Chon Buri, in short Mueang Chon, has been a popular
seaside town of the eastern coast for a long period of time. It
is also an agricultural site of economic plants such as sugar
cane, cassava and Para rubber trees, as well as, a location of
the Eastern Seaboard Development Project and significantindustrial factories.
From historical evidence, Mueang Chon Buri has been
settled since the Ayutthaya period. Originally, it comprised
of many small towns such as Mueang Bang Sai, Mueang
Bang Pla Soi, and Mueang Bang Phra. Later, King Rama V
combined these towns together into Chon Buri province.
Only 80 kilometres from Bangkok and covering an area of
4,363 square kilometers, the province is administratively
divided into Amphoe Mueang Chon Buri, Amphoe Nong
Yai, Amphoe Phanat Nikhom, Amphoe Ban Bueng, Amphoe
Phan Thong, Amphoe Bo Thong, Amphoe Si Racha, Amphoe
Bang Lamung (Pattaya), Amphoe Sattahip, Amphoe Ko
Sichang and King Amphoe Ko Chan. As for Pattaya, it is an
international tourist destination with a rapid growth.
Therefore, a special local administration as Mueang Pattaya
is necessary. It was separated from the Bang Lamung
Administration, Chon Buri.
