This issue we strap on our toolbelts, put on our work boots and

hoist ourselves into the new Hyundai iLoad series 2.

The van is aimed fairly and squarely at the tradesmen and women – it’s a workhorse for sparkies, chippies and couriers countrywide.

As we took delivery of the new Hyundai iLoad Series 2 from Farmer Autovillage Hyundai, we were quickly given the overview of the improvement list but time was scarce as our driver for the day was Troy Marshall from Harley Marshall builders. Show me an idle builder in the Bay and I’ll show you airborne bacon.

“Hey that’s fl ash,” says Troy and within moments he’s pairing his phone with the new touchscreen control centre, one of the standard upgrades.

“Gotta have hands-free these days,” says Troy as we tear off to the photo shoot.

Troy was already well-versed in the capacity benefi ts of the iLoad – just more than 4.4 cubic metres – as he already runs one daily.

“You’ll get a full sheet of 1.2m x 2.4m in the back, plus tools – there’s just so much space, I know a heap of guys running these as work vehicles.”

Nip tuckHyundai has given the 2016 iLoad a new

face, new technology and increased safety.The safety comes in the form of two

additional side airbags to complement the existing two SRS airbags up front, and a reversing camera as standard on all lift back models.

The new face is provided with a redesign of the bumpers and a deeper colour-coded grille, and the new technology is delivered in the form of a seven-inch touchscreen info-tainment centre, which is loaded with Siri eyes free for IOS or Google Now for

Android devices. There’s voice activation to make phone calls, you can access directory information, play music from your collec-tion; script and send a text message, even set up reminders or calendar appointments. In a nutshell, yell orders at your Hyundai and it shall obey.

“It’s got a decent amount of power but good on diesel,” Troy adds.

A later check reveals manufacturers claims of 8.8 litres per 100km which should give you more than 800km per a 75 litre fi ll. That fi gure is bound to head south once you’re fully loaded and towing a trailer, tow hook is standard, but respectable nonetheless.

Buyer bewareAlso if you decide to give your left foot a

rest and go for an automatic transmission, cruise control comes as standard. It’s a feature that may have saved Troy on more than one occasion after he reveals: “I’ve had more speeding tickets in the 18 months of owning my iLoad than in the previous 10 years”.

Probably not the ringing endorsement Hyundai wants for their vans, but there you have it.

The iLoad 2.5 litre common rail turbo diesel power plants come in a couple of fl avours. The 2.5 litre CRDi with waste-gate turbocharger is mated to the six-speed manual transmission and produces 100kW at 3800rpm and 343Nm of torque acces-sible low down in the rev range, between 1500rpm and 2500rpm. The fi ve-speed automatic diesel employs Variable Geom-etry Turbocharging to produce 125kW at 3600rpm and an eye-watering 441Nm of torque at 2000rpm.

Now and thenSo how does it compare to the 2014

version? “The fi rst thing you notice is this new centre screen,” says Troy, as he fl icks through menus and gets acquainted with the

upgraded technology. “And this model feels a little…gruntier.”

Troy does own the manual and we’re testing the automatic, which has 25 per cent more power on paper. Also, this new model isn’t full of tools. “The reversing camera is a great feature; health and safety love this sort of thing.”

The important feature that hasn’t changed according to Troy is the vehicle just drives so well, because “so many vans drive like…vans”.

“But the iLoad, my one or this one, drives like a car. It’s great around town or on the open road; taking the boat to Coromandel.”

Accessorise correctly While the iLoad comes with many standard

features that some competitors would charge

for as upgrades, there is still a range of useful factory-fi tted accessories.

The extensive options list includes barn doors on the back if you’re going to be load-ing with a forklift, a safety steel bulkhead, cargo barrier, roof racks and several mag wheel options available.

The fi nal word “Look we got an iLoad for a number of

reasons. The space is massive, good on fuel, really comfortable to drive,” says Troy.

“In fact, the standard features on the iload are better than the additional features of the Hi Ace – but when you’re in business every-thing comes down to price.

