Worship at St. Andrew’s Village: 1 p.m.

On Ash Wednesday, March 5, we begin the season of Lent. The word Lent literally means, “Spring timefor the soul.” Lent is intended to be period where we are intentional about growing spiritually. In theearly church Lent was a forty day period of instruction for candidates about to be baptized. They wouldstudy during Lent and then be baptized on Easter morning so that they could celebrate the resurrectionon Easter morning with “new found joy.”

Why is this season of Lent important? If we become intentional in our reflecting, praying, studying, anddwelling on what Christ’s life, death, and resurrection means for us, then it becomes impossible not tobe in Holy Awe of God at what the resurrection means for our life.

I encourage you use this time as a time of spiritual growth. Give up something if you must, but most es-pecially add a spiritual discipline to your life. Most of all reflect on the life, death, and resurrection ofour Lord and its meaning for your life.

“Our Lord has written the promise of the resurrection not in books alone but in every leaf in springtime.” – Martin Luther

Blessings to you,

John Hogenson

Responding to the Transportation BarrierThe lack of reliable transportation in our suburban community is a majorcontributor to housing instability. Transportation was listed as the mostcritical issue for nearly 25% of Community Resource Center (CRC) guests, and nearly all CRC shelter guests strugglewith transportation issues. Transportation isa key factor in securing employment, meet-ing with case managers, mental healthproviders and transitional/supportive housingproviders, or visiting the food shelf, furthercompounding problems for those living inpoverty or facing homelessness. Transportation issues encountered by some of our recent families high-light the transportation barrier faced by many families in our shelter pro-gram and the broader community.

To address their childcare needs, a mother and father of two children setup their work schedules on opposite days, so one parent worked fourdays and the other worked three days. On her scheduled work day, themother took the morning express bus route from our Hope for the JourneyHome Shelter in Oakdale to Minneapolis. She transferred to a second busroute that took her to St. Paul and transferred again to a bus route thattook her to Roseville where her job was located. Her commuting timetook one hour and twenty minutes each way.

A single mother of four and former guest in our shelter program had herown vehicle. The older vehicle, in need of costly repairs, had been unreli-able throughout the fall and winter months. The mother planned to attenda meeting with her county caseworker. When her car unexpectedly failed, she was unable to make her appointment and needed to reschedule.

We are EXPANDING our volunteer driving team to meet the transportationneeds of our guests.

Van Drivers Needed! We are looking for additional volunteer van drivers who can be “on call”to transport our guests to appointments on Mondays through Thursdaysduring daytime hours. On-call drivers will be notified of transportationneeds the week in advance and may offer to cover a shift if their sched-ules allow. Drivers must be 25 years or older.

Other VolunteerNeedsHope for the Journey Home Shelter Overnight Volun-teers. The Hope for the Journey Home (HJH) shelteris in need of “on call” volunteers to staff theovernight shifts (8 p.m. – 9:15 a.m.) in futuremonths. HJH is the shelterwhere Community Re-source Center guests stay.Overnight volunteers visitwith shelter guests andassist with evening andmorning routines at theshelter. Two volunteers arescheduled for the overnight shift, so you are wel-come to sign up by yourself or volunteer with afriend or spouse. An HJH staff member gives ahelpful and complete orientation to each volunteerteam. Overnight volunteers sleep in the shelter'sdesignated volunteer area.

YESTERDAYYou spoke. We listened. In 2008, we had a mission and vision-ing process, Discovering God’s Dream, where we heard loudand clear that even though we were already involved in manylocal mission projects, we wanted to do more locally for ourown community. It was also in 2008 that the recession hit andwe had more and more inquiries for help. Could we help a fam-ily from one of our schools who the school social worker knewwas living in their car? We had calls from members who hadan unexpected job loss and were not sure how to make endsmeet. Families hit with divorce, loss of income, loss of networth and not sure how tomake mortgage payments, foreclosures galore, and wewanted to do something. Wewere called to do something.Again we put on our listening ears to hear what the needs in thecommunity were.

You spoke. We listened. In 2010, the Church Council madeopening a Community Resource Center one of the 3 year goalsin their Strategic Plan. However, God had better plans. Thesails of St. Andrew’s caught the wind of the Holy Spirit and“whoosh,” only one year later in March of 2011, we had offi-cially opened the Community Resource Center of St. Andrew’s,thanks to the generosity and support of our members.

