BSLC Mission: To connect family, friends, neighbors
and community with our Beautiful Savior.
BSLC Vision: To become a congregation of committed
disciples growing in faith in God, and known in our
community for our spirit, hospitality, and compassion.
At the August Quarterly Meeting, I asked those in attendance to write down three things
that they felt this congregation should be focused on for the near future. I compiled the
answers and put them on cards that have hung in Werner Hall for the last few weeks
with the invitation to go over and group the cards as you saw them interconnecting with
other cards. The collage of ideas has shifted over time with the cards migrating and
being organized in different ways. It has solidified into a ‘picture’ of what we should
focus on.
The image I see is one of a Tree of Faith: Rooted, Reaching, and Bearing Fruit. We
have planted the tree of faith and it has rooted (Faith Formation). Now is the time to
help it flourish by helping it branch out to the community (Outreach/Service) and bear its
fruit (youth & family). We are rooted in our faith in Jesus Christ, but we must continue
our study and reflection on what that means- discipleship. Nourished in our faith we
reach out, sharing and caring, showing the love of God in Jesus Christ in the world.
Finally, like all living things, this tree knows that it must bear fruit and bring in the next
generation. [There were two other ‘groupings’ that some might see as distinct. One is,
as they are more outcomes than process (bigger church, more members, more money,
etc.). The other is a collection that I see rightly by the collection of faith formation and
outreach. That deals with what we might call invitation
What are we going to do as a congregation to live out our Mission and Vision as we
focus our efforts to Root, Reach, and Bear fruit? How will they all interplay? How will
our Ministry Teams organize themselves and plan to better live out all of this? How will
the Church Council organize to live this out? How will our Mission Plan be affected by
all of this? How will the staff prioritize effort augment the congregation’s future focus?
Lots of questions as we go forward, but we go forward in Faith!
So some possible ways to respond to those questions:
1) Ministry Teams- evaluate what you do and how you do it. Dream, design, and
plan ways of going forward using the Mission, Vision and Focus. Look at your
Mission Planning forms and plan ahead.

CHILDREN'S COMMUNITY CHORUS ~ Begins September 14th
An exciting new offering for the community is coming to Beautiful Savior. Jeremy Knight, our
Director of Music, will be offering a Community Children's Choir program starting in the Fall. It
will be for any child, grades 1st thru 6th. The curriculum will have two semesters, a fall and
spring. Each semester will end with a concert opened to the community. The program will teach
children basic music and singing skills and introduce them to the joys of being in an choir. They
will learn and perform a mixture of secular and sacred music. This is a wonderful opportunity for
not only the children in our church but a great way to engage with and invite children and families
from our community at large! Registration is still available. For more details, or to sign up, please
contact Jeremy Knight (623) 986-7996 or [email protected]
Faith 5 model! There is a workshop offered in Estes Park, Colorado,
October 5-8. It is a cross generation workshop
designed to be a training and resource to do
programming like "Sunday School for All Ages".
Some of you attended last year. Jeremy Knight, our
Faith Formation Coordinator, will be attending this
year and would love to have more volunteers attend
with him. The info for the workshop is at the website
listed below. Please contact Jeremy if this is
something you would like to attend.

Dear BSLC Congregation,
Why did I say yes to running for the
church council? Honestly, who can
say “no” to Don Swanson? Actually,
I have been asked to consider
running several times in the past, but
each time, I either had a valid reason why I couldn’t
or I just flat out thought I didn’t want to be on it.
After all, haven’t we all heard horror stories
regarding council meetings lasting well into the
night, bickering among council members, getting to
see the “underbelly” of the church? Being on
church council has a reputation that precedes it.
When Don asked me to consider running for council
this time, maybe it was the point I was at in my life
that made me ask myself, “Why not?”. I thought
about the people on council already. This is a group
of people who I really enjoy. I thought about our
pastor. I realized that I have so much confidence in
Pastor David’s leadership and ability to guide
discussions in a positive, productive direction. And
I thought about what my schedule looked like. Yes,
I had Monday evenings free, and after all, it was
only one Monday evening a month.
Since joining council in January, I have actually
enjoyed the meetings and the people. I feel that I
am helping the church move forward in a positive,
growing direction, and I like being a part of that.
Please, if someone asks you if you would like to
consider running for council, ask yourself, “Why
not?”, and then take that step forward in a new
direction..

CONGREGATION UPDATE
Pastor’s Note (Continued)
CHURCH COUNCIL
meets Monday
September 14, 2015
at 6:00 p.m. Meetings are
open to all.
2) Potential Council Members- elections are
coming up. Prayerfully consider if there is
something here that you see God calling you
to help lead us toward.
3) Everyone- prayerfully consider how you can
support these efforts. Do you have ideas, con-
nections, resources, etc. that can help us share
the Good News of Jesus Christ in these excit-
ing ways?
4) Realize that there is not ONE WAY of doing
any of these Focus areas. They are wide and
can cover a lot of ground. If you see some-
thing missing, speak up, volunteer, fill the
missing gap, and grow the Ministry!
Let me simply say this in closing. I was blown away
by what I saw handed in. This congregation’s heart is
in the right place. I saw a desire to ground ourselves
in our faith in Jesus Christ and to go out and do some-
thing with it! I look forward with a great deal of confi-
dence (literally- “with faith”) to a future with hope as
we seek to become committed disciples that are con-
necting ourselves and those around us with our Beauti-
ful Savior.
Remember that God loves you and so do I!

