From the desk of Friar Joe

Monday, February 17, is the Presidents’ Day Holiday. The Parish Office and our School are closed. We have only a 9:00 A.M. Mass in the Upper Basilica; there are no other Services that day! Pray for our Nation, for it’s leaders, for more true public service, and for a deep re-spect for all precious Human Life.

WINTER WEATHER CLOSINGS: Just to clarify again, if the Chico-pee Schools are closed or on a 2 hour delay, there will be no 6:30 A.M. Mass in Church. The Mass Intention will be celebrated in the Friary Chapel. This was strongly approved by our Parish Council. Also, if School is closed or 2 hours late, the Parish Office will open at 11:00 A.M. This practice is first for safety for all, then al-so to allow our crews to clear the parking lot, walks, stairs, etc.

I need to share with you an update on the major projects and repairs in our School. The new roof is complete. The new boilers are installed. The total cost for these two pro-jects is $808,071.96. The next step in the School is the replacement of HVAC me-chanicals. At over 45 years old, these old pneumatic items are shot and must be replaced with new digital items. The projected total for this replacement is $537,298.94. We, the Basilica Parish, are responsible for all Capital Improve-ments on our buildings. Needless to say, these projects have dug deep into our savings. Bids for the replacement of the old/outdated AC in the Upper Basilica were due February 11. The estimate for this replacement if $139,719.46. I am sure you now realize why I continue to beg in true Franciscan style that the week-end collection be increased by those who are able. We are moving forward slowly with the plans for our Lower Basilica: an elevator, a smaller more intimate daily and Adoration Chapel, gathering space, and HVAC. Our Parish Council and Finance Committee are reviewing all these items and we will keep you posted. Please practice stewardship and put a bit more in your envelope. “God loves the cheerful giver.” Peace and all good things!

CHOCOLATE FOR LENT - Fr. Paul will be offering a Lenten Series for adults. The series, using a delightful film, Chocolat, as a stepping stone for discussion. It is in English, and stars Johnny Depp, Juliette Binoche, and Judi Dench. The series exam-ines various attitudes: traditional Lenten penance, prejudice, hospitality, change, fami-ly relationships / disfunctions, Christian joy, Easter, the power of the Spirit. The pro-gram is interactive: viewing parts of the film, discussion, Scripture, and some prayer. Participants are asked to be faithful to attending most of the sessions. It will take place in the St. Stanislaus School Library on most Thursday evenings of Lent, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., beginning Thursday, February 27th. There will be no meeting on March 12th. Bringing chocolate is welcome!

BAPTISM - Through the Sacrament of Baptism we welcome James Joel Torcato and Vivian Grace Trysta Stark into the life of God and our Parish Family and extend our congratulations to their parents and godparents. We pray that they continue, by words and example, to bring up their child to know, love, and serve God.

SEMINARIAN VOCATION FUND - This weekend, we are taking up a special collection for the Seminarian-Vocation Fund. This collection will be for the education and care to our five current seminarians and for our future seminarians. Your prayers and financial support help to make possible the education and training these seminarians need to be men of deep prayer, dedicated shepherds of parishes, tireless ministers of the sacraments, and strong teachers of our Catholic faith. Contributions towards our Seminarian-Vocation Fund will make a significant impact on each seminarian. Funds collected through this special collection help to defray the cost of expenses for formation and seminary education such as tuition and fees, room and board, and health insurance for each seminarian. Bishop Rozanski humbly asks you to consid-er making a donation - an investment to the future of our diocese. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

THE DEEPER THE LOVE, THE DEEPER THE LOSS. . . WE GIVE THANKS AND WE REMEMBER. . .

When we experience the death of a loved one, our lives are immediately changed. Memories, questions, and various emotions surface as we grieve the loss of an individual’s physical presence. While our Faith assures us of eternal life, our human nature faces the natural and sometimes devastating feelings that over-power us. The season of winter with its short days and long evenings often deepen the grieving process. While each

loss has its own personal response, there are common threads – love, hope, anger, deep sadness, difficult adjustment to daily life, etc. Acknowledging those common threads, we invite you (or anyone you know who has lost a loved one) to join us on SATUR-DAY AFTERNOON, FEBRUARY 22, 2020 AT 2:00 PM IN ST. HYACINTH FRIARY FOR A BEREAVEMENT SES-SION. IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND, PLEASE CALL THE PARISH OFFICE 594-6669 and ask to speak with Sister Andrea Ciszewski, FSSJ. We look forward to your presence.

THE CATHOLIC LIFE CONFERENCE IS COMING TO SPRINGFIELD - Come invigorate your love for being Catholic. Come find encouragement for your discouragement! Amazing speakers, fellow Catholics from all the parish-es in the diocese, a full convention center of all things Catholic with Catholic ministries and materials, Eucharistic Ado-ration and Mass with Bishop Rozanski. The Catholic Life Conference will take place on March 21 at the MassMutual Center. Register online at catholiclifeconference.org or call (413) 768-0698.

LENTEN REGULATIONS Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence from meat as well as days of fast, when

only one full meal is allowed. On days of fast two other meatless meals may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal.

The other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. The obligation to abstain from meat begins at fourteen (14) years of age. The obligation to fast begins at eighteen (18) years of age and ends at fifty-nine (59) years of age. Although the faithful may excuse themselves for a just cause from these laws of fast and abstinence, there is an obli-

gation to substitute another penance and no Catholic should lightly excuse himself/herself from this obligation in the Lenten season.

During the FLU SEASON at Mass we will discontinue offering the Precious Blood at Communion, due to many hands touching the Cups. Also, NO HANDSHAKING for the Sign of Peace.

We have also emptied the Holy Water fonts for germ precaution.

SZOSTA NIEDZIELA ZWYKLA

I do każdego z nich stosuje tą samą konstrukcję: "w starym prawie powiedziano ..., a ja wam powiadam" i tutaj niejako "podnosi poprzeczkę". I człowiek takiego właśnie klarownego rozróżnienia potrzebuje.

"Jeżeli zechcesz, to zachowasz przykazania ... KAZIK

POSYNODALNA ADHORTACJA APOSTOLSKA CHRISTUS VIVIT

OJCA ŚWIĘTEGO FRANCISZKA DO MŁODYCH I CAŁEGO LUDU BOŻEGO

THE STORY OF THE CHAIR OF SAINT PETER This feast commemorates Christ’s choosing Peter to sit in his place as the servant-authority of the whole Church. After the “lost weekend” of

pain, doubt, and self-torment, Peter hears the Good News. Angels at the tomb say to Magdalene, “The Lord has risen! Go, tell his disciples and Peter.” John relates that when he and Peter ran to the tomb, the younger outraced the older, then waited for him. Peter entered, saw the wrappings on the ground, the head-piece rolled up in a place by itself. John saw and be-lieved. But he adds a reminder: “…[T]hey did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead” (John 20:9). They went home. There the slowly exploding, impossible idea became reality. Jesus ap-peared to them as they waited fearfully behind locked doors. “Peace be with you,” he said (John 20:21b), and they rejoiced. Second-century Christians built a small memorial over his burial spot. In the fourth cen-tury, the Emperor Constantine built a basilica, which was replaced in the 16th century. - franciscanmedia.org