TODAYIn just three years the Community Resource Center has been avaluable resource in providing real help, hope and healing to ourneighbors in need. We, through community partnerships, havehelped hundreds of families with food, shelter, and compassion-ate case management. Last year alone, over 7,000 free Thurs-day night meals were provided, 23,000 pounds of free foodwere distributed, 131 homeless families were given emergencyshelter and food, and 74 families were saved from becominghomeless. We have much to celebrate! The Community Re-source Center is a whirl of activity and knows how to embracechange and expect the unexpected. One of the unexpected dis-coveries is how many families we are still unable to provide

housing assistance for. We’ve begun the process of wonderinghow we can make an even greater difference in our community, sharing our resources so we can love our neighbors as Christdesires. We’ve seen God’s fingerprints all over the ministry ofthe Community Resource Center, making a difference in thelives of too many to count. We also know that God worksthrough you! So as in the past… you spoke, we listened. Wewant to listen again!

WHAT’S NEXT? Come vision with us and be a part of shaping the exciting future

of the Community Resource Centerof St. Andrew’s. Attend one of thehour long sessions listed below.Isn’t it exciting to be a part of aplace that is making a difference?

…Making the world more like Christ envisioned. Come “Makea Difference” with us…for Christ’s sake!

by Rev. Michael D. Carlson

I remember working in the North Woods at acamp for one summer. There was only onephone and many bells hanging on trees allthroughout the property. When the phone rangyou could hear it for miles. It was an event.Today many of us have cell phones, and if we putthem on silent, we can miss important calls. Wekeep doing our work or play and someone keepstrying to get our attention and we may neverknow it.

Over the last few weeks I have been thinking quite a bit aboutcalls. How they can change our lives. My call to St. Andrew’smore than five years ago came out of the blue. It was some-thing I never saw coming. As I remained faithful to that call Ihave been blessed beyond measure.

Coming to this magnificent church has made me a better pas-tor. Serving with the pastoral team has enriched me beyondwords. Serving with this staff has been a powerful gift. But itis the people of the congregation that have given me more thanwords can say.

You, the people of the parish, have taught me what a true com-munity of faith can do when they center themselves on theGospel of Jesus Christ. We have fed the hungry of body and ofspirit. We have renewed faith by deep and profound worship,we have indeed Proclaimed Jesus Christ, lived in Christ andserved together, and it has worked. We have seen the kingdomof God at work in ways so profound that I am forever changed. It has been life shaping and a gift. Never did I believe what thiscall could bring to me and my family. It would be easy, veryeasy, to stay. However, the bells on the old trees up north are a ringing again, and I have received a call to be the lead pastor of Shepherd ofthe Lake in Prior Lake, Minnesota. I resisted the call at first be-cause I love it here. But the call was clear. I have learned tofollow. No matter how painful or frightening it may feel at first,

I have learned something. God is faithful. I am ex-cited for my new adventure, because I know thepower of Jesus will lead me. My tears of sadnessare truly tears of thankfulness. My last day at St.Andrew’s was Feb. 16, 2014.

Thank you, St. Andrew’s, for loving, teaching andguiding me. Thank you staff for walking with me.Thank you pastors for ministering to and with me.

I am convinced that the best years for St. Andrew’sare yet to come. I will be watching and praying for you as theKingdom of God grows in your keeping. All these things by thepower of the Holy Spirit. AMEN!

NNEWSEWS ANDAND NNOTESOTES A Critical NeedIn 2012, youth across the ELCA, including several from St.Andrew’s, set out to raise $250,000 to support the waterprojects of ELCA World Hunger where needed most. Theydid it and then some, raising more than $500,000! That wasenough to dig 200 wells.

Each of the wells dug serves a village somewhere. Theyouth campaign right now is saving thousands of people(mostly women) who previously were walking several hoursa day to obtain enough water meet the needs of their fami-lies. Not only is this exhausting labor, but the need to obtainwater in this time-consuming way also limits their eco-nomic and social potential. The ELCA youth campaign alsohelped reduce the water-related illnesses that cause chil-dren in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia to miss school, estimated by the UN to be 443 million days a year.

Lack of water and poor sanitation resulting in disease anddeath very often go hand in hand, too. That’s another plusfor the work our young people accomplished and anothercause for celebrating their achievement.

With nearly abillion people inthe world lack-ing access tosafe drinkingwater, we hereat St. Andrew’s,who are com-mitted to serve, can’t turn ablind eye to thecritical need fora lot more. Consider this another opportunity to become apart of the effort yourself. Your check to St. Andrew’s LutherChurch with “ELCA World Hunger” on the memo line willhelp.

It's been half a year since over 150 members of St. Andrew'sand other friends put their faith into action by helping to build afive-bedroom house at 522 Thomas Ave in St. Paul. The NasraNur and Aydarus Mahamud family has moved into their newhome and look forward to finally having a stable place to live.

With last summer's successful Habitat for Humanity project be-hind us, we look ahead to this summer. We have received excit-ing news! We will build a new house in White Bear Lake! Weestimate that St. Andrew's will begin June 2, and build for thenext four weeks. We will partner with several other areachurches for the remainder of the build.

