BASKETBALL 1. THE AIM OF BASKETBALL Basketball is a team sport in which two teams of five players try to score points by introducing a ball through a 3 mts high hoop under organized rules. In fact, basketball is one of the most popular games in the world. The team that scores more points at the end of the match wins. The ball can be advanced on the court by bouncing it or passing it between teammates . Agressive physical contact is not permitted and there are restrictions on how the ball can be handled . The duration of a game can vary: USA 12 min x 4 periods (halves); Europe 10 min x 4 periods (halves). 2. BASKETBALL HISTORY In 1891, James Naismith, a physical education instructor at YMCA in Springfield, Massachussets,USA, invented a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied and fit during the long winters. He wrote the basic rules and the main idea was to introduce a ball (soccer ball) through a peach basket . In 1906 this system was changed by metal hoops with bakboards. Little by little basketball became a famous sport all over the world and in 1936 it was Olympic sport for the first time. In 1976 it was Olympic for female teams. The basketball rules had changed a lot to give this sport more spectacle , nowadays is one of the most viewed in the world. 3. 3. BASIC RULES Two teams of five players try to score more points during four periods.a. What players can do ......

- They can pass, bounce or shot the ball.- You as a player can move freely without the ball- You can defend but with no contact.- You can handle the ball for five seconds before you

move.- You can stay in the restricted area for only three seconds

if you are an attacker.- You can bounce the ball for as long as you want during

your posession.- Each team can make as many substitutions as they want.

b. What players can´t do ....- An attacking team have only 24 seconds to score the ball.- You as a player can´t bounce the ball, stop, and the start

to bounce again; as well you can´t bounce the ball using both hands at the same time (double foul).

- A player can´t do more than two steps with the ball in his/her hands (steps violation).

- If an attacker cross the centre line with the ball he can´t return to his side with the ball.

- An attacker has only 10 seconds to cross the centre line.

4. SCORE RULES There are three differents ways to score in basketball.1 point – From the free throw line (after a foul)2 points – from inside the semicircle3 points- From outside the three poins line
