+ Bro. William Surdyka, OFM Conv. - As was announced last week on Thursday, August 10, 2017 Bro. William Surdyka, OFM Conv., a native son of the parish, died at the age of 75, about a month in advance of his 76th birthday on September 15. He was assigned here to his home parish from 1994 - 2004. His major area of responsibility was in overseeing the physical plant of the parish and its finances. During those years he also looked after his three aunts as they advanced in years. He left Chicopee in 1955 to attend St. Francis High School in Athol Springs, NY outside of Buffalo.

Upon graduation from St. Francis in 1959 he joined the Friars and professed his Simple Vows on August 15, 1960 and his Solemn Vows on August 15, 1964. Most of his ministry was spent in secondary education at his alma mater, St. Francis HS, from 1970-1994 and 2004-2011 where he was a faculty member and then Department Chairperson of the Science Department teaching a wide range of courses, but with a concentration in Biology. During his time at St. Francis he also served as an Assistant Principal and oversaw the school’s extensive physical plant. Bro. Bill and I were together for about ten of those years. He was also assigned to Fr. Baker High School in Lackawanna, NY (1964-1965) and Archbishop Curley HS in Baltimore (1965-1970) before being assigned to St. Francis. Bro. Bill was an avid outdoors man and a hard core fan of the Buffalo Bills. He died at the Fr. Justin Senior Friars Residence in Athol Springs where he had lived since 2011. A funeral Mass was to be celebrated on August 17th at St. Francis Parish in Athol Springs and he was to be buried in the Friars’ Plot at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Cheektowaga, NY. We are grateful for the blessings that God shared with this parish during the ten years he was assigned here, but also for having called him forth from this parish as well. Memorial donations may be made in Bro. Bill’s memory to the Franciscan Education Fund, 12300 Folly Quarter Rd., Ellicott City, MD 21042 which helps support the education and formation costs of our young Friars. Please remember Bro. Bill in the charity of your prayers. Eternal rest, grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

Parish Family Mass and Picnic - Our Family Mass and Picnic will be held next Sunday, August 27th, beginning with Mass at 12:00 Noon at Szot Park. See page 9 for all you need to know about this FREE event to bring us together for prayer and time to enjoy each other's company. Please note that there will NOT be a Noon Mass in the Basilica itself on Sunday, August 27th. There will be NO COLLECTIONS during the Mass at Szot Park. So, if you go to Mass in the Park kindly drop your envelopes for August 27th in the collection basket the following weekend. Please, DO NOT bring en-

velopes to the park as we have nowhere to secure them at the park. If you did not yet respond you are still welcome to attend, but please give the office a call with how many will attend for our planning purposes. Please note that the food will be served until 3:00 p.m. Also, remember to bring a lawn chair. Whisper a little prayer for good weather, too!! Picnic Volunteers - Piotr and Ella Soja, chairs of this year's picnic, are having a brief meeting this Wednesday, August 23rd, at 7:00 p.m. in the school for all who can help for part of the day at the Picnic . Your attendance at the meeting will be a great help to them. Our Lady of Czestochowa Triduum - Our annual Triduum to Our Lady of Czestochowa will be held this week on Au-gust 24, 25, and 26. Our bi-lingual prayer service will begin at 7:00 p.m. each evening. On Saturday the prayer service will begin after the regularly scheduled Saturday evening 6:00 p.m. Mass and, weather permitting, will include our can-dlelight outdoor procession around Cyman Drive. I hope you will be able to join us. New School Year - While enrollment is looking solid for the coming school year there are still openings available. Contact the school if you are desirous of an outstanding Catholic education in the things of God and the things of this world. Classes begin on Monday, August 28th. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) - Much in the same way that schools and Religious Education programs will be getting underway again in a few weeks, so too does the program by which adults join the Catholic faith. This is a good time of year to specifically invite a family member or friend to complete their initiation into the Catholic faith or, if you know someone who is searching for God in their lives, to consider becoming Catholic. The Rite of Christian Initia-tion of Adults is a ministry to adults who are interested in learning more about the Catholic faith. Our parish RCIA pro-gram is for those: * Adults who have never been baptized * Adults who have been baptized in another Christian tradition and want to become Catholic

* Adults who were baptized Catholic, but have had no instruction in the faith or have not received the Sacra-ments of First Eucharist and/or Confirmation.