Habitat weekend will be April 26/27 Registration for volunteersbegins, the Cemstone Run For Others takes place on Saturday,April 26, and the Habitat special offering will take place. Go tosaintandrews.org and click on the Habitat link to sign up as aconstruction volunteer. Go to the registration table before andafter services the weekends of April 26/27, May 3/4, May 10/11to sign up to be a site host or serve lunch. It would be wonder-ful if we could reach 200 volunteers this year!

2014 will be the 23rd year St. Andrew's has helped a needyfamily achieve home ownership. You may know that Habitat forHumanity is not a charity program. Homeowners make theirdown payment with 300-500 hours of “sweat equity,” and thenpay a zero interest mortgage for the actual cost of the house.Homeowners are carefully selected from needy applicants: onlyone in ten qualified applicants is offered one of the 60 homesbuilt each year by volunteers and Habitat families here in theTwin Cities.

Join your St. Andrew's friends and volunteer with Habitat nextsummer!• Be a construction volunteer (must be 16 years old)• Be a site host• Be the neighborhood family partner for the new Habitat family

• Bring lunch or provide snacks, • Run in the Cemstone Run For Others on April 26 • Donate to the Habitat building fund• Put this mission on your prayer list

Each year St. Andrew's members raise at least $24,000 to payfor the materials used during the four weeks we build. Thespecial Habitat offering is April 26/27 this year, or you can des-ignate a gift to the Habitat for Humanity fund any time. If youdonate directly to Twin Cities Habitat, please ask them to applyyour gift to St. Andrew's.

Here is an idea of what your gift to Habitat will buy:$10 = Box of Nails $50 = Low Flow Toilet $75 = Window $100 = Kitchen Sink $150 = Front Door $1000 = Wallboard $2000 = Flooring

Volunteer registration will begin April 26. Check out the Habitatfor Humanity page on the saintandrews.org website for currentinformation and a link to register.

Would you like to join our Tuesday Crew? A group of dedicatedretirees volunteer each Tuesday year-around. Contact DaveEngh 651-482-8642 for information.

Prayer Shawl MinistryA tangible evidence of prayer. We have a Prayer Shawl Ministry that of-fers tangible evidence of prayer; prayersthat are knit into the shawls and that therecipient is wrapped in with each shawl.

One member of the prayer shawl grouptold us that she had taken a shawl to asick friend with the prayers and a cardand was very surprised and moved byhow much the shawl meant to her friend. She told her daughter of this experienceand was surprised when her daughtertearfully asked her to make a shawl forher. The woman asked her daughter whyshe wanted a prayer shawl and thedaughter told her she wanted the shawlso she could wrap herself in God’s loveand prayers for the rest of her life.

Our prayer shawl group meets the SEC-OND Saturday of every month in the Gar-den Room of St. Andrew’s Village from9-11 a.m. Come and pray and knit withus if you can, or pray and knit at homeand bring us your shawl for gifting.

Giving Ourselves Away in LoveThe Benevolence Committee met in January to share St. Andrew’sblessings with compelling grant requests from local, national, and in-ternational missions. Every meeting we review and rank proposalsfrom committed missionaries seeking to change the world one projectat a time. We awarded grants to the following programs:

Local Missions:$5,000 to a Shobi’s Table and Mobile Action Ministries partnership topurchase food for an outreach program. Shobi’s Table is a new mis-sion start in the St. Paul Area Synod. The vision is to be a mobile con-gregation that will bring church to those in poverty who have limitedaccess to transportation. They will use food to gather people in bytaking lunches and worship opportunities to the bridges and locationswhere homeless people gather for shelter. Our grant will provide 50meals every week for use with their worship program to the marginal-ized homeless.

$5,000 to Union Gospel Mission to make badly needed repairs to bathroom facilities at the Bethel Hotel for homeless men. Ourgrant will be matched 2 for 1 to leverage work on the project to provide safe, short-term shelter to the homeless.

The committee granted $8,000 to four local food shelves in Stillwater, Woodbury, Mahtomedi, and White Bear Lake. Our grant willgo out in March to coincide with the matching challenge grant from Second Harvest to leverage the ability of the food shelves tobuy food in the critical spring and summer months.

National Mission:$5,000 to the MN Faith Chinese Lutheran Church, the only ELCA/Chinese congregation in Minnesota. They have an active and var-ied outreach program. The Committee prioritized lending support to their Women in Need ministry and Chinese Youth ministry atthe U of M. The effect of this grant could be enormous. The University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus has more Chinese stu-dents and scholars than any other college campus in the United States. MN Faith Chinese Lutheran Church feels this is their bestopportunity to spread the gospel.