“And Hyundai really came to the party and sharpened their pencils.” Matt Batchelor

Motorsport Bay of Plenty is looking for a sealed venue to

use for its Motorkhana/Autocross series this winter, with its clay-

based track at TECT All Terrain Park not appealing to drivers

wanting to keep their cars on the tarmac.

The club has had to cancel the Motorkhana/Autocross event set for this Sunday, May 22, after not being able to find a suitable venue to attract competitors who don’t want to race on gravel or dirt.

MBOP secretary Linda Loughlin says the club’s base at TECT All Ter-rain Park, with a clay-based surface, is suitable for spring through to autumn racing and is very popular, but during winter months weather hinders club members from using the track for the Motorkhana/Autocross series.

“So we are looking for some sealed venues we can use for both of our Motorkhana or Autocross events.”

The club’s next Motorkhana/Auto-cross series event is set for June 26 from 10am-4pm but a venue has not yet been found.

Linda says the sealed surface could be tarmac or concrete – as long as an off-dirt, off-gravel surface is on offer.

“We’d like to run a mixture of surfaces so people who do not want to run their cars on gravel have an opportunity to enter as well.”

Linda says the club is trying to give club members a choice of what they race on. “It’s a little series and if it

was always on a gravel surface on the Autocross track at TECT All Terrain Park then we wouldn’t be able to attract people who didn’t want to take their cars into loose surface.”

Linda says there is a demand for racing on a sealed rather than loose surface. “Especially for younger people who want to try it out.

“Because often they’re using their par-ents’ car and their parents don’t want to let the vehicle go onto a surface where it might get stone damage etc.”

In the past, MBOP has used the Baypark pit area “but that has become unacceptably expensive for us”.

Linda says a venue around the size of Baypark pit area – for example, a big carpark – which is not being used during Sundays would be ideal.

MBOP has a record member-ship of 247 – and the turnout for the Motorkhana/Autocross series is

“anything from 30 to 50 cars – and we usually average more if we have a sealed surface”.

The Motorkhana/Autocross series allows competitors to race any type of car.

“A car doesn’t need to have motor-sport modifications – you can bring along your road car and you can race it.”

The series runs throughout the year but how many events are scheduled is dependent on weather and venues being available.

Linda says the series’ aim is to encour-age younger people to get involved. “We want them to come out and have a go. It helps with their driving skills and that’s what we’re all about – upskilling drivers.”

MBOP looks for sealed surface

A sealed venue is needed for Motorsport Bay of Plenty’s Motorkhana/Autocross series during winter.

This week is Road Safety Week – and the Police is asking all motorists and

motorcycle riders to view it as an opportunity to assess their own driving ability and safety

risk level on the tarseal.“Road Safety Week is a great opportunity for all drivers

to reflect on their driving, and assess whether they are taking all the steps humanly possible to stay safe on our roads,” says national road policing operations manager Inspector Peter McKennie.

“What is incredibly sad and frustrating for Police is attending crashes where simple road safety rules have not been followed.”

Provisional data shows about 40 per cent of car occu-pants who have died on the roads this year were not wearing seat belts.

“Seat belts save lives, it’s a no-brainer,” says Peter.“It’s disappointing and frustrating that in 2016 we still

have people not taking the extra few seconds to protect themselves by doing something as simple as buckling up, especially when everyone knows it saves lives.

Another huge risk drivers are taking is travelling too fast for the conditions, says Peter.

“This still remains a contributing factor in around one-third of all fatal crashes.”

Last year 319 people were killed on NZ roads, with on average six families every week receiving the devastating news that a loved one had been killed in a crash.

“Drivers need to remember that every patch of road is someone’s community, and all drivers are part of that community even if they’re only passing through.”

The decision drivers make impact on all the people in that community,” says Peter.

“Police and our road safety partners work hard to reduce death and serious injuries on our roads, but we can’t do it alone.

“So please take a moment to reflect on your own driv-ing and ask yourself, are you doing everything in your power to reduce your road safety risk?”

This is the fifth Road Safety Week in New Zealand.