GROW YOUR FAITH
What is Via de Cristo?
VIA de CRISTO is:
· An opportunity to grow in faith and in spirituality
· A deeper understanding of the teachings of Jesus and how we can serve Him.
· An experience of living and sharing with others in a loving and caring Christian community and
realizing that this can be extended into our own environment
· A continuing community that gives support and encouragement empowering the renewed Christians
to persevere in carrying out their Baptismal vows
- This Year’s week-end is Co-ed (both men and women attend the same week-end) and the dates are
Thursday evening Oct. 15th thru Sunday afternoon Oct. 18, 2015. Interested in attending – talk to:
Howard and Suzanne Squires or Pastor David. There is no cost to you but there is an application to
fill out to participate.

ADULT EDUCATION Book of Genesis Bible Study The first several chapters of Genesis are full of stories which we know very well: the Creation, the story of Adam and Eve and their fall, Cain and Abel, Noah and the flood, Babel, and then the great story of Abraham and Sarah. We are going to take a deep look at these stories, and how they impact our lives as followers of Jesus of Nazareth. We will find that the issues of environment, sinfulness, sexuality, worship, and how we inter-act with one another are relevant today. Please join us. The class will be lead by Pr. Richard Mauthe, a new member of Beautiful Savior. Richard is a retired pas-tor and was adjunct faculty of the Lutheran School of Theology at Philadelphia. Two classes offered will be offered beginning Monday, September 21st at 7:00 pm and Wednesday, September 23rd at 10:00 a.m.

What does it mean to be a “committed disciple”? The
word ‘disciple’ actually means a student. In baptism
we become lifelong students of the rabbi, Jesus Christ.
In baptism, parents and sponsors made promises, in
“confirmation” we take them upon ourselves.
However, our learning is not over, not if we are
‘committed disciples.’ Starting September 20th, after
service we will have “Sunday School for ALL Ag-
es.” (More info on the next page.) Following that, we
will have our first get together of our Affirmation of
Baptism class. This class is open to anyone from 7th
Grade on up. (For 7th and 8th Graders this is what
used to be known as “Confirmation”.)
This class is an opportunity to learn, relearn, contem-
plate, and grow in faith. We will look at figures of
faith from the Bible, wrestle with questions of faith,
and learn some tools of the faith. I also invite all to
participate in the memory work and other exercises
meant to work our faith muscles.
For our 7th and 8th Graders, welcome to “Affirmation
of Baptism.” For all others, including the parents, I
invite your attendance as well. So if it has been
awhile since confirmation class for you, or you never
did, or you are simply seeking a way to renew, rein-
force, reform- this is for you.
So I invite you to commit to growth in faith, join us
for Sunday School for ALL Ages as our starter and
then we will break off to continue. We will be fin-
ished by noon.
Contact Pr. David with any questions.

Sunday School for ALL Ages September 20th following service will be our kickoff for our
Sunday School for ALL Ages. It is an intergenerational
faith formation time that will be accessible to our kids, and
an experience for adults. It is meant to be a time where we
bind together in fellowship, and learn from one another.
We will have a time of sharing, learning, prayer, and an
EVENT that will help us learn and grow in different ways.
If you are interested in joining in this exciting adventure and
become a volunteer leader, we will be meeting after church
on September 6th.
Otherwise, join us September 20th after church for Sunday
School for ALL Ages. The EVENT will need you to bring a
Bible that you can work in and on. If you don’t have one,
and would like to order one, please contact the office as we
will be handing out Bibles that day to our kindergarten, 3rd,
and 7th graders.

Attention Thrivent
Members: You have a couple of other ways to give and be supportive
1. Are you dedicating your "Thrivent Choice" money?
2. Do you know you have TWO $250 Thrivent Action Team opportunities every year?
The Simply Giving® Program endorsed by Thrivent Federal Credit Union
Would you find it helpful to have your offerings drawn from your bank account as you do
other monthly drafts? The Simply Giving Program endorsed by Thrivent Federal Credit
Union is for people who wish to have offerings transferred electronically to their church’s
account. You do not have to be a Thrivent member or use their financial products to par-
ticipate.
This is especially helpful for people who travel and want to keep their intended offerings
up-to-date, rather than making up the difference later. Members at Beautiful Savior have
enjoyed using this convenient giving opportunity for years. Contact the church office for
more details.
If you changed your pledge for 2015, please let the office know so that it can be adjusted.

What Will Be Your Legacy?
A legacy can come in many forms. It can come from the way you lead your life, the
way you share the word of God, and by the way you share your resources given to you
by God. For those who walk in faith, all three of these ways of leaving a legacy are
important. To learn more about how you can leave a legacy from your resources,

people. We are looking for those who would serve a shut-in (or two),
and those who would be willing to be ‘on-call’ for hospital visits.
