Golf hits hole in oneVolkswagen Golf

TSI Highline

It was with a great deal of anticipation that Sideline Sid looked forward to

his latest car review assignment, when he went to Farmer Autovillage to put a shiny, brand new Volkswagen Golf

TSI Highline through its paces. What he found was a genuine European

vehicle, manufactured with all of the passion and fervour of the German car-maker.

Volkswagen has a long history that started in 1931, with the VW Golf becoming Volkswa-gen’s most successful model, when it passed the iconic Beetle production numbers in 2002.

In 2013 the 30 millionth Golf, now in its seventh generation, rolled off the production line, making it the most successful European car – EVER.

The VW Golf TSI we took out for the morning was given its fi rst test while still at Farmer Autovillage. Given the keys with an “are you right to back the car out” turned out to be backing the VW Golf down the full frontage of the Famer Autovillage showrooms. Utilising the Rear Assist rear view camera, and electronic parking sensors, made the backing up of the VW Golf along the narrow passage-way a breeze.

The Valentine’s Day theme photo shoot at Ferguson Park, gave the VW Golf test pilot time to add to his fi rst impressions of the biggest-selling European car of all time.

Lifting the bonnet revealed a state-of-the-art engine, which thanks to the lightweight design and BlueMotion Technology makes

the VW Golf TSI up to 19 per cent more fuel effi cient. The engine produces more power and exceptionally low emission levels compared to previous models; and out on the open road we found a car with plenty of toe, for a vehicle that is just under 1.4 litres.

Viewing the exterior, revealed front fog lamps with static corner-ing lights and automatic driving light controls, along with separate daytime running lights. Opening the boot is a nifty exercise that utilises the VW badge to reveal plenty of space for luggage on long distance travel. However, it is the 17inch alloy wheels that set the VW Golf TSI off with a real touch of class.

Our second test, where the VW Golf passed with fl ying colours, was to navigate the speed humps that traverse the entrance to Ferguson Park. There was hardly any movement from the sport suspension as we drove over the multiple bumps.

Getting behind the wheel of the VW Golf TSI Highline reveals luxury and clever German technology. Vienna leather uphol-stery and heated fronts seats were just the start. For Sideline Sid, who has mobility issues, the real winner was the electrically adjustable driver’s seat. (The leather interior and electric seat are factory optional extras). Other standout features are the automatically dimming rear view mirror and the two-zone front seating air conditioning.

However, what made VW Golf TSI

stand out for the reviewer was the BlueMotion range of innova-tive energy-saving technologies. Labelled by Volkswagen as a Smart Car, they weren’t kidding with a myriad of new technology. The Start-Stop system switches

off the engine when stationary at traffi c lights, as a fuel-saving initiative. As soon as the lights fl ick to green, you put your foot on the accelerator and the engine quickly kicks into action again.

Brake regeneration is best described by a VW marketing phrase that says: “Use brake energy to travel further”, which sums up further green technologies from Volkswagen. As soon as you take your foot off the accelerator, or apply the brakes, the tension is raised on the generator and used to recharge the vehicle’s battery. This means the battery is well-charged, the load is taken off the engine and consumption drops. Other BlueMotion innovations include gear suggestion, aero-dynamic design and optimised rolling resistant tyres.

Uncompromising safety is a further standout on the VW Golf TSI, which has been given the maximum EuroNCAP fi ve star safety rating. Electronic Stability Control and Multicollision Brake, which automatically initiates braking if the vehicle is involved in a collision, are

just for starters. Multiple air bags, a tyre pres-sure warning light and safety-optimised front head restraints continue the safety features. At a small further cost, a pro-active passenger pro-tection system, which identifi es a dangerous situation and automatically closes the windows and tightens the seatbelts, can further enhance the VW Golf TSI safety features.

A ‘Drivers Car’ that combines all of the multimedia bells and whistles with the Blue-Motion technology and outstanding safety features sums up the Volkswagen Golf TSI Highline – it has more than a touch of luxury at a very affordable mid-car range price.

Tauranga plumber Steve Clarke’s love of motorcycles all started with pretty humble beginnings.

“It was just all about transport,” says Steve, about the ‘basic’ bike he fi rst got at 15.

On Sunday Steve will be heading to Paeroa to take part in the annual ‘Battle of the streets’ race, competing for the third time in the annual event – and the avowed Honda fan he will be aiming to build on last year’s success where he came third in the Pre ‘ 89 class on his 1989 Honda CBR600.

Asked what the appeal of the Honda badge is he simply says he has grown fond of them in the same way many driv-ers become Holden or Ford fans. “They’re very reliable and it’s what I’ve always stuck with.”

Steve, who also has a CBR 1100 Blackbird and a VTR Twin SP2 in his garage he uses for regular weekend road trips with his mates, took part in his fi rst street race three years.

“My brother Phil’s been trying to get me into racing for years and I did eventually try it and loved it,” says Phil who now races in both track and street race events in the pre-89 class.

“The thing I love about the pre-89s is it’s the classics and the budget needed to race is pretty affordable.”

Over summer he has competed in street races in Wanganui and Nelson, while at Labour Weekend his success at the Barry Sheene Oceania Challenge track event held at Hamp-ton Downs saw him invited to join a team competing in Sydney in March. While unable to compete in the trans-Tasman challenge, his immediate focus is on the Paeroa event on February 16 where he is aiming for a similar result to last year.

