Americans need to connect the dots

between money and medical care

Across diverse demographics and income

levels, American workers say they have

enough information to get the right health

care for their families. However, they don’t

ask health care providers, “How much will it

cost?” nearly often enough. Those five words

can be the difference in hundreds of dollars in

medical bills—which can lead to financial

crisis. Bankruptcy caused by medical debt

affects 1.7 million Americans each year.

Not my money, not my problem

High earners are able—but clearly unwilling—to take the lead

in making cost considerations top of mind.

Mother knows best

Parents—whether single or married—are more likely than

non-parents to feel confident in their health care navigation

skills.

Humans are highly social beings, leaning

heavily on camaraderie and community

to be happy and successful. This social

nature extends to workplace health

promotion programs, as employees with

access to a workplace wellness program

and support from their managers are

more likely to commit to healthy habits.

If you build it, they will come

Education affects inspiration

As education levels

decrease, inspiration

increases. Employees

with lower education

levels—particularly those

with only a high-school

education—are 8% more

likely to be inspired by

workplace wellness

than employees who are

highly educated.

Healthy workplaces inspire engagement

* Engaged employees are characterized by highly favorable perceptions related to workplace

teamwork, manager effectiveness, trust in senior leaders, trust in coworkers, retention,

alignment with goals, feeling valued, individual contribution, job satisfaction and benefits.

Managers need to do more walking, less talking

86% of employees trust

their senior leaders. Yet,

just 60% of employees say

their manager supports

their health.

Why? Likely because

although nearly 70% of

employees get frequent

communication about

health and wellness, just

55% say their leaders

model healthy behavior.

Employees remain attached to company-sponsored

health benefits, despite wider market options ushered

in by health care reform

When the Affordable Care Act first was

signed into law in 2010, many experts

predicted the law would break the familiar

and long-standing coupling of employment

and health insurance. However, this has not

materialized—nor does it appear to be

something that workers want. Rather,

employees report a strong attachment to

employer-sponsored health insurance, and

by extension, their employer.

Health coverage creates lasting ties

When it comes to health benefits, most employees are smitten:

Employees value open, frequent benefits

communication from leaders—but companies

missed an opportunity with health care reform

Everyone wants leaders who are straight

shooters—people who will tell the truth

early and often, even if the information is

negative. The more often employees hear

from managers and company leaders about

their health benefits, the more their trust in

those individuals rises. This remains the

case particularly when benefits changes are

complex and/or contentious, like coverage

shifts sparked by the Affordable Care Act.

More communication correlates to more trust

Among employees who say

their manager supports their

efforts to be healthy, 83% say

there is open communication

between employees and

managers. When managers

don’t support healthy living,

43% report an open dialogue.

With communication, ACA is the elephant in the room
