as many as 15 mil-

lion annually.

* Contrary to popular belief,

Ireland does not top the list

with respect to showing Irish

pride. New York City boasts

the largest parade honoring the

holiday and Irish heritage.

St. Patrick’s Day Is Coming (SPM Wire) As the nation celebrates this St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th with frothy pints of Guinness, many will raise glasses to recognize the hallowed patron saint of Ireland (who is actually British!).

While those glasses are raised, consider cheering a few oth-er Irishmen who made contributions to the world. Did you know an Irishman, John Philip Holland, invented the subma-rine? Color photography was invented by Ireland’s John Joly. And guided missiles, the modern tractor, and even a cure for Leprosy were all invented by Irishmen. What is corned beef?

At least once a year people gather to enjoy a dish that is widely associated with Irish culture. Corned beef is a meat that is customarily served alongside potatoes and cabbage. Many people understand the “beef” part of the corned beef name, but do not understand the “corned” part.

Corning refers to pickling meat in brine. Brines, which are composed of salt water, were often used to preserve meats when refrigeration was not available.

According to the Department of Agriculture, the word “corn” comes from Anglo-Saxon times when meat was dry-cured in coarse “corns” of salt. Pellets of salt were rubbed into the meat to preserve it.

Corned beef brines today contain more than just salt. They may have different spices and fl avorings to add to the taste of the meat.

EYES ON HEALTH

FOOD AND VITAMINS TO IMPROVE EYESIGHT

To assure that your eyes are working at their maximum potential, you should consume the fol-lowing foods and vitamins: VITAMIN A (RETINOL): Found in plants with carotenes, such as carrots, cabbage and let-tuce; also found in butter, eggs, sh oil and liver. If you don’t consume enough Vitamin A, you can develop nyctalopia (night blindness) and / or dry eyes. VITAMIN B2 (RIBOFLAVIN): Necessary for development of healthy skin and eye tissue. This vitamin is found in green vegetables, sh, liver, cheese and milk. NIACIN (NICOTINIC ACID): Without nia-cin, Vitamin B2 cannot function properly. Niacin is found in whole grains, enriched bread and ce-reals, yeast and lean meat.

“Empties for Animals" Campaign To Run All Year!Goldstein Auto Group

Helping Mohawk Hudson Humane Society ALBANY, NY (02/29/2012)- What started out to be a Super bowl campaign to bene t The Mohawk Hud-son Humane Society has snowballed into a year round program for The Goldstein Family Auto Group, Thanks to the hundreds of donations of cans and bottles The Goldstein Family Auto Group has received from the community, coupled with the MHHS 125th Anniversary, Goldstein Auto is committed to continuing their part of the campaign year round. Since coming on board, The Goldstein Fam-ily Auto Group has set up depositories in each of their four dealerships to help collect cans and bottles from patrons, sta , and families, wanting to help the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society in Menands, New York. The cans and bottles turn into dollars for the organization to help care for and place the animals they have at the shelter. "Our Goal for the 125 Anniversary is to encourage the

community to help collect 1,562,500 which would translate into $125,000 to MHHS. " said Stefanie Goldstein, a principal in the Goldstein Family Auto Group and daughter of President Alan Goldstein. "This is only 637,500 more bottles and cans than last year. If everyone continues the momentum we have had already, we can do it!" Last year the Society's "Empties for Animals" program generated over $74,000 in revenue. Individual members of the community, school groups and other organizations dropped o more than 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans based upon the originating distributor, which in turn generated 8 cents per can/bottle instead of the regular 5-cent redemption fee paid at stores. Monies from the programs were used to bene t the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Soci-ety in 2011. "As an added incentive The Goldstein Family has commissioned our trucks and driv-ers to make pick ups from around their area neighborhoods, restaurants, schools, event destinations, anywhere they need us to" added Stefanie. "If everyone who does not save their recyclables currently starts saving them, we can make a huge di er-ence." With Earth Day just a few months away, weekly totals received at all Goldstein Auto locations will increase as the group does plan to participate in "A Billion Acts of Green" one of the Earth Day organizations April programs. They are using the power of their advertising, website, facebook page and show rooms to spread the word to recycle and help save abandon, elderly and abused animals rescued and cared for by The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society.People can drop o their cans and bottles to any of the four Goldstein locations:

Lecture and Book Signing ROTTERDAM JCT. – Written by Robert Moss, “The Interpreter” (now in paperback) is the third in the Cycle of the Iroquois trilogy. On Saturday, March 31, at 2pm, Moss will speak about “The Interpreter” and sign copies of all three books in the trilogy at the Mabee Farm Historic Site on Route 5S in Rotterdam Junction. The work is a visionary journey into the crucible in which America was born and a tale of love and war that shares the story of a master shaman and his twin apprentices - the Mohawk dreamer called Island Woman and the young immigrant Conrad Weise - who become critical players in their peoples’ struggle for survival. Through its pages, we are able to fi nd ourselves in another time, and in other worlds. Known for his vivid storytelling, Moss, a novelist, journalist, historian, and lifelong dream explorer, describes in his new preface how his Cycle of the Iroquois - Fire Along the Sky, The Firekeeper, and The Interpreter - began with dreams and visions in which an ancient Iroquois arendiwanen (woman of power) insisted on teaching him in her own language, until he was obliged to learn it. Call 887-5073 for more information. $5 per person; Schenectady County Historical Society members admitted free. (P)