International Mission:$10,000 to Brydges Centre, a home for 120 orphan and vulnerable children located in Kisaju, Kenya. Brydges has a wide variety ofprojects underway to help support, educate and feed these children. Our grant will help build a much needed kitchen in their train-ing facility. They do not have paid staff so donations go directly to support children services and structures related to programs forthe kids.

Do You Have a “Giving Cup”?Blessings come our way in many forms and atunpredictable times. How do you respond? Some may take them for granted. Some mayfeel profound gratitude. Our attitude affectswhether we squander those blessings orwhether we nurture and grow them. Such isthe discipline of stewardship.

The economy has started growing stronger, andwe have had the best stock market in manyyears. If you have that new job or a capital gain, how will youuse it? The Bible recommends that we tithe to the Lord.Sound stewardship suggests that we also set aside some ofour gains to let them grow and protect us in the future.

One Foundation donor couple invested a small windfall into aseparate account for future needs. Over the years, this bless-ing has grown and now provides a base for charitable giving. The couple views this account as their “Giving Cup.” Whenmarkets rise, this cup “over flows” and provides the capabilityto give more. A gift from this account helped start the MustardSeed Fund that will now provide Bibles to the children of St.Andrew’s for many years into the future.

You may have the blessing of more time through retirement, new talents through gained experience, or new monetary gainsthrough rising financial fortune. Consider setting a portion ofthese blessings aside to nurture and develop them for ourcommon purpose to give ourselves away in the service of theLord. Small seeds can gather and grow over time to inspiringand sustaining levels. Whatever your blessings may be theycan be made manifold in mission service. If you have an inter-est in setting up your own “Giving Cup,” contact Lori Goodroad(651-762-9103) or Roger Henry (651-222-4920) to have aFoundation representative talk with you.

We gratefully acknowledge thedonors who have helped providecoverage of St. Andrew’s Sundayservice broadcasts on KLBB.

MMISSIONISSION JJAMAICAAMAICA

What Makes a Great Mission Trip?by Jewelie Grape

What makes a great mission trip? The St.Andrew’s January 25 to February 2, 2014Mission Jamaica (MJ) trip to MontegoBay was a wonderful mixture of veteranand new missionaries from multiplechurches. Despite different backgrounds, the teams came together with a commonpurpose to serve the people of Jamaica. We were the hands of service while do-nations from St. Andrew’smembers/friends helped fund the sup-plies (THANK YOU!). The projects in-cluded childcare and buildingmaintenance at West Haven Children’sHome, mobile medical clinics in three dif-ferent communities, and J’Bode (buildinga 12-by-16-foot home).

You could measure success by the im-pact of the projects, but it seemed appro-priate to measure the human impact fromthe eyes of a first-time MJ missionary,Jewelie Grape, in her own words:

“I didn’t have the pleasure of seeing theWest Haven and J’Bode teams work theirmagic, but I certainly did see the medicalteam work theirs and below are my ob-servations!

“The setup: Four large plastic crates andvarious other bags and containers stuffedfull of medical supplies and medications.Add one doctor, five nurses and a hodge-podge of us who knew nothing about themedical field and you have the MissionJamaica mobile medical clinic.”

“The results: 297 patients seen at 4sites; 77 at St. John’s Methodist Churchon Monday, 96 in Copse on Tuesday, 83 inBurnt Savannah on Wednesday, and 41

hotel staff on Thursday morning. The old-est patient was 94, and the youngest wasunder a year old. Women, men, and chil-dren – some in desperate need of medi-cine, others in desperate need of a prayerand feeling loved.”

“What will I remember? • The goodnessof the people on the Mission Jamaicateam. • The stamina of one doctor (Dr.David Kroschel) seeing almost 100 pa-tients in one day – with a smile on hisface every time I saw him. • The pa-tience of the people waiting – standing orsitting on benches or chairs until it wastheir turn to see the doctor. No one com-plained about the time, the lines, or theheat. I will remember the caring mannerof the nurses as they did intake and iden-tified the needs of those waiting. Butmost of all, I will remember the looks ofgratitude on the faces of patients afterthey saw the doctor. One lady told me

that she immediately felt better just bytalking to the doctor. Others told us theyknew they should be taking medicationdaily, but couldn’t afford to – and ex-pressed heartfelt thanks for somethingthat I (at the beginning of the trip) consid-ered trivial - a month’s supply of bloodpressure medication or vitamins or evena toothbrush.”

“Thinking about my trip on the way home,I was struck by the fact that no matterhow much you think you give, you alwaysreceive so, so much more. During theweek, I was reminded time and timeagain of the preciousness of life, the im-portance of feeling cared for, and the in-terdependence of us all. It made me thinkof how few material things we need to betruly happy and the importance offriends, and family, and feeling loved. The week was a perfect example of God’sgrace and love for all his children.”
