While Sideline Sid has been on a myriad of journeys in his lifetime, on a beautiful Western Bay Friday

during autumn he went on a journey like no other.

The occasion was another Bay Driver review, where he stepped behind the wheel of a Dodge Journey SXT from Farmer Auto Village to test out the vehicle’s capabilities.

The USA-designed seven-seater brings to the market a number of very North Ameri-can innovations.

Starting with the signature Dodge crosshair grille, the vehicle stands out from the crowd with a sporty chiselled profi le and sculptured fender (bumper) fl ares.

Setting off the exterior are 17-inch alu-minium wheels, with the top of the range Journey R/T coming to the market with 19-inch machine cast aluminium wheels and bright door handles.

Both editions of the Dodge Journey come with a stylish roof rack as stock standard issue.

In order to do the Dodge Journey justice, we took the seven-seater around a circuit that provided open road motoring before seeing how the Dodge utility performed in Tau-ranga’s downtown traffi c.

After a quick carwash at Farmer Auto Village, to enhance the

photographic qualities of the black beauty we were driving, we headed for Maunganui Rd before branching off at ASB Baypark for the trip over the Maungatapu Bridge into Tau-ranga City.

The 3.6 litre Penstar V6 motor purred along delivering a near per-fect quiet ride on the open road.

Variable Valve Timing provides peak power, with acceleration to burn, we sailed past a couple of slow coaches on the main road.

Power for the Dodge Journey V6 engine is converted motion, courtesy of the automatic six-speed transmission.

American innovation gives car lovers the convenience of an automatic while providing manual gear changes through the Auto Stick manual shift mode.

Turning into Turret Rd laid down the chal-lenges of down town driving. The smooth idle and low speed operation made negotiat-ing the mid-morning heavy traffi c a breeze.

Backing up into a confi ned parking space was real easy using the rear camera and the big, big, big 8-inch touchscreen.

Stopping off at the halfway point on the trip, to refl ect on the vehicle, gave us an ideal opportunity to review the Dodge Journey

interior. While the Dodge Journey comes

with the expected multimedia func-tions, two innovations grabbed the eye of the intrepid Bay Driver reviewer.

With the seven seats provid-ing an ideal family vehicle, the addition of integrated child booster seats is a stroke of brilliance.

Built into the second row seat cushions, the booster seats can be raised and used when needed then slid back into the seat when not required,

In-vehicle storage has been taking to another level in the Dodge Journey. Coined ‘Flip n Stow’, the front passen-ger seat cushions fl ip up to provide innovative storage space.

Further storage is

provided in the second row of seats with two in-fl oor storage bins designed to keep up to 12 cans of soft drinks on ice. The bins also feature latching lids and remov-able, washable liners for extra convenience.Versatility is the name of the game

with the Dodge Journey here are vari-ous seating combinations possible, which allow second and third row seats to recline for comfort, or fold

fl at for added cargo space. Third row access is easy thanks to a one-

hand, one-motion operation of the second row Tilt N Slide seat.

With a full com-plement of seven passengers the rear cargo trunk offers hidden from view stor-age. Getting items in and out is easy with a rear liftgate that opens up out of the way.

In expected North American style there is a strong emphasis on safety. Electronic Stability Control, All Speed Traction Control, Four-Wheel

Anti-Lock Brake System and a full set of next generation air bags provide optimum safety.

However, the two Dodge Journey safety features that took the reviewer’s eye were the Active Head Restraints – a safety item that can help reduce the severity of neck injuries – and, the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

Saving the best to last, the Dodge Journey is outstanding value for money with the SXT currently on sale for a tad under $40,000. A completely unscientifi c consumer test of half a dozen people had an average price guess of $60,000.

The Dodge Journey’s classy style, coupled with the vehicles versatility and outstand-ing value for money, makes the USA designed vehicle a must see for all in the market for a seven-seater family wagon.
