BOOK REVIEW

Once again Frederick orsyth has created

something most o us would not have thought about. The book takes us through the heart o spy network and manhunt that goes behind thescreen. It is truly a roller coaster ride with ampleinormation that takes us through USA, UK,Pakistan, Somalia and Israel.

The author writes about usage o Drones inMilitary operations and is really interesting. Some plots and incidents may seem ctional but are necessary to connect story. This is a perect

sequence to The Aghan... Thoroughly enjoyed.

TAMIL BOOK EXHIBITION Tamil books rom 32 dierent publishers were exhibited in a stall or our members on the club day.Plans are aoot to include some o the popular tamil novels in our library. Members may suggest list o books o their choice to be purchased or our library.

 A HOTSHOT FROM CHENNAI

V. Kanthi , daughter of our member Mrs. Valli Valliappan (M. No. 1567 )talks about her experiences at therecent IBL, being chosen for the Hyderabad Hotshots, and her hopes for the upcoming Senior Nationals.

Even as she talks to me at the Alumni Club in Chennai beore her practice session with an up-and-coming men’s player, V. Kanthi is busy with her mobile phone.

Though weeks have passed since the Indian Badminton League concluded in Mumbai, with theHyderabad Hotshots (HH) emerging triumphant, V. Kanthi, a member o the Hyderabad team,is still to get over the IBL hangover. “We still miss each other’s company,” says the 18-year-old

badminton player rom Chennai even as shetexts her riends rom Hyderabad Hotshots.

As the second women’s singles player, ater SainaNehwal, or the Hyderabad ranchise, Kanthidid not get to play a match, but enjoyed theatmosphere thoroughly. “IBL”, says Kanthi, “was

rst o all un. I made quite a ew riends. Spoketo Aparna (Balan) and Ashwini (Ponappa) andothers.”

Sitting on the sidelines, Kanthi says was a great learning experience, especially watching how senior players practice beore and ater a match, how they handle themselves, and how they interact with ans and media. “I learnt a lot though I didn’t play. I learnt a lot rom seniorplayers such as Saina (Nehwal) and Tauq(Hidayat). And Tauq was more than a player.

He taught us a lot.”

Pursuing a Bachelor o Business Administrationdegree rom MOP Vaishnav College or Women,Kanthi realises what the IBL has done tobadminton. “It has popularised the sport. Earlierin India, cricket was the most popular sport andnothing ater that. Now badminton is catchingup. All badminton players are happy about it,”she says.

With no proper system in Chennai, it was astruggle or Kanthi to nd a place to practice, shuttling between Kuala Lumpur and Chennai. Now ater the IBL exposure, her belie in hersel has grown maniold. “Beore IBL, I was not sure where I was. It has given me a lot more

condence. It has taught me to stay ocused,”she says.

Kanthi believes the deeat at the hands o DelhiSmashers in Lucknow was a wake-up call or theteam. “That loss,” she says, “inspired us to work

harder. We were a bit complacent in that match. The loss came at the right time.”

The Tamil Nadu numero uno women’s playerinitially didn’t believe it when her riends toldher about her being chosen or HH. “I was inMalaysia at that time. I didn’t expect to be inIBL because I had injured my back ater thesenior Nationals, and was training in KualaLumpur to get back into shape. Somebody sent me a message saying, ‘You are part o the team’. I didn’t believe it. Again somebody

texted me saying, ‘You have been auctioned.Go and check.’ Only then did I start collectinginormation about IBL,” says Kanthi, whoseauction price was $3000.

According to Kanthi, the spectator turn-out orevery match o HH was something shedidn’t expect. “The crowd was more thanexpected. Every match had ull attendance. In Hyderabad alone, there was a big demandor tickets. The stands were almost ull. Many

spectators brought drums which they beat  vocierously, as they enjoyed every moment o IBL,” says Kanthi, who is all praise or HH ownerPVP Group and HH’s support sta.

What irks Kanthi is the lack o courts or playersto practice and a proper system in Chennai.“We had to beg or courts. All the coaches arededicated, but where are the courts? Almost every State has got an academy/court with acoach, physio and tness trainer. There might be good coaches in Chennai, but they are

losing interest due to lack o courts. There are anumber o talented players, but nobody to guidethem,” she says.

Kanthi has been training in Kuala Lumpurunder the watchul eyes o chie coach

Yogendran at New Vision Badminton Academy.

“It has been ruitul experience so ar. They havedone a lot to correct my strokes,” she says.Having missed many All-India tournamentslast year, Kanthi is keen to take part in as many tournaments as possible this season. Besidesshe wants to perorm to her ull potential in theorthcoming Senior Nationals to be held in New Delhi. “I want to do really well there,” she says.Source: The Hindu, September 25, 2013
