Okay, Peugeot, you’ve set my expectations very high. European

Car of the Year? We’ll soon fi nd out. Tauranga Peugeot recently handed

over the keys to their new 308 Active – and I took it for a spin.

I’ve had somewhat of a history with Peugeot, starting with work experience as a Peugeot mechanic in high school, through to owning several – and driving many more. So I guess you could say I have an idea of what to expect from the French quarter. But, wow, this isn’t what I was expecting at all!

I’m always concerned when manufactur-ers put tiny engines in reasonably-sized cars. The 308, although classed as a small car, really isn’t all that small. Yet, Peugeot decided to throw in a 1.2 litre engine and send it out in to the wild.

I know, I can hear the screams of ‘under-powered’ from you all, but no. Just no. This car is not underpowered, it’s not even right-sized – it’s an animal!

The 1.2, three-cylinder petrol engine has

been coupled with a high pressure turbo – the result is a torqued-up powerhouse that truly astounds.

Hey good lookingIt’s pretty too, damn pretty. The new 308

is quite subtly styled, but in exactly the right way. There’s just something about it that says quality, coupled with executive refi nement; and, dare I say, grace.

When you step inside, this is a trend that continues. The simplistic dashboard, with barely a button to be seen, removes function and simply becomes form.

Everything has been integrated into the 9.7” in-dash touchscreen where even there, simplicity rules. All the functions are easy to access, and the screen controls are so straight-forward they could have been user-tested by a papillon with success.

Even the smaller steering wheel adds to the feel and handling of the car – it feels sporty, yet with its nappa leather wrapping, luxuri-ous too.

The 308 also features the start-stop func-tionality that’s appearing in so many modern

cars; the engine stops at lights and restarts when you move away.

I appreciate manufacturers are almost forced to have this function with Euro emission standards and

economy at the forefront, but personally I fi nd this feature irritating in all cars – yet, once again, Peugeot has won me over with the button to disable it right there on the dash. No hunting through menus on smart-screens to turn it off!

Faultless on the roadOut on the road the 308 is near impossible

to fault. It’s comfortable, quiet and power-ful. The 96kW (130bhp) from the fusion reactor under the hood makes acceleration effortless, the six-speed automatic makes it smooth, and the handling is superb.

The torque is also really surprising – it gives you that V8 feel of grunt low-down, and just fl ies when the turbo kicks in.

For an extra bit of excitement, the six-speed effi cient, automatic transmission also features a tiptronic mode, turning an already sporty-feeling car into an actual sports car.

If you want even more of a thrill, the 1.6 turbo model will be coming in January – although I think you’ll need to demolish the garage and replace it with a cage, as that cat will be wild.

There’s also a 2.0L diesel option, with Peugeots renowned HDi engine.

That produces the same amount of horses as the 1.6 coming in January, at around 150bhp, but with huge torque gains as

you’d expect from a diesel.If you’re needing a more roomy option,

the 308 also comes in wagon form. Again, something Peugeot has historically done well, it looks like it was always meant to be a wagon, as opposed to a sedan that’s been mangled with a boxed off tail. According to the brochure though, it seems like the wagon is missing the diesel option, and will just be available in 1.2L and 1.6L petrol forms.

So why has this little Pug been awarded European Car of the Year? That’s an easy one to answer – because it’s outstanding, that’s why.

You simply will not appreciate how good this car is until you drive it for yourself. It also helps that it’s awarded a fi ve-star ANCAP safety rating, and the standard features are pretty much all you could need – all the usual culprits, such as cruise control etc, and safety features that would excite any acronym fanatic such as, ABD, EBFD, EBA and ESC for a start.

I’ll let you look those up, or have some fun guessing. Better still, go to Tauranga Peugeot, book your test drive and pick up the specs.