The RCIA is a wonderful opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about the Catholic faith. The RCIA sessions focus on the teachings and expe-rience of the Church and prepares individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Bap-tism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, that they have not yet received, at the Easter Vig-il on April 1, 2018 so as to grow in their faith and become closer to God. Maybe you were baptized and received your 1st Holy Communion, but were never confirmed. Maybe you know some-one who was baptized in another faith tradition, but has expressed interest in becoming Catholic. Maybe it is someone who has only just begun to think about a life of faith. I encourage all parishioners to think about and pray about some-one who you think might be interested in the RCIA program. If you are not sure how to approach the person feel free to speak to one of the Friars. This year’s RCIA group is in the process of being formed. Adults from all faith traditions or no religious background at all are welcome to participate in the RCIA beginning this Fall. Once we have a better idea of who the participants are, we will be able to put together an actual schedule that meets the needs of the group. For information about the details of the RCIA program please contact Fr. Michael at 594-6669, ext. 129.

Pierogi Production - Thanks to the leadership of Helen Banas and the many veteran vol-unteers and those who joined this seasoned group during the first two weeks of produc-tion, the Pierogi Pinchers pinched a little over 14,000 pierogis! They will be pinching again on Saturday, September 9th, beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the school cafeteria. There are plenty of jobs for pinchers and non-pinchers. The group also needs some men who can help with some of the heavier tasks that need to be done.

Final Thoughts - Enjoy the partial solar eclipse on Monday, weather permitting. It begins here at 1:25 p.m., reaches its maximum (72%) at 2:44 p.m. and ends at 3:58 p.m. Red Sox continue to lead the AL East and, if not for a one inning lapse, could have had a stronger hold on that lead. The Orioles continue to sniff around for a Wild Card spot, but cannot play well enough consistently to make any serious run. Don’t forget a little prayer for good weather for our Mass and Picnic next Sunday! I hope you will be able to join us! Have a blessed week! - Fr. Joe

St Stan’s Parish Council wants YOU!

As the summer comes to a close, the Parish Council is in the process of looking for new members. Do you have time and talents you could share with your Parish family? This important ministry could use your help. Who can be on the Parish Council? The Parish Council is open to all reg-istered and practicing members of the Parish, age sixteen or older. You must have a desire to serve the Parish Family, a willingness to work with the Pastor, and the ability to work in a group process through prayer, planning, and consensus. You must also desire to foster the teachings of the Church and have a commitment to attend meetings. What does the Parish Council do? The Parish Council assesses the needs of the Parish and its members and unifies the faith community, drawing forth the gifts and talents of the parishioners. The Parish Council discerns changes and focuses efforts needed to make the Parish more faithful to the call of God. The Parish Council also establishes goals and priorities to promote the common good of the Parish and makes recommendations to the Pastor on major matters con-cerning the Parish. If this sounds like you and you are up to the challenge, nomination forms will be available in the bulletin and at the Church entrances in the coming weeks. Do you know someone who might be a good candidate? Is that someone you? Please submit their name or your name and the Nominating Committee will contact them beginning in September. Please prayerfully consider participating in this crucial ministry. If you have questions feel free to contact Michael Pray, Chairperson of the Nominating Committee at (413) 285-4818 or [email protected].

B I U L E T Y N Parafialny - 20 sierpień 2017

20 Niedziela zwykła - rok A

W okolicach Tyru i Sydonu, miast pogańskich będących synonimem grzechu i zła, kobieta kananejska błaga Jezusa o uzdrowienie córki. On najpierw ignoruje jej prośbę, potem odmawia, aż wreszcie porównuje ją do psa. Jednak skutek tego bulwersującego zachowania Jezusa jest pozytywny. Budzi w kobiecie wiarę i uzdrawia jej córkę.

THAT MAN IS YOU! - RETURNS SEPTEMBER 9!

"For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them." (Mt 18:20)

We hope you have had a blessed and peace filled summer. The men of That Man is You! are excited to continue our journey to grow closer to the Lord. As we learned last year, "God is found in communion". This gathering of men learned of the many pitfalls arrayed before us and were given practical, Christ-centered tools to point us to the nar-

row path. This year looks to be even more enriching: "The fall semester will tackle head-on the issue that most separates the Church from modern society - the issue of love. Did you realize that only 17% of millennials list “getting married” as one of their top three goals in life? Nonetheless, the Catholic Church was founded by the God who is love and has been contemplating the mystery for over 2,000 years. Only the Church has a vision so vast that it embraces the latest neurological findings while soaring to the Marriage Feast of the Lamb. It is time for us to tell our story! We will look at seven critical moments from the Nuptial Mass to answer the questions regarding love. We will see that love is: desire, a gift, communion, expansive, unconditional, sacrifi-cial, and eternal. And yes, love is possible! There is great hope!" "We will find love made incarnate in the person of Jesus Christ and in a unique way expressed in the life of the Holy Family at Nazareth. The two greatest saints in all the Church are a mom and a dad!" That Man is You! is open to all men. Meetings are held on Saturday's beginning at 6:30 AM starting September 9, 2017. Please join us! If you have any questions, please contact Mike Pray at (413) 534-1251 or [email protected].