Steve, who describes it as a fun and exhilarating event, says he ultimately aims to race a higher powered bike and would love to compete in Australian events including the famed Phillip Island race. By Hamish Carter

Sunday, and would ultimately love to race in top international superbike

events. Photo by Bruce Barnard.

Tearing up Paeroa’s streetsKatikati road rider Rhys Holmes is determined to pull the throttle

out at Paeroa’s Battle of the Streets this weekend, after taking a tumble on the circuit last year.“I wasn’t going very fast – it would

have only been 60-80km/h going around an S-bend,” says Rhys, about the accident which saw him hospital-ised with a split spleen. “But it was pretty painful.”

The tumble came when he was lead-ing at the start of the Bears’ race, after fi nishing third earlier in the fi rst 600cc race.

This year he’s aiming to win the Bears’ race. But with fi ercer competi-tion in the F2 event he’ll be happy with a top fi ve fi nish at the street race he’s been dreaming of racing in since fi rst seeing it at age 13.

“It’s a pretty stiff fi eld and my bike is pretty standard – you’ve got a handful of big names like Hayden Fitzgerald and Ray Clee taking part. These are the top guys and anyone of them could win.”

But Rhys is far from giving up on his chances, saying the key is qualifying and starting well. “It all comes down to the day, but part of the challenge at Paeroa is you don’t have much time to

practise; you just have to go straight out fast.”

To prepare Rhys rode the Paeroa cir-cuit at the weekend, but with the area awash after Saturday’s downpour he could only roughly familiarise himself with the course – where he normally gets to speeds of 280 km/h on the straight.

After mixed results in the national superbike series rounds

in Christchurch and Timaru in January,

Rhys is in fi fth place in the series. But when the series continues in Taupo and Manfeild in March, he’s determined to make up lost ground and fi nish on the podium.

Motorcycle-mad Rhys combines his passion with work as a mechanic at Mount Motorcycles , which sup-ports him alongside major sponsor John Tuhoe Racing. Ultimately, Rhys wants to race in the top international circuits in the US or UK, with hopes of making the break in the next two years.

Designs and features have changed dramatically in the 42 years since

Brian Roderick joined the auto trade. He likes to think some things

have stayed the same.

Brian has always stood by what he sells, and tries to ensure the cars are as safe as possible.

“I have always tried to do what I can to make the cars as safe and in as good a condi-tion as possible,” says Brian, who clearly remembers the fi rst car he sold when he started off with Carter’s Motors Holden dealership.

“It was a red 1972 Holden Belmont with a price of $3422 – it was a full size Holden with six cylinders and there wasn’t a lot of ‘selling’ involved. If somebody wanted a car, they came and put their name down and just waited for their allocation.

“It was a different time,” laughs Brian, who has run his own car yard in Tauranga since 1978.

In keeping with his focus on safety and

looking after his customers, he’s giving everyone who buys a car this month a free fi rst aid kit.

“It’s just a thank you for all the support I’ve had from the public over the years,” says Brian.

Looking back he remembers the 1975 oil shock as prompting the fi rst in a series of changes that have transformed cars to what they are today.

“I remember Holden didn’t have any small engine cars, so that prompted a major scramble,” says Brian, about the oil shock’s impact.

“Today the cars are so good, you can drive them and drive them for years and years,” says Brian, who remembers how the used car market was transformed in the late 1980s, when he was one of the fi rst people involved in importing used Japanese cars.

“Suddenly you could get air conditioning standard, power steering standard – all the extras at a good price. It brought a whole new era in the standard of cars on our roads.” By Hamish Carter

Whether it’s the grunty reverberation of a powerful engine or the

streamlined styling of a 50s American classic that you love – there will be something for all motoring

enthusiasts at Show Off Your Wheels car show next Sunday.

The motoring show, which is being run for the fi rst time as a Mount Maunganui Rotary Club fundraiser, has attracted strong interest with more than 130 vehicles from individuals confi rmed for display with more coming in daily.

“We’re keeping entries open until just before the event to make it easy for anyone to get involved,” says organiser Les Cresswell. “A lot of people are holding off so they know what the weather’s going to be like.”

On top of displays ranging from a noisy over 100-year-old traction engine, impressive big rigs, cranes and a concrete mixer, the show will also offer a chance to get up close to some of the top vehicles in some of the regions assorted motoring clubs.

“We’ve got seven vehicles coming from the

military vehicle club – which will be very interesting – there’s quite a number coming from the Morris Minor club, along with a lot of impressive motorcycles coming from the Coastal Cruisers and Ulysses clubs .And that’s just the start.”

Visitors will also have a chance to kick the tyres on some of the latest cars offered by a handful of dealerships, but Les is particularly excited about having the Denny Hulme Supercar on show.

“We’ve just confi rmed it and are defi nitely expecting it to be one of the top drawcards. It’s such a fantastic car we think all petrol-heads will want to see it up close.”

The car, which was designed and made in New Zealand for Hulme Supercar Ltd and is featured in the Massey University TV, has been trying to attract investors to fund manu-facturing within the country.

Les was looking at ways to transport the car, which is packed in a crate on a trailer, from Auckland and wants to hear from anyone with a 4x4 who can help. The show runs at Mount Maunganui College on Sunday Febru-ary 23 from 10am-4.30pm. Details: www.showoffyourwheelsautoshow.com
