Nearly one in three 3rd graders in Minnesota is failing to reach basic levels of literacy. You can help change that. As a Minnesota Reading Corps literacy tutor, you can help change this statistic and the lives of struggling readers. As the nation’s largest state AmeriCorps program, we are recognized because our tutors are getting results with the students they serve and are helping to ensure that all children are successful readers by the end of third grade. They are parents, grandparents, recent college graduates, mid-‐career professionals and retirees who may want to get more involved at our school, explore a new career in education, re-‐enter the workforce or give back to their community. We train our tutors prior to service. Benefits of serving include:
• Training and coaching in research-‐based literacy practice methods
• Impacting the lives of children who need extra support to become proficient readers
• B iweekly living allowance of about $484 (for full-‐time)
• Education award of up to $5,645 Serve to grow. One year. This year. Now is the time to apply for 2015-‐2016 positions. Strong preference is given to tutors who can start serving August 9, 2015. “Follow Along Program”For infants and children up to 48 months of age
Babies and young children grow and learn at their own rate. The Follow Along Program can help you know if your child is playing, talking, growing, moving, and behaving similar to other children of the same age. Some children may need special help to grow up healthy and learn skills such as sitting, walking, or talking. The this program can help you know if this is true for your child.
WHAT IS THE FOLLOW ALONG PROGRAM?• A good way to learn about your child’s health
and development.• A fun way to get ideas about “what to teach”
and “at what age” to teach it.• A simple way to ask questions about how your
child is hearing, moving, seeing, playing, talking, learning, growing, and acting.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR NATIONAL SCREEN-FREE WEEK?
APRIL 30-MAY 06 2012SCREENFREE.ORG
Big Lake Early Childhood
MAY 4 - 10, 2015
Big Lake Early Childhood will join thousands of schools, libraries, and community groups nationwide in a coordinated effort to encourage millions of Americans to turn off televisions, smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles for seven days and turn on the world around them. Screen-Free Week is a chance for children to read, play, think, create, be more physically active, and to spend more time with friends and family.
On average, preschool children spend over four and a half hours a day consuming screen media, while older children spend over seven hours a day including multitasking. Excessive screen time is linked to a number of problems for children, including childhood obesity, poor school performance, and problems with attention span. Screen-Free Week is a great way to jump-start our kids into more reading, learning, and active play. It’s also a lot of fun!
