Pastor, I’m not sure how to pray. You know what, you are not alone in that concern. “Lord, teach us to pray.” The first disciples asked Jesus if there was a way to pray. We get what we know as the Lord’s Prayer in response to that question. In Matthew 6 and in Luke 11 we hear two versions. They are not the same. The early church kept both versions in the Bible as it was composed. Why? I think they were both kept in to do a couple of things. One is that the two versions highlight different basic understandings of prayer and God (read them both yourself and see). The other is that it shows that there isn’t only one way to pray. Prayer is meant to be a simple conversation with the God who is with us, knows us, and cares for us. It is an opportunity to bring to voice concerns and thanksgivings, and share them openly. It is an acknowledgement of the presence and provision of God, and an opportunity for us to lift up and let go. In the FAITH5 process, you have shared highs and lows (joys and concerns) with one another. You read some of the scripture and have talked about how you heard it interact with the shared highs and lows. Now is the time to pray and celebrate and seek consolation. Pastor, how do I pray? You are to pray the shared joys and concerns. Honor them as they are. Share them with God in a simple way. One way would be to say, “God, I thank you for…” and, “God, I ask you for…”. You can hold hands as you do it if you want to add a human touch. Pray for each other. In fact, you should pray for someone else’s highs and lows, and they (or someone else), should pray for yours. There is something simply amazing and powerful hearing someone else pray for you and what you shared. As you share, read, talk, and pray, you connect to one another, you strengthen your faith (and each other’s), and just grow as beloved children of God. May you do this every night, and may this happen in every home, so all are reminded of God’s love and presence, each and every day. Remember that God loves you, and so do I!

Pastor David

CONGREGATION UPDATE

Dear BSLC, Goodbye to Council! Now I step down after two terms, including one as Vice President, and talk to prospective members. Some express hesitation – “I don’t think

I can do it.” Ah, but most of you can, I think. First, be nice to people. Now, that is easy. Second, listen and hear them out. That is not a hard job. Look at practical problems with an eye to try to solve them. Well, that is sometimes more difficult. But, as in most everything in our Church, know that everyone with you wants to help. We haven’t solved every problem, and we really need to grow our Congregation to solve the most difficult one, but we are working together. I was chosen as a new member of Congregation, as was Hank this year. We are not frozen in the past, nor flailing about somewhere. If there is anything we need now, it is to grow and to reveal to others our confidence and faith in Jesus and our joy in Pastor David, who is certainly someone we are lucky to have found. We are a support for one another and a resource to others. By our faith, our help to those around us, such as in Sunday dollars, the Boy Scout program the Prime Timers gatherings, and many others, we are not stagnant, and we are good Lutherans – as they say, proud, but not too proud. I am working hard on our Germany trip, and we will have a fun and spiritual journey. Thank you all, from the bottom of my not always well functioning heart, for giving me your trust and your support. It gives an old man warmth in the joy of your friendship. We are a Christian Community, for every age of humankind. Gerry Kleinfeld

STEWARDSHIP

Attention Thrivent Members: You have a couple of other ways to give and be supportive 1. Are you dedicating your "Thrivent

Choice" money? 2. Do you know you have TWO $250

Thrivent Action Team opportunities every year?

If you don't know how to do those things, Diana Lonbeck will join us on February 1st during LLL to tell us how!

The Simply Giving® Program endorsed by Thrivent Federal Credit Union

Would you find it helpful to have your offerings drawn from your bank account as you do other monthly drafts? The Simply Giving Program endorsed by Thrivent Federal Credit Union is for people who wish to have offerings transferred electronically to their church’s account. You do not have to be a Thrivent member or use their financial products to participate.

This is especially helpful for people who travel and want to keep their intended offerings up-to-date, rather than making up the difference later. Members at Beautiful Savior have enjoyed using this convenient giving opportunity for years. Contact the church office for more details.

Want an easy way to do your commitment? Offerings can be scheduled on-line through Simply Giving.

Offering Envelopes for 2015 are Available in the Narthex.

CGA’s Increase Your Income A “charitable gift annuity” (CGA) can increase your income and benefit the church at the same time. A CGA is a financial instrument usually provided through a foundation like the ELCA Foundation. The income payout is based on age and is paid to you for the rest of your life. The older you are, the higher the payout. In addition, a portion of the payout is tax free income. You also

receive a charitable tax deduction immediately upon funding a CGA. The church benefits and so do you. You may fund a CGA with cash, stocks and other assets. For more information about Charitable Gift Annuities contact our congregation’s gift planner, Greg Shepherd, at: 909-910-6823 or [email protected]

The Cup of Cold Water: A NOISY OFFERING of your loose and spare change will be collected on the fourth Sunday of each month dur-ing worship. Funds collected will sup-port local benevolence and Good Gifts for the World (50/50). We challenge each of you to save up each month and make a difference.

MAKING CONNECTIONS

“SOUPER BOWL” SUNDAY

Support your favorite team! Money supports the Local ICS Food Bank. Youth will collect

donations as you leave the church!

25 years ago, this

opportunity began with a simple prayer:

“Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those without a bowl

of soup to eat.”

Since then, Over $100 million has been raised

for local charities across the country.

We work behind the scenes to set and clean-up communion every week. The time commitment is small,

and the rewards are great. Contact Marion Spain, 297-9253 for more information or training.

How Can You Serve

Spring Cleaning! We are looking for teams of 2-3 people to go through a particular room/ closet and help us 'inventory" it. What is in there? What needs to be tossed? What needs to be shredded? What needs to be replaced? Each space would only take a couple of hours for 2-3 people to go through it thoroughly. This will help the Council determine what is needed for a shred day, size of dumpster, or future organization of materials. See the Office for a list of areas available and further instructions. We are looking to have this accomplished by the Feb. 9th Council Meeting. Thank you for helping to beautify the campus and make it more user and visitor friendly!

Worship Assistant Training/Discussions During February, between services Pr. David would like to meet with those who help, and would like to help, with various worship leadership roles. It will be an opportunity for some training and discussion to famil-iarize people with the various ways people can assist in worship. We will meet in the sanctuary at 9:30.
